We are one month into thenew Elk year and I am sure youhave all noticed a few changesaround our Lodge. First of all I

would like you to join me in welcoming our newbartender Diane. Happy to have you with usDiane.

As some of you know, the “RE-CREATIONS”are a song and dance group of young peoplewho tour the entire United States VA hospitalsand put on shows for our veterans. Our turn tohost them was April 5, 2010. I want to thank allof you who attended, there was a great showingfrom our lodge. For those of you who could notmake it, you did miss a great show, but they willbe back next year.

I would like to remind all of you about our GolfTournament. It will be held on May 29, 2010.Golf will be at the Prescott Valley Country Club, the awards luncheon will be followingimmediately at our lodge. All proceeds are to goto our scholarship fund. Anyone who is interestedin participating or helping out please contact RonMartinson at 717- 9451. It is going to be a funday, so come on out and support your lodge.

I would like to wish all our mothers a veryHappy and Safe Mother’s Day, I sure hope you allplan to spend part of your day with us at ourannual Mother’s Day Service and Brunch.

In closing I want you all to be on the look outnext month for my report on the State Convention. It will be held in Tempe this year on May 19 —22.I will be bringing all the “latest and greatest”information back for you.

Fraternally, John BrunettExalted Ruler

Welcome to the Chair ofCharity. Last month I talkedabout giving to the Elk’s

National Foundation. I have been puttingpurple pigs in the bar and dining room foryou to deposit your spare change. I amalso passing around a piggy bank onmeeting nights. In the past 2 weeks I havecollected $40.00. Thank you for yoursupport. However, this will be an ongoingproject for the year. Please continue todrop those quarters, dimes and nickelsin the pigs. In addition to the ENF, I would like tomake a donation to the Arizona Elks MajorProjects. AEMP helps fund the SteeleChildren’s Neonatal Unit at the Universityof Arizona Hospital. They also help fund achildren’s summer camp north of Globe. Both of these are very worthwhile causesfor our state. AEMP and ENF need ourcontinuing help. When we speak of charity, remembercharity begins at home. Our Lodge needsyour financial support, so please come tothe bar and dining room. We have bingo3 nights a week and we need players andVOLUNTEERS. There will be specialfunctions through the year and we needyou to attend. As we glance at the May calendar, wesee that we celebrate one of America’smore patriotic holidays — Memorial Day. Itis a United States federal holiday observedon the last Monday of May. Formerlyknown as Decoration Day, itcommemorates U.S. men and women whodied while in the military service.

First enacted to honor Union soldiers ofthe American Civil War (it is celebratednear the day of reunification after the CivilWar), it was expanded after World War I.The first observance was in Waterloo, N.Y.on May 5, 1866. The tombs of fallen Unionsoldiers were decorated in remembrance. Many of the states of the United StatesSouth refused to celebrate Decoration Day,due to lingering hostility towards the UnionArmy.

The alternative name of “Memorial Day”was first used in 1882. Many peopleobserve this holiday by visiting cemeteriesand memorials. So this is a brief history ofone of America’s holidays dedicated to thefallen men and women of America’s ArmedForces.

Here we are lookingforward to our 2nd meetingof the 2010-2011 year. I

said I was looking forward to a GREAT year.I am told it was one of the BEST meetings tostart our year. We had so much to discussand everyone joined in with comments.Thank you so much!

Keep thinking about the baskets weagreed to sponsor for the AEA SOCIALWELFARE program, that Don and Diana Polkare working on. The telephone committeewill talk to you about what to bring for theItalian basket or the picnic basket.

Don’t forget to begin collecting yourCAMPBELL SOUP coupons. They help sucha worthy project, buying equipment for theschool. There is a label box in the foyer.PLEASE LETS SEE COUPONS GATHERING INTHE BOX.

There will be a by-law change to be votedon at the next business meeting. It is VERYIMPORTANT that you be there for your imput.

Yes, I was able to greet 15 ladies at theCeltic Crossing. We had such fun and somuch visting. Looking forward to the sameor more at one of our favorite places, Olivegarden at 11:00 A.M.

See you at the board meeting regulartime 10:00 A.M. May 3, and the BusinessMeeting May 11, 1:00 p.m.

As our Veterans from previous wars andconflicts get older, they continue to need ourhelp, as do those Veterans returning daily fromIraq and Afghanistan. We, as Elks, must neverforget our long-standing pledge, So long asthere are Veterans, the Benevolent andProtective Order of Elks will never forget them.”

In an effort to enhance the level of comfortfor our nation’s Veterans, the Elks NationalVeterans Service Commission teamed up withFederated Wholesale Inc. in 1997 to puttogether comfort care kits. The kits can becustomized to fit any budget, and the plasticbags can be imprinted with the Elks USA logo. Each Lodge across this great free country canhelp our Veterans by providing Comfort CareKits (and they are relatively inexpensive).

These kits have proven to be an integralpart of our Adopt-A-Veteran Program whenpresented with the Adopt-A-VeteranCertificate. They are perfect for Veterans inhospitals, assisted care facilities, nursinghomes and homeless Veteran shelters. Thesekits contain items for personal hygiene, andare available for both men and women. Thereare several types of kits available, and theycan be customized to fit your budget. Allproducts are guaranteed by the FDA, EPA andother Federal agencies to guarantee safe andeffective products. You can purchaseindividual items in case lots as well.

The Federated Wholesale catalogue canbe viewed online at: http://www.federatedcares.com. PLEASE!!! Call or write fortheir catalog today.

Along with the work of our volunteers, these kits give the Elks greater exposureand recognition for the work we performwith and for our nation’s Veterans. Anyquestions regarding this program can bedirected to our Elks National VeteransService Commission in Chicago.

By providing Comfort Care Kits we candemonstrate our pledge: “So long as thereare Veterans, the Benevolent andProtective Order of Elks will never forgetthem.’

It is also important to check with yourlocal and state legislators to make surethey have not passed some new actionsthat could affect the operation of theLodge. Make sure that the Lodge keepsup with pending legislation and how itmight impact your bottom line. Don’t letthis slip up on you.

Also make sure every Lodge Officer,Trustee and Member understands that anElks Lodge must be run as a business.Every Member of the Lodge is on theMembership Committee and should belooking for new Members.

Lastly, the IRS and your State RevenueDepartment (if you have one) are lookingfor additional avenues of some newincomes. Make sure you are not one ofthese. Keep your records up to date, andfollow the Unrelated Business Incomerules to the letter.

If you need. help, contact your DistrictDeputy. They are a good asset.

The approach of Memorial Day laterthis month reminds Exalted Rulers, LodgeOfficers and all of us to assess Lodgeplans to honor Veterans and those fallenin defense of our American way of life. Italso serves, in a broader sense, to tell usit is not too late to review the Lodge plansand goals for this Lodge year. Are Lodgegoals in place and being advancedsatisfactorily?

Memorial Day gives all of us a chanceto ask ourselves if our efforts on behalfof Veterans and Veterans’ families are upto par. Are we doing our best for the Adopt-A-Vet Program? Are we joining in the Armyof Hope? Are we visiting our hospitalizedVets and are we assembling gifts andpersonal care items for them? If not, perhaps it is time to reorganize andreenergize the Lodge National ServiceCommittee. Remembering Vets is basicto all of Elkdom.

The same goes for all other Lodgeprograms. Are the Officers practiced andready to perform an impressive Ritual ofInitiation for a well-oriented class ofcandidates? Is the Elks NationalFoundation Committee planningfundraisers, writing articles for the LodgeBulletin and making sure all Officers aredonors? Is the Americanism Committeeplanning the Flag Day Service, preparingfor the Americanism Essay Contest andsponsoring flags in classrooms? Arefamily participation and communityactivities a prominent part of Lodgecommittee activities?

The committees mentioned here and allother Lodge committees are important tothe soundness of your Lodge. As you tracktheir success, it is not too late in the Lodgeyear to make adjustments to help meet thereasonable goals you have established. Asa leader, it devolves upon you to keep theball rolling. If your Lodge is working hardand meeting or exceeding yourexpectations, good for you! If the Lodge islagging in any area, put your shoulder to thetask and move that ball. Plain and simple, this is your time to ensure that, in yourLodge, “Elks Make A Difference.”

1. Make sure all of your reports(charitable, membership, etc.) have been filedcorrectly and on time. These reports filedonline need to be checked and crosschecked for correctness. And timeliness.

2. Meet with your Lodge accountant tomake sure you are on the same page aboutthe annual audit and report. Discuss thecoming Lodge year and what the Lodge’sexpectations are of the accountant.

3. Have a meeting of the incoming LodgeOfficers and Trustees and discuss plans forthe 2010-2011 Lodge year. Discussimportant topics like unrelated businessincome and Lodge finances.
