what is orthodontics? It is the part of dentistry that diagnoses, prevents and treats problems related to dental displacement and structures of the face. Adjustments are made via fixed or removable devices, which are responsible for a force with which the tooth moves. BEFORE AFTER

Is it uncomfortable wearing brackets (braces)? At the beginning of the treatment right after the device be placed, there may be some discomfort, but after a short period our body gets used to the new condition.

Why orthodontic treatment is important?Besides leaving the smile more beautiful, it can fix problems of bad dental occlusion, improving the chewing and phonation.

What is the best age to start orthodontic treatment?

From the age of five may be performed an assessment. And from there you will be given the best time for orthodontic intervention. It's good to remember that the sooner any type of the dental occlusion disorder is diagnosed the higher will be the chances of successful treatment.

How long does it take the treatment (on average)? It is difficult to predict the time of an orthodontic treatment, because this depends on several factors, such as individual biological responses, the kind of dental occlusion disorder, types of devices, and the cooperation of the patient. An average time is 24 to 30 months of active treatment.

What are the types of devices? The Orthodontics works with fixed dental appliances and high quality wires. In some cases, it may be necessary for the patient to use removable devices and intraoral elastics.

Changes in the treatmentThe initial diagnosis is subject to change, since the response of the organism and growth patterns are individuals. These changes may result in extractions of permanent teeth or even a surgical evaluation of the case. Whenever an intermediate reassessment is required, the patient or responsible will be informed at the beginning of the treatment.

What are the main characteristics of the treatment in adults?

The increase of age entails greater difficulty in repairing the tissues. This distinction of metabolism in the various age groups is observed in dental movement, performing in the adult, a slower and more careful treatment.

What is the most suitable type of device for adults: the fixed or removable?Removable appliances is more indicated for young people, since they act mainly repositioning the bones and harmonizing the muscle function. However, in adults, it is necessary to use a device that promotes the fine adjustment of the teeth position, and, in this case, the fixed appliances are the best for being more efficient and safe in handling.

What is not recommended to eat using orthodontic appliance? If you are a careful person, you probably will be able to eat almost any kind of food without causing damage to your appliance. However, some foods should be avoided at all costs: popcorn, chewing gum, sticky candies, corn chips, cashews, peanuts, nuts, ice, corn on the cob, sweet caramel and caramelized candies.

How does the fixed appliance work? The bracket(brace) is fixed to the teeth by a resin, the arc is fixed to brackets by small elastic rings (which may be colored) or thin steel wires. The force that makes your teeth move, happens when the arc, passing bybrackets, generates a different pressure on each of them. This pressure on your teeth that you feel immediately after installation of the device is such a force that will make the initial movement.

When removable devices should be used? The removable devices can be used (after the end of treatment with fixed appliances) as strips, correctives for small dental movements or for the correction of orthopedic changes of the face (mainly bones).

What would be the most aesthetic option for fixed appliances?Today adults patients can count on orthodontic devices quite efficient and almost invisible, as the so-called aesthetic devices. They are fixed appliances made of resin.

Patients with gum disease can also be treated? While periodontal disease is active (inflammation), orthodontic treatment is not indicated. After the problem is stabilized, the orthodontist must carry out a careful evaluation to measure the extent of the damage and indicate the type of device that most fits the case.

Is there any risk in the treatment? When the treatment is well planned and executed by qualified professional, there is no greater risk to the patient, since he follows all given instructions, especially in the aspect of oral hygiene, because debris can cause gum and periodontal problems, white spots or even tooth decay.

Page 10: Patient guide - Clinica Duarte

The importance of flossingContrary to what many think, orthodontic appliances don't cause cavities because they protect covered parts of the teeth. Bacteria and food debris can take advantage and hide in the devices, so the oral hygiene care are very important. Use the floss first and then brush your teeth carefully.

How to brush the teeth?1 - Brush the outer surface of each tooth by placing the brush on the gums, making a circular motion.2 - Brush the inside surface of each tooth in the same way.3 - Brush the chewing surface of each tooth, with back-and-forth movements.

Dental Bleaching Make your teeth whiter and give you a beautiful smile. The dental bleaching occurs through the action of certain substances that cause a process of oxidation on the surface of the teeth. It can be done in the clinic using a professional dental whitening gel, which is activated with a filtered halogen light to accelerate the teeth whitening process in only 30 minutes or it can be done by the patient at his residence with a special gel and a mold adapted and prepared by a dentist.

What are dental implants? Dental implants are metal supports or structuresplaced surgically in the jawbone below thegums. Once placed, they allow the dentist toassemble replacement teeth on them. For being integrated into the bone, implantsoffer a stable support for artificial teeth. Partial dentures and dentures mounted over implantswon't slip or change position in the mouth, agreat benefit during feeding or speech. This security helps the partial dentures and bridges,as well as individual crowns placed on implants, which provide a more natural situation thanconventional bridges or dentures.

Dental Piercing It is the latest aesthetic novelty of dentistry. The product consists of a small jewelry made of Crystal that adheres to the tooth by means of an

adhesive.

In normal situations, these applications can last for several years without accidents. Requires no special care or brushing. If the product is ingested it is usually eliminated by the digestive route. It's so easy to remove as an orthodontic bracket.
