PRESIDENT RICHARD GREEN’S REPORT

It is over a month since the last bulletin and a number of things have happened since then.

The meeting on the 9 April was a youth night and we heard from our RYLA and RIC students. Unfortunately our summer science student was unable to attend.

The meeting on the 29 April, our ANZAC meeting, was held at the new extension to the Hyde Park War Memorial . It was very good to be in the building by ourselves and we were lucky they agreed to open it, especially at night, for us. Unfortunately when we change the meeting to Monday the number of members

attending dropped off. There were 13 members and 8 partners. The visit was followed by a meal at a Thai restaurant arranged by Sue Ward.

We had a Bunnings barbecue on 27 April and the profit was $1000. We need to work out whether the profit is down due to reduced sales or the increased cost of our goods.

On 3 May we did a barbecue for the mothers at Roseville Public School. We served 400 people with eggs and bacon rolls. We had help from Nick Brooke and John Hammond. The school presented us with a small gift for each of the helpers. The next meeting, 14 May, is a Foundation night with PDG Pam Pritchard attending representing The Foundation. l have made it a partners night so we have good attendance . We will also be giving our annual donation to the Foundation and Polio Plus. The AG, Fiona Jenkins, will also be in attendance.

We are going to have to start thinking about the fun run as it is less than 3 months before the event. Michael Harrowell will look after the organization on the day, but if we want sponsors we need to start thinking about that now.

The Entertainment Books are now available from Peter Lefmann.

The club has to decide if the extent of the fund raising for next year will be only the fun run and Bunnings . We have been asked to have a joint golf day with Chatswood Rotary in October. The funds will go to a project in East Timor.

Richard GreenPresident.

No English dictionary has been able to adequately explain the difference between these two words. In a recent linguistic competition held in London and attended by, supposedly, the best in the world, Samdar Balgobin, a Guyanese man, was the clear winner with a standing ovation which lasted over 5 minutes.

The final question was: ‘How do you explain the difference between COMPLETE and FINISHED in a way that is easy to understand? Some people say there is no difference between COMPLETE and FINISHED. Here is Samdar’s astute answer:“When you marry the right woman, you are COMPLETE. When you marry the wrong woman, you are FINISHED. And when the right one catches you with the wrong one, you are COMPLETELY FINISHED!” He won a trip around the world and a case of 25 year old Scotch!

GRAMMAR LESSON: DIFFERENCE; “COMPLETE” AND “FINISHED”

LAST MEETING - 29 APRILVISIT TO WAR MEMORIAL, HYDE PARK

Last Monday, 13 members and 8 partners enjoyed a conducted visit and tour, led by Sgt James Grey (from the War Memorial) through the 2018 extensions to the War Memorial in Hyde Park, with 19 afterwards gathering at the nearby Thai Restaurant for dinner.

Below are a few relevant facts about the War Memorial and the 2018 extensions;

•The Anzac Memorial Centenary Extension, completed on 20 October 2018.•The $40m capital redevelopment is the centrepiece of NSW’s Centenary of Anzac commemorations. It’s also the 100th anniversary of the ending of the First World War.•This Centenary Extension realises architect Bruce Dellit’s original concept for the 84-year-old Memorial.•Now a contemporary interpretation of the water cascade on the southern side of the Memorial completes the original 1930’s concept design.•As the State’s principal Memorial, the Centenary Extension enhances the Memorial’s founding role to support and provide services for veterans and their families who have suffered loss while ensuring a public and a private place of contemplation, remembrance, education and reflection.•The Anzac Memorial attracts nearly 200,000 visitors annually.•Dellit had originally envisioned two water features running on a north-south axis to the Memorial, but due to the impact of the Great Depression only the Pool of Reflection north of the Memorial was ever built.•A walkway through the cascade allows Memorial visitors to enter the new Hall of Service, exhibition galleries and education facilities, providing a contemporary understanding of the history and impact of conflict.•The Hall of Service, pays tribute to those across NSW who served in the Great War; featuring 1,701 soil samples from each NSW town, suburb and district given as a place of address by First World War enlistees. •Soil has also been collected from 100 battle sites of significance to NSW military history - from19th Century battles through to modern-day Australian peacekeeping missions to honour more than a century of service.•Eight glass urns, each hand-etched by Fiona Hall with an image of a different plant species associated with Australia’s service in the First World War are showcased at the entrances to the Hall of Service.•The extension also houses the Royal United Services Institute for Defence and Security Studies NSW Library, a military history research collection assessed to be of national significance.•The Dome is covered with approximately 120,000 stars - a symbolic representation of the men and women from New South Wales who embarked for overseas service during the Great War.

•Architectural firm Johnson Pilton Walker designed the Centenary Extension in collaboration with the NSW Government Architect. •The builder of the extensions was Built.

The above photos are from the promotion material of the Memorial, and are a bit more “professional” than our photos, but neverthless I have included some of our photos on the following page as a personal touch.

All who attended the visit agree that it was a most interesting, sometimes sobering, and reflective tour and informative presentation from James Grey.

Even without a guided tour, anyone would find the visit to the Memorial most interesting and informative.

Many thanks to Richard Green for organising the visit, and Sue Ward for the excellent organisation of the dinner afterwards.

WINE AND CHEESE TASTING NIGHTThe wine and cheese tasting night was a very successful and enjoyable night, with over 90 people attending and a profit of $4,050 plus for the night.Special thanks and appreciation to Neil Howie for his exceptional organisational and promotional efforts for the night.Many thanks also to all those who assisted with the cheese and food arrangements, and for set up and tidy up, of the event.

ROSEVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOL MOTHERS DAY BBQ

Many thanks to the 11 members and John Hammond (Friend of Rotary) who assisted with the Mother’s Day breakfast at the Roseville Public School on Friday 3 May.

A hectic morning for the food dispensers who managed capably with the multi-coloured beads offered by the mothers and students, which indicated whether it was “Bread Roll with Bacon”, “Bread Roll with Egg”, “Bread Roll with Bacon and Egg”, or something else. Over 400 people were served.

The “egg-cookers” managed to produce soft, hard, “somewhat scrambled” and sunny-side up eggs for the mothers and students, to enjoy with the bacon.Some photos follow;

Peter Lefmann, Ian Fraser and Sue Ward, collecting the “beads” and issuing the bread rolls to the mothers and students.
