Chilli JamMakes approximately 1.5 litres

150 g long fresh red chillies, each de-seeded and cut into about 4 pieces150 g red peppers, cored, de-seeded and cut into rough chunks1 kg jam sugar 600 ml cider vinegar

Put the cut-up chillies into a food processor and pulse until they are finely chopped.

Add the chunks of red pepper and pulse again until you have a vibrantly red-specked processor bowl.

Dissolve the sugar in the vinegar in a wide medium-sized pan over a low heat without stirring. Scrape the chilli-pepper mixture out of the bowl and add to the pan. Bring the pan to the boil, then leave it at a rolling-boil for 10 minutes.

Take the pan off the heat and allow it to cool. The liquid will become more syrupy, then from syrup to viscous and from viscous to jelly-like as it cools.

After about 40 minutes, or once the red flakes are more or less evenly dispersed in the jelly (as the liquid firms up, the bits of chilli and pepper start being suspended in it rather than floating on it), ladle into your jars. If you want to stir gently at this stage, it will do no harm.

KINGS BROMLEY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETYwww.kingsbromleyshow.co.uk

The Kings Bromley Show organised by the Society is the major village event of the year. It takes twelve month’s work on the part of a few volunteers to achieve this, and the support of more members of the village in this endeavour would be wonderful. There is a lot of work for a few people, so if you could help organise something in advance, or help on the day, please let us know who you are. There is only one way to help, and that is to let someone know you are willing. Please ring either the Show Organisers Allan Howard on 01543 472720 or Paul Bowns on 01543 472942 or the Society Secretary Judith Berry on 01543 472441. There are so many things to be done, and so few people who will offer to help do them. Many country shows have ceased through lack of volunteers. The Society ...

Helps the Community. Enriching village life is one of the Society’s aims. On the Show Field itself benches have been put in place; stiles on the public footpath have been replaced by kissing gates and native species of trees have been planted, some of which have been dedicated to the memory of committed Society Members.

Projects undertaken in the past few years include the production of four leaflets describing walks around the parish (available free); the provision of a pictorial map of the Parish on display in the church with a copy outside the Village Hall (unframed limited edition prints available at £10); the planting of daffodil bulbs in the grass verge alongside the Show Field; funding via the Parish Council for a dog-waste bin in Vicarage Lane, another outside the Show Field, a litter bin in the nearest lay-by and a substantial contribution to repair and replace village notice boards. The Society takes the ownership of its Show Field very seriously. Work is constantly in progress to maintain this open space for enjoyment by the whole community. The Cricket Club, Football Club, Youth Group and The Richard Crosse Church of England School use the field on a regular basis. Whenever possible the Society makes the field available to others. The Society ...

Helps Village Organisations. Direct help in the form of grants have been provided in a number of cases, including: the Pre-School Group; the Village Hall; Nursing Home Fundraisers; Churchyard Maintenance Team; Swifts Football, Bowling, Snooker and Credo Clubs. The Open Gardens Weekends are fully funded so that all money raised can be donated to charity. The Society also helps by providing a free opportunity for groups to raise their own funds by playing a part in the Show, and also by making the Society’s field available for outdoor events.

Please Become a Member. A membership fee of £6 (January to December) gives free admission to the Show on production of the membership card for an adult and child, a quarterly newsletter, opportunities to make comments and suggestions on the running of the Society and Show, attendance at the AGM, and the satisfaction of helping to maintain a valued Kings Bromley tradition. Please support the Society by becoming a Member. Contact Pam Smith, Membership Secretary, 4 Kings Walk, Kings Bromley, Burton on Trent, DE13 7JU, or ring 01543 473304.

Please help to ensure the future of Kings Bromley Show
