Class PB Newsletter Term 2 2019 Welcome back to Term 2! I hope that you had a relaxing holiday and are looking forward to an action-packed term just as much as we are! Below is a brief overview of what students will be learning this term. We are looking forward to seeing some great work. Prep students will continue to participate in 3 x Outdoor Learning Time sessions per week which are intentional play based learning activities covering curriculum content and students’ interests, with a focus on oral language, vocabulary and thinking. I encourage you to keep this newsletter handy and refer to it throughout the term to be aware of any upcoming events and as a tool to discuss your child’s learning. Focus stories include Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Three Little Pigs. Students also begin our oral literacy program with Show and Tell commencing in Week 2. In addition, we continue focusing on speech sounds, name writing, rhyming words, memory, blending and segmenting words, exposure to familiar words through reading and writing, decodable reading, handwriting through Casey the Caterpillar Program, involvement with quality literature and songs, and learning concepts of print when reading. Students will write a retell on the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and then present this orally to the class. Mathematics Topics covered this term include: shape (2D and 3D), sorting, patterning, measurement (length/ width/ mass/ thick/ thin), sequencing events and ordering daily events, data (answering yes/no questions), counting forwards and backwards, subitising to 5, comparing quantities (more, less, same) and connecting number names, numerals and quantities. Shape: identify 2D shapes and sort based on common characteristic; Number: connect number names, numerals Science Students will explore the function and suitability of different materials and understand that materials are selected for a specific purpose based on their properties. Students will build a house suitable for ‘The Three Little Pigs’. They will describe the properties of materials, ask and respond to questions and share their observations. HASS Students will explore events celebrated by families, including their own. They will remember and retell family events they have celebrated and sequence personal events. Students are assessed through a collection of work. The Arts During Term 2 students participate in drama. It is expected you listen to your child read each night. The folder and book are to be returned every FRIDAY even if you did not complete al of the books. Please set your child up for success by completing this with them. Further instructions are located inside the folder. Camera Words: Camera Word books continue to be updated regularly. Children are exposed to these words at school, but repeated exposure at home will allow these words to be remembered automatically. Show and Tell: Please support your child’s oral language by helping them to prepare a short talk (up to 1 minute) on the weekly topic. The Show and Tell roster was distributed via email. Library Borrowing is Tuesday. A library bag is required to borrow books. Parade: Mondays at 2.30pm in Girrawheen Place. Everyone is welcome. Music: Wednesdays at 2:30pm – 3:00pm. PE: Thursdays at 2:00pm 3:00pm

Curriculum focus – what we will be working on in class this term
