REHAU has announced a £775,000

investment in its edgeband production

facility at Amlwch on Anglesey.

A major extension will be built to house

new set up and recycling equipment which

will help to deliver greener products in

higher volumes.

The new facility will store, prepare and

recycle the paints used in the application of

colours and patterns to the edgeband and will

also regrind the waste and offcuts which can

be reintroduced into the extrusion process

without any visual or functional detriment to

product quality.

Allison Tucker, the Business Team Leader

responsible for REHAU’s furniture

edgebands, said: “This investment will give

us the space we need to service the growing

demand from customers for REHAU

edgeband produced in the UK

“It is also a statement of intent which

demonstrates not only our ongoing

commitment to UK manufacturing but also

our determination to deliver products which

are greener than ever.”

REHAU’s Amlwch facility produces 70%

of the edgeband which REHAU supplies into

the UK market and recently received a global

award for its success in implementing lean

manufacturing techniques.For further information:

EVENTS

Working with Wood is Important forall ManufacturersTalking to both signed –up exhibitors

and manufacturers planning to visit

W12 Working with Wood and the

parallel Working with Design shows,

there is already a sense of anticipation

and even impatience to get into 2012

and get things moving.

The W10 show underlined the strength

of the ‘W’ events in times of economic

uncertainty. Despite the 2010 backdrop

buyers came to seek out new suppliers –

able to offer cost reductions or increased

breadth of product and market. W12 looks

set again to provide its well-established

landmark boost to the market.

One trend or theme that constantly crops

up in discussions is the need for Working

with Wood to offer the broadest possible

range of machinery, solutions and systems.

Kitchen and furniture manufacturers tell

the W12 team that the upper end of the

market is holding up well and in Ireland

the economic forecast is for growth of one

per cent.

Very often this sector is served by the

smaller, niche but highly skilled specialists

– not companies that would necessarily be

investing in large, high volume production

equipment.

These companies come to W12 Working

with Wood to seek out the latest high-tech

but smaller solutions that will offer their

operations new advantages in flexibility,

operating cost reductions and

improvements in final product quality.

Alongside the very larges stands of the

big industrial machinery suppliers – who,

by the way, also offer a wide range of entry

level options – visitors will find the best

shop window for the smaller manufacturer.

Two such exhibitors are the Axminster

Power Tool Centre and the Hoffmann

Machine Company.

Axminster Power Tool Centre has taken

on the UK agency for the top quality range

of Italian manufactured Griggio machines

for the small to medium sized workshop.

Andy Cross, Head of Trade & Commercial

Sales at Axminster says that in the

continuing tough economic situation many

companies are moving away from highly

specified and over-priced machinery and

instead are investing in good solid products

that do the job.

Hoffmann has traditionally had one of

the busiest stands at all the past “W”

exhibitions. This buzz of activity is

generated by Hoffmann’s famous dovetail

key jointing system which is so versatile

and solution-providing that it is used in the

most diverse cabinet and joinery

applications and in industries beyond.

Small businesses across Britain using the

Hoffmann system will more often than not

tell you they first saw it demonstrated at

W6, 8 or 10!

Another fast changing section that affects

all manufacturers is that of energy and

wood waste disposal. W12 Working with

good range of modern machines complementing our own

“Over the years, the show has

proven to be an effective window for SCM Group products. At each event, the SCM Group has had the opportunity

to display its new technologies and solutions, always accompanied by the traditional Italian flare and hospitality. UK

customers have shown over the years to appreciate the innovations and price-quality ratio offered by the SCM

Group companies, so we feel that the investment required in participating in W12 is money well spent, and also in

the interest of the UK woodworking

community. We look forward to

meeting all our existing customers

once again in Birmingham, and offer

them those solutions that have made

them grow with us over the many

years of the SCM Group's presence

on the UK market. Also, we want to

take the opportunity to meet new

customers and demonstrate the very

latest products the SCM Group can

offer them to improve their

production processes."

As a direct result, the organisers Huddlestone

Events have launched a prestigious Awards

competition that will be judged by a panel of

leading industry experts.

The Design in Manufacturing Awards will be

claimed by the best judged entry that fulfil a

number of criteria but principally the central

concept of design being the core success of a

manufactured product that can be commercially

brought to market. This will include

individuality of the product, its inherent quality

and performance and any edge that gives it a

commercial advantage while offering the final

user tangible benefits.

In essence, a design that sets a finished

product apart from the rest.

Entry forms and full details will be sent out to

all exhibitors in due course and the judging will

take place before the exhibition takes place.

The Design in Manufacturing Awards will be

presented to the winning entrants at the W12

Holzma, the world market leading

manufacturer of horizontal beam saws

has taken another big step forward

with its new 4 Series. This latest

innovative generation of saws,

presented for the first time in Homag

City at Ligna 2011, offers a great

return on investment, is easy to use

and provides significant savings.

Simon Brooks, sales and marketing

director of Homag UK explains, “In order to

suit all applications, Holzma offers saws from

entry level to high volume demand. Following

on from the successful launch of Holzma’s 3

Series in 2010, this year the company has

introduced the completely revamped and

significantly improved 4 Series.

“In total, there are five saws in the range:

The HPP 410 and HPP 430 front loading

saws, the HPL 410 and HPL 430 with rear

lift table and through feeding concept and

the HKL angular system.

ecoPlus – Saving Money and the Environment

“Many of the successful features of the 3

Series form the foundation for the new

4 Series. A key feature is the energy-saving

ecoPlus system which was developed to

reduce operating costs and permit energy

savings of up to 30 percent.

“One of the central components of

ecoPlus is the standby function; this

switches the machine to an energy-saving

mode either automatically or by pressing

the green ecoPlus button. As soon as this

‘hibernation’ mode is entered, the machine

immediately interrupts normal operation,

switches off all energy consuming units

and deactivates extraction saving money

and reducing carbon emissions. By simply

pushing the green button again, the

machine is back into full operation.”

Features and Benefits of the 4 SeriesFurther advances to the design of the 4

Series significantly improve performance.

PROFILE

Simon continues, “A completely redesigned

saw carriage only raises the saw blades into

the cut and not the whole motor assembly.

This is very energy efficient as it requires

significantly less compressed air, speeds up

the process and increases productivity.

“The patented ‘shark’s fin’ side aligning

device remains an integral part of Holzma’s

saw carriage and this feature alone can

reduce cycle times by up to 25% compared

to traditional overhead side aligning

cylinders.

“A major advantage of Holzma’s shark’s

fin is that it sits inside the saw carriage

allowing it to side align boards up to the

entire cutting width of the machine. In

addition, the shark’s fin protrudes through

the machine table, meaning even very thin

boards and laminates can be side aligned

accurately.

“Holzma’s two fingered clamps feature

throughout the 4 series allowing accurate

positioning and clamping of small and

large components. The contact pressure of

the clamps is dependent on the height of

the books; the higher the book, the greater

the pressure. The clamping pressure can

also be easily adjusted to suit each type of

material so that every panel is handled

correctly and carefully.

“With the ever increasing diversity of

materials, such as pressure-sensitive

lightweight boards, composite boards and

plastic sheets, there is a need for specific

technology to handle them. Holzma has

bundled the technologies to deal with these

materials into their Soft Touch package.

The company also offers equally innovative

package solutions for scratch-sensitive

materials including high gloss components.

“Another new feature is the window in

the pressure beam. This sounds very

simple but is actually a significant

improvement that gives the operator a clear

view of the processes inside the machine,

making the 4 Series even safer and less

restricted.”

Optional Extras for the 4 SeriesAdditional units can significantly

enhance performance of the 4 Series and

are available for any of the models.

“One of the most useful additions and yet

another technical innovation from

Holzma,” claims Simon, “is the in line

automatic label application system. This

sits inside the cut line and automatically

labels panels as they are cut, not only

providing quicker application and accurate

positioning, but also requiring less

intervention from the operator and

therefore delivering increased efficiency.

“There’s also the optional ‘postforming

saw’. This unit acts as an additional axis

ensuring perfect cuts on postformed panels

or pre-edgebanded strip parts of up to

90mm in thickness.”

The optional Power Concept feature

allows the machine to cut strips with

different crosscut lengths together. This is

achieved by means of an additional clamp

which works independently to the standard

program fence clamps.

The advantages of Power Concept

include up to 40% higher output,

significantly shorter cutting cycles and

improved material flow. It also delivers high

material throughput, lower costs per cut

and simultaneous feeding and cutting as

the Power Concept clamp positions the last

strip at the cutting line while the main

program fence feeds the next book of

panels from the lift table (HPL).

Optimisation SoftwareIn order to provide the operator with a

high level of machine control, Holzma

supply the 4 series machine with their tried

and tested CADmatic 4. Simon again, “Easy

to understand and use, this control software

allows even inexperienced operators to

quickly get to grips with it.

“This package truly enhances the

performance, flexibility and efficiency of the

saws. It features, touch screen functionality,

a large 19” TFT colour monitor, 3D graphics

with real time operator guidance, error

messages with video assistance, online

diagnostics and the ability to work in

harmony with Magicut optimisation

software as well as other third party software.

“The 4 Series is ideal for companies that

process panel material on a large scale.

Impressive saw blade projection and high

speed are features of all the models,

ensuring volume throughput for a relatively

low cost. The 4 series is a real work horse

product that is typical of the Holzma brand.

Finally, the icing on the cake is that all

Holzma saws can be linked to our time-

efficient board storage systems. These

systems provide precise automated stock

control thus saving time and cost,”

concludes Simon.

Both a Holzma saw and a Bargstedt

storage system are permanently on show at

the Homag UK showroom in Castle

Donington, Derby. All customers are

welcome to visit to see the machinery.

ABI (UK) Ltd operate from a 16-acre

site in East Yorkshire where they

manufacture high quality, British

made holiday and leisure homes. With

a rich heritage dating back to 1971,

ABI has established itself as one of the

premier bands within the holiday and

leisure homes sector. An important

part of ABI’s continuing success has

been its choice of highly reliable

machinery including the latest

Schelling fh 4 cut-to-size saw.

The philosophy of ABI has been to invest

in machinery that can deliver its

commitment to excellent holiday home

design, whilst encompassing every

individual taste, budget and season. The

build-quality success of ABI has been

achieved in part with the help from the

latest technology from Schelling. It is

important however not to forget the

contribution made by the individual

craftsman, the hand built nature only adds

to the appeal of the ABI brand.

With 36 different models which

have an extensive range of internal

door and surface finishes,

ABI’s production process

required a versatile

machine with the ability

to cut a variety of material.

The solution was the fh 4

because it delivered the flexibility to

change from medium density fibre board to

plywood panels at the drop of a hat. As

Chris Patterson, the Factory Manager,

commented: “It is important to have a

sawing system which is adaptable to

changing customer needs, particularly with

regard to board dimensions and board

surface quality.”

ABI’s investment in the Schelling fh 4

means it now has capacity for both small

and large batch production and equally for

fast throughput of large orders. According

to Chris Patterson: “The fh 4 is perfect in

both scenarios.” This is because many

operations on the fh 4 are automated as

standard. For example, integrated sensors

automatically detect the material book

height and adjust the saw projection height

followed by the pressure beam which

adjusts itself to the size of the material as

well as the book height. So when ABI

change material they don’t have to adjust

anything, the fh

4 does it all automatically. This

automation means the fh 4 always works

with the correct surface pressure, because

too much pressure can reduce cutting

quality.

The four-day working shift pattern was

perhaps the biggest reason for choosing the

fh 4. Basically the fh 4 has the advantage of

automatically adjusting the saw travel and

saw stroke speed resulting in shorter cycle

times which means it can saw more

material in a shorter time – this means the

fh 4 can achieve higher production figures

in a single day shift.

According to Chris, dimensional cutting

accuracy was very high on ABI’s wish list of

requirements. “However so too was the

investment value, so when we learnt the fh

4 had the same standard features as the fh

6, such as double aligners, we knew we had

to invest in the fh 4.” Double aligners, one

on either side of the saw line

remain on the material even during

cutting to provide dimensional

angular accuracy. With an

alignment range of 40mm to

2200mm this was ideal

because ABI knew the fh 4 could

deliver high cutting accuracy even

with the narrowest strips. This

commitment to technological features may

have something to do with the fact that

Schelling are the only specialist cut-to-size

saw producer in the World.

Chris Patterson, commented, “the fh 4

has definitely helped us be more flexible

when planning our weekly production

demands.”

INSTALLATION

Page 13: Panel & Joinery Production January-February 2012

Woodworkers wishing to streamline

their sawing processes his year should

take a look at the Compact series of

entry-level vertical panel saws from

the world leader, Striebig.

The space-saving Compact enables small

and medium sized businesses to move into

the world of precision and quality vertical

panel sawing at a sensible price.

Whether you choose a machine with a

manual or automatic feed, the Compact

series is characterized by flexibility and

cost-effective use.

There are nine cut size versions available,

from 3100 mm x 1544mm up to 5350mm x

2200mm, all with a cutting depth of

60mm. They feature central support and

small parts support over the entire length of

the saw, making the cutting of small work

pieces much easier.

All nine models are now available in

Compact AV versions incorporating an

automatic cut cycle facility, to make them

even more productive. This feature was

previously only to be found on Striebig’s

more expensive models.

With manual feeding of the saw unit

eliminated, the operator’s job is made

much easier, giving him time to prepare the

next sawing job.

As well as the Compact, Striebig offers

the Standard, the Evolution, and the high-

tech Control vertical sawing centre, also all

available in nine standard sizes.

The popular Standard – the original

heavyweight, tried and tested over decades -

is the perfect saw for companies of all sizes.

The fully-automatic Control offers an

optional Electronic Positioning System

(EPS) on both axes for the automatic

positioning of both the length stop and saw

head. This increases the saws’ productivity

by delivering automatic repeat strip and

upper trim cutting.

Latest standard features include a laser-

supported display for totally accurate

horizontal cuts, another industry ‘first’ for

Striebig. There’s also a cutting list input

function, provided via a USB memory stick.

Numerous procedures are carried out at

the press of a button, including locking and

releasing the beam saw, setting the

horizontal cutting height, plunging and

swivelling the motor, locking the support

rollers during sawing and fine saw blade

adjustment.

Where high levels of panel throughput

are needed, the Control and the Evolution

offer an optional 100mm cutting depth

instead of the previous 80mm. The

Evolution has many similar features to the

Control, making it one of the most

advanced manual panel saws available.

Both series feature as standard Striebig’s

user-friendly “touch and saw” operating

system. This delivers easy and convenient

machine control through a touch screen

panel that operates all of the machine’s

functions.

Striebig machines,

which can be wall-

mounted or freestanding,

cut practically all wood-

based sheet materials as

well as timber, plaster

board, plastics and

aluminium panels. They

guarantee impressive dust

limit values well below

1mg/m3.

A huge range of

accessories enables users

to further extend the

performance of the saws

and to adapt them to

individual business needs. These include a

scoring saw to prevent laminate panel

edges from tearing out, ensuring a neat cut

ready to be glued.

The saws can also be built in special sizes

and fitted with specialist equipment to suit

individual requirements.

Striebig is continuing to introduce

enhancements to its product range. One

recent example is the tool database for the

Control and Evolution models. Data from

the saw, profile cutter and grooving tool can

be stored in this high-performance software

module. The tool database is easy to use via

the touch screen panel, while a connection

to the electronic positioning system (EPS)

ensures a high degree of flexibility and

excellent repeat accuracy for panel cutting.

Prices for Striebig machines are

extremely competitive, with strong

customer demand being helped by the

Swiss manufacturer’s decision to hold price

levels for the third year in a row.

Idess Retail are a forward thinking

company delivering quality solutions

within the retail, commercial and

leisure markets, based in Harlow, Essex.

Idess, formally Essanby and CIL, have a

strong 30 year history in

manufacturing, supplying and

installing shop fittings to retail

stores, high street banking and leisure

environments.

The Idess facilities and manufacturing

plant are spread over 50,000 sq. feet and

contain traditional craftmanship and

handcrafts, but also include many CNC

machines in the machine shop. The

company has a policy of continuous

updating and adding to their machinery

portfolio, installing the latest technology to

improve quality, reducing delivery times

and keeping ahead of their competitors.

Production Manager, Tim Harper,

comments "With an existing beam saw and

a wall saw, we were experiencing capacity

issues, so we decided to install an

additional beam saw as our business is

continuously on the increase, and we are

currently working 24/7. As we already have

3 - Morbidelli CNC Machining Centres, we

contacted SCM UK and other potential

suppliers, to obtain proposals and

specifications for machines to suit our exact

requirements, but also with additional

options to speed up our panel production

output. We also moved our board storage

area to make space for a new beam saw."

Mike Lee, SCM Group UK's Area Sales

Manager, visited Idess, then took Tim

Harper to Gabbiani's factory in Rimini, for

demonstrations and detailed technical

discussions. After viewing the Gabbiani

and SCM Groups impressive facilities, an

order was placed for a Gabbiani Galaxy T3

110A 45 machine and it was delivered and

installed in August this year.

The Galaxy has a 4500mm cutting width

capacity and has a rear panel lifting and

feeding system, fed by powered rollers that

is loaded with a pack of board by fork lift.

One or more panels to be cut are

automatically pushed off the board stack by

pushers on the saw's rip fence, that runs on

THK guides, and on to the saws rear table,Panel stack lift table on Gabbiani Beam Saw at Idess Retail

then pushed against aligning stops located

in the table. Clamps on the rip fence firmly

grip the panel(s) as the aligning stops

disappear, then trim and successive rip cuts

are carried out. The rear table is fitted with

large diameter nylon wheels that reduce

friction on the panels, eliminating chipping

and damage.

The cut panels are fed onto a series of

front air flotation tables that can be easily

positioned to suit the operator. As the rip

fence and clamps retract to the rear of the

machine, the panels are easily turned

through 90 degrees for subsequent

trimming and cross cutting. An automatic

side aligner, with a 1200mm stroke, pushes

the panels against the cross cut fence

ensuring the panels are perfectly square.

The Galaxy has a pressure beam with a

new mechanical design providing a higher,

more uniform pressure on the panels, with

optimum extraction of shavings and

sawdust and with easy maintenance. Also

included is an innovative saw blade carriage

with electronic lifting running on THK

guides. The optimised blade stroke and

pressure beam stroke reducing any

unnecessary movements that cost valuable

production time. The saw carriage and

blade run on prismatic guides. Maximum

rigidity and perpendicular movement of the

blade with respect to the stack of panels

gives a drastic reduction of friction and

wearing on the materials at even the

highest running speeds.

Electronic setting of the scoring blade is

fast and the exact adjustment of the scoring

blade is by means of motors, electronically

driven, according to the values set by the

operator with the PC. The main saw motor

is 25HP for powerful cutting of the most

difficult materials, with a 110mm blade

projection. The saw carriage speed is up to

165 metres/min and the pusher speed is 95

- 120 metres /min.

A label printer is located by the

programming station, that enables the

operator to add a label to each cut panel for

further identification later in the production

process, including the use of bar codes.

The Galaxy's PLC takes care of the

running of all the machine devices. The

management software WINCUT, operating

in a Windows environment, has been

especially developed by Gabbiani, taking

into account all of the end user’s work

demands and requirements and enables

user-friendly management of the machine.

Optimisation software is installed on the

machine. The operator directly enters the

dimensions and required number of pieces

for each panel. The optimiser supplies the

cut table list and displays it on the screen.

Maximum number of lines per programme

is 30, maximum number of pieces per line

is 500 with 4 controlled cut levels. Cutting

pattern optimisation is according to the

operator’s needs, with cutting pattern

export via floppy disk or network. Cutting

cycle with three-dimensional simulation.

Production report obtained with the

number of produced panels and strips,

number of used panel sheets, waste

percentage, job execution time, machine

cost per hour and panel unit price, stock

and off-cuts management are all provided.

Tim Harper concludes "The previous

level of excellent service we have received

from SCM UK with our 3 Morbidelli's

certainly played a big part in our decision

making process for the new beam saw. The

machine was installed without any

problems and training of our operators took

place immediately, and if we required any

further assistance, SCM were there to help

us, so SCM will certainly feature in our

future machinery spending plans."

As a company, we have always looked to

the future and endeavoured to keep

ahead of customer demand and be

prepared to cater for the ever

changing needs of today’s

manufacturers as well as being fully

aware of the changing and often

volatile industry for which we have

been part of for the last 21 years.

For some time we have been aware of a

need in the market for quality European

made pressing machines, both for

traditional veneering onto flat boards and

also for veneering and laminating onto

curved structures and furniture such as

cabinetry doors.

When choosing new products and

forming partnerships with new suppliers,

we don't just look at how they can benefit

us, but how they can benefit our customers,

hence tending to deal with the smaller

more 'hands on' companies that can offer

the flexibility of catering for individual

requirements, are technically at the

forefront with their product range and

where we are dealing with a small number

of people rather than being passed from

department to department when answers

are needed in a hurry.

Two such companies are OMC and

Omniforme Presse.

OMC are a company with in excess of 20

years experience in the design,

development and construction of all types

of pressing machines from cold to single

and multi daylight platten presses, to

through feed laminating, automatic

membrane and even combination presses.

Also included in the OMC range are a

series of 'Airtec' models which allow the

wrapping of a laminate around a routed

panel typically used in the manufacture of

vinyl laminate doors for kitchen and

bedroom doors.

Omniforme Presse offer a range of static

membrane presses also known as vacuum

presses which are of a quality and robust

construction and have the option of an

overhead heating chamber to reduce curing

times which also increases productivity.

Included in the range is a model with 2

working surfaces which can easily be tilted

through 180 degrees so that as one side is

loaded and pressed, the other is in a heated

chamber in the lower half of the machine to

assist the curing process.

Pressing Ahead – The Italian Way

Page 18: Panel & Joinery Production January-February 2012

Panel & Joinery Production JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2012 See our website and interactive magazine www.p-j-production.com16

Since the leading Italian press

manufacturer, Sergiani Leopida

Presses, was acquired by the SCM

Group, their subsidiary, SCM UK, have

seen a dramatic increase in orders and

installations within the UK.

Sergiani presses are well known for their

quality, sturdiness and reliability, the result

of continuous technological innovation and

research over many years, being the first

Italian company to manufacture presses

over 60 years ago. Presses of all types are

manufactured to suit individual customer's

requirements, with different levels of

automation and production capacity.

One of the most popular range of

Sergiani presses is the model GS. It can be

supplied with single or multi-daylight

specification, with numerous platen

dimensions and different types of platens

with various heating mediums.

The main frame of the GS press has been

engineered with a high safety coefficient to

guarantee the highest level of rigidity and

sturdiness in each pressing cycle. The press

frame consists of an upper beam, the base,

the mobile platen and the longitudinal bars,

and are all machined on CNC Machining

Centres for maximum accuracy, then

assembled on a precision template.

Once welded, the hydraulic pressure

cylinders are normalised to eliminate any

possible internal tensions. The main steel

ram is chromed with a thick layer and

rectified. All gaskets are high resistant to

guarantee long life and a perfect seal.

Before assembly an attentive and precise

quality control system verifies all

dimensional tolerances. The cylinders are

mounted in the press and float to

compensate for thermal expansion, and are

equipped with special long flanges that

guarantee an efficient guiding of the ram,

even at its maximum stroke.

The hydraulic group consists of a double

pump and an electric motor immersed in

the hydraulic oil for optimum cooling. For

better maintenance and greater control, all

the groups are contained in a single unit -

high and low pressure pumps, oil filter,

valve and the maximum pressure valve.

A variety of platens are available,

including assembled steel platens, solid

steel platens and electrically heated platens.

The assembled steel platens are made of

tubular steel welded on a template then

tested to guarantee the sealing of the

heating liquid. An insulating panel gives

great thermal efficiency and the platen is

covered by an aluminium sheet to give a

high quality, flat surface and an optimal

distribution of heat to the veneered panels.

Solid steel platens are machined with

great precision on NC machining centres.

The channels for the heating liquid are

executed to optimised calculations to

ensure the very best transfer of heat to the

platen surface. With a high level of surface

finish to the platens, they are protected by a

sheet of Mylar appropriately tensioned.

Mylar is easily interchangeable and

replaced and guarantees the cleanliness of

the platen surface over time and an

excellent finish to the veneered panels.

Sergiani also offers electrically heated

platens with the very best quality on the

market today, including built-in resistors

that guarantee uniformity of temperature

up to 120deg C across the whole platen

area, reduced power consumption and

elevated thermal efficiency.

A number of methods are used to heat

the platens including from the customer's

own heating system, with feed and return

collectors via flexible pipes. A biomass

boiler can be fed with coal and/or wood

waste, and includes a water circulation

pump, connection pipes between the press

and the boiler and an expansion tank. An

electric boiler for heating water can reach

temperatures of 90deg C with expansion

tank, circulation pump, safety valves,

control and emergency thermostats , air

drain valves and power switchboard.

With an electric boiler and diathermic oil

heating medium, temperatures up to

120deg C are obtainable and with

equipment as the water boiler. Built-in

electrical resistors can also reach 120deg C,

simply connect to the electric supply.

The conveniently located control panel

includes a display with dedicated software

to offer the operator simple and immediate

use of the GS presses. A number of

parameters can be set up, controlled,

recalled and modified according to the

variety of work to be pressed. Includes

setting of the pressure of the hydraulic

circuit related to the specific pressure to be

achieved on the panel, the working

temperature related to the type of

veneering, timing of the pressing cycle,

setting of the start up of the boiler, when

fitted, before work begins to save

production time, and the setting of the

daylight opening.

Standard platen dimensions vary

between 2500 x 1300mm and 3500 x

1300mm with total thrust from 70 to 160

Tons. The daylight opening is 400mm, but

can be varied according to the panel

thicknesses, with intermediate platens

fitted to increase the number of panels

being veneered in each production cycle.

However, should any customer require any

special sizes or requirements, SCM

Sergiani can quote upon request.

Safety to the operator is a major

consideration, with double-action timed

push button operation for the movement of

the platen. An emergency cord is positioned

around the whole perimeter of the press so

that the

movement of the platen(s) can be

halted in any position.

CD (UK), national distributors of

Corian®, along with machinery and

power tools for fabricating solid

surface materials, has extended its

machinery range to include vacuum-

forming presses from leading Dutch

manufacturer, HABRU.

Habru specialises in the development

and manufacture of vacuum-forming

presses constructed in aluminium. They

are extremely solid and durable units, using

a combination of powerful vacuum and

membrane pressing, onto pre-made jigs, to

form curved or 3-dimensional shapes in

solid surface material, wood, veneer,

laminate or plastics.

Designed for simplicity of operation, Habru

vacuum-forming presses require only a

standard 240-volt single-phase power supply

and, thanks to their lightweight aluminium

construction and fitted castors, can be moved

easily around the workshop. Affordably

priced, these well-proven presses are available

in a range of eight standard table sizes,

ranging from 1000 x 1000mm to 3650 x

1800mm, and offer an economical alternative

to heavy-duty static vacuum presses.

Habru vacuum-forming presses achieve

an even vacuum force of around 100,000

N/m2, across the entire table area, with a

membrane stretch of between 400% and

800% depending on choice of membrane

media. Features include: special sealing and

clamping of membrane; integrated,

corrosion-free vacuum tank; vacuum

reduction valve for pressure adjustment;

and an operating panel with running-time

adjustment and auto switch-off.

Every Habru vacuum forming press is

tailored to the specific needs of the

customer and can be specified with a choice

of membrane; silicon, natural rubber or

polyurethane. Silicone is the preferred

choice for pre-heated work, natural rubber

for wood construction and polyurethane for

non-heated forming. High-quality Rietschle

vacuum pumps are fitted as standard, with

the option of oil-lubricated or oil-free to suit

the type of work being undertaken. An oil-

free pump reduces pressure levels by

around 85% making it best suited to veneer,

wood and laminate. However, an oil-

lubricated pump achieves nearly 100%

pressure reduction which is ideal for solid

surface and plastics.

CD (UK) is the exclusive distributor for

Habru vacuum presses in the UK and also

represents a number of other leading

machinery manufacturers through its

Machinery Division. For further technical

Tauberbischofsheim. Weinig AG

continues to invest in China. In

Yantai, Shandong province, the world

leader for machines and facilities for

solid wood processing is expanding the

production area of the plant by around

800 m2 to a total of 12,000 m2.

The new assembly hall was inaugurated

at a ceremony attended by the members of

the board at Weinig who had come

especially from Tauberbischofsheim.

In future Unicontrol 6 window machines

will be produced there. This classic angle

system for artisan production of window

frames has been in Weinig's range in

Germany for many years. The new

production facility in Yantai is intended

solely for the domestic market in China.

The expansion of the range with the

window machine is Weinig's response to

the strong growth experienced by the wood

processing industry in China. The

manufacturer is very confident for the

future. "Our Chinese customers

value engineering from

Germany", the Chairman of the

Board, Wolfgang Pöschl,

emphasizes. "The Unicontrol 6

will be assembled in Yantai

according to German standards

of quality to satisfy the

increasing demands of the

Chinese market."

The main factory in

Tauberbischofsheim will make a

significant contribution to the

market drive in China. Numerous precision

parts such as the cutter spindles for the

machines will be supplied from Germany.

"This means that the expansion of the plant

in Yantai will not compete in any way with

the production facility in

Tauberbischofsheim; on the contrary, it

strengthens its position," Pöschl explains.

Weinig's premium products will continues

to be made in Germany without exception.

Weinig has had its own plant in China

since 1995. Following successful

development in recent years, the

construction of the new assembly hall

marks the third large investment project.

Official inauguration of the new assembly hall:A Chinese tribute for the Board at Weinig

Page 24: Panel & Joinery Production January-February 2012

Leicester based Advanced Machinery

Services (AMS) has re-launched the

Bursgreen woodworking machinery

brand into the UK market. Bursgreen,

made famous in the latter part of the

20th Century, was a watchword for

quality in classic machinery. The re-

launch has been made possible by a

partnership between AMS, who own

the intellectual property rights for

the Bursgreen name, and Rojek, the

long established and highly respected

woodworking machine manufacturer

in the Czech Republic.

Competitively priced, the machines will be

badged ‘Bursgreen by Rojek’. The offering

will include three key product groups: the

KDR range designed for hobbyists and

disposable onsite applications; the Euro

Series 7 range for semi-professional or small

workshops and the Industry Series

professional range designed for medium to

large woodworking facilities.

“Since we acquired the intellectual

property rights for the Bursgreen brand in

2010 we’ve been looking for a

suitable partner to work with,”

explains Steve

Foster a director

and founder of

AMS. He

continues, “We

identified a gap in

the market for well

engineered value

product supported by first

class service and backup. With this business

model in mind we began a rigorous search

for the right partner. Groundwork included

extensive market research which took us

around the globe visiting a host of

manufacturing plants in our search for

exactly the right partner.

“When we went out to visit the Rojek

facility in the Czech Republic it was

immediately clear that we were dealing with

a professional manufacturer that has a

respected heritage in the woodworking

industry. The company has been designing

and manufacturing quality classic

machines since 1921 and has an enviable

track record. They do everything in-house,

from design and development through to

manufacturing and marketing.

“Rojek machines

were already

available in the UK

through a distributor;

however, it was

predominantly a tool distributor and as

such was focused on the semi-professional

market, not the mainstream woodworking

sector. As a consequence, the industry in

this country has not been made aware of

the full extent of machinery available in

Rojek’s range. Now we are the sole UK

distributor, this will change as our focus

will be firmly on the woodworking industry.

“As part of our due diligence, we also

spoke to companies in the UK who already

own Rojek machines and it was gratifying to

find that they are delighted with the quality

and performance of the equipment. Everyone

we spoke to confirmed what superb

machines they are and how cost effective they

have proved to be,” claims Foster.

Unique 18 Month Standard Warranty and

Guaranteed 24hr Service Support

One of the issues with manufacturers can

be the limited warranty and service support

they provide. Most manufacturers give a 12

month warranty with new machines but

once this period passes service can often

be an issue, as Steve McGloin, co-

founder and director of AMS

explains, “The majority of

companies selling woodworking

machines into the UK market are sales

based operations and they have very little

interest in the service side of the business.

“This is where we at AMS come into our

own. Our core business is service support;

it’s our passion and the very foundation of

our business. From the outset, the

Bursgreen by Rojek range of machines will

benefit from our first class service support.

New machines will come with an 18 month

standard warranty which can be extended up

to five years dependent on the machine type.

“Our nationwide network of service

engineers is being trained on the new range,

with engineers going out to the Rojek factory

for a two week period to get thorough

training on the entire range. We provide

customers with complete peace of mind; in

the event of a fault, we guarantee the onsite

attendance of a service engineer within 24

hours of the call alerting us of the issue.

“A dedicated hotline has been set up for

technical support and we have invested

heavily in a comprehensive spare parts

inventory to back-up the service operation.

With the investment we have made into

this project we are one hundred percent

confident that customers will experience a

level of service support unequalled in the

industry,” enthuses McGloin.

Experienced Nationwide Distributor Network

The Bursgreen by Rojek range will be

sold via a nationwide network of

distributors. AMS has already signed up

three distributors: SW Woodwork

Machinery in the north east, Dennis Price

Woodworking in Yorkshire and Grovewood

Machinery in Hampshire. Steve McGloin

again, “We want to have professionals

handling the sales of the machines so, as

service specialists, we felt it was important

to set up a distributor sales network that we

could work alongside to provide a single

point UK support system.

“We are currently in negotiation with

several reputable distributors and are

looking for additional like-minded

companies to complete our network.

Ultimately, we expect to have a network of

around 12 distributors across England,

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.”

A Long-term Commitment for the Future

AMS is fully committed to the success of

this new venture as Steve Foster explains,

“Since 2007 we have established a strong

track record as a provider of first class

service support in the UK woodworking

industry. Our strategy going forward is to

shore this up with a growing machine sales

operation, taking advantage of the famous

Bursgreen brand. This partnership with

Rojek is absolutely key to the future of our

business and we are investing heavily to

ensure its success.

“For starters, we have doubled our stand

space at this year’s W12 woodworking show

at the NEC in October. The increased space

will allow us to show the full range of

Bursgreen equipment. We will also be

exhibiting at the Timber Expo in September

at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry.

“To underline our long-term

commitment, we have commissioned a new

purpose built facility in Leicestershire that

will be open at the end of this year. It will

house our head office, showroom and

training operations on one state of the art

site at Skeffington Mill.

“The entire AMS team is really excited by

the launch of the Bursgreen by Rojek range

and we are eagerly looking forward to

working with our network of distributors.

To ensure the success of this

groundbreaking venture, we have set the

pricing of the machines very competitively,

a factor we feel is vital in these challenging

economic times.” concludes Foster.

PROFILE

Page 26: Panel & Joinery Production January-February 2012

In 1986 Neville Johnson began creating

innovative fitted furniture for the

home. Since then the company has

become the natural choice for high

quality bespoke furniture concepts,

embracing new ideas in traditional

furniture design. With a turnover

around £30 million, the Neville

Johnson Group Limited now operates

three divisions – bespoke fitted

furniture, staircases and kitchen

furniture.

The business is 100 percent committed

to customer satisfaction and has invested in

state-of-the-art machinery to achieve what it

refers to as ‘the Neville Johnson difference’.

The company believes that perfectly

handcrafted, fitted furniture should also be

affordable and to achieve this it recognised

the need to invest in woodworking

machinery that minimises material wastage

and delivers the maximum production

efficiencies available.

“Following a management buyout in

2006,” explains Neville Johnson’s operating

director, Jeff Forrester, “we set out a very

clear operating strategy. Our approach was

to invest in robust, reliable

woodworking equipment

that would enable us to

deliver quality bespoke furniture at very

competitive prices.

“As all our work is for bespoke furniture

that we design, manufacture and install for

the customer, we wanted the production

process to keep all the work pieces for a

particular job together. That led us to look at

nesting machines. At the time, these

combination machines were relatively new to

the UK market, but we were convinced that

they were the best solution for our needs.

“We looked at a number of the leading

players’ equipment, but the brand that

stood out head and shoulders above the

competition was Homag. As a

Group, they could

offer us everything we needed from

their specialist brands and, more

importantly, all their machines are

extremely reliable, technologically advanced

and consistently produce high quality

results.

“The Weeke factory invited us over to

Germany to see the nesting machines in

action and I must say it is was a very

impressive setup. They also arranged for us

to visit a company in Ireland to witness the

machines operating in a commercial

environment.

“Although the investment was a

considerable one – top quality machinery

doesn’t come cheap – we were convinced

that two Weeke BHP 210 CNC nesting

machines, two Brandt 780 edgebanders

with Ligmatech ZHR 15 return systems and

a Bütfering SCO 213 CC sander formed the

perfect package for our business.

“Previously, we had separate machines –

saws, routers and edgebanders. Now, with

the CNC nesting machines, each piece of a

customer’s job is sawn, routed, drilled and

labelled with the customer’s name on it

before it comes off the machine. Then the

complete job goes to be edgebanded and

sanded. This gives us much better control

over customers’ orders, as each job is kept

together throughout the production

process.”

Service With a Smile“It has been a pleasure dealing with

Homag,” continues Forrester, “From the

outset, the teams at Homag UK and in

Germany have gone out of their way to

make sure we have got the solution we

need.

“The installation and training were

superbly organised and because the

machines and software

are so easy to operate it has

really helped our business. In the past, we

have struggled to find the calibre of staff

who could cope with the complexities of

similar machinery but now, with the

Homag equipment, anyone can be trained

up to operate it successfully so we no

longer have a skills shortage.”

Key BenefitsJeff Forrester then went on to explain

the major benefits the Homag machinery

has bought to the business. “Unlike some

of our competitors, we don’t make product

from stock.

“All our work is bespoke and the pieces

that comprise each job are made as

required. We also offer customers a very

fast turn round on work and so it is

imperative that we can produce all the

pieces for a job at the same time.

“The Weeke CNC nesting machines

have been absolutely essential in giving us

the ability to achieve this and because the

sawing, routing and drilling are now all

done on one machine, we have been able

to reduce labour costs as well.

“Another big advantage has been the

optimisation of the material. The software

works out the optimum usage of each

sheet of wood before it is cut on the

nesting machines. This eliminates a huge

amount of wastage and keeps our raw

material costs low.

“The equipment has also enabled us to

do more complex jobs. In fact we have just

purchased a third Weeke nesting machine

with an automatic feed, position and

discharge system. This new model allows

us to do worktops on line. Traditionally, the

production of worktops is usually a very

laborious process, but with the new Weeke

CNC machine it is easy and again

optimises the use of the wood.”

Great Return on Investment“We look to get a return on investment

within two years,” continues Forrester,

“And the equipment from Homag has

easily achieved this target. We continue to

work closely with Homag to develop the

machines and our facility is often used by

them as a reference site, so it is a

partnership that works to our mutual

benefit.

“A lot of Homag’s competitors will offer

you a better price, but at the end of the day

you get what you pay for. Since we’ve

installed the Homag equipment we have

never had a major problem or issue with

any of the machines. That level of reliability

is absolutely vital for our business,”

concludes Forrester.

In-Excess retail stores provide an ever-

changing shopping experience for the

consumer, supplying quality

household, DIY, hardware, tools,

timber and garden products at

discount prices, with product lines

continually changing depending upon

availability.

With 5 outlets in Salisbury, Christchurch,

Ringwood, Southampton and Parkstone,

consumers visit the In-Excess premises on

a regular basis to view the latest products

available, their experience assisted by

having a cafe and tea shop on site. It is rare

for consumers to visit and leave without

making a purchase.

Owner, Carl Chambers, decided 12

months ago to examine the possibility of

manufacturing doors and garden related

products in-house rather than buying them

in from a number of sources, so he

approached SCM's local Distributor, Mike

Martin, of MJM Woodworking Machinery.

After initial discussions, it was decided to

visit the SCM Group's manufacturing

plants in Rimini, Italy, not only to see how

all the SCM machines were made, but also

see classical and CNC machines

demonstrated in SCM's impressive new

showroom.

Very happy with their visit to SCM, Carl

Chambers placed orders for a number of

SCM machines, including a L'Invincible SI

6000 Sliding Table Panel Saw, a TI 155 EP

Class Spindle Moulder, a TEN 220 Single

End Tenoner, an FS 520 Class Planer

Thicknesser, a Sandya 5S Wide Belt Sander

and a Tecnomax S600P Band Saw. A week

later, an SCM Pratix Z2 CNC Machining

Centre was demonstrated and ordered on

SCM's stand at the W10 Exhibition at the

NEC.

Carl Chambers commented: "We were

very pleased with our visit to the SCM

Group factories in Rimini and we could see

at first hand their excellent manufacturing

facilities including CNC Machining

Centres, Foundry and Assembly Lines.

Placing an order for a number of machines

made us confident that we were putting our

faith in a substantial company that would

supply, install and look after our machines

after a considerable investment in our new

factory unit in Salisbury."

The L'Invincible SI 6000 is a top of the

range panel saw and has blade tilting and a

3200 x 3200mm squaring capacity, with a

generous 140mm cutting height. Fitted

with the "Vanguard" control system and

Windows XP, all on an overhead control

panel, direct control of the main and

scoring saw lifting, tilting, blade rotation

speed (an inverter fitted) with a 999

program capacity of the controlled axes.

Programming of sequential cuts within a

program is possible and full graphic

assistance for the operator is included.

A controlled axis programmable parallel

fence with 1500mm capacity sliding on 2

THK guides at a speed up to 25metres/min.

is included. A full support mobile frame

enables angular cutting with micro

adjustment with an LCD readout display.

The squaring fence has 3 LCD readouts for

the stop positions using wireless

technology. Electronic scoring saw

adjustment using motor powered

adjustment of both the horizontal and

vertical positions was specified.

The TI 155 EP Class Spindle Moulder

with tilting spindle and HSK 63 rapid tool

changer, has the "Easy" electronic control

system installed with an overhead panel for

controlling 2 to 8 axes, with a 300 program

storage capacity, enabling lifting and tilting

of the spindle to be carried out simply and

fast. The "Flex" fence control provides

automatic adjustments of the entire fence

with reference to the tool diameter and the

infeed fence for the removal of the required

amount of timber.

Aluminium fences combined with the

"Fast" section table with automatic

adjustment managed from the "Easy"

controller and an inverter for spindle

speeds of 900 to 12,000rpm, reverse

spindle rotation, a glazing bead unit and

the HSK 63 rapid tool change system,

ensures the TI 155 EP Class is fully fitted

with all the devices to provide fast and

simple programming for the operators

between the variety of jobs that will be

undertaken at In-Excess.

The Sandya 5-S Wide Belt Sander, with

1350mm working width, has 2 rollers, 140

and 220mm diameter, each with its own 15

HP motor, the first roller with SCM's

helicoidal grooved steel roller for maximum

stock removal. Electronic positioning of the

work table, with on/off pneumatic selector

for each roller, again ensures rapid setting

up between jobs.

The TEN 220 Class Tenoner has ISO 40

rapid tool change system fitted, providing a

350mm maximum tool diameter with a 7.5

KW motor. The saw unit carries a 400mm

diameter blade, 3 KW motor and has a

revolver with 5 stops. The rotating chip

breaker has capacity for 5 profiles. A push

button provides locking and

unlocking on the carriage for

the pneumatic presser.

The Pratix Z2 - 27 CNC

Machining Centre has a 2750 x

1300mm working area and a 7.5

KW Routing Head with both a

Rapid 8 Automatic Tool

Changer and a TR 10 Rack Tool

Changer, and with a vectorial

speed of 60metres/min..

Manufacturing MDF kitchen

doors, ready to paint, radiator

panels and back panels will be

carried out as In-Excess can also

supply handles, hinges and

associated products from their

own retail outlets. The machine

has the capability of Nesting

panels and doors from a full-

size sheet using the aluminium

multi-functional work table and

high volume vacuum system.

Joinery Shop Manager, John

O'Neill, is very pleased with all

the new SCM machines

installed, commenting: "The

machines, especially the spindle moulder

and panel saw, are very easy and fast to set

up using their CNC controls, so we can

move from one job to the next in no time at

all, as programs can be re-called or

amended within seconds."

The new 3,000 square foot factory is in a

new unit on the In-Excess site and

headquarters just outside Salisbury and has

a new dust extraction system fitted and a

power up-grade installed for all the new

machines.

Carl Chambers concluded: "We are very

pleased with our investment in SCM

machinery and the service and back-up

provided by Mike Martin and SCM UK. The

machines are all high specification for fast

set-up times between jobs, and therefore we

are in a great position to take full advantage

of the up-turn in the market when it

arrives."

Schattdecor is in line with trends –

and one of these is the search for

continuity in times as turbulent as at

present. Accordingly, "continuity in

changing times" is the theme of the

company's showing at the upcoming

ZOW in Bad Salzuflen, where it will be

putting new decors and foil products

on display at booth A1 in hall 22.2 this

February.

The motto "continuity in changing times"

also refers to Schattdecor's Pure Essence,

Tomorrow's Souvenir and Industrial

Heritage trend themes, which it is

continuing into the new season. New colour

worlds, a new style and form idiom have

emerged in the past year, lending the styles a

new signature look. All three – each

reflecting an enduring interest in old

traditions, values and craftsmanship – will

be merging and converging to an increasing

extent in 2012/13.

pure Essencepure ESSENCE offers simplicity,

functionality and concentration on essentials,

plus a concern with sustainability, quality and

fine materials. The result is a pure, modern

aesthetic.

A mix of filigree elements and heavy forms

is becoming more apparent, with clear lines

and fine surfaces create a light and aesthetic

effect in this timeless look.

A sheer diversity of materials is much in

evidence. Surfaces that make a natural or lively

impression play a role, with straightgrain pine,

ash, elm and subtly rustic inter-pretations of

oak predominating. The look of natural stone

remains an important at-tribute of the style.

The colour concept in pure ESSENCE is

as reticent as the muted materials, offering

fine, subtle hues in taupe, mud and greyish-

brown. White and light grey underscore the

subtly sensual style, with greyish powdered

pastels setting accentuation in the

harmonious colour palette.

SolinoThanks to its subtle variegation, this stone

reproduction has a natural 3D effect. This

makes it particularly authentic in impression,

plus its balanced hues suit it to a wide range of

colourways. Offering contrasts typical of stone,

Solino is an attractive decor for worktops, wall

panels and cabinet sides and fronts.

Tomorrow's SouvenirTomorrow's Souvenir shows that the

influence of the 50s and 60s is becoming

more prevalent in new contemporary design,

and has finally arrived in newly expressed

form in home furnishings.

The result is a style marked by

developments in the modern interpretations

that have determined the trend so far, as

particularly apparent in individual furniture.

Small idiosyncratic side tables in unusual

and elegant long cathedrals. Oak is a top trend

theme this year, and the attractive grain of the

decor suits it for a wide range of applications.

Industrial HeritageIndustrial Heritage comes in an

accomplished mix of craftsmanship, tradition

and modern design.

Clear modern architecture sets the stage for

the industrial character of the theme, in which

antiques, treasured collector's items and worn-

looking surfaces form attractive contrasts and

make for a more homely atmosphere.

Old and roughly-worked items no longer

characterize the style alone. Contemporary

materials and items with traces of machining

and visible fittings are increasingly de-

termining the particular appeal of the trend, as

exemplified by rough-hewn workta-bles in

stark contrast to upmarket brushed steel

accessories.

Lively, irregularly-textured surfaces typify

Industrial Heritage. Decors offering authen-tic

vintage character and a slightly used look play

an instrumental role, with repro-ductions of

oak, ash and rough natural stone

predominating. Patterns reminiscent of arts and

crafts techniques lend a certain artisan charm.

Dark woodgrain hues, black and sombre

browns are much in evidence, contrasted by

dark shimming blue and the industrial,

metallic hues of iron and copper. Neon red

accents punctuate the technical atmosphere of

this theme.

Verzasca OakOccasional small knots add to the rustic

look of this narrow-planked furniture decor.

Along with the finely-pored oak texture, the

lively swirls of the figuring underscore this

impression still further.

The Industrial Heritage theme is further

epitomised by Avalon Pine.

This extremely rustic pine decor is lively in

effect thanks to details as varied as small

knots, fine cracks, traces of wear and mirrored

figure markings. The fairly broad planks make

an impression of solid wood and result in an

expansive feel.

At the 2012 ZOW, the market leader in pre-

impregnated finish foil will also be show-

casing Nancy Elm and Sonoma Oak from its

foil collection in new trend colourways.

Sonoma Oak in particular stands poised to

play a determining role in the 2012 decor year.

New, highly creative digital ink-jet decors

from the 'digital VISIONS by Schattdecor'

collection will be rounding off the decor

printer's showing at the upcoming ZOW.

As the year comes to a close, Schattdecor

reports full order books thanks to the growing

number of engineered wood and laminate

industry customers that are turn-ing to its

design and technical expertise for unique and

highly distinctive decor pa-pers and surface

treatments.

The materials used for furniture and

interior design must become more

flexible. In this context, decoration is

paramount. For this reason, Westag &

Getalit AG shall present, at its

exhibition booth, new decorating ideas

for the “GetaCore” solid surface and

further demonstrates how materials

can be customised using digital

printing techniques. In addition to

direct digital printing, HPL digital

printing enjoys special attention. The

way in which printed motifs can be

used in the field of printed furniture

production is demonstrated through

the four pieces of furniture with

innovative design, manufactured as

part of a partnership project, which

are displayed in a special exhibition

space.

In addition to the new decorating styles

and possibilities offered by the digital

printing techniques, Westag & Getalit AG

will also reveal, at the ZOW to be held in

February, an absolute novelty related to the

HPL “GetaLit” stratified material. The

manufacturer demonstrates, at its booth,

how the material can be improved, allowing

for future new accents in the furniture

manufacture sector, as well as in that of

interior design. With these new

achievements, after pioneering the HPL

digital printing field, the manufacturer

demonstrates, for the second time, its

leading position in setting trends, as far as

material evolution is concerned.

Another novelty is the presentation

concept. A stand with a very open layout,

with many communication facilities, invites

visitors to get informed on current news

and join the dialogue.

Continuing along the innovative lines

on which the company was founded,

David Clouting Ltd has announced the

launch of its latest Decofoil designs.

Grey Odessa Oak (UYJ01-Q3M) and

African Walnut (YO203-03M) are the latest

results of the company's long-term and

highly productive relationship with LG

Hausys.

As is always the case with the company's

product launches, the new designs will be

supported with complementary products to

ensure manufacturers and interior

designers can achieve the optimum end

result.

The two Decofoils will each have

matching edge banding, in both PVC and

melamine edging, to provide all-round

continuity in appearance.

Further to this, matching MFC and MDF

panels will also be available for both

African Walnut and Grey Odessa Oak.

The MFC and MDF panels can both be

sourced from Kronospan, which has

introduced these designs into its Fresh 2

range.

Further choice is available within the

Grey Odessa Oak range, as this additionally

includes a cross-cut saw pattern (UYJ01-

T3M) in Decofoil.

Both designs offer the ideal solution for

those seeking authentic woodgrain effects,

which continue to represent the height of

fashion, while conforming to the

increasingly essential element of minimal

environmental impact.

"We're continuing to update our ranges

on a regular basis to provide innovation and

ensure we're at the leading edge of

developing trends," says Edward Quant,

David Clouting Ltd Commercial Director.

"Grey Odessa Oak and African Walnut

are the latest in a long line of new

developments introduced in recent years."

The business has enjoyed a close

relationship with Korean conglomerate LG

for over 10 years, which Mike Clouting,

David Clouting Ltd Managing Director,

states will continue to provide benefits for

customers:

"Our latest launches again perfectly

match trends and will provide our

customers with the competitive edge they

need to stay ahead of the competition. Our

association with LG means we are able to

lead with the latest trends while offering

customers the most competitive prices to

ensure they maintain optimum profit

margins."

CASE STUDY

The Haven project in Horning,

Norfolk, is the perfect example of the

increasing trend for greener building.

The new house and boathouse is a

gracefully designed, sustainable

replacement to the previous designs,

perfectly complementing and

enhancing the picturesque waterside

village of Horning. Due to the

extremely challenging high flood and

moisture area of the Norfolk Broads,

only Accoya wood would have the

necessary long-lasting durability to

meet the demands of the project.

A unique designThe Accoya wood, supplied by

International Timber ltd, was used for

cladding decking and screening. Architects,

Lambert, Scott and Innes modernised the

design by creating a unique, curved, glue

laminated rear screen; this was influenced

by the marine character of Norfolk and is

designed to resemble a traditional wooden

boat construction. The Accoya screen was

made in The Netherlands and was

manufactured by Newham & Abel Ltd. It

was coated with merbau – coloured

Woodguard coating; the same finish was

used for the cladding.

The entrance floor of the house is set at

1.3m above ground in order to avoid the

flooding that is often prevalent in the area.

Accoya wood is the only timber able to face

the challenge of being exposed to such

conditions without shrinkage and reduced

performance. Accoya has been proven to

outperform even the best tropical woods in

these respects.

The distinctive boathouse, also covered in

sustainable Accoya wood, is a fantastic

addition to this riverside property. It is

purposely designed to be set above the

water level, allowing any flood water to flow

safely through its base. It is a perfect and

secure place to store a boat in any weather

conditions.

An Eco-friendly buildingThe house is 60% more

efficient than the current

building regulations and

achieves Level 4 of the Code for

Sustainable Homes for Energy.

The construction has a ground

source heat pump producing

9.7kw; this pre-heats the water

and underfloor heating

installations for even more

energy savings. The power for

the house is gained from the

Photo Voltaic Cells that provide

1.8kw of electricity, which is enough for the

general running of the house. A

distinctively designed green roof uses green

sedum to further decrease the risk of

flooding. The sedum absorbs rainwater

reducing the amount that will fall to the

ground. It also promotes biodiversity by

providing a suitable habitat for wildlife.

The Haven project demonstrates the

versatility and extreme durability of Accoya,

especially in such unconventional

conditions. The beauty and flexibility of

Accoya wood make this unique design both

practical and graceful.
