S Dear Members, Do you think that it is really SPRING? We have had some lovely weather and in between some not so nice weather. I had the pleasure today to get out and paint En Plein Aire. The weather was delightful and I had a great day of painting. It was a very enjoyable day. Whether you paint in your studio or in the open air, the hours spent before your easel can bring satisfaction and sometimes frustration. Always know that you are not alone. As I was reading the latest edition of PleinAir Magazine, I happened on the Publisher’s Letter. Much of what he said in this letter was very good advice. He talked about the “Journey”. We as artists are definitely on a journey. What matters most is not the outcome of each painting, but what has been gained by the act of painting. So, the next time you feel that what you are working on is a failure, just put a different spin on the outcome. Each time you take that journey you may discover that you have learned something and just the experience of painting will take you to another part of that journey. The exhibits for this year are approaching, as well as the “Afternoon with Richard McKinley” special event. It seems that we have been waiting for this a long time and now it is just a month away. I do hope that all of our members will consider taking part in this very special time as Richard demonstrates his techniques and takes time to answer your questions. As always, I would like to thank the Executive Board for their time volunteering for this wonderful Pastel Society which keeps the PSNJ a forerunner in the Art World. As you lose yourself in the world of these colorful sticks that create magic when applied to a surface, always remember your journey and where it may take you. I will look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events and that you have an enjoyable summer filled with happy moments of painting. Dear Members,

Do you think that it is really SPRING? We have had some lovely weather and in between some not so nice weather. I had the pleasure today to get out and paint En

Plein Aire. The Spring Members Meeting was held on April 13, 2014 at the Montville Senior House, Montville, NJ. Louise

Woodcox, President, opened the meeting by thanking the Board members for the hard work they do on behalf of the

PSNJ and thanking Laurie Harden and Bernadette de Cecere for the hospitality arrangements. Louise mentioned

that it is the 9th

year for the PSNJ, and also thanked the early and Charter Members for the work they did to establish

the organization. She made a plea for volunteers, who are needed to keep the PSNJ a growing and vital

organization.

Anita Gladstone, Recording Secretary presented the issue of the revisions to the By-Laws that were previously sent

to the members for review, which were then passed. Anita discussed those positions that were up for election in

October: President, 1st Vice-President, Corresponding Secretary, Programs Director, and Newsletter Editor, along

with the currently vacant position of Publicity Coordinator. The Board Reports followed, starting with 1st Vice

President, reported by Louise Woodcox, stating that there are currently 157 active paid members with 16 NJ

counties represented, and 5 states. This includes 67 Signature members. There are 34 patrons, 7 patron level 2, and

one patron level 3. Donna Cota, Co-Chair Exhibitions, reported on the now currently running Member’s Exhibition

and Signature Members Exhibition, and the upcoming Juried Exhibition, which will be held November 2-November

28 at Cranes Mill Towne Square Gallery. Dana Abel, Treasurer, not present, was reported on by Louise, stating our

financial statistics. Michal Barkai, Corresponding Secretary, reported that she sent out condolence cards to members

as well as a thank you and donation to the Montville Library for the use of the meeting room for the past two years.

Michal, who is also filling in as the Publicity Coordinator, mentioned that we are using email and the web more,

including Facebook, to publicize our events. She encouraged the members to “like” the Facebook page and to also

sign up for the PSNJ blog on the website. She also suggested that we all forward emails about our events to friends

and acquaintances who might be interested. Carol Thurlow, Newsletter Editor, reported on the deadline and

reminded members to photograph their entries to shows. Annette Lange, webmaster, reported that the website is

currently up to date. Judy Leeds, Program Director, reminded us of the Richard McKinley demonstration and asked

for volunteers to help with that event. Before Judy introduced Burt Silverman, she thanked Annette Hanna for

chauffeuring Burt Silverman from New York and Bob McBride for his help with the audio-visual equipment used

for the demonstration

We were then treated to a demonstration by Burt Silverman. All during his painting demo, Burt gave us little gems

of philosophy. He stated that pastels are a fusion, like drawing in color. He started by mentioning some highlights

of the history of portraiture and how it changed through the years, starting with the classic dark background with

light figure until Picasso came along and changed everything. He stated that to paint a portrait, it is much better to

have a live model where, as the sitting progresses, the artist builds up a relationship with the subject and there are

nuances between the painter and the model. The artist captures the essence of a person as you go through time

together, unlike a camera which only captures an instant. As he painted he explained his thought processes, and

showed us how “light dramatizes the event.” Using Yarka pastels, he worked on the face of the model Alex

Piccirillo, then scarf, and back to face, explaining how changes in value allow you to make what you want to stand

out. I found his most interesting comment was his question of why we would want to see a still image in this age of

electronics and fast moving images. And his answer was that art slows down reality and gives us a moment to

contemplate the image, bringing meaning that you might not get from a fast moving image. I am sure everyone

present took away a different piece of his philosophy to remember.

working in pastel. As described by one of our members, “She was just the kindest, loveliest person, and a wonderful

artist.” She had described the painting below from February 2014 called “The Rain

Is Gone” as “a picture made entirely from my imagination of water filled field and

stream in a mountainous locale like the Rocky Mountains.” She had exhibited

locally at the Hickory Museum of Art, Hickory, NC in 2013.
