Since 2001, the commercialisation activities of the small, dedicated team at the Office of Industry and Innovation (OII) have assisted UWA’s researchers to partner with industry, investors and other organisations. Essentially, OII facilitates partnerships between industry and UWA research teams to package ideas and technologies developed at UWA into products and solutions that make an impact in the global marketplace.

Partnering made easy

Your investment in R&D matters

Contact us to discuss consulting, Ì

collaborative research and investing in commercialisation opportunities.

From consulting services to collaborative research, and from licences and options to the formation of start-up companies, OII has facilitated hundreds of partnerships and helped leverage over $50 million of research funding.

If you are interested in commercialising early-stage technologies, have an industrial problem that requires specialist research and development expertise, or if you would like to develop a joint research arrangement with any area of the University, the Office of Industry and Innovation is ready to help.

Consult the experts

Every year The University of Western Australia receives over $170 million of research funding, with about one third awarded by Australia’s main competitive funding bodies, the Australian Research Council (ARC) and the National Health and Medical Research Council.

UWA has more than 1000 academic staff, many of whom are internationally-respected experts in their fields. From Nobel Prize to Scientist of the Year award winners, our leading researchers have produced inventions and innovations in a number of fields, including biotechnology, engineering, information and communications technology, and the resource sectors.

UWA researchers are keen to use their research strengths and expertise by engaging with industry, business and government sectors on collaborative projects that require expert services.

If you have a collaboration opportunity or require a consultant or expert to assist with your next venture, and would like to know who to approach at UWA, the Office of Industry and Innovation can connect you with the right people.

Invest

UWA’s pursuit of excellence has led to many successful commercial ventures. The following examples showcase some recent successes that are making a global impact.

Go global

A key factor in this process is the establishment and maintenance of successful relationships with industry and business partners.

The staff at OII have extensive industry experience and are skilled in facilitating the formation of start-up companies and licensing technologies.

Our portfolio of investor-ready research and development projects include:

biotechnology and biomedical Ì

physical sciences Ì

nanotechnology and green Ì

chemistrysoftware solutions Ì

Visit oii.uwa.edu.au for more details on these commercial opportunities.

Access our intellectual capital

iCeutica IncBacked by OII patenting, funding and licensing support, an early stage UWA nanotechnology project has achieved global recognition with the recent acquisition of spin-out company iCeutica Inc by its US partner Iroko Pharmaceuticals, a global pharmaceutical leader.

iCeutica’s nano-particle reformulations of pain killers and anti-inflammatory drugs are entering Phase III clinical trials in the US. Nano-sizing the drug particles dramatically improves dissolution, ensuring lower dosages for patients and faster pain relief.

Antaria LtdListed on the ASX since 2005, Antaria Ltd is a sector-leading innovator and manufacturer of advanced nanomaterials and nanomaterial products, with customers around the world.

Resonance HealthListed on the ASX since 2004, Resonance Health develops unique quantitative MRI image analysis technologies for the diagnosis and monitoring of human diseases.

This advanced exploration technology took its first flight onboard a light airplane on 21 August 2010. By measuring changes in the Earth’s gravity field, it allows Rio Tinto to locate remote ore-bodies buried beneath the ground.

Andrew Jenkin General Manager (Technology Transfer), Rio Tinto

“UWA offers facilities that have enabled development of VKI. As well as its long history in gravity gradiometer research, it also has a world-class high precision machining workshop and a liquid helium facility.”

Mike FardonFormer Academic Director, UWA Multimedia Centre and Vice President (Education), Echo360

“The partnership between the Lectopia project team and the Office of Industry and Innovation was a key ingredient to the process.”

Originally invented at UWA and now operating at an accuracy and sensitivity that far outperforms existing technologies, VK1 will help discover minerals in inaccessible locations and expand Rio Tinto’s knowledge of existing mineral resources. VK1 will also provide a much needed mineral data set.

The Office of Industry and Innovation negotiated a research agreement (including commercial terms) in 2005, securing a long and productive relationship with Rio Tinto.

The Lectopia system for recording and broadcasting lectures, used daily by UWA staff and students, was originally developed by the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences for use at UWA. OII recognised the commercial potential of the system and successfully licensed it to numerous institutions in Australia and overseas. In 2007, as part of the commercialisation plan, it was acquired by the US company Echo360 and is now in use in over 200 institutions globally.

Originally made of recycled scrap metal, the cost-effective and high load-bearing HEA Mesh won the 2008 WA Inventor of the Year (Ready for Market) award.

“This mesh will improve mine safety, especially where the ground conditions are rockburst-prone and challenging. I’d like to thank the staff at UWA’s Office of Industry and Innovation and in particular Project Manager Tom Schnepple, for his work in making today’s agreement with DSI a reality.”

Sensear Pty Ltd is a Perth-based electronics company that was established on the back of intellectual property developed jointly by UWA and Curtin University. The Office of Industry and Innovation made the original contact with angel investors, and supported the formation of the company.

The Sensear noise-reduction and hearing safety technology has won numerous awards; products are now being sold internationally into high noise markets such as construction, mining, transport and aviation, and manufacturing.

Sensear Pty Ltd

Roy BarnettFormer Chief Operating Officer, Sensear Pty Ltd

“Sensear is in a global leadership position today due in no small part to the role that UWA’s OII played in our commercialisation phase. Our ongoing relationship with OII provides us with continuing support and a strong professional interaction that will be part of the Sensear story for many years to come.”

This product tackles safety issues associated with deep, high-stress and mechanised mining, an industry that is integral to both State and national economies and demonstrates UWA’s ability to produce solutions for local industries.

The Office of Industry and Innovation is managing UWA’s license agreement with DYWIDAG-Systems International (DSI) to further commercialise HEA Mesh internationally.
