Michael Young, President

Muskoka is a great place to live perhaps one of the best in the world, though returning from a vacation in a warm part of this globe (+30C) to the chill of winter (-10C or colder) can be a bit of a shock to the system. Nevertheless having winter reduces the number of harmful bacteria, viruses and other plant and animal parasites that make this country home. Perhaps March is one of the months that discourages them. It may not be as cold as February (on average) but it can have some pretty wild weather, which is perhaps where the saying ‘In like a Lion, out like a Lamb’ or vice-versa comes from. The name of March comes from Martius, the first month of the earliest Roman calendar. It was named after Mars, the Roman god of war (perhaps where ‘like a lion’ came from), who was considered an ancestor of the Roman people through his sons Romulus and Remus. Martius remained the first month of the Roman calendar year perhaps as late as 153 BC.

March is the first month of spring in the Northern Hemisphere (North America, Europe, Asia and part of Africa) and the first month of fall or autumn in the Southern Hemisphere (South America, part of Africa, and Oceania).

Our February Guest Speaker

Kelly Hammond

Looking Ahead to our March General Meeting:

Our Speakers will be from the Huntsville Algonquin Healthcare (Hospitals)

Natalie Bubela, Chief Executive Officer

Harold Featherston, Chief Executive Diagnostic, Ambulatory and Planning

Kelly has spent many years volunteering and fundraising for different organizations and charities both locally and globally. Most notably, her contributions to our local Habitat for Humanity and the national Dreams Take Flight, in the amount of $12,000 each through her fundraising efforts with Dream Mountains Foundation. Her successful summit of Kilimanjaro in 2011 and most recently, her redirected 2015 trek to Everest Base Camp, have been publicized throughout the area and she continues to volunteer and contribute to her world as a proud member of the Rotary Club of Huntsville.

Her lifelong dream of trekking to Everest Base Camp was cut short with the catastrophic Nepal earthquake that not only injured Kelly, but claimed the lives of almost 9,000, injured over 20,000 Nepali and left hundreds of thousands homeless. The earthquake redirected her trip and although she didn’t make it to Everest, she found love and light among the

ruins of Kathmandu, causing a transformation in her life as well.

She now owns and operates a health coaching business in Huntsville, encouraging others to find love and light in every day, to stay positive and move forward regardless of the twists in their paths on this amazing journey through life.

Please join Kelly as she shares a video of her Nepal adventure and chats a little about how that changed her path and where she is heading next.

MEMBERSHIP

Our Club is starting its sixth year and continues to enjoy tremendous success. Our

membership is presently at its limit of 175. However, requests for membership will still be

received and names placed on our Waiting List. In the course of the year, it is likely that

space for new members will become available due to members’ changing

circumstances such as a move away from the area. When this happens, the ‘next in line’

on the Waiting list will be contacted. For further details, click on the Membership tab at

the top of the Home Page.

Please remember to wear your name badge at Probus events, especially at the monthly

meetings. This makes greeting other members easy. New members have a green dot on

their badge and Management Team members have a coloured star so they are easy to

identify.

MEMBER CARE

There are no updates to report under Member Care this month.

Be sure to contact me at [email protected] when you hear of any member who

should receive a Get Well or Thinking of You card, or the family of a member who should

receive a Sympathy card, as I would like to acknowledge this by sending a card on our

Club’s behalf. Many of you have let me know in the past, and I thank you for that.

Huntsville Lakes Probus Club makes an annual donation to Hospice Huntsville and the

Huntsville Hospital Auxiliary in memory of members’ loved one who passed during the

calendar year.

events are back up and running! Click on the blue high-lighted links to view.

Bowling Group outing at Huntsville Bowl.

Grand Gourmet with a theme of ‘Comfort Food’.

Travel Group talk on Travels in Eastern Australia.

Cross Country Skiing at Arrowhead Provincial Park.

Investment Group talking about Current Events affecting the markets.

Lunch Bunch at Moose Delaney’s.

Creative Cuisine 19: Two hosts with a ‘Mardi Gras’ theme.

January Book Clubs: ‘The Only Child’, ‘The Glass Castle A Memoir’, and ‘A Man Called Ove’.

January Wine Tasting: Two groups meeting to taste French and New Zealand wines.

Movie Group at the Huntsville Movie Theatre: The movie was ‘Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story’.

Social Committee Events

Robbie Burns Dinner and Celebration … ‘Eat Haggis and Ceildh ON’. The HLPC Management

Social Committee planned the January Social Event at the Huntsville Legion. The Huntsville

Legion being such gracious hosts, provided a tasty dinner with ‘neeps and taddies’, a meat pie

and a sampling of Haggis. The show was staged by the Huntsville ‘Cameron of Lochiel’ pipe

band that includes two of our Probus members, Grant Peddie and Don Steele. These

accomplished pipers in their tartan kilts, piped songs as ‘Amazing Grace’ and ‘Auld Lang Syne’

as well as other toe-tapping marches. The ‘Address to the Haggis’ was entertainingly animated

and not really ‘grew-some’ at all !

Community Events

2018 Ontario Men’s Provincial Curling Championship held at the Summit Centre January 31st to

February 4th.

Other Events

HLPC January General Meeting. Thanks to Susan Burger for presiding over the first meeting of the

year. It was a busy one with the introduction of the 2018 HLPC Management Team, bagpipe

piping by our awesome Grant Peddie, Dave Freel’s address on the Celebration of Robbie Burns

and all that’s tartan, Introduction and Invitation to the Tankard (13 HLPC members were Tankard

volunteers!), and Tony Sutey for a very informative talk on Financial Planning.

MAKE IT HAPPEN !!
