A reception will follow. This contemporary invitation is nothing like the one reported by Matthew. The king must send out twice for the guests to come to his son’s wedding. The people respond to the royal invitation with indifference or overt hostility. Festivity suddenly gives way to punishment. New guests are gathered at random from the byroads to fill the banquet hall. One poor man is cast into the night, because he had neither the time nor the means to dress for the wedding feast. This strange narrative discloses deeper meaning. The parable sketches in bold strokes the feast of joy and communion to which Israel was first invited. Israel refused to accept the invitation of the prophets and the just ones, even this last invitation offered by Jesus and his apostles. Their city of Jerusalem was destroyed in 70 A.D. by the Romans. The first Christian community took this as the definitive sign that the invitation should be extended to all humanity. But if “the invited are many, the elect are few.” We can be Christian in name, and yet avoid conversion. We can believe that we are invited to the feast of the kingdom, and yet remain indifferent to the empty plates set before so many of the world’s children. It is the baptismal life which counts, not the baptismal certificate. That life is the clothing of which Paul speaks. “You must put on that new man created in God’s image whose justice and holiness are born of truth” (Ephesians 4:24). Without that wedding garment, the wedding invitation counts for nothing in the eyes of the king.

Letter from The ARCHBISHOP Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ: To all of you I owe my gratitude for your support of this year’s Project Advance appeal. Your gift is a source of inspiration and provides the means to continue building a solid foundation of growth for every parish and the wider community of faith. Project Advance gives all of us the opportunity to work together to meet the growing needs of our Archdiocesan family, and to develop our commitment to stewardship as one faith, one Church, and one family. Participation in Project Advance shows that we are striving to live the Gospel; people working and giving together, helping to make our community and lives richer through faith and service. This annual appeal makes our parishes vital communities and enables us to reach out to those who are struggling and marginalized. Project Advance had a record year in 2016, raising $7.6 million. For those who have not yet made a gift this year, I ask that you consider supporting Project Advance 2017. Your gift will allow your parish to meet its special needs. Let us continue to support one another and give thanks to the Lord for the many blessings of faith, family and treasure that he has bestowed on us. Invoking God’s abundant grace upon you and your family, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ,

+J. Michael Miller, CSB Archbishop of Vancouver

MAINTAINING A PRAYERFUL ENVIRONMENT

Also, we ask that once you have received the Eucharist, you not linger at the rail, but allow others also to approach the rail after you. Thank you.

TWENTY EIGHTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME OCTOBER 15, 2017

Prayers of the Faithful: 1. That the Church on earth may thrive and grow and draw to the

feast of the kingdom, let us pray to the Lord. 2. That rich and poor alike may not make excuses to evade the call

to the kingdom, let us pray to the Lord. 3. That through our apostolic efforts we may provide the hungry

with their share of God’s bounty, let us pray to the Lord. 4. That we may be found worthy to come to the supper of the lamb

of God, let us pray to the Lord. 5. That our young people thoughtfully consider a vocation to the

Priesthood or Consecrated Life, let us pray to the Lord. 6. “For an end to abortion and euthanasia, let us pray to the Lord.” 7. For the intentions close to our heart (pause for 5 seconds), let us

pray to the Lord.
