I like to reminisce with people I dont know.

    Parking problem

WESTMINSTER Park Residents Association (WPRA) chairman Allan Stobie has rged

motorists on the estate not to park on the pavement.

He told the WPRA annal meeting: I have noticed that a lot of cars are being parked

partially on the pavement. This is not a recommended practice because, rstly, theconstruction of footpaths is to a much lower specication than roadways and eventually

the surface will break up or subside. Secondly, it often makes it difcult for mums with

pshchairs or disabled people to get past the obstrction withot diverting into the road,

which is obviosly very dangeros. Please think before parking.

    Play date

PLAY Day 2010 is to be held in Westminster Park on Tesday 10th Agst. Organised

by CWAC Concil, there will be a climbing wall, water chte and many other pieces of

eqipment. Watch ot for posters in yor school.

    Glan Aber Tennis Club

The Clb was fonded in 1908 and is now located in Westminster Park. There are for

all-weather corts, which have been refrbished in the last two years and one mini tennis

cort. There is a private clbhose with changing facilities.

There are adlt clb nights on Tesday from 6.30 pm and less experienced adlts meet

on Thrsday. Tesday mornings are also proving poplar. There are tornaments for

jniors and occasional adlt social events sch as Tennis and a Takeaway. The Clb

rns mens, ladies and mixed teams.

For frther information, please contact Se Britton on 01244 677936.

    Westminster Park Gardening Club

THE rst two meetings have been well attended and two more events are planned this

year. The next is an evening gided tor of Ness Gardens on Thrsday 15th Jly, 6.30pm,

with Andy Lambie who lectres in Horticltre at Ness.

For info email the chairman Mike Pollard at [email protected] or ring 675222.

On 29th September there will be a meeting in the commnity centre at 7.45pm for an 8pm

start with a frit and vegetable swap planned.

Dropping off is disaster waiting to happen

THE subject of parents dropping off children outside Belgrave School wasdiscussed at the recent Westminster Park Residents Association meeting.

The WPRA has written to the headmistress about the problem of parents letting

children out onto the road instead of the pavement.

Chairman Alllan Stobie said: It is considered that with so many cars dropping off

that this is a disaster waiting to happen. It is in the interest of the childrens health

that they should walk, if at all possible, or if not please think before opening the car

    door.

Jane Bryant says your feet deserve a little TLC

  • 8/9/2019 Overleigh Roundabout July 2010

    19/36

SUMMER is the time or bringing out

our eet which have been cocooned in

thick socks and tights, sheepskin boots

and winter shoes during a particularl

cold, long winter. As ou slip into those

sandals or fip fops, that eeling o

summer is here! Its reedom or oureet.

Beore slipping into that summer mode

did you happen to glance down at those

eet? Bearing in mind our eet are the

urthest extremity rom our eyes, when

did you honestly last closely inspect their

    condition?

Having your eet in tip top condition isnot just so that they look attractive, but

healthy eet reect your general health

    and your deportment.

Taking a shower is more popular than

bathing, but paying attention to washing

your eet with soap or shower gel in the

shower is so much more dicult than

washing your eet in the bath. However,

just by letting the water run over your eetand then not drying properly between

your toes is a breeding ground or ungal

    inections such as athletes oot.

    Wearing ill-ftting shoes and slopping

around in loose ftting winter boots can

cause a build up o hard skin, calluses

and even corns and in growing toenails.

    Leaving these conditions untreated can

cause us to change the way we walk, which in time lead to back problems, poor

deportment and oot pain. For chronic

oot pain we do recommend that you do

    visit your local podiatrist.

Having a regular pedicure helps keep

your eet in tip top condition. At The

Hough Green Clinic ater inspecting your

eet we remove hard skin with an electric

skin smoother that melts away the hardskin. We then exoliate the eet and apply

a mask that literally ingests dry skin. Ater

a warm, bubbling, vibrating, aromatic ootsoak we pay attention to cuticles, nails and

any remaining hard skin. A massage o the

toes, eet, ankles and lower legs ollows. To

fnish nail colour is applied i required. The

pedicure takes between one and one and

    a hal hours.

    An additional treatment we recommend

is a skin peel or the eet or deep

    exoliation and ultimate rehydration at36.

I saw a bank that said 24 Hour Banking, but I dont have that much time.

WHEN regular columnist PeterColhoun invited me for a foot as-sessment I was certainly not going

to refuse.Normally, Im a little nervous about seeking medical

treament but this time I was grateul. As a regular runner, I am used to the aches and pains

that inevitably ollow training runs. But this year it was dierent. I was unable to shake

o a persistent ankle injury which got progressivelyworse over the months. It became so bad that thetraining stopped altogether and I abandoned myplans or the Chester Hal Marathon. So I dropped in at the clinic, at 137 Hough

Green, last month to see i Peter couldnd the solution to my problem.Peter was very welcoming and

seemed remarkably unperturbed atthe prospect o looking at my eet!Ater removing my trainers andsocks, I sat on the treatment tablewhere Peter poked and prodded vari-ous parts o my eet and ankles. He then produced a protractor to

work out how fexible - or otherwise -my joints were.Later, I was asked to walk up and

down the room at least a dozen timesso that Peter could take a closer lookat my gait.

He was able to diagnose that my pain was emanatingrom my fat eet which was pulling on the achillestendon and the tibia (shin bone). My next job was to stand in two boxes which took a

mould o my eet. Te moulds have now been sent oto America which will be used as the basis or special

inserts to go into my shoes and trainers rom now on.Peter qualied as a podiatrist 12 years ago, and sincethen has developed a special interest in biomechanicsand walking/gait assessments. He says its amazing that most o us check the

balancing and tracking on our cars regularly butwe never have our own postural and walking habitsassessed! Tis should be important to us, as conserva-tive estimates indicate that we each walk an averageo 5,000 steps each day or enough to take us ve

times around the globe in a lietime!Peter enjoys the practical application o biomechani-cal treatment, by using specialist shoe insoles (pre-scription orthoses) where indicated to help balanceyour skeleton and body when standing, walking or

running. He points out that so many o our oot

and leg problems originate rom theway we walk and stand.I will have the insoles tted later

this month and will report back ontheir success in the August edition. So, i you have any aches and pains

in your eet and legs then its denitelyworth paying a visit to Peter. He may

well have the answer.Contact Peter today or a ree chat, orto arrange an appointment on 620 249or visit his website at www.petercol-houn.com

    Q. Help! I have very puffy skin below my eyes. What can I do to

    reduce the pufness?

    A. This qestion is asked so freqently that I have decided to give an

    extended answer to yor qestion.

The soltion to pffy eyes will depend very mch on the case of the

pufness. If you have always had puffy eyes, this may indicate that you

are genetically predisposed to having fatty deposits in this area; or, the

pufness could be a result of ageing when the fat pads beneath the skin

start to shift altering the eye contor. In both of these instances there is

really is no cre other than with srgery.

However, if your eyes arent usually puffy and you awake to nd your

under eye area is swollen, this type of pufness is relatedto inammation. Firstly, you need to apply something to

redce the swelling. Cold compresses are a good, qick and

inexpensive soltion becase cold cases swollen skin to

contract. Soak cotton wool pads or a piece of clean cloth

in cold (not icy cold) water, or apply a gel-lled eye mask

    from the refrigerator.

Cold ccmber slices are also helpfl, bt they work

becase they are cool, not becase they have any magical

ingredient. Yo can also apply sed, cooled tea bags,

however they need to be the caffeinated type as the

caffeine together with the tannins helps to contract thedistended skin. Whatever yo decide to se, lightly press

the cold compress on the pffy areas for several mintes to

    help the swelling sbside.

Continual pufng up and then deating of the delicate

skin arond the eyes will eventally lead to eye bags and

wrinkling so its important to nd the cause of the pufness.

If yo wear eye makep ensre that yo are removing all

traces every night. Avoid sing an oily eye makep remover

as this can often cause pufness.

Whilst on the sbject of skin care prodcts make sre thatyou use a product specically designed for the delicate

eye area and se the prodct very sparingly. A bead of

eye cream abot the size of a grain of rice is ample for the

eye area. Dring the daytime it is also important that yor

eye cream contains a snscreen to prevent the thin, fragile

skin arond the eyes from prematre wrinkling. Check the

ingredient list of yor skin care prodcts to ensre that

they do not contain fragrance. Throw ot any prodcts that

    contain fragrance.

Rubbing the eyes can also lead to pufness and check out

any allergies that yo may have from pollens or food withyor GP.

    RECIPERHUBARB AND APPLE CHARLOTTE

    Method:

    1. Pre-heat the oven to 220C/425F/Gas Mark

7 and have ready six 7-8 x 5cm individal metal

    pdding molds or a 12.5 x 6-7cm cake tin.

    2. Cut six bread discs to t the bases of the

moulds and six to t the tops. Cut away the

crsts of the remaining slices and slice into

    approx. 3cm ngers.

    3. Btter all of the bread on one side only.

Then place a disc, btter side down, in the

base of each mould. The ngers can now be

laid, btter-side against the mold, slightly

    overlapping all the way rond.

    To make the fruit lling:

    4. Peel the rhbarb, if stringy, and ct into 1cm

    chnks.

    5. Melt half of the btter in a large sacepan

and, once bbbling, add the rhbarb.

    6. Trn the frit pieces in the pan for 1 mintebefore adding 50g of caster sgar. Contine to

    cook for a frther minte.

    7. The rhbarb can now be strained in a

colander, allowing the sweet jices to collect in

    a bowl.

    8. While draining the rhbarb, the apples can

also be prepared. Peel, core and ct each into

eight wedges. The wedges can now be ct in

    half, leaving chnky pieces.

    9. Melt the remaining btter in a sacepan,

    adding the apples once bbbling.

    10. Cook for 2 mintes before adding the

remaining sgar. Contine to cook for 1-2

    mintes then leave to cool.

    11. The rhbarb will now have drained. Take

a qarter of the frit pieces and mix with the

jices collected, bring to a simmer and cook

    ntil tender.

    12. Once tender, liqidize and psh throgh

a sieve. Yo now have fresh rhbarb syrp to

    serve with the charlottes.

    13. Once both frits have cooled, gently mix

together. It is best now to taste for sweetness.

If the avour is too tart, add a sprinkling of

    caster or icing sgar.

    14. Divide the mix between the charlottes and

top with the lids. Any excess bread at the sides

shold be folded over to keep the lids in place.15. For individal charlottes bake in the pre

heated oven for 20 mintes, a large charlotte

    will take 40 45 mintes.

    16. Once cooked, trn ot the charlottes onto

plates and reveal the crispy golden nish, then

spoon the rhbarb syrp arond and serve.

    Serves 6

    Ingredients:

    450g stale bread (approx. 12-18

    slices)

    Softened butter, for spreading

    450g fresh rhubarb

    50g butter

    75g caster sugar

    Three green desert apples

Recipe by Leigh Myers, Exective Chef at Nelson (Northwest) Hotels [email protected]

Tip: Fresh cream, custard or ice

I was walking down the street wearing glasses when the prescription ran out.

JULy HIGH SUMMERGARDENING By JANET HEATH

IN July, many of the owering shrubs

are over and colour comes from the

    perennials in your garden.

Cool bles can be fond in lavenders

which enjoy hot dry sitations and will seed

themselves into gravel if yo have a gravel

path or drive. Lavender Hidcote with dark ble

owers is a smaller shrub than the originalEnglish Lavender which has longer stems of

pale blue owers. Both look good bordering

a path or near a seating area where yo can

brsh against the foliage to release the scent.

They can die off in hard winters and tend to

become sparse with age so expect to replacethem after a few years. Once owering is over,

clip the shrb back bt do not ct back into

wood withot green growth. Lavenders do not

sprout new shoots from leaess wood.

Try planting lavender with deep prple sage

plants for contrast in foliage color and textre.

There are some good robst perennials that

ower in July that will come up year after year

and reqire little attention. If yo want vibrantmagenta color, try the perennial geranim

Ann Folkard. The plant is not very tall and

produces stems of owers with black andmagenta pink owers from summer to autumn.

Cut off the stems after owering and moreshold be prodced in atmn.

Plant the geranim with a yellow Hemerocallis

or day lily for a bright and cheerfl display of

    contrasting shapes and colors. Hemerocallis

come in a range of large and small varieties

with grassy or strap like leaves and tall heads

    of lily owers in July.

In the vegetable garden, plant ot winter leeks

and brassicas sch as broccoli and sprots.

Sow lettce when the weather is cooler, germination of lettce seeds is poor in high

temperatres so wait for a cooler period before

sowing seed. Net frit sch as strawberries

and bleberries so the birds do not eat the frit

rst. Raspberries seem to be largely immune

probably as the frit is not so easy for birds to

    reach.
