LOS PADRES y los estudiantes en Long Beach tienen la suerte de tener una rica variedad de recursos musicales disponibles que permiten a los niños a aprender sobre la música orquestal y, tal vez, aprender a tocar instrumentos. La investigación ha demostrado que una educación musical puede mejorar la experiencia de aprendizaje de los estudiantes en otras áreas.

En enero, la Orquesta Sinfónica de Long Beach llevo a cabo cuatro conciertos para más de 10.000 estudiantes de cuarto y quinto grado de la Long Beach Unified School District y partes de Wilmington. El Proyecto Harmony ha dado a niños en riesgo de las zonas marginadas de la ciudad durante todo el año clases y la participación de grupo con la esperanza de que la exposición a la música crea un lenguaje de paz que se puede hablar entre las comunidades y las personas diversas. LONG BEACH parents and students are lucky to have a rich variety of musical resources available that allow children to learn about orchestral music and, perhaps, learn to play instruments. Research has shown that a music education can enhance students’ learning experiences in other areas.

In January, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra performed four concerts for more than 10,000 fourth and fifth grade students from the Long Beach Unified School District and parts of Wilmington. The live orchestra concerts were performed by world-class musicians, and LBSO Music Director Enrique Arturo Diemecke provided educational and entertaining commentary for the students in both Spanish and English. This is the 34th year of Symphony Concerts for Young People, and the 27th anniversary of it being part of the LBUSD Curriculum-Based Programming.

Established in 1935, the Long Beach Symphony Orchestra launched its 77th season in October 2011. Each year the LBSO performs six Classics concerts in the Terrace Theater, four Orchestra POPS! events in the Long Beach Arena and two Holiday Celebration concerts in the Terrace Theater. The Orchestra works with the Long Beach Unified School District to provide sequential, curriculum-based music education opportunities throughout the year. Through its comprehensive music education programs—including professional ensembles in elementary and middle schools and Symphony Concerts for Young People—the LBSO reaches more than 25,000 students a year.

Another music education program across town, Harmony Project and Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles – called YOLA for short

– offers instruction as often as four days a week to some 500 underprivileged kids (most of them Latino or African American) in underserved areas of the city. Children who want to learn to play classical music usually have to pay a lot of money for lessons and instruments; YOLA provides both for free.

The YOLA program was inspired by a Venezuelan music education system known as El Sistema, which has taught classical music to hundreds of thousands of underprivileged children in Venezuela for more than three decades. El Sistema’s most famous product is L.A. Philharmonic Director Gustavo Dudamel. When he took over the orchestra in 2009, Dudamel began to replicate El Sistema and persuaded the L.A. Philharmonic to invest in YOLA and the Harmony Project.

The Harmony Project has given at-risk children from underserved areas of the city year-round lessons and ensemble participation in hopes that the exposure to music creates a peaceful language that can be spoken amongst communities and people and various backgrounds. The program began approximately 10 years ago with 36 students and now incorporates more than 800 musicians performing in nine orchestras throughout the city, including four of Los Angeles’ highest crime areas. These orchestras include the Hip Hop Orchestra, a Jazz Band, the New Designs Music Academy and the Contemporary Flute Ensemble.

Music education programs such as the LBSO/LBUSD Curriculum-Based Programming and the Harmony Project understand that when children learn to interact with others in an ensemble, it will be heard in the music but also felt in families, classrooms, neighborhoods, work environments and communities. P

MISTY Copeland is only the third black soloist with the prestigious American Ballet Theatre in New

York and the first in two decades. Her goal is to become the first black principal dancer for a major U.S. ballet company. Soloists rank just below principals in ballet.

Copeland has been wowing observers since she wandered into a weekly ballet class at the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club. Although a late starter when she took up ballet at the age of 13, Copeland’s rise was meteoric. One of four children living with her single mother in a residential motel, the Boys and Girls Club was her refuge. By the time she was 18, Copeland was part of the American Ballet

Theatre, one of the foremost dance theatres in the country.

Her goal is to give young blacks “someone they can relate to, someone who looks like them ... I want them to see themselves in me,” Copeland said. “I didn’t grow up in a classical world. I want them to know it’s possible.”

Copeland recently made an appearance sponsored by Long Beach’s MusicUntold as a Black History Month event. In addition to teaching a class at Cal State Long Beach, Copeland met with students at San Pedro High School, Long Beach Poly High and the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club.

The Long Beach Playhouse recently presented the play Boom, with its striking, graphic and playful content. The play takes place in a basement lab starting with a ‘boom’

that sets the mood for what’s to come. Marine biologist Jules discovered through observing fish

sleeping patterns that a massive comet is about to strike earth, wiping out humanity. Trying to save the human race, he places an ad for “random” sex in his indestructible place, in hopes of being able to repopulate the world after the comet.

Jo, a journalism student, is the only person who contacts Jules. But Jules is gay, and their failed “casual sexual encounter”

is interrupted by the catastrophe. Jo finds herself trapped with a stranger whom she cannot stand. The meaningless sex becomes crucial, and where these two characters met in space and time turns out to be for a purpose. The humorous play also includes “Barbara,” who interrupts the play and captures the audience with her personal stories, making the audience eager to know what’s next.

“don’t let life go without doing something good,” is the moral of the play. everything happens for a reason; even the most random moment can define the future. P

Long Beach’s most recent public/private partnership, the conversion of the former Palace Hotel into housing for youth that are exiting foster care, opened its doors at a public

ceremony on February 23rd.United Friends of the Children, a non-profit group with a similar

effort in Whittier, was brought in as the managing entity that will oversee case management at the Palace Hotel. At age 18, all foster youth are cut off from services and are in particular need of support to become independent and productive citizens. This site will house an organized and supervised program that will instill life-skills and accountability and ultimately yield life success.

The agreement between Long Beach Housing and LINC Housing to convert the former Palace Hotel into a foster youth transitional house was approved in a unanimous vote by the City Council in June 2009. The building underwent a complete overhaul and restoration and incorporates many green building components and state-of-the-art amenities for its future residents.

Located at 2640 Anaheim Street in the Central Long Beach Project Area, the Palace Hotel had long been a source of blight and crime for the surrounding neighborhood. The property, acquired by the City through a tax default in 2005, has now become a beacon of creative reuse. P

people in the United States will be Latino. With such growing clout, all Latinos, including those who are able to vote for the first time in this election, are encouraged to register to vote. In order to qualify as a registered voter in Los Angeles County or anywhere in California, you must be: a citizen of the United States; a resident of California; and 18 years of age or older as of the day of the next election. You cannot vote if you are in prison or on parole for conviction of a felony.

You have your choice of registration methods. Stop by your local DMV office to fill out and submit a voter registration form. You may do this when you apply for a driver’s license or at any other time. Fill out a voter registration form online in Spanish. The information will be entered on a paper form and sent to you for your signature, which you must then return by mail. You must re-register each time you move and you must register to vote if you have never registered before. Also, you must be registered at least 15 days before the election in which you intend to vote. If you do not live in Los Angeles County, please contact the County Registrar of Voters in the county that you reside.

The Long Beach City Prosecutor’s Office announced it has filed criminal charges against two women who lied to

police officers and the public about finding a newborn baby at a gas station. The infant, it was later learned, was the child of one of the women.

One woman was charged with child endangerment and child abandonment for abandoning her child and fabricating the story that she found the baby in a plastic bag outside a gas station. That woman’s mother was charged with filing a false police report and obstructing police officers in their investigation. If the women are found guilty of the charges, they each face up to two years in County Jail.

No charges would have been filed if the mother had taken advantage of California’s “Safe Surrender” law, which provides immunity to a parent who surrenders the infant at a hospital or fire station within 72 hours of birth, with no questions asked.

The infant is reported in stable condition and recovering at a local hospital. “By now, everyone should know about Safe Surrender,” said City Prosecutor Doug Haubert. “There is just no reason something like this should happen.” P

At the end of February, an 11 year-old girl died after a preplanned fight with another girl, also 11, in an alley near Willard

Elementary School, police said. After the off-campus fight, both girls then walked away. A few hours later, family members noticed one of the girls wasn’t feeling well and drove her to a local emergency room. She underwent surgery, but was pronounced dead shortly before 9 p.m. the same day.

Friends said the fight was over a boy. Police said they were working to interview anyone with information, knowing that there were rumors going around about the girls and what caused the fight. The Los Angeles County Coroner will determine the exact cause of death.

A few days later, a 17 year-old Ohio boy shot and killed 3 of his classmates, wounding two others. And school violence continues… P

If asked, most couples would say it’s important to protect the financial future of their families in the event of a spouse’s unexpected death.

Yet 74 percent of couples rarely or never discuss the topic of life insurance as part of their financial planning strategy, according to a 2010 State Farm® Life Insurance Study. A 2011 study from finance research firm LIMRA revealed that 41 percent of U.S. adults don’t even have life insurance.

My wife was an alcoholic. She drank herself to death.I remember the first time she disappeared. It was several months after our marriage. I came home

from work and saw she was gone, no note. I called every hospital and the police, to report her missing. I took time off from work. Finally after four days, she called.

After her first disappearance, she would disappear every year or so. I knew that, after a few days, she would call to ask forgiveness and to come back home. I always took her back.

I remember how she was in denial about her alcohol addiction, and she would not drink in front of me. I remember how ignorant of alcoholism I was and perhaps how my ignorance contributed to my own denial.

Slowly her skin became yellow with jaundice because of cirrhosis of the liver. When her liver began to fail, she needed water she was retaining removed and blood transfusions just to stay alive. I remember watching first the murky water she was retaining flowing out and then the fresh blood flowing in. I had to turn away in shock.

I remember the evening before she died at Long Beach Memorial. It was the middle of December 2001, and she had already been hospitalized

more than 2 months. Early that evening, a nurse called to say, “Mr. Saks, you better come. I don’t think your wife will make it through the night.”

I went straight to the hospital. She did not acknowledge me. She just lay on her back moving her head back and forth. I sat down and stayed the night.

Evening turned to morning. I decided to go home to eat and get some sleep. After eating, I got another phone call. The nurse said my wife had just died and if I wanted to see her one last time, I could.

I went back to the hospital room, went to her, kissed her cold cheek, and said, “Good-bye, my love.” I walked out in tears without turning back.

In healing, I learned that beauty is all around us, in the symmetry of flowers, plants, animals, and people we observe daily. It is in the bright colors we see, the melodic sounds we hear, the fragrances we love and the softness of things we touch. However, without the asymmetry all around us, the dullness in the colors, the dissonant sounds, the odors that repel, and the roughness of life, we cannot find beauty. Without ugliness, beauty cannot exist. So we need it all—the good and bad, the beautiful and the ugly, and of course, the pain and pleasure in our lives. P

Beatriz “Betty” Gonzalez is a high school senior from Long Beach, who wants to make a positive impact on people. The Army is going to be a part

of helping her to achieve her goals of helping people and making a difference in her community.

The oldest of two children, originally from Tacambaro Michoacan, Mexico, Betty often takes care of her two year old brother so that her parents can work. Her mom is a housekeeper/nanny and dad is a handyman. An active member of her church youth group for several years now, Betty has developed leadership skills and a clear sense of direction for herself. She played volleyball and ran track at Lakewood High School, and Betty works with children with special needs in a program called “Best Buddies” at her High School. She would eventually like to work as a therapist or counselor.

After all of the excitement of her graduation from Lakewood, Betty leaves on July 16th for basic training in Fort Jackson, South Carolina. When she completes her initial enlistment term, Betty is looking forward being the first female in her family to attend college with the help of one of the many financial assistance programs the Army offers. Add garlic and beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until no longer pink, 3 to 4 minutes. stir in the raisins, ketchup, cinnamon, ½ teaspoon salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper, olives and chopped hardboiled egg. 3. divide the beef mixture among the pastry disks, brush the edges with water, fold in half, and press with a fork to seal. 4. transfer to a baking sheet and brush with the egg. bake until golden, 20 to 25 minutes.

The IRS does not discuss tax account information, such as refunds, with taxpayers via e-mail or use e-mail to solicit

sensitive financial and personal information from taxpayers, nor does it request financial account security information, such as passwords and PIN numbers, from taxpayers.

The most common IRS-impersonation scam is a bogus e-mail claiming to come from the IRS that tells the consumer that he or she is eligible to receive a tax refund for a specified amount. It may use the phrase “last annual calculations of your fiscal activity” and an attached form requiring entry of personal/financial information. Several variations have claimed to come from the Exempt Organizations area of the IRS or the name and signature of a genuine or made-up IRS executive.

“Advance fee” scam e-mails appear to come from the US Treasury Department to notify recipients that they’ll receive millions of dollars in recovered funds, lottery winnings, or cash consignment if they provide certain personal information. Alternatively, they may be sent a phony check and told to deposit it plus 10% in taxes or fees. The US Treasury Department does not become involved in notification of inheritances or lottery or other winnings.

Another scam, fax-based, generally targets

foreign nationals and is based on a genuine IRS form, the W-8BEN, Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding. The scammer modifies the form to request passport numbers, information used for account security purposes (such as mother’s maiden name), and similar detailed personal and financial information, and states that the recipient may have to pay additional tax if he or she fails to immediately fax back the completed form. In reality, the real W-8BEN is completed by banks, not individuals.

Other IRS-impersonation scams vary, but may claim that the recipient will be paid for participating in an online survey or is under investigation or audit. Some scam e-mails have referenced recovery-related tax provisions, such as Making Work Pay, or solicited charitable donations to victims of natural disasters. Taxpayers should not click on a link or open an attachment to these scam e-mails, since it can download viruses onto the recipient’s computer.To detect scams, there are signs to watch for, such as an e-mail that:• requests detailed or an unusual amount of

personal and/or financial information;• uses bait to get the recipient to respond to

the e-mail, such as mentioning a tax refund

or offering to pay the recipient to participate in an IRS survey;

• threatens a consequence for not responding to the e-mail, such as additional taxes or blocking access to the recipient’s funds;

• gets the IRS or other federal agency names wrong;

• uses bad grammar or odd phrasing (many of the e-mail scams originate overseas and are written by non-native English speakers); or

• uses a really long address in any link contained in the e-mail message or one that does not start with the actual IRS Web site address.

Taxpayers who receive a suspicious e-mail claiming to come from the IRS should take the following steps:• don’t open any attachments to the e-mail,

in case they contain viruses that will infect your computer;

• don’t click on any links, for the same reason; • forward the suspicious e-mail or url address

to the IRS mailbox [email protected], and then delete the e-mail from your inbox. P
