humanitarian vacation that builds in the warm satisfaction of helping others, by checking out the book, “The 100 Best Volunteer Vacations.” The important play by Anna Deveare Smith, Twilight, with a Long Beach connection, is remembered as part of the 20 year anniversary of the LA riots. Meet the eleven young men of LBCAP who traveled to the White House, inspired to make a change in their community through advocacy. Also featured is Isabelle Allende’s Zorro, set in 19th century California, a lyrical retelling of tales of the great masked man we all know so well. Long Beach has a lot to offer in the next two months from the arts, music and festivals this season brings. What a great town to live in!

As the old saying goes, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. With Center Space, the newest project from the Catalyst Network of Communities, residents of West Long Beach now have access to healthy foods and fitness activities. West Long Beach currently does not have a grocery store or the kind of community activity that attracts large crowds on a regular basis.

On Saturday, April 21, the grand opening kick-off at Admiral Kidd Park, 2125 Santa Fe Avenue, marked the beginning of weekly activities. Residents are encouraged to bring their families and friends every Saturday morning to shop for fresh fruits and vegetables, participate in exercise activities, and sign up for workshops or volunteer projects.

The Kick-off event on April 21st featured the new certified farmers market, hot food vendors, gourmet food trucks (Buttermilk, The Lime Truck, and Grill ‘Em All), St. Mary’s Mobile Medical Clinic, Cabrillo High School Steel Drum Band, Jordan High School Latino

Dance Ensemble, live DJ music, musicians, performances, dancers, Zumba and Yoga demonstrations, Long Beach Free Store, guest speakers, kids’ activities, and information booths with community organizations.

Union Bank, a Center Space sponsor, also announced the opening of the first full service ATM in West Long Beach located at the West Division Police Station, 1835 Santa Fe Avenue, Long Beach. Other Center Space sponsors include The California Endowment’s Building Healthy Communities: Long Beach, Long Beach Community Foundation, Long Beach Parks and Recreation, Let’s Move LB, and Long Beach City Councilman James Johnson.

Center Space is a project of the Catalyst Network of Communities. Collaborating partners on the organizing team include Long Beach Time Exchange, T’s Space, Leap Frog Yoga, The Narra Project, Team Zumba USA, Shift Long Beach, and the Greener Good Farmers Market. P

LA’s Greek Film Festival is pleased to announce that A Green Story will be the festival’s opening night film. A Green

Story chronicles the life of Van Vlahakis, a Greek immigrant who arrived in America with only $22 in his pocket and eventually founded the multi-million dollar green company, Earth Friendly Products. The world premiere of A Green Story will take place on May 31st at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater and the festival will run through June 3rd.

A Green Story stars Ed O’Ross, Shannon Elizabeth, Annabella Sciorra, George Finn, Malcolm McDowell, Billy Zane, Louis Mandylor, Debbie Matenopoulos and Alessandra Toressani. The movie, written and directed by Nika Agiashvili, was filmed in Los Angeles, Chicago and on location in Greece.

El Festival anual del Cine Griego de Los Angeles se complace en anunciar la película A Green Story (Una historia verde), con ésta harán la esperada apertura en la noche del festival. A

Green Story narra la vida de Van Vlahakis, un inmigrante griego que llegó a América con sólo 22 dólares en el bolsillo quien finalmente, fundó una compañía multimillonaria “verde,” de productos ambientalistas. El estreno mundial de esta gran historia se llevará a cabo el 31 de mayo en el Teatro Egipcio de Hollywood y el festival se extenderá hasta el 3 de junio.

A Green Story es protagonizada por los actores : Ed O’Ross, Shannon Elizabeth, Annabella Sciorra, George Finn, Malcolm McDowell, Billy Zane, Louis Mandylor, Debbie Matenopoulos y Alessandra Toressani. Art Theatre—One of Igor Stravinsky’s most loved works, The Soldier’s Tale, tells a story of wealth, love, lost innocence and the Devil, narrated by actor Steve Stapenhorst and accompanied by a pit band comprised of Long Beach Symphony Orchestra principal players. Written in 1918 and rarely heard in its entirety, this dramatic piece finds a perfect venue in the beautifully restored Art Theatre of Long Beach.

The LBSO Chamber Players will take us on an oceanic voyage with a vivid collection of images: the screech of the seagull, the splash of primeval ocean waves and the cantabile whisper of the mighty whale itself. Also on the program is Saint-Saëns’ beloved “Carnival of the Animals” and humorous poems of Ogden Nash.

A new exhibition of Princess Diana memorabilia that will include hundreds of items from the British royal family is scheduled to open this summer on the Queen

Mary in Long Beach. Organizers for the Queen Mary and Pink Ribbons Crusade, a nonprofit advocate for breast cancer awareness and prevention, have teamed up to put the gallery together.

The multimillion-dollar collection, titled “Diana: Legacy of a Princess,” will make its debut June 16th in a newly designed 9,000-square-foot gallery aboard the ship and will feature an elegant room that will display nine dresses or gowns worn by Diana, as well as designer sketches and items from her wedding.

Steve Sheldon, director of entertainment events for the Queen Mary, said the large collection is the first of its kind. “No venue has had the opportunity to display the exhibition” in its entirety, Sheldon said.

The gallery will also provide an in-depth look at those who have visited or sailed on the Queen Mary. They include King George V and Queen Mary, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, the Queen Mother and Queen Elizabeth.

A tea room and a gift boutique will also be added to complement the gallery. P

The L.A. Opera is presenting “La Boheme” by Gia-como Puccini at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion May 12, 20, 23, 26, 31 & June 2nd. The world’s

most beloved opera, set in 19th century Paris, tells the story of four young artists live in poverty together in a garret. One of them, Rodolfo (Tenor Stephen Costello), falls in love with his neighbor Mimi (Mexican/Ameri-can soprano Ailyn Perez, married to Stephen Costello), a fragile seamstress. Another, Marcello, is engaged in a tumultuous on-again off-again relationship with Musetta (African/American soprano Janai Brugger), who has been seeing wealthier men. Despite their poverty, the young people try to live their lives to the fullest. When Rodolfo realizes that Mimi is slowly dying of tuberculosis, he breaks off the relationship so that she can find someone truly able to take care of her. When she does so, he realizes that his life is now empty. The two pairs of lovers are tragi-cally reunited when Musetta finds Mimi gravely ill, and brings her to the garret for one last reunion with Rodolfo before her death.

Long Beach launched its eleventh citywide reading project, Long Beach Reads One Book. Isabel Allende’s

The State of California, under Governor Brown, is on the verge of cutting funding to public preschool programs across the State. This would mean that many Long Beach preschool

programs could be forced to stop providing early education services to the City’s low income and most vulnerable families and children.

Under Governor Brown’s proposal, educational title 5 programs, which include all public full day preschools, some of the half-day preschools, and all infant/toddler and school age center based programs, would close. These programs have been proven to provide low income children with much needed high quality educational opportunities to help them succeed in school and beyond. Children in low income communities where these programs are located are meeting educational standards that allow them to start school ahead, rather than 18 months behind, as they would if the programs were not available.

His plan cuts the alternative payment (voucher) programs, which are critical for working parents who have stayed off welfare, not just families seeking to leave welfare. The Governor is also seeking to lower the eligibility ceiling, which eliminates children that are currently receiving educational opportunities in programs out of

classrooms. In addition, the Governor’s proposal reduces child care for parents in job training to only 12 months and eliminates funding for preschool programs.

The Governor’s education proposal dismantles many years of progressive educational achievements. Parents, community members, businesses and community organizations must stand together and push back so that the State’s budget is not balanced on the backs of our State’s most vulnerable, low income families and children. More importantly, make your voice heard and vote for increased educational spending this year. P

The Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD), with its transitional kindergarten program, is a statewide leader in preparing children for future academic success with the

gift of time. For five years, LBUSD has run successful transitional kindergarten programs and has been hard at work to fully implement transitional kindergarten in the fall.

Transitional kindergarten, a developmentally-appropriate grade, was created by a new California law that requires children to be five years old by the time they enter kindergarten. Transitional kindergarten looks more like what kindergarten used to look like twenty years ago. The puppet theaters and kitchenettes are back, and kids will be able to build on this strong foundation when they enter kindergarten. This “smart start” will not only give them time to develop motor skills and cognitive skills, but also teach them important lessons in communication, sharing, listening and following directions. When fully implemented, 125,000 children across the state could get a well-rounded boost from transitional kindergarten.

In addition to our children, the parent, teachers, schools and economy will see great benefits in transitional kindergarten. Parents will have an option within the public education system to ensure their children enter kindergarten with the maturity and skills they need to excel; teachers will remain employed; schools will benefit as

children will be better prepared to learn and less likely to be placed in special education and retained in later grades; and California’s economy will be bolstered by a well-educated workforce. P

Isn’t that a problem only on the East Coast? Actually, although children’s blood-lead values continue to drop in recent years, we still have children in Long Beach who are lead poisoned. Most

cases involve young children who have ingested lead based paint or dust from their home because of their hand-to-mouth behaviors.

In 1978, the Federal government banned the use of lead in paint. However, 86 percent of the housing in the City of Long Beach is older than 1978. The older a structure is, the higher the probability of lead based-paint being in the home. The probability of lead based paint in pre-1940 homes is 98 percent because it was used more extensively at that time. If your children live in a house or apartment built before 1978 and the paint is peeling and chipping, it is very important to have your children tested for lead.

Lead poisoning is extremely harmful, especially to young children. Low levels of lead exposure can have serious life-long effects on a child’s growth, ability to learn, and behavior, including loss of IQ points and hyperactivity. The only way to know whether a child has lead in their body is a blood lead test.

Other sources of lead in our environment pose a risk. Some imported pottery, especially from Mexico and China, may contain enough lead to cause severe lead poisoning. Some parents’ work

environments involve exposure to lead, which not only poses a threat to these adults for lead poisoning, but also can expose their children through “take-home” exposure. This happens when the adult comes home from work wearing their work clothing and/or shoes. The lead on their clothing/shoes can then be transferred to the home surfaces or directly to the children by a hug and the hand-to-mouth behavior of small children.

If you plan to remodel or renovate your home, you should know that removal of old paint can be very hazardous. Unsuspecting parents may become involved in do-it-yourself home remodeling/renovation without realizing the dangers. If you live in a home built before 1978 and plan to remodel/renovate, you should first consult with a contractor certified in lead-based paint abatement.

Parents can help prevent childhood lead poisoning by washing children’s hands with soap and water before every meal and keeping the home and children’s toys free of dust and dirt. Blood lead testing is recommended for children under age 6. Ask your child’s doctor if your child has been tested.

The Salvation Army’s Long Beach Citadel Corps, located at 455 E. Spring Street, has been meeting people

at their point of need without discrimination since 1906 by providing basic human services and referrals. The year round food pantry distributed 7,477 grocery orders in 2011. This represents a significant increase in individuals/families in need of food assistance over the last 5 years; in 2007, TSA LB distributed only 1,165 grocery orders.

The pantry is open Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 9 A.M. to 12 p.m.;

the requirements are minimal: picture ID for applicant, proof of residency in our service area, and proof of income. Grocery orders consisting of canned and non-perishable food items along with fresh produce, dairy, meat and baked goods as available are distributed to families and special Hobo Bags are prepared for our homeless clients that contain single serving no-cook items, hygiene items are also available for homeless upon request.

The Salvation Army has been able to meet and keep up with the increasing need in Greater Long Beach because of the

continuing support it receives from the community in both monetary gifts and gift in kind donations. TSA LB is grateful for past support and gives thanks for this generous community.

However, the pantry is almost empty. The Salvation Army uses about 85 cents of every dollar raised to support the services it provides. Businesses, community groups, churches, and individuals are encouraged to dig a little deeper. Please help to keep the pantry shelves stocked! P

If asked, most couples would say it’s important to protect the financial future of their families in the event of a spouse’s unexpected death.

Yet 74 percent of couples rarely or never discuss the topic of life insurance as part of their financial planning strategy, according to a 2010 State Farm® Life Insurance Study. A 2011 study from finance research firm LIMRA revealed that 41 percent of U.S. adults don’t even have life insurance.

What are your memories of April 29, 1992? P

Twenty years later, one of the best dramatizations of the impact of the LA riots remains Anna Deavere Smith’s powerful Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992, a one

woman play. The original Broadway production opened at the Cort Theater in New York City on April 17, 1994, and was nominated for the 1994 Tony Award for Best Play. Smith recreated her role in a film version by PBS Productions in 2000.

Twilight consists of a series of monologues, the words of actual people interpreted by Smith in her dual role as playwright/performer. The monologues are edited reflections made up from interviews that Smith conducted in the aftermath of the events that seriously divided the Los Angeles community in the wake of the Rodney G. King beating on the night of March 3, 1991.

On April 29, 1992, at 3:15 pm, a Simi Valley jury of ten whites, one Hispanic, and one Filipino-American acquitted three of the LAPD officers charged in the King beating and was unable to reach a verdict on the fourth. About 5:00 P. M., rioting began in Los Angeles. When it was over, 53 people were dead, over 7,000 were arrested, and more than $1 billion in property damage was sustained.

Smith highlights the issues for her audiences and readers of her play by structuring the story as a “Time Line” or a chronological outline of the important events referenced by the various voices in the play.

One Long Beach resident, Lydia Ramos, whose story was featured in

Twilight, talked about her experiences that day. “Twenty years ago on April 29, 2012, my young reporter self [working for the Los Angeles Times] volunteered to cover the post-Rodney King verdict events in South Central LA. I found myself running for my life after being accosted with a gun pointed to my forehead. I could have died that night but I

Eleven young men of color from Compton, Long Beach, and surrounding areas were invited to

The White House in a once in a lifetime trip February 20th-23rd, and shared their experience in a special event April 19th at The Long Beach Playhouse, where they celebrated their trip in music, story, and song.

The local young men ranged in age from 15-22 years and are skilled in digital media or singers and musicians who participate in the Long Beach Community Action Partnership (LBCAP) “Men Making A Change” program. After performing as the opening act for the James Brown Exhibit at The GRAMMY Museum in L.A. Live, they were invited by Robert Santelli, Executive Director of The GRAMMY Museum, to participate in the Washington, D.C. educational trip.

Simpson, relentless and successful advocate for lifting citizens out of poverty to self-sufficiency, was recently awarded $100,000 from the California Endowment to continue his non-profit’s work to increase leadership among young men of color ages 14-22. Simpson, who accompanied the local group to Washington, said, “Seeing these young men make the trip from Long Beach to The White House was unbelievable considering the obstacles they have encountered in their lives. Now they know it is absolutely possible that good things happen and they can make a change for the better.”

First Lady Michelle Obama hosted “At the Crossroads: A History of the Blues in America,” an educational workshop for middle and high school students from across the country, held in the State Dining Room. Maeve Milstead, Director of Youth Programs, LBCAP, said, “Hearing First Lady

Michelle Obama share that her husband made mistakes early in his life but regained focus, resonated with our young men.”

“This trip has impacted our young men in ways we couldn’t imagine,” said Milstead. “On our final evening of the trip, our toughest young man broke down in tears about how this experience has changed his life forever.” She and Simpson have seen their difficulties first hand. Many of these young men, their families, or loved ones have been subject to violent shootings, stabbings, beatings or worse.

Just when the young men thought they were returning to Long Beach, they were surprised with a stop in New York City, where they were able to visit Times Square and given a motivational speech by New York’s top urban morning show, The Breakfast Club. P
