The theory is that the more walking, lifting, kneeling, squatting, carrying, cleaning, cooking, talking, praying, and perspiring you do the more calories you will burn and the more ounces you will drop. Exercising with your fellow Brothers may motivate you to take on bigger things like more intense physical routines and who knows, maybe even running for a Council Office or volunteering for a committee chairmanship. To this end, Council members are urged to attend motivational group support encounters (aka our business meetings) every second Tuesday of the month at 7:30 P.M. Seriously, exercise is good for our bodies, our minds, and our spirit. It is ultimately good for our souls and our happiness. Remember Brothers, the goal of goals is to spend eternity in Heaven. Burning calories for Jesus with the Knights and exercising the cheerful giving of your time and talents to serve other people will help fortify your body and your soul while making the Lord very happy. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2019 There is no question that obesity is a national health threat and a major challenge. The weight loss industry in the United States is big business, and getting bigger every year. COUNCIL FREE THROW CONTEST

Loren Wallin- Chairman The Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship Contest is happening this month in councils throughout the nation. Our annual Council Free Throw Contest will be done in two phases this year. The first already scheduled part will happen at the St. Ignatius Parish Gym on Friday January 18th. Mr. Rich Romo, the PE teacher there has again invited us in to run the contest for the 9-14 year old boys and girls in the 3rd-8th grade PE classes. (4th grade – 8:20, 5th – 8:55am, 3rd – 9:30, 7th – 10:45, 6th – 11:30, then about a 2 hour break, 8th – 2:15pm No dates have been set up yet at OLA but hope to find out soon from the PE teacher there, Mike McKenna. In the past at OLA, it has usually taken 3 days to cover the right classes. We will be needing Brother Knights to help at St. Ignatius on Jan. 18th and when we come up with dates for OLA we will let you know and will need help then also. The free throw contest is for 9-14 year old boys and girls who would like to compete. Each participant will compete only against kids of their own age and gender, with the best of 15 consecutive free throw attempts determining the winner. If there are any ties for the most made, a shoot-off will be done to determine the winner. The winners in each group will be eligible to continue on to compete at the District, Chapter, and State Free Throw Championships in February and March. Awards are given out at each level and also nationally as Supreme recognizes the top kids throughout the nation.

UPCOMING STAND DOWNS FOR HOMELESS VETERANS

Dan Aseltine Stand Down refers to a grassroots, community-based intervention program designed to help the nation’s thousands of homeless veterans “combat” life on the streets. Hundreds of homeless veterans are provided a broad range of necessities including food and clothing; medical, legal and mental health assistance; job counseling and referral; and importantly, companionship and camaraderie to lift their spirits. The “give a hand up — not a handout” philosophy of Stand Down is carried out through the work of hundreds of volunteers. Over the past few years, several Knights from Council 4970 have volunteered at various Stand Downs in Mather, Dixon, Elverta, and Sacramento. The next local Stand Down will be a one-day affair at the First Church of the Nazarene at 1828 - 28th Street in Sacramento. This single-day effort will focus on the distribution of winter gear to homeless Veterans. Date = Thursday, January 24. Time = 0800 to 1400. To register to volunteer contact: https://signup.com/client/invitation2/secure/2618136/true#/invitation When registering, please identify yourself as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 4970. The second upcoming Stand Down will occur over three days at the Placer County Fairgrounds (Roseville): Tuesday, May 14 through Thursday, May 16. To register to volunteer for this comprehensive event: https://placerveteransstanddown.org/ When registering, please identify yourself as a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 4970. There will be other local Stand Downs for homeless Veterans during calendar year 2019, as unfortunately the need is great. As details become available regarding future Stand Downs, information will be made available to the members of Council 4970. Thank you for your willingness to consider assisting those homeless Veterans who have served our country in uniform. For further information, please contact Veterans Chairman Dan Aseltine ([email protected]) or Deputy Grand Knight Miguel Sabral ([email protected]).

************MEMBERSHIP NOTES ************

During the Planning Meeting on Tuesday November 27, 2018 at Our lady of the Assumption Church, a motion was made to read in the name and to vote on an applicant desiring to join our council. A quorum of members being present, the name of John Gerges was read into the record and approved for membership by unanimous vote. The candidate was previously interviewed and is a practical Catholic. Candidate John Gerges will take his 1st Degree at St. Clare Catholic Church in Roseville in the near future. During the Breakfast with Santa Breakfast event at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church on Saturday December 1, 2018, a motion was made to read in the name and to vote on an applicant desiring to join our council. A quorum of members being present, the name of Richard Romo was read into the record and approved for membership by unanimous vote. The candidate was previously interviewed and is a practical Catholic. Candidate Richard Romo will take his 1st Degree at St. Clare Catholic Church in Roseville on December 10, 2018. He is a parishioner at St. Ignatius Church. Prospective member Mark Miller attended a recent meeting. Brother Michael Dougherty talked about him, noting that he is a recent convert to Catholicism, a retired civil engineer, and a member of Our Lady of Assumption. He was interested and excited to join. Application of Mark Miller was voted upon and unanimously approved by the council. Mark Miller received his Admission Degree at St. Clare Church on Dec.10, 2018 After he posed for a picture with the brothers in the kitchen at OLA, Santa (Brent Jones) told me us was thinking about becoming a Knight in our Council. We grabbed him by his red-costumed arm and ushered him over to Gene so he could talk to him. We are hoping to complete the paperwork and get him to a degree in early January.

COUNCIL CHRISTMAS PARTY 2018

This year, the decision was made to try something new for our Council Christmas Party, including a smaller, more intimate location. Our members wanted to have a relaxed party experience with lots of opportunity to socialize, instead of Brothers knights and Lady Knights having to cook, serve, and clean up. And importantly to make it FREE!

PGK Chuck Cuny and members of his Family stepped up and volunteered to prepare and serve a delicious ham dinner with all the trimmings, including dessert. They also put a Christmas program together that included singing traditional Christmas carols, the reading of a Christmas story with nativity building, and a drawing for some very nice door prizes. In lieu of a suggested gift exchange, our guests made contributions to our Brother Knights in Paradise Council 7773. Sixty-nine (69) Brothers and their families lost their homes and all their personal belongings in the epic Camp Fire. A donation basket was placed on a table for those who wanted to financially help the Paradise Council. The spirit of Christmas flowed and the basket was quickly filled by monetary donations in the amount of $1,000. These funds, plus the $1,000 previously contributed in November by a unanimous vote of our Council members has resulted in a total of $2,000 being sent by Council 4970 to brighten the Christmas of our Brothers and their families in Paradise. We are grateful to PGK Chuck Cuny for chairing this event and the Cuny children, David, Richard, Julia and Theresa, who stepped up to organize and put on this event for the rest of us to enjoy. Thank you Cunys!! We thank Deputy Grand Knight Miguel Sabral for reprising his role as Santa

Claus again this year. Also, a BIG thank-you to PGKs Deacon Larry Niekamp for leading us in prayer and reading the Christmas Calling, Michael Langer for leading us in the flag salute and of course our singing minstrel, Peter Kilkenny. The party was a huge success and guest feedback was that they would like to do it all again next year. Ho, Ho, Ho FOLLOW UP: Worthy Brothers, we achieved our goal in making Christmas a little brighter for our Brother Knights in Paradise. The following note was received on December 18, 2018 from Grand Knight Jim Collins (Council 7773) tells us that “Your donations have arrived. We are overwhelmed by your generosity. You have brought light in the midst of a very dark Advent”

KNIGHTLY ELVES VISIT MATERNITY HOME

Deacon Larry Niekamp, Chairman

On Saturday, December 15, 2018, eight Knights and five of their wives came to the Bishop Gallegos Maternity Home bearing gifts. This year the home’s director had told us that they really needed new blankets for the women – and that’s exactly what we brought. From special collections we took at recent meetings, we were able to purchase warm thermal

blankets for each bed in the home. Enough money was left to also give a gift certificate to each of the staff members. One of the wives also brought a gift bag with a nice warm, knitted scarf and a card. We had the opportunity to meet several of the mothers and their babies as we enjoyed a delicious lunch provided by the home. Our visit and gifts remind the women that they are not forgotten, and they remind us that “it is in giving that we receive.”

PANCAKE PARADE!!!

Of the dozens of pictures from our last two Pancake Breakfasts (SI and OLA) in December, these show best the essence of our activity: WE cook, THEY eat! Both breakfasts engaged about 20 Knights and help from

parish minitries. The proceeds greatly helped each parish, and, even though we pretend to complain about the work, we do so enjoy the camaraderie and sense of service!
