In Budget 2016 the age of eligibility for the Old Age Security (OAS) pension and the Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS) has been lowered from 67 to 65. This change will put up to $17,000 into the pockets of the lowest income Canadians each year, as they become seniors. Additional measures announced to help seniors are:

increasing the GIS top-up by $947 annually for the most vulnerable single seniors, starting in July 2016. Single seniors with annual income (other than Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income Supplement benefits) of about $4,600 or less will receive the full increase of $947. Above this income threshold, the amount of the increased benefit will be gradually reduced and will be completely phased out at an income level of about $8,400. Benefits will be adjusted quarterly with increases in the cost of living;

providing higher benefits to senior couples receiving GIS and Allowance benefits and who are living apart for reasons beyond their control (such as a requirement for long-term care);

looking at how a new Seniors Price Index that reflects the cost of living faced by seniors could be developed; and

providing for the construction, repair and adaption of affordable housing to help the many seniors who face challenges in accessing affordable housing.

Elder Abuse Exists because of Silence

June 15h is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. This day is set aside around the world to bring awareness that elder abuse exists, and what can be done about it. The time has come to bring this secret into the open. Elder Abuse takes

many forms and can exist in one or more forms: financial abuse; psychological or emotional abuse; physical abuse; sexual assault; neglect; misuse of medication; or violation of human rights. Current studies are showing that perhaps up to 10% of all Alberta Seniors could experience elder abuse! Elder Abuse is hidden and tragic. Often the older adult is afraid to speak up because of: fear, shame, guilt, fear of repercussions, love for the abuser, lack of understanding about abuse,

lack of awareness of the existence of Community Supports, and/or the belief that abuse is normal. All these are barriers to seeking help, and revealing abuse. What to do if you are being abused:

1) Start by calling the Police if you are in danger. 2) If you are in immediate danger leave the situation and go to a safe place. If you are unable to leave call

911. 3) Confide in someone you trust, such as your doctor or friend. 4) Keep a record which will help you document the abuse.

Most important of all is to never BLAME YOURSELF. Realize that HELP IS AVAILABLE and do not be afraid to ask for help. No one deserves to be abused. There are resources in the Community to help protect everyone’s rights, safety and dignity. Where to go for information or help: Call FCSS at 780-980-7109 for resource information. Call the provincial Family Violence Information Line toll free at 310 –1818 for resource information . This is a 24

hour toll free number, available 7 days a week. Safeguards for Vulnerable Adults Information and Reporting Line: 1-888-357-9339 toll-free . Call the Senior’s Abuse Hotline at: 780-454-8888 - 24 hours. Call the Elder Abuse Intervention Team at: 780-477-2929. Go to: Alberta Elder Abuse Awareness Network or Alberta Seniors Elder Abuse Awareness for further information.

Purple is the colour of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. Everyone can help us recognize the day by wearing purple

and talking to friends and neighbours about this important community issue.

A little boy's mother decides that it's time her 10-year-old son has a savings account so that she can teach him the value of saving. The two of them go to the bank together. When they get there, the mother says, "It's your account, so you fill out the application." The boy is doing just fine until he comes to the space for Name of

your former bank. He pauses to think, then scribbles, "Piggy."

JOKE

The fourth-grade teacher had to leave the room for a few minutes. When she returned, she found the children in

perfect order. Everybody was sitting absolutely quiet. She was shocked and stunned and said, "I've never seen

anything like it before. This is wonderful. Please tell me, what came over all of you? Why are you so well behaved and

quiet?"

Finally, after much urging, little Sally spoke up and said, "Well, one time you said that if you ever came

back and found us quiet, you would drop dead."

PANORAMA for May & June 2016

May is: High Blood Pressure Control Month Hypertension is often called: “the Silent Killer”. More than 1/2 of all individuals who have high blood pressure do

not know that they are affected. It is estimated that approximately 1 out of every 5 Canadian adults (or about 19% of

the total adult population) may have high blood pressure.

High Blood Pressure often has no warning signs or symptoms, but nevertheless it can damage your

health, and may ultimately cause a heart attack or stroke. Everyone should work to keep their blood

pressure in check.

“Make control your goal.” Awareness and treatment are only part of the solution. Often those who are receiving

treatment still have blood pressure which is higher than it should be. Try to take control of your high blood pressure

by setting some goals and making some lifestyle changes:

Know what your blood pressure should be and set that as your goal. Discuss with your doctor.

Have your blood pressure taken frequently.

Take your blood pressure medication exactly as directed. Discuss how to take your

medication with your pharmacist or doctor.

Quit smoking.

Reduce the amount of sodium in your diet.

Maintain a healthy body weight.

Participate in at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity most days of the week.

Eat a healthy diet - lots of fruit and vegetables and reduce the amount of saturated fat in your diet.

Manage your stress.

Limit the amount of alcohol you drink.

Start living a heart-healthier life now!

OLD WOMAN IN THE MIRROR by: Joselyn Henry Thorn

Old woman in the mirror where did you come from?

I’m you but you think you’re still young.

The brain as sharp as a tack Sometimes doesn’t know where it is at.

The eyes as clear as an eagle’s

Now can’t even thread a needle.

The baggy eyelids and jowls too Once a complexion as fresh as dew.

The heart that beat steady and free Needs pills to make it go, you see.

The teeth pearly and white

Have to be put to soak each night.

The beautiful hair, the shining glory Now is all white from pain and worry.

The legs as swift as a gazelles Don’t move or work so well.

The fingers that gave pleasure and caressed

Are bent and stiff, you must confess.

I still have dreams and things to do. Go away old woman, I don’t have time for you.
