responsibilities to uphold and expectations to meet, such as maintaining the integrity of our fleet.

If any of your staff drives a government vehicle, please personally reinforce with them the importance of driving safely.Remind drivers to slow down (don’t rush), use a spotter, and conduct a walk around before driving. In other words, drive agovernment vehicle as if it were your personal vehicle.

To further raise awareness on driving safety, please post or distribute the attached pages in the Weekly Bulletin. Thanks forhelping us to address this issue. - Gail

Note from Business operations: Sue Pankowski

In lieu of my monthly admonition to spend wisely due to our continuing budget uncertainty, I offer you a variety ofreminders/requests/notifications…

Annual Asset Validation—In March of each year, employees are asked to review a list of assets assigned to them in order to acknowledge thatthe assets are in their possession and verify that the data for each asset is correct. This process is automated via an email link generated byPeopleSoft. Please be attentive and respond when you see the request, and enter April Spencer as your AD Property Rep. Please reach out toApril at ext. 8732 should you have any questions.

Update Your Timecards—All employees are expected to update their timecard at least once per week, or more frequently if necessary. Questions on timecard preparation can be addressed to Karen Cestra at ext. 4586.

Webreqs—Steve Bubka is our department expert when it comes to expediting webreqs, work orders, and RFQ’s. Please remember to copy Steveand he will ensure it gets properly routed for department approvals.

Proposals—If you’re a PI considering a proposal for new funding of any type (including DOE FOA’s, sub-contracted SBIR’s, or unsolicitedthird party proposals), please remember to prepare your Prep. and Risk Questionnaire (aka PaRQ form) early in the process! Submission of the online questionnaire alertsmanagement, business operations, ES&H, and the strategic partnership office of your intent to apply for new business. It’s also reviewed by DOE’s site office.

The RHIC 4K cool-down started as planned on 6 February 2017, and beam operation will begin soon. The injectors and RHIC are ready. Thechallenge in this year's RHIC run will be to provide flat, or levelled, luminosity with proton beams. Unlike ions protons cannot be cooled and werely on good lifetime by choosing appropriate parameters, or have to adjust the beam size at the collision point after some time at store.Installations in IR2 for CeC PoP and LEReC are also coming to an end, with some work continuing in the next week.

Note from our Experimental Support & Facilities Division: Bill Christie

The cryogenic cooldown of the collider started on February 6th as scheduled. This was followed a few days later by an event not on theschedule, but which I've heard joked we can almost count on, which was the blizzard that closed the Lab and mucked up the schedule a littlebit.

Despite all of this, the collider commissioning is in full swing, and the current expectation is that collisions will get provided to STAR onSunday, February 19th, so the timing, tuning and setup of the detector can get started.

STAR has been on 24 hour shifts for about three and a half weeks already, using the time to run the detector with cosmic ray triggers andwork its way through all the typical bugs and issues to get ready for efficient operation. This exercise has gone as expected, and the detectoris ready to make use of these collisions as soon as they become available.

Note from Operations: Paul Sampson

RHIC startup began with the 4K cold wave on February 6th.First beams in the collider are expected February 8th. LEReC and CeC PoP installation will continue behind access and on MaintenanceDays. In RHIC sector 3 & 4, the new 9MHz RF cavities are being tested and commissioned. Startup of the remaining RHIC RF systemsis under way. Shutdown work at STAR and PHENIX has concluded.

Setup for polarized proton running is underway in the injectors. Good progress is being made.

LINAC continues to run for BLIP and polarized setup.

There will be a 5 hour scheduled maintenance on February 8th for the injectors.

The “RHIC Broadcast” link displays the latest schedules for testing, power disruptions, outages and daily schedules. To view a list of approved work for the Shutdown or to review past results, go to the Job Request System and select the appropriate date. Note from our MEDICAL ISOTOPE RESEARCH & PRODUCTION PROGRAM: Cathy Cutler

Most of you noticed last Thursday we had a huge snowstorm that resulted in the Lab being closed for the day. As luck would have it one of ourcustomers had a generator failure and needed an emergency shipment of Sr-82. We had plenty of material to fill the order and hoped that Fridaywould present us with a better day than Thursday to dispense and prepare the shipment and hand off to FedEx. I contacted Paul Sampson as weneeded clearance for the packaging and transportation group as well as the RadCon group to come in. Nick Contos was contacted as the FacilityRep to determine who and what would be needed to assist in the dispensing and packaging. Friday came and the lab was again closed as theywere unable to complete all the plowing. Paul was able to gain us access and Lisa came in to get the sample prepared for shipping. I want tothank all of those who came in and helped us get the emergency shipment out the door. Lisa Muench for dispensing, Pat Sullivan for theRadCon work, Cathy Connor and Steve Woodburn from packaging and transportation and Jason Nalepa who helped dig out the truck so wecould transport the package to the front gate to FedEx. Thanks to Paul for gaining us access and keeping the back plowed so we could get thesample out. The DOE isotope program wanted to thank all for helping us get this emergency shipment out.
