Dear Family,
Almost a year ago, a Pew Research Study revealed a disturbing reality about our belief in the Eucharist
as a Church. From those polled, only a about a third revealed they believed that the bread and wine offered
on the altar during Mass was actually the Real Presence of Christ. In other words, two thirds of those
Catholics who were polled believe what we receive at Communion is no communion at all, but merely a
symbol. Immediately those in charge of teaching and preaching from the top down began to discuss ways
we could change this unfortunate and largely shocking revelation. Many supposed the answer was to call
attention to actions taken in and around the Sanctuary. Are we showing enough reverence during Mass?
Do we need to amp up our preaching with Scripture and Church Father references pointing out the Real
Presence? Are we good examples of our faith as clergy by our consistent kneeling, genuflecting, and
bowing? Or maybe we are going about this whole thing wrongly. Maybe the key to return to orthodoxy
has nothing to do with what happens in the church buildings at all. Think about it this way, if you want to
convince others of the Divine Unity in our Broken Bread, then show unity in the Body of Christ. If you
want to persuade others that Jesus is present in the tabernacle, then show equal reverence to His Presence
in others. The truth is these numbers are not shocking at all, because as long as the magnanimous love we
speak of in referencing the Eucharist is out of sight, then what else are we to suppose of this ritual, except
that it all remains a mere shadow of what we proclaim and thus, His presence, merely symbolic.

Padre’s Corner
“As we navigate through slowly reopening the church
and parish buildings, please keep uptodate on our
regulations for each new stage (operating capacity) by
checking our website:www.ologtaos.com, parish social
media accounts, and the office phone message. Fr. Daniel
will be updating us as often as necessary to help us remain
safe as our public parish life becomes active once again.
We are certainly excited, our faith makes this almost
automatic, but our reason must abide as we follow careful
regulations meant to respect the life of our community
members. Let us remain prayerful and reasonable as our
parish navigates through yet more uncharted waters.”
