DESCRIPTION
This year-long professional development program helps educators build the knowledge and skills to incorporate the elements of opera (text analysis, libretto writing, music composition, theatrical staging) into ongoing instruction. Teachers learn to guide students in creating original music drama based on stories, poems, or historical events from classroom curriculum. In turn, students develop skills in the arts, while improving literacy, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration.TRANSCRIPT

This year-long professional development program helps educators build the knowledge and skills to incorporate the elements of opera (text analysis, libretto writing, music composition, theatrical staging) into ongoing instruction. Teachers learn to guide students in creating original music drama based on stories, poems, or historical events from classroom curriculum. In turn, students develop skills in the arts, while improving literacy, communication, problem-solving, and collaboration.
What’s Included: intensive professional development workshop, a five-day workshop where educators learn how to incorporate artistic processes into ongoing teaching
team planning sessions between Guild Artists and school teams to design year-long opera-based instruction, framed by a research inquiry
classroom support from Guild Artists who serve as classroom consultants and provide teachers with ongoing support in curriculum, instruction, and documentation
network meetings for teachers and administrators to meet with other school teams, share ideas, and continue professional development
final dress rehearsal tickets to the Metropolitan Opera (grades 3 and above)
Appropriate for: educators of students grade k to 12 Opera Learning Network requires a team from each school, comprised of 3 classroom teachers and an administrator (principal, literacy coach, or other instructional leader), to provide for a strong support system. Schools may also include their arts specialists.
