AUGUST 2016More Than We Ask or Imagineby Dr. Jody Bowser, Senior Pastor

Welcome: Jay Brown P. 5 • New Partners P. 9 • Join the New Wave of Welcoming P. 15

MESSENGEREphesians 3:20 tells us God is able to do immeasurably more

than we can ask or imagine—according to HIS power that is at work within us. This truth is at work in our lives even when the situations we find ourselves in seem like anything BUT the work of God. To illustrate this I want to share with you the story of a man named Adoniram Judson.

Young Adoniram was a brilliant child. At the age of 12 he taught the adult Sunday school class at his local Congregational church. His topic was the book of Revelation, and he taught from the original Greek text! But in college, Judson became exceedingly proud…so proud that he disavowed his faith. He went to Brown University in Rhode Island and was so accomplished in debate that he would talk other believers out of their faith. His roommate was a man named Jacob Eames, with whom he became good friends. Jacob entered college a believer, but left professing to be an atheist—and gave credit for that decision to Adoniram Judson.

A number of years after graduating from Brown, Judson decided to get involved in the theater scene in New York City. These were

“I am fully and absolutely convinced that God is

constantly in the process of weaving every single detail

of our lives together in a way that is designed to draw

us closer to Him.”

obviously the days before the automobile, so he rode his horse into the city for an inter-view. On his return trip to Massachusetts, Judson was exhausted and stopped for the night in one of the many small towns to get a hotel room. He told the hotel manager that he would like to just sleep in the lobby for a few hours, but the manager told him about a room that no one else would take. It was next to the room of a man who was dying—and there was literally a stench that was coming from that room. Additionally, the dying man was crying out in fits of profanity in his pain. Judson was so tired that he took the room free of charge, claiming that it wouldn’t bother him.

It did bother him though. Judson lay awake, covering his head with a pillow, trying to mute the dying man’s cries. Eventually the cries died down and Judson fell asleep. The next morning he asked at the front desk what happened? Did the man feel better? Did he survive? No, he was told, the man died in the early hours of the morning. Judson then asked, “Out of curiosity, what do you do when a stranger dies in your inn?” The manager responded, “Yes, it does pose a problem. And as I’ve looked over his papers and tried to contact his next of kin, I cannot put together how a man of his credentials and brilliance has died such an anonymous death all alone like this in these conditions. He was an honors graduate from Brown University in Rhode Island—and his name was Jacob Eames.”

In his biography To The Golden Shores, Judson says, “I got onto my horse and I couldn’t see in front of me for the tears were pouring down my face. And two words were pounding into my heart as the hooves of the horse were pounding into the ground. The two words were… ‘death / hell / death / hell / death / hell…’” Adoniram Judson got off his horse, knelt in the dusty road and repented

bitterly of the way he betrayed his God and the damnation he brought upon Jacob Eames. His life was forever changed. He would do whatever he sensed God calling him to do.

The call, he sensed, was to foreign shores as an ambassador of the Gospel. He and his wife, Ann, first went to India but they were kicked out of Calcutta. They then went on toBurma (their first child died of a miscarriage on the ship), where Ann died of the Asian flu. Judson remarried, Sarah, but eleven years later she died as well. Not only that, but three more of his children died, as well as most of his missionary colleagues.

It took Judson seven years to lead one Burmese person to Christ and there were only eighteen converts in his first twelve years. Eventually, though, there seemed to be an opening of the door with numerous converts, causing Burmese authorities to imprison Judson for his evangelistic efforts. Following eighteen months in prison, he was put on a ship, nearly unrecognizable, bound for the United States. The authorities were shipping him back to the U.S. believing he would die on the way, which is exactly what happened.

In Molden, Massachusetts, there’s a small gravestone which reads: “Adoniram Judson; Born August 9, 1788; Died April 12, 1850; The Ocean Is His Grave; The Burmese Bible Is His Monument; His Record Is On High.”

Remember me mentioning that Judson was reading Greek at the age of 12? You see, he was a prodigy at learning and translating languages. During all of those years that he was laboring away, mired in grief, with very little obvious “fruit,” Judson was creating a grammar of the Burmese language that is still in use today. In addition to this, he was translating the Gospel of Matthew and eventually the entire Bible.

Burmese folklore has it that there was a legend that “a man would come with a book

which would have the Truth in it.” Adoniram Judson was that man. If you were to visit a Burmese (now called Myanmar) church today, and asked to see a Bible, you would find that they are still using the very same Bible that Judson translated over 150 years ago. You would also learn that over 2 million Burmese Christians can trace their faith back to a man who labored seven excruciating years without one convert, lost his own life, the lives of two of his wives and four of his children for his faith. He is the very same man that is known to have said, “The future is as bright as the promises of God.”

This story teaches us some very important truths.

• Nothing happens by random chance. I am fully and absolutely convinced that God is constantly in the process of weaving every single detail of our lives together in a way that is designed to draw us closer to Him. It was no coincidence that Jacob Eames was dying in the room right next door to Judson.

• God is, indeed, able to do more than we ask or even imagine. But that doesn’t mean that the results will be immediate. Thinking of my own life—my Dad made a significant spiritual impact on me; and, his aunt, who died while my Dad was still in his teens, made a significant impact on him. This means that my life has been significantly and eternally affected by a wheelchair-bound woman who died in relative obscurity more than 70 years ago because of the way she loved and prayed for her young nephew. Only in heaven will we see the far-reaching impact of the service we offer to Christ in the here and now.

• God has given each of us gifts/talents/abilities/passions that are to be used to further His kingdom, even when we might

not see how vital or important these things are. Judson might have thought evangelism was why he was called to Burma, but his aptitude for languages (which was evident very early in his life) proved to be an invaluable resource in God’s greater plan.

held each year since 1998. During the week teens from area churches renovate and repair homes for residents of Franklin County who are unable to make the repairs themselves due to physical limitations or financial circum-stances. The students spend the week at the Career Magnet School. In the evenings they join together for devotions, guest speakers and praise and worship.

The Street first partnered with this local project back in 2000. For almost the last decade, it has become our middle school summer mission project, even though we have a lot of great high school students who serve as well.

God gave us the opportunity to love on those who needed it in our own backyard.

This year there were 25 students and adults from King Street who served during the week, as well as many others who served in the kitchen or on the leadership team of Chambersburg

2016 Chambersburg Project Recapby John ShadlePastor of Middle School & College Ministries

During the week of July 10-15, over 90 students and 60 adults from various local churches got “Messy for Jesus” by traveling around Franklin County to do yard work, paint homes, build decks, and do other various jobs for those that were in need.

Despite the scorching heat and the long days of service, this year’s Chambersburg Project was a major success.

If you are unfamiliar with the Chambers-burg Project, it is a weeklong mission project

Page 5: P. 5 New Partners P. MESSENGER · 2016. 8. 15. · Judson for his evangelistic efforts. Following eighteen months in prison, he was put on a ship, nearly unrecognizable, bound for

Project. This year’s theme was to “Get Messy for Jesus,” and our group was encouraged toget out of our comfort zones and “get messy” by truly loving God and loving others through service and in other areas.

The Chambersburg Project has been instru-mental in the lives of the students who have served over the years. Ashlyn Bubak, who had served four summers when she was a student, had this to say about the Chambersburg Project:

Being involved in Chambersburg Project for four summers has really impacted my spiritual journey for the better. I would like to say that I’m a doer and I love helping people, so why not do it for Jesus. Starting in 6th grade, Chambersburg Project is where and when I gave my life to Christ. Ever since then, I have had my struggles with judging others and dealing with broken friendships, but I can honestly say, God has never left my side. Each time I participate in Chambers-burg Project, it makes me realize that the more I read God’s word, and consume my life with Him, the less I am to wander and feel alone. Overall Chambersburg Project has helped me grow closer to God every single summer through helping those in need right in our own neighborhoods. This year was no different. On the last

evening of the trip, our King Street team met to talk about what God was challenging us to do. It was a powerful time of sharing about steps that students wanted to take in their relationships with God, their desires to serve others more and their need to share Jesus with others. The Chambersburg Project team was blessed by having the opportunity to serve our neighbors here in Franklin County. God gave us the opportunity to love those who needed it in our own backyard.

King Street Church, thank you for your resources, support and prayers in helping make this year’s Chambersburg Project a success.

Welcome: Jay Brownby Susanna AllenCommunications Assistant

A few weeks ago we announced that Jay Brown has been hired to our staff as Pastor of Mission and Discipleship. We are thrilled that Jay has sensed the call of God to this position and believe he will be a tremendous addition to our team.

Jay was drawn to the position when he rec-ognized that the dual focus was uniquely suited to his gifts. He has led discipleship ministries for most of the past 20 years, across a variety of ages and settings.

While Jay has invested a significant portion of his career to discipleship, his roots are in missions and the global Church remains one of his greatest passions.

In his cover letter Jay shared, “My pursuit of

Page 6: P. 5 New Partners P. MESSENGER · 2016. 8. 15. · Judson for his evangelistic efforts. Following eighteen months in prison, he was put on a ship, nearly unrecognizable, bound for

6

Christ took a great leap forward when I started to participate in what God was doing in the world, and I have enjoyed inspiring other people in that direction and seeing the resulting steps of faith ever since.”

Jay received his undergraduate degree in Political Science from the University of Illi-nois and a Master of Divinity from Trinity International University. Early in his career, he worked with Youth for Christ in the former Soviet Union. He later served as the Programs Director of Bright Hope International, where he organized development projects and col-laborated with international partners to bring physical relief and spiritual truth to people living on less than $1 a day.

In his current position as the Associate Pastor of a church in the Chicago area, Jay has had the opportunity to lead multiple teams of people, provide oversight for volunteers, organize community outreach projects, initiate marriage enrichment programs, lead disciple-ship and assimilation programs, and share in pastoral responsibilities including preaching and teaching.

The Search Team recognized that Jay is a forward-thinking leader with zeal and vision; he is relational and excels at both leading and collaborating with diverse groups of people. His extensive experience in organizing missions teams and discipleship programs is especially valuable.

Jay shared that as he learned about King Street Church, he was intrigued by “your authentic desire to follow and proclaim Christ, serve your community and grow in disciple-ship.”

These ideals matched up with his own, and it was confirmation that Jay’s ministry will be used to take us to a new level of engaging and blessing our community with the Gospel.

Jay and his wife, Sue, have two sons, Zach and Josh. They are hopeful to move to Cham-bersburg before the new school year starts. This means they are trying to bring closure to

their current ministry, pack, sell their home and move in a space of several weeks. Please pray for God’s favor in making this a reality and for grace during this challenging time.

Help is Needed for the Distribution

The Back-to-School Community Event is a real-life way to do what we are called to do — engage and bless our community with the Gospel! Teach Us to Prayby Nancy FritzPrayer Ministry

One day Jesus was praying in a certain place. When he finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). Some other translations say, “Lord, teach us a prayer to recite.” The next verses include the words we all know as “The Lord’s Prayer,” which, before 1963, was recited in all United States public schools every morning before classes began. Here’s another common prayer we learned as a youngster: “God is great, God is good and we thank Him for this food.” We were young and recited them often so they were forever set in our minds.

There’s a plethora of learning awaiting anyone who takes the time to read, digest and practice any/all areas of prayer written by dozens of qualified authors, many of whom are already in heaven: E.M. Bounds, D.L. Moody, Andrew Murray, Richard Burr, Warren Wiersbe, A.W. Tozer, etc.

A.W. Tozer, who died in 1963, said, “Giving a course on how to pray is as ridiculous as giving a course on how to fall in love. When the Holy Spirit comes, He takes the things of God and translates them into language our hearts can understand.”

The Holy Spirit has a major role in our prayer life, but with all due respect to Mr. Tozer, I have wished many times that someone had taught me more about prayer when I was young. Since I didn’t grow up in a Christian home, I had no one to model prayer or Bible reading. When I was 4 or 5 years old, my older cousin started to “walk me” to Sunday school. I loved the Bible stories and songs. I remember putting my pennies in the plate with others while singing, “Dropping, dropping, dropping, dropping, hear the pennies fall: Everyone for Jesus, He will get them all.” I folded my hands and bowed my head with the others when the teacher prayed, but

throughout my teen years I don’t remember any lessons that taught us why or how to pray. When I received Jesus as my Savior at age 13, the Holy Spirit ignited the spark of desire to want to know God—to know how to talk to

God has given me a passion for prayer and a longing to see others learn and grow in this vital area of their Christian life.

Him and to hear Him talking to me; to become a personal friend of the God, who loved me enough to die on a cross so that I could have everlasting life. This longing began more than 50 years ago and continues today.

Perhaps some of you had/have similar expe-riences. Maybe you’re a new believer. If so, I pray this series of articles offering basic biblical guidelines about prayer will be helpful. I am not an expert. I have no theological degrees. Many of you already know far more than I’ll ever know about prayer.

But, because I knew so little and stumbled so long, God has given me a passion for prayer and a longing to see others learn and grow in this vital area of their Christian life. Lord willing, the monthly Messenger will include information that will interest you, challenge you and move you on in your moment by moment, day by day walk with none other than God Himself (Eph. 6:18).

Comments or questions on the subject of prayer may be sent to: [email protected].

Coming Soon: Adoptive Family Support GroupThe Orphan Care and Adoption

Ministry is pleased to announce the for-mation of an Adoptive Family Support Group. Under the auspices of the Local Outreach Commission, this group is hoping to hold its first meeting in late September at King Street Church. More details will be coming in the near future as they relate to the time, date and exact location.

The hope is that this will be a time for foster and adoptive families within the King Street family to have an oppor-tunity to share with one another their common experiences of joy and frus-tration, of excitement and heartache, of exhilaration and exhaustion in a way that will benefit all involved.

This support group will be open to those who have already adopted, to those who are in the midst of the adop-tion process and to those who may be just now considering God’s calling to adopt. Families that care for children through foster care are also invited. Child care will be provided.August 14, 2016

A Once More Ministries distribu-tion was held June 11 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon. We started with a time of prayer so that we would be led by the Holy Spirit to be the hands and feet of the Lord and show his love to all.

As we greeted the people through-out the morning, the response from many was of gratitude and truly a blessing. There was an outpouring of the Holy Spirit’s love as we were reacquainted with many familiar faces and met many new friends.

There were less requests for prayer, but those who did want prayer were very receptive. Schedules for King Street Church services along with invitations were given to each family along with their box of toiletries. This ministry is about building relation-ships as well as supplying toiletries.

With God’s help through your gener-ous outpouring of giving, we were able to provide necessities to 108 families, repre-senting 459 people.

When we finished serving, the volun-teers shared a light lunch and fellowship. Through prayer again, we were reminded that all things are through God and by Him, to always love our neighbors as ourselves and to be the hands and feet of Christ.

Thank you for all the love and prayers for this ministry.

OMM Volunteers

Mom2Mom is a place for moms of toddlers and young elementary chil-dren to find fellowship and refresh-ment. We are in need of volunteers to help with childcare. The group meets every other Thursday from late August through early May. We need child-care volunteers to help from 9:15-11:15 a.m. You could help once or twice a month or just be a substitute that fills in. A $10 stipend per meeting is available, if desired. Mom2Mom is a thriving and vital ministry for many moms and having childcare is critical to our time together. If you would be interested in helping in any capacity, please contact Tera Moran at [email protected].

Right now an incredible crew of less than 20 total people—across five ser-vices—greet our guests in the lobbies, help them check-in their children and answer questions in Guest Central. They have a passion to make every person feel welcomed and at-home. This area of service is the front-lines of engaging and blessing our community as they join us for worship.

And we’re ready to amp it up!King Street Church is launching a

NEW WAVE of WELCOMING. We want to meet people at our doors to extend Christ’s love in their first moments with us. We will offer welcome centers right in the lobbies, where volunteers will answer questions, hand out gift bags and point people to Guest Central. New brochures and connect cards will share our heart in a visible way and provide ways to plug-in.

This exciting initiative will require about 30 new volunteers. There are

several ways to help and none of them require special training! If you can smile and shake hands, you are officially qualified. Will you be part of the NEW WAVE?

WHY DO WE NEED a “New Wave of Welcoming?”

Statistics show that most visitors make up their mind about a church within the first 10 minutes. While we might be excited about how guests will enjoy the worship service or the message, they have probably already decided whether we are friendly, caring and truly committed to engag-ing and blessing our community with the Gospel. Their decision comes from experiences in the parking lot, the lobbies, at a kid’s check-in station, or while trying to find a seat. Let’s make sure that every experience is great!

What would be asked of me? 1. Come early before your worship

service. 2. Do what you do best— it’s your

choice! You can open doors for people, pass out the bulle-tin, help at a Welcome Center, walk people to Guest Central or another location or help parents check-in their children.

For more information, contact Dixie Cantrell, our Volunteer Coordinator: [email protected], or call her at (717) 496-7913.

Entrusted by Beth Moore Starts Wed., Sept. 7,

7-8:30 p.m., 6 weeks, [M215] facilitated by Pat Marrone

We were never meant to take this journey of faith alone or in secret. God has entrusted us with the great and mighty gift of the gospel, something too precious and life-giving to keep to ourselves.

In this 6-session Bible study, Beth will encourage you to guard what God has entrusted to you, further His kingdom by sharing Christ with others and pour into future generations just as Paul once mentored Timothy. In this journey of joy and hardship, we need each other to stay the course and live lives of faith-fulness.

Breathe by Priscilla Shirer Starts Wed., Sept. 7,

7-8:30 p.m., 5 weeks, [TBD],facilitated by Stephanie White One of the greatest challenges among

women in our culture is taking time to stop and cease from all the activities and busyness and just breathe. We are in bondage to busyness. We constantly strive to complete the limitless to-do lists that hinder us from experiencing all that God has for us. We miss the moments because we rush ahead to the next thing. By neglecting time for tranquility, serenity and repose, we limit our Christlikeness and miss out on some of God’s greatest gifts. It is time for us to breathe and build margin into our lives for God. In the Old Testament, God instituted principles and laws that would transform the Israelites’ mindset. He didn’t just want them

legally free; He wanted them to be able to walk in the freedom and enjoy it. So God gave them many gifts, including boundaries in which to enjoy those gifts. Sabbath was intended as a gift, and it is still a gift to us today. If you are weary, worn out and exhausted, the concept of Sabbath will change your life.

Armor of God by Priscilla ShirerStarts Thurs., Sept. 8 and will meet every other week, 9:30-11 a.m.,[King St. Community Center, C8],

facilitated by Diane Hostetter All day, every day, an invisible war rages

around you. A cunning, devilish enemy seeks to wreak havoc on everything that matters to you –your emotions, your mind, your family, your future.

But his reign stops right here, right now, with you. The enemy always fails miserably when he meets a woman dressed for the occa-sion. A woman who is armed and dangerous.

This Bible study is more than just a biblical description of the believer’s inventory. It is an action plan for putting on your armor and developing a personalized strategy to secure victory against the enemy. This is a six week study on Ephesians 6.

Call Diane Hostetter at 267-0332 to reserve your book for this Bible study.

War Room by Priscilla ShirerStart date TBD, will meet every other Thursday, 6:30–7:30 a.m. [M9], facilitated by Bonnie Johns

“But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, close your door and pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who

sees what is done in secret will reward you” (Matthew 6:6).

War Room Bible Study is based on movie clips by the same title where Tony and Elizabeth Jordan seemingly have it all—great jobs, a beautiful daughter and their dream home—but appearances can be deceiving. In reality, their marriage has become a war zone and their daughter is collateral damage. But with the help of Miss Clara, an older, wiser woman, Elizabeth discovers she can start fighting for her family instead of against them. With her newly energized faith, Elizabeth’s real enemy doesn’t have a prayer.

Benefits include:• Discover the power of prayer within the

context of a small group• Expand participants’ understanding of

spiritual warfare• Develop strategies to battle the real enemy

through prayer• Dig deeper into the spiritual discipline

aspects of prayer• Create opportunity for study among both

inexperienced Bible study students and those well-versed in Scripture

Fear and Faith: Finding the Peace Your Heart Craves by

Trillia Newbell Starts Wed. morning, Sept. 7, 5 weeks, [M19], facilitated by

Carol Hockenberry and Sherry Sellers

Failure, rejection, sickness, losing a loved one, being alone—the fears we carry are many and heavy. Fear can be a tyrant, a bully we can’t hide from. It can paralyze our spirit, damage our relationships and hinder our faith.

When we’re struck with fear, where do we turn? Can God really be trusted?

In five heartfelt sessions the author invites women to explore their fears and how those fears impact their relationships, self-esteem, peace of mind and walk with God. Each session features real-life stories of women who are wrestling with fear due to tragic events, difficult circumstances or deep anxiety about what may or may not happen. Trillia will walk through Scriptures that show God’s love and strength when we are afraid, and His faithfulness in times of trouble. Whatever your fear, you will realize you are not alone, nor are you without hope. You have the One who can calm your fears, grow your faith and give the peace your heart craves.

Perfect Love: Pursuing Intimacy with Christ through the Song of

Solomon by Lisa HarperStarts Wed. morning, Oct. 12, 6 weeks, [M19], facilitated by

Carol Hockenberry and Sherry Sellers

We all want to be known and loved. Though we can experience deep relationships with others, there will always be a hole in our hearts for the perfect love of Christ. But, what does that really mean? How do we pursue intimacy with an invisible God? What if we do not feel worthy of His love? How can we respond when troubles kidnap our security in Christ?

In six powerful sessions, author and Bible teacher Lisa Harper walks women through the Song of Solomon to answer those questions and more. Though romance and marital love are typically associated with this book, Lisa takes a Christ-centered approach to illustrate how this ancient love story is relevant to your life and relationship with Jesus today. You will learn how to embrace God’s perfect love and realize your own beauty and worth in God’s eyes.

MISSIONS NEWS

Excerpts from the Pierces’ E-Postal Newsletter, June 26, 2016(Bernie and Sherry are presently in France to finalize their work there before moving back to the U.S. to become part of the Christar Lincoln Team in Nebraska. Their new assignment begins in August.)

Goodbye, Virginia. We were so glad for the time there. Our only regret was not seeing more

to join the Christar Lincoln team, church planting among least-reached and even unreached/unengaged people groups. Due to lots of paperwork, meetings, company and another ministry trip to NJ, only last night did we get to officially our letter of acceptance.

We will be joining the Lincoln team in August!!!

Joshua, Sherry, Timothy and Bernie Pierce

of our local friends; we forgot how U.S. life can get so busy. Thanks to the help of good friends, we were able to leave our apartment well. Fun times! (Not really, but lots better with gracious help!) We are grateful for our sending church and other dear friends and will miss them.

We had most of a week in Pennsylvania and then this past week in Connecticut. We were able to update one of our partner churches and made some good memories with family. Yesterday, however, we were at a campground when Joshua broke his elbow. It is splinted for now, but we have to get it checked out in France to see if it needs a cast. (It needed more time to swell before they wanted to put a cast on it here.) He is handling it well, but it will make things a bit more challenging for the rest of the summer. Please pray for quick healing. We are thankful he did not hit his head!

Tomorrow morning, Monday, June 27, we leave for France, flying through Atlanta and Amsterdam, arriving Tuesday morning in Lyon. Please pray for all the work that needs to happen this month. We were also told by friends that the place we’ll be sleeping is very noisy most nights. That doesn’t go well for light sleepers. Would you please pray that we will be able to sleep well enough to get the rest we need to get the work done during the day? We have already mentioned that this will be a physically and emotionally challenging trip, so we covet your prayers.

Praise1. Joshua did not hit his head when he rolled

down the rocks2. Safety in travel 3. The help of good friends in leaving our

VA apartment; that we were able to stay in the same place the whole school year

Prayer Requests1. Good rest at night in France2. Keeping time with Jesus a priority 3. Grace, calm, patience and kindness

during all of these transitions4. Safety in all our traveling5. No “kinks” in the moving process from

France6. Special gifts to Christar to cover this move

Excerpts from The Reeck’s Report, July, 2016(Roger and Marilyn are based in Honduras with Wycliffe Bible Translators)

Reminiscing Recently we completed 45 years of marriage,

and in a few weeks we will also complete 45 years of working with Wycliffe Bible Transla-tors. During the 19 years working to complete the Zapotec NT translation, 15 working with the Garifuna whole Bible translation project and the last 10 as trainers/consultants for trans-lation projects and Bible storying projects, we never walked alone. During the last 15 years, the biggest trial has been Roger’s suffering persistent pain after two accidents (one on each foot), surgeries, blood clots and nerve damage.

Africa Roger is now on his way back from Africa—

this time Guinea Bissau. He was there from June 11 to July 6 checking the translation for the Soninke language group. He praises the

The Soninke Translation TeamLord that he was able to accomplish the goals set. He has been mentoring two African men who are consultants in training. During the periods when he was not able to continue due

to pain, they were able to carry on for him. The Lord was with him every minute—he never walked alone!

Venezuela Roger was not able to secure a visa to Vene-

zuela in time for the Luke translation workshop which took place in May. He did the consulting online—for two different language groups. It is such a blessing to work with the Indian trans-lators and guide them to bring about the best translation possible, one that is clear and speaks to the hearts of the speakers of those languages. Unfortunately, there is major turmoil in that country. At the moment there is little food and even fewer resources to buy the food if it were available. Even the local produce has escalated in price. Currently, none of these translation projects receive outside funding.

The Fuenmayors, a Venezuelan couple, are overseeing the projects with missionary con-sultants checking the translations and giving guidance. Recently when the Fuenmayors visited an Indian village, they were saddened to find that the only thing children had to eat were mangos from trees in their yards. Please pray with us for the Indian people working on the Luke translation and OneStory projects. The Indian groups currently involved in these proj-ects are the Puinave (Pweenaveh), Curripaco, Jivi (Heevee), Karina, Dekwana, Bari (Baree), Warao, Yukpa, and Uwutuja (Oowootooha) language groups. We so admire them. Even though their financial situation is desperate, they continue serving the Lord and making it possible for their people to have His Word in their language. They also say, “We never walk alone, God is faithful!”

Would you please consider taking on one of these Venezuelan Indian groups as a special prayer focus? We are also praying that God will provide donors who will give $30, $40 or $50 a month—or a one time gift to help feed the family of one of the Indian translators. If you are interested in helping out, please contact

us ([email protected]) and we will direct you on how to send the money. We would assign one of the translation groups to you and provide pictures and a written description of the language group.

News from the Gerlachs(Bryan and Emily are presently on home as-signment. They are presently in the process of transitioning to their new missions organiza-tion, TEAM, to continue their work in Chiang Mai, Thailand)

On the Road Again...We have been back in the US since mid-May

and it has been a whirlwind! Our time has been jam-packed with family, friends and recon-necting with supporters and churches. If we haven’t connected with you yet, we certainly hope to soon!

We spent the last couple of weeks on the road in Michigan and Indiana visiting Emily’s extended family, friends and churches. We had the pleasure of visiting our previous mentor’s new church plant in Detroit as well as spending time with members of Hillsdale UB Church. We also went to Huntington, IN, to connect with Global Ministries at headquarters and College Park UB Church.

We are still in the process of transitioning to our new missions organization, TEAM, to continue our work in Chiang Mai, Thailand. We have been officially approved by the board! TEAM’s model requires us to have a sending church that is not only supporting us, but involved in crafting our vision for ministry. We are now working on this with King Street Church in Chambersburg, PA.

Since crafting a renewed vision for ministry takes time, we are holding off on going to the required trainings with TEAM until we’re ready. This means we’ll be back in the US longer than we had planned...at least until February 2017. We are anxious to return to our life and work

in Thailand, but we know that God has a plan for this extra time that we’ll be in the US.

We would like to apologize if there has been any confusion about our transition to TEAM and why we are choosing to partner with this new sending organization. Our heart is to continue to partner with the local church that we’ve made such a great connection with in Chiang Mai, at least for this season in our

Emily, Bryan and Jameson Gerlachministry. We feel strongly that God has called us to this for now. We feel excited about working with local churches, making disciples, and maybe even church planting in the future. We’re really excited to work alongside other TEAM missionaries in Chiang Mai and to have access to more training resources through TEAM. We feel that this will better equip us to do what we are called to do.

We will still be Endorsed Staff with Global Ministries, which means that we are still a part of the larger United Brethren team.

Ministry in Thailand continues... The Cool Shade of Life Church contin-

ues to do the work of making disciples in our absence. Since we left Thailand in May, we have received news that work has begun on a

Page 23: P. 5 New Partners P. MESSENGER · 2016. 8. 15. · Judson for his evangelistic efforts. Following eighteen months in prison, he was put on a ship, nearly unrecognizable, bound for

23

new “worship center.” This is probably different than what you’re picturing...but extraordinary nonetheless! Our pastor’s in-laws have started using materials they have gathered to construct a large gazebo on their property that will be used for worship and prayer meetings. The hope is that this would grow into a cell group and eventually a new body of believers in that neighborhood.

We are also very excited to hear news about a couple in our church that we previously wrote about (Buu and Jaa). They have been studying the Word diligently every week with our assis-tant pastor, and are now ready to begin a class on baptism...they will soon be baptised!

Jameson Gerlach with Ally and Samuel BushreSupporting us...

A big part of our Home Assignment is maintaining and raising support so that we can continue doing ministry. Our hope is that those of you who have been supporting us financially will continue to do so.

We do not yet have an account established with our new organization (TEAM), so we ask that you continue giving to Global Ministries. Global Ministries will continue accepting funds for us through the end of August. We will give you more information about switching your

support over to TEAM at that point.Thank you for understanding and bearing

with us in this transition! Prayer & Praise

• Praise God for safe travels so far as we connect with family and churches.

• Praise God for the willingness King Street Church has shown to work with us to become our sending church with TEAM.

• Pray for endurance and safety as we con-tinue to travel.

• Pray for God’s guidance as we seek vision and craft ministry plans for our second term.

• Pray for the Thai church, specifically Cool Shade of Life and the leadership. They are on our hearts while we’re away!

About TEAM Global Missions“It’s simple, really. We help churches

everywhere send missionaries everywhere.TEAM – The Evangelical Alliance Mission
