    A Litany of Assurance

Rejoice in so far as you share Christs sufferings, that you may be glad when Christs glory is revealed. To God be the dominion forever and ever.Humble yourselves under Gods mighty hand, that in due time God may exalt you.To God be the dominion forever and ever.Cast all your anxieties on God, for God cares about you.To God be the dominion forever and ever.Be sober, be watchful. Your enemy the devil prowls around seeking some one to devour. To God be the dominion forever and ever. Thanks be to God; in Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

They have been with us for a long time, but recentlythey have been experiencing problems with people coming into their space, using their equipment, andleaving food crumbs and juice marks on the tables. Since there are no doors to lock off their area fromthe rest of the church it is important that we not go into their area. If you see children or adults goingthrough the curtains that are hanging at the entrance to their space, please tell them that area is offlimits and we are not to use it. Thanks to everyone for their help.

About the Apostles CreedAlthough not written by apostles, the Apostles' Creed reflects the theological formulations of the firstcentury church. The creed's structure may be based on Jesus' command to make disciples of allnations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In a time when mostChristians were illiterate, oral repetition of the Apostles' Creed, along with the Lord's Prayer and theTen Commandments, helped preserve and transmit the faith of the western churches. The Apostles'Creed played no role in Eastern Orthodoxy. In the early church, Christians confessed that "Jesus is Lord" but did not always understand the biblical

context of lordship. The views of Marcion, a Christian living in Rome in the second century, furtherthreatened the church's understanding of Jesus as Lord. Marcion read the Old Testament as referringto a tyrannical God who had created a flawed world. Marcion believed that Jesus revealed, in contrast,a good God of love and mercy. For Marcion, then, Jesus was not the Messiah proclaimed by theprophets, and the Old Testament was not Scripture. Marcion proposed limiting Christian "Scripture" toLuke's gospel (less the birth narrative and other parts that he felt expressed Jewish thinking) and tothose letters of Paul that Marcion regarded as anti-Jewish. Marcion's views developed into a movementthat lasted several centuries.Around A.D.180, Roman Christians developed an early form of the Apostles' Creed to refute Marcion. They affirmed that the God of creation is the Father of Jesus Christ, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, was buried and raised from the dead, and ascended into heaven,

where he rules with the Father. They also affirmed belief in the Holy Spirit, the church, and theresurrection of the body.Candidates for membership in the church, having undergone a lengthy period of moral and doctrinalinstruction, were asked at baptism to state what they believed. They responded in the words of thiscreed. The Apostles' Creed underwent further development. In response to the question of readmitting thosewho had denied the faith during the persecutions of the second and third centuries, the church added,"I believe in the forgiveness of sins." In the fourth and fifth centuries, North African Christians debatedthe question of whether the church was an exclusive sect composed of the heroic few or an inclusivechurch of all who confessed Jesus Christ, leading to the addition of "holy" (belonging to God) and"catholic" (universal). In Gaul, in the fifth century, the phrase "he descended into hell" came into the

creed. By the eighth century, the creed had attained its present form.

From the Book ofOrderDirectory of Worship

One of the meanings of Communion

W-2.4006 Communion of the FaithfulAround the Table of the Lord, Gods people are in communion with Christ and with all who belong toChrist. Reconciliation with Christ compels reconciliation with one another. All the baptized faithful are tobe welcomed to the Table, and none shall be excluded because of race, sex, age, economic status, social class, handicapping condition, difference of culture or language, or any barrier created by human

injustice. Coming to the Lords Table the faithful are actively to seek reconciliation in every instance ofconflict or division between them and their neighbors. Each time they gather at the Table the believingcommunitya. are united with the Church in every place, and the whole Church is present;b. join with all the faithful in heaven and on earth in offering thanksgiving to the triune God;c. renew the vows taken at Baptism;and they commit themselves afresh to love and serve God, one another, and their neighbors in theworld.
