In this issue SAINT MICHAELS MISSION STATEMENTSaint Michaels Catholic Community is a group of Catholic Christians associated w

the Armed Forces under the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the Archdioceses for

Military Services served by the pastoral leadership of our priest(s), deacon(s), and

gious. The community is dedicated to exemplifying Christian community by procla

ing the Good News of Jesus Christ through worship, service, and witness to the pe

of Fort Gordon and surrounding communities.

    Monday & Wednesday: 11:30amSaturday: 5:00pmSunday: 8:30am and 10:00am

    RECONCILIATIONSaturday: 4:00pm-4:45pmSunday: 7:45am-and 9:30am

Spare a thought today for your bishop, parish priest or deacon. Especially if they are called upon to preach to-day's homily. Truth be told, many of our preachers dread being called upon to preach on this central mystery ofour faith. Why is this? Their defence is: 'The Trinity is a mystery and so let's leave it as such.'

They are right, of course - the Blessed Trinity is precisely that, a mystery. But are we simply to leave it atthat? Surely God would want to invite us to enter more deeply into this mystery, which is indeed the mystery thatexplains everything. How true are the Psalmist's words: 'in your light we see light' (Ps. 36:9 NIV). Consider howon earth we see everything in the light of the sun, though we cannot look at this great planet with the naked eye.

Our Christian faith, although sharing many important truths with the other two monotheistic religions, Juda-sm and Islam, departs sharply from them on two fundamental truths. The first is the Incarnation, that God him-

self entered human history in Jesus of Nazareth, born of a virgin, God from God, light from light, true God andtrue man, consubstantial with the Father. The second is that God is three persons in one, Blessed and Holy Trin-ty. The Father is God, the Son is God and the Spirit is God - and God is One. No wonder our clergy retreat from

preaching on this profound mystery, which is the most sublime of sacred truths.St Thomas Aquinas said: 'The divine nature is really and entirely identical with each of the three persons, all

of whom can therefore be called one: I and the Father are one.' So how can we get our heads around the Trinity? It is a good question but the truth is, we can't. We can, however, put our heads into it and immerse our hearts int. For we need a grace of revelation to penetrate into this deep ocean of truth. The Blessed Trinity is first and

foremost a trinity of persons and a community of love. Love is the very essence of the Trinity and it is in loving

God that we enter into this mystery of love. We praise the Father, we adore the Son and we worship theSpirit. Retrieved from http://www.catholic-bible-school.org/reflections-sunday-readings.html

Recently, a question was raised about the propertitle of our community and our pastor. We use thetitle St. Michaels Catholic Community because

canonically we are not an established parish. Our

facilities belong to the U.S. Government. Of coursemy title as Father is always appropriate orthemilitary title of Chaplain. Since we are not a

canonically established parish, I am not a canoni-cally established parish. However, the Archdiocese

of Military Services gives me all the appropriate authority and responsi-bilities to make all necessary decisions. My title as Pastor or actually

Senior Pastor is technically assigned to me by the military. The Reli-

gious Support Office (RSO) assigns to certain chaplains the title ofSenior Pastor with all appropriates duties, rights and privileges. So,

the title of Senior Pastoror Pastor for shortis appropriate for ourmilitary community. However the title of Father is the most important astogether we worship and serve the Lord as a Catholic family of believ-

ers. I hope this clarifies any confusion.

    Yours in Christ,

    Father Joseph P. Lea

Trinity Sunday, also known as Holy Trinity Sunday, is celebrated a week after Pentecost Sunday in honor of the most fundamental of Christian beliebelief in the Holy Trinity. We can never fully understand the mystery of the Trinity, but we can sum it up in the following formula: God is three Persoone Nature. The three Persons of GodFather, Son, and Holy Spiritare all equally God, and They cannot be divided.

As Fr. John Hardon points out in hisModern Catholic Dictionary, the origins of the celebration of Trinity Sunday goes allthey way back to the Arian heresy of the fourth century, when Arius denied the divinity of Christ by denying that there arethree Persons in God. To stress the doctrine of the Trinity, the Fathers of the Church composed prayers and hymns that wererecited on Sundays as part of the Divine Office, the official prayer of the Church. Eventually, a special version of this officebegan to be celebrated on the Sunday after Pentecost, and the Church in England, at the request of St. Thomas Becket(1118-1170), was granted permission to celebrate Trinity Sunday. The celebration of Trinity Sunday was made universal byPope John XXII (1316-34).

For many centuries, the Athanasian Creed was recited at Mass on Trinity Sunday. While seldom read today, the creed canbe read privately or recited with your family to revive this ancient tradition. Retrieved from http://catholicism.about.com/

Spiritual WarfarePut On the Belt of Truth. Written by Jamee RaeArmor of God: Girding the Waist with Truth

lthough Scripture encourages Christians to spend quality time seeking and knowing the truth, some people have more trouble than others understanding oming to grips with it and separating truth from lies. Others tend to fall into various levels of deception and many have unwittingly traded truth for lies.

In 2 Timothy 2:26, Paul says Christians are to correct those who are in opposition to the truth and pray that God will grant them repentance so that theyescape the snare of the devil, having been taken captive by him to do his will."

The way of escape from the devil's snare is for truth to reveal itself and do its work. Therefore, daily Bible reading is the best antidote to the lies of themy. Reading the written word is also a way to access the Mind of Christ and to be in tune with the heart of God, especially when there are serious spiuestions to be answered.

To know truth is good, but Christians must embrace truth at all times and agree to continually grow in it. Truth is foundithin the 66 books of the Bible, from Genesis 1:1 through Revelation 22:21. Though the authors of the Bible are human and

llible, the written words are infallible. They were not only authored by wise and godly men, but are the words of God givenrough the Holy Spirit. In general, the Old Testament is God speaking and revealing himself. The New Testament is God

peaking and revealing His son.Christians can count on the Word of God as absolute truth and use Scripture as a trusted moral compass. More than 4,000

mes Bible authors insist they are writing the Word of God. In 2 Timothy 3:16, this concept is confirmed. "All Scripture isven by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, thate man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped in every good work."Another version of the Bible says that all Scripture is God breathed. That's a powerful statement, and one that Christians must believe as fact in order t

e work that God has called them to.Considered Paul's last will and testament, as well as a handbook for newer Christian pastors, 2 Timothy offers practical guidance and instruction in reChristian leadership and obedience. The letter presents the importance of the truth and Paul beseeches Timothy, his son in the Lord, to guard the messa

e gospel, to suffer for it, and to pass truth on through the generations. It isn't by chance that satan is referred to as "the father of lies" in John 8:44. Such a description means that he is literally the seed of all lies. He hates trut

much, he never misses an opportunity to twist the intent of Scripture. Knowing this, God spoke through the Holy Spirit to Paul in order to provides Chriith specific ways to stay in the truth and fight against lies.

In Ephesians 6:10-18, Paul writes about the Armor of God, which includes the belt of truth. In verse 14, the inspired word instructs Christians to gird aists with truth. In other words, put on the belt of truth. In the natural world, a belt is used to hold something up and keep it in place. The same is tru

piritual sense. Truth keeps Scripture in place and keeps Christians secure in their faith. While all authors of the Bible offer truth, one sentence from Jesus in Matthew 4:4 clarifies the matter. "It is written, 'Man shall not live by bread alon

y every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.'"This Scripture proves that Jesus himself believed that the Bible was God's literal word. This is emphasized when Jesus continually responded with

ritten" as the devil tried to tempt him in the desert. Retrieved from http://www.sharefaith.com

The Vocation of a Chaplainriestly ministry to those serving in the military is a unique and special vocation. The

Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA is the largest geographical diocese in theountry, and, within its bounds, those called to serve as chaplains must be prepared tondertake ministries as diverse as the regions they visit. As a sacramental minister, thehaplain must bring Christ and the healing power of the Church to men and women serv-ng in an endless range of stressful, dangerous and possible deadly circumstances. He must be prepared toansfer from parish ministry to ministry in a war zone at a moment's notice, and act as comforter to sol-iers and their families in a way few others will ever experience.
