Call to Confession

The proof of God’s amazing love is this: While we were sinners Christ died for us. Because we have

faith in him, we dare to approach God with confidence. In faith and penitence, let us confess our sinbefore God and one another.

A Litany of Confession For once you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord.May Christ give us the light, that we may awaken to his truth.Walk as children of light as you pursue what is good, right, and true.May Christ give us the light, that we may awaken to his truth.Take no part in works of darkness but try to learn what is pleasing to God.May Christ give us the light, that we may awaken to his truth.

~ Silent prayers ~

The Gift of Forgiveness

Jesus has said, “As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world…I came into this world for judgment so that those who do not see may see, and those who do see may become blind. As weconfess our sins to God in Christ’s name, Christ intercedes on our behalf as we are awakened fromdeath to the hope of new life.

Thanks be to God! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!

Let us confess the faith of our baptism, as we say:

I believe in God, the Father almighty. Creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, bornof the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; hedescended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seatedat the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believein the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

APOSTLES' CREED

Although not written by apostles, the Apostles' Creed reflects the theological formulations of the firstcentury church. The creed's structure may be based on Jesus' command to make disciples of allnations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. In a time when mostChristians were illiterate, oral repetition of the Apostles' Creed, along with the Lord's Prayer and theTen Commandments, helped preserve and transmit the faith of the western churches. The Apostles'Creed played no role in Eastern Orthodoxy.

In the early church, Christians confessed that "Jesus is Lord" but did not always understand the biblicalcontext of lordship. The views of Marcion, a Christian living in Rome in the second century, further threatened the church's understanding of Jesus as Lord. Marcion read the Old Testament as referring

to a tyrannical God who had created a flawed world. Marcion believed that Jesus revealed, in contrast,a good God of love and mercy. For Marcion, then, Jesus was not the Messiah proclaimed by theprophets, and the Old Testament was not Scripture. Marcion proposed limiting Christian "Scripture" toLuke's gospel (less the birth narrative and other parts that he felt expressed Jewish thinking) and tothose letters of Paul that Marcion regarded as anti-Jewish. Marcion's views developed into a movementthat lasted several centuries.

Around A.D.180, Roman Christians developed an early form of the Apostles' Creed to refute Marcion. They affirmed that the God of creation is the Father of Jesus Christ, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified under Pontius Pilate, was buried and raised from the dead, and ascended into heaven, where he rules with the Father. They also affirmed belief in the Holy Spirit, the church, and the

resurrection of the body.

Candidates for membership in the church, having undergone a lengthy period of moral and doctrinalinstruction, were asked at baptism to state what they believed. They responded in the words of thiscreed.

The Apostles' Creed underwent further development. In response to the question of readmitting thosewho had denied the faith during the persecutions of the second and third centuries, the church added,"I believe in the forgiveness of sins." In the fourth and fifth centuries, North African Christians debatedthe question of whether the church was an exclusive sect composed of the heroic few or an inclusivechurch of all who confessed Jesus Christ, leadin to the addition of "hol " belon in to God and

"catholic" (universal). In Gaul, in the fifth century, the phrase "he descended into hell" came into thecreed. By the eighth century, the creed had attained its present form.

From The Book of Order

W-2.4000  4. The Lord’s Supper W-2.4001 Jesus and the Supper

a. The Lord’s Supper is the sign and seal of eating and drinking in communion with the crucified

and risen Lord. During his earthly ministry Jesus shared meals with his followers as a sign of community and acceptance and as an occasion for his own ministry. He celebrated Israel’s feasts of covenant commemoration.

Last Supper b. In his last meal before his death, Jesus took and shared with his disciples the bread and wine,

speaking of them as his body and blood, signs of the new covenant. He commended breaking breadand sharing a cup to remember and proclaim his death.

Resurrectionc. On the day of his resurrection, the risen Jesus made himself known to his followers in the

breaking of bread. He continued to show himself to believers, by blessing and breaking bread, bypreparing, serving, and sharing common meals. (W-1.3033)
