harbors a great amount of talent, knowledge, and nutrition expertise. My motto this year has been, “RD Who? RD You…” Why? I feel like every RD and DTR has a message on what it means to them to practice and how to convey their contribution. Please share your stories, about National Nutrition Month, RD Day, events, and testimonials regarding advocacy for our profession.
Be proud of what you do, say, write, and share. Don’t forget your worth and know you truly make a difference!
Sincerely,
Alexandra Lautenschläger, RD, LD
South Carolina Dietetic Association President
My fellow South Carolina RD’s and DTR’s, I hope you enjoyed this year’s National Nutrition Month! I can hardly believe that winter had a mild ending and spring an early start. Having said that, I want to start off by inviting each and every one of you to the South Carolina Dietetic Association’s Annual Meeting in Charleston, April 13th-14th. This year’s theme is Finding Your Fit! Our team has worked so hard to plan this and offer not only CEU’s, but both networking and fellowship opportunities. You all work in a variety of fields of this wonderful career and what better time for us all to come together to share ideas and to learn from one another!
Also, we continue to face some challenges along the way. Healthcare is changing every day and now more than ever we need to stick together as a profession as THE nutrition professional. Sylvia Escott-Stump, who spoke at our meeting in 2011 and current President of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, recently sent out an email asking us to continue to work together. As many of you know, CMS is willing to cover Intensive behavioral counseling for Obesity. However, the RD’s were left out of this new coverage. She wrote in a letter to all members, “Part of our advocacy efforts included a
petition to the White House through the “We the People” process, asking the Obama administration to have CMS reconsider its decision which limits direct billing of intensive behavioral counseling for obesity to primary care providers.
Our next step is to continue our efforts and for them to not stop at signing the petition or even sending letters. So, what can each member do now? First, stay informed and know the facts. It is important that members carefully review the information that is shared in order to have accurate and meaningful dialogues on this issue. To learn more, visit http://www.eatright.org/Members/content.aspx?id=6442466998 .” Next, if you haven’t communicated with your members of Congress, please reach out today and ask them to stand up for the effectiveness of registered dietitians. Take action now! It takes just a few minutes to do and it does make a difference, visit http://www.eatright.org/members/actioncenter.aspx.
I am very honored to have served you this year as President and realize that South Carolina

The Amy Joye Memorial Research Award is given to honor Amy’s memory by fostering the scientific development of future nutrition leaders, especially in South Carolina and Georgia. The project must involve human research and focus on obesity prevention/weight control, dietary assessment methodology to investigate/enhance accuracy of dietary reports, or fruit/vegetable gardens. Applicants are required to work with a mentor. The application deadline is April 1. The application is available on the AND Foundation's website. If you have questions about the application process, please contact Beth Labrador at the AND Foundation by phone at 800-877-1600 (extension 4821) or by email at [email protected].
As of March 12, 2012, a total of $76,102 has been raised. Many thanks to the donors listed on SCDA’s website at www.eatrightsc.org.
District associations and individuals may want to make donations (which are tax deductible). This will help enable a $5,000 nutrition research award to be made on an annual basis through the AND Foundation. The donation form is on SCDA’s website on the home page at www.eatrightsc.org.
At the SCDA 2012 Annual Meeting on April 13-14 in Charleston, bring your cash, checkbook, and/or credit card and shop the fundraising events to support our profession and

THE PALMETTO LEAF - APRIL 2012
On Wednesday, March 21st, about 20 SCDA members went to Columbia for our 5th Annual Legislative Day. The Public Policy Panel has grown this year and includes the State Policy Representative (Kristen Quisenberry), Public Policy Coordinator Chair and Elect (Vivian Haley Zitlin and Sandra McDaws), State Regulatory Specialist (vacant), along with the Delegate (Mary Etta Moorachian), President (Alex Lautenschlager), and President Elect (Nina Crowley). This year attendees met at Capitol City Club and kicked off the day with three presentations to help boost their confidence about the public policy climate, and the logistics of meeting with a legislator. We enjoyed lunch and then headed over to the State House.
Phyllis Allen, MS, RD, LD, State Director of Public Health Nutrition with SC DHEC presented an industry update and described the Community Transformation Grant, the Healthy SC Initiative (HSCI), and several of the bills that are currently in the Senate and House of Representatives. Angie Combs, the SC LLR Administrator gave an update on the state of Licensure in SC. We currently have 866 Licensed Dietitians to date! Angie reminded us that if you have a question about whether or not a non-RD is out of their scope of practice (and encroaching on yours), you should report them by going to www.llr.online.com and filling out a Complaint form, getting it notarized, and faxing or mailing in to the address listed. It is your duty to report harm, and feel free to contact Angie directly if you have any questions about what constitutes a violation of the SC Licensure law at 803-896-4625 or [email protected]. Finally, Donald Wood, our SCDA Executive Director, who is well versed in the legislative process, gave an update on how to meet with your elected officials.
We left with several useful tips for our meetings with our State Senators and State Representatives. In all we made contact with about 30 of the legislators, either by face to face meetings, leaving packets of information about what RDs do and how we can help them as the nutrition experts, and by sending in notes while they were in session.
If you are interested in making contact with your elected officials, please contact Kristen, as we are compiling a list of SC RDs to be ‘Public Policy Partners’ who can reach out to their legislators during the year. Contact Kristen Quisenberry at [email protected] or (843) 670-8093. You can find your legislators by going to scstatehouse.gov, enter address/zip code, then find who your national and state/local legislators are. This is much easier and more fun than it sounds – its having conversations with our elected officials so they are familiar with what RDs do, so that when any nutrition policies are on the table, they know who to reach out to!

Legislative Day 2012 Was a Success!
THE PALMETTO LEAF - APRIL 2012
Amazing, fun, and
educational events have
been our focus recently at
CTDA! We hosted our 2nd
Annual, Registered
Dietitian Day event to
honor our CTDA dietitians!
To show how proud we are
of our members we hosted
a Culinary Event on March
9th at the Art Institute of
Charleston. Chef Dillon
Snider, Executive Chef
from Season Charleston and
instructor at the Art
Institute helped 35 CTDA
members fine tune their
culinary skills. Chef Snider
taught us how to add flavor
with herbs, spices, dry
rubs, marinades low in
sodium, prepare low-fat
sauces, proper cutting
technique, and how to cook
seasonal with local veggies
and fish. The event was a
blast and participates really
enjoyed the experience!
During February,
Charleston area dietitians
were invited to a CEU
presentation hosted by
Coram Specialty Infusion
Services. The presentation
topic was: Nutrition Support
for Solid Organ and Blood Cell
Transplant Recipients. 45
members enjoyed the
thorough presentation and
dinner at Liberty Taproom
and Grill! CTDA’s second
book club took place in
February and Charleston
area dietitians were invited
to read “The End of
Overeating: Taking Control
of the Insatiable American
Appetite.” Seventeen
members were in
attendance. The book club
led to great discussion and
reflection on how we, as
dietitians, can help the
American population with
overeating.
Charleston Trident Dietetic
Association continues to
flourish and we are close to
100 members! We are
always welcoming new
members to join our
association and Charleston
dietitians can look forward
to more book clubs and
CEU events to take place
this Spring.

Congratulations to Celia Witt Beauchamp, RD, LD on her induction into the Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame. Celia is a clinical dietitian at Coastal Carolina Hospital. This is an award that was only awarded to six individual across the United States and it is rare that a Registered Dietitian gets recognized for such an award.
Celia was recognized for establishing innovative diabetes education programs after realizing there was a lack of education about the diabetes epidemic in Jasper County. In 2009, Celia pulled together a group of community health providers and organized the first Diabetes University for

Jasper County. Each of the half-day programs featured physician speakers, nutritionists/dietitians, certified diabetes educators, exercise physiologists and others who shared helpful information with diabetics and caregivers to diabetics. In addition to this community program, Celia organized a Diabetes Education Program at Coastal Carolina Hospital. This program for members of the community provides a four-week series of classes targeted at newly diagnosed diabetics. She is now spearheading a Diabetes Work Group at the hospital to make sure we are providing quality care, services and education to diabetic patients and their families.
Celia was one of seven employees inducted into the Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame. This year’s recipients were chosen from almost 100 nominations. Tenet Heroes are nominated by their hospital’s leadership team and selected based on their dedication to their patients, co-workers and communities. The Tenet Heroes Hall of Fame recognizes exceptional employees who demonstrate Tenet’s values of quality, integrity, service, innovation and transparency and represent the best of who we are and what we do.
Congratulations Celia!
