The RHIC run 17 is under way and progressing quite well. An initial scare of a possible faulty superconducting helical magnet in one of the fourRHIC Siberian snakes turned out to be due to a bad electrical connection that could easily be fixed.

During this run we will also be commissioning the electron beams for the Coherent electron Cooling (CeC) experiment for the Low EnergyRHIC electron Cooling (LEReC) project. Both of these installations are in the 2 o'clock interaction regions. Recently the 5-cell superconducting704 MHz cavity, the main accelerating cavity for CeC, was tested after being removed, cleaned, reassembled and reinstalled. The cavity nowperforms very well. Congratulations to the SRF team!

Note from Business operations: Sue Pankowski

In lieu of my monthly admonition to spend wisely due to our continuing budget uncertainty, I offer you a variety ofreminders/requests/notifications…

Annual Asset Validation—In March of each year, employees are asked to review a list of assets assigned to them in order to acknowledge thatthe assets are in their possession and verify that the data for each asset is correct. This process is automated via an email link generated byPeopleSoft. Please be attentive and respond when you see the request, and enter April Spencer as your AD Property Rep. Please reach out toApril at ext. 8732 should you have any questions.

Update Your Timecards—All employees are expected to update their timecard at least once per week, or more frequently if necessary. Questions on timecard preparation can be addressed to Karen Cestra at ext. 4586.

Webreqs—Steve Bubka is our department expert when it comes to expediting webreqs, work orders, and RFQ’s. Please remember to copy Steveand he will ensure it gets properly routed for department approvals.

Proposals—If you’re a PI considering a proposal for new funding of any type (including DOE FOA’s, sub-contracted SBIR’s, or unsolicitedthird party proposals), please remember to prepare your Prep. and Risk Questionnaire (aka PaRQ form) early in the process! Submission of the online questionnaire alertsmanagement, business operations, ES&H, and the strategic partnership office of your intent to apply for new business. It’s also reviewed by DOE’s site office.

Note from our Accelerator Division: Wolfram Fischer

The RHIC Run-17 is now under way. We went into physics mode on Friday, 17 February 2017, after a record setup time with beam of 12 days. In2013, the last time we ran polarized protons at 255 GeV this took 21 days. Congratulations to Vahid Ranjbar, the Run Coordinator, Travis Shrey, who organized the setup, and the entire team.

Two new 9 MHz cavities were commissioned and are not in operation, for which Sal Polizzo was the lead engineer. We have now almost reachedthe maximum luminosity for STAR, and the main effort will be to make the luminosity flat, and have the highest possible polarization. AnatoliZelenski's polarized beam source, due to an improvement in the ion optical system, now delivers 20% more beam. This is the result of a continuingcollaboration with BINP in Novosibirsk.

Meanwhile there are many activities in IR2. The superconducting gun and booster cavity for the Coherent electron Cooling Proof of Principle(CeC PoP) are cold and being conditioned with RF and the Low Energy RHIC electron Cooling (LEReC) DC gun beam line is being prepared forbeam operation. This still requires more than usual access time.

Recent progress and success for the Crab Cavity Development Groupby Ilan Ben-Zvi

Crab cavities are a critical element for achieving high luminosity in colliders like the LHC high luminosity upgrade or the Electron Ion Collider.Over the past 6 months, the members of the Crab Cavity Development Group made significant progress in the development of 400 MHz DoubleQuarter Wave crab cavities, designed by the group. The work has been carried out in tight collaboration with a US manufacturer, Jefferson Lab(Jlab), and CERN. Group members travelled with the cavities to the various action sites, and kept daily communications with the differentnodes of the LHC crab cavity network. The pay back for this hard work has been record performance, attained in cold test from twoindependently produced cavities in rapid succession. The cold test (superconducting) results of both cavities achieved a maximum deflectingvoltage above 5 MV (5.2 MV at CERN and 5.8 MV at Jlab), which well exceeds the requirement of 3.4 MV from HiLumi LHC program. Bothcavities also reached a surface resistivity of 10 nOhm, the CERN specified value. The two cavities were manufactures from different stock niobium metal, post processed in two separate facilities and independently cold testedin two locations. One cavity was produced by the DOE LARP program and the other one by CERN. The BNL team has been deeply involved

all along the way. In terms of schedule, the first cold test at CERN was completed within 1 year from the purchasing of the niobium stalk. The achievement of this quickfabrication time and superb cold test results attest the excellence of the BNL group's design of the Double Quarter Wave the crab cavity.

The next step for the LHC crab cavity project will be cold test of the cavity with higher order mode coupler. Our group also started preliminary studies of the eRHIC crabcavity design, which has a similar frequency and less spacial constrains.

This photo shows the final clean room assembly of the Double Quarter Wave Crab Cavity at CERN.

Note from our MEDICAL ISOTOPE RESEARCH & PRODUCTION PROGRAM: Cathy Cutler

The next couple of months are going to offer many opportunities for the MIRP group to showcase what we do and what we can do. We arehaving our Science and Technology Review on the 28th and 29th of March. Although the group has had many of these, this is actually the firstI've experienced since being at BNL. I think we have a good story to tell as during the past two years we successfully installed the raster aheadof schedule and under budget. Further we successfully completed the Linac phase I intensity upgrade. This enabled us to produce 50% more Sr-82 last year and the extra supply allowed filling emergency orders last year when others weren't able to supply. Our research output has growndue to the presence of two postdocs; as well as increased presence of students and collaborations with outside researchers. We underwent asurprise FDA inspection successfully and planned internal and customer audits.

In addition to the S&T review we are having a round robin to assess what it would take at BNL, ORNL and LANL to bring up facilities forprocessing Ac-225. We have two plans that we have generated to facilitate additional processing at 801. One would refurbish the now defuncthot cells originally used for metallurgical analysis of HFBR components and reactor fuel research but have sat idle for years. Refurbishmentwould offer the MIRP the ability to add production lines that would have minimal impact on ongoing current activities. It would not only meetcurrent expected demands but possible future demands in high activity production. A second upgrade that has been evaluated is modifyingbuilding 801 room 2-66 C to allow for a GMP production line. This upgrade would enable a production line that is isolated from the TPL andwould free up space for more research or additional production in the TPL.

All of these efforts are to facilitate growth of the MIRP program in the research and development of radioisotopes for clinical applications. Further to increase our effortsin work force development. BNL is uniquely located close to many of the largest and best universities in the country. Our flexibility in operations allows us to conductresearch and training that is not possible at other universities or national labs.

Finally we have our overall DOE Isotope program strategic planning meeting in April. We are in the process of completing our materials for all these reviews and have orwill be calling on many of you for assistance. We thank you in advance for providing such a good story for these reviews and helping us to plan for our future growth.
