Curriculum focus – what we will be working on in class this term
Content Assessment
English Students will enjoy listening to fairy tales and will learn to retell a story. Focus stories include Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Three Little Pigs. Students also begin our oral literacy program with Show and Tell commencing in Week 2. In addition, we continue focusing on speech sounds, name writing, rhyming words, memory, blending and segmenting words, exposure to familiar words through reading and writing, decodable reading, handwriting through Casey the Caterpillar Program, involvement with quality literature and songs, and learning concepts of print when reading.
Students will write a written retell on the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and then present this orally to the class.
Maths Topics covered this term include: shape (2D and 3D), sorting, patterning, measurement (length/ width/ mass/ thick/ thin), sequencing events and ordering daily events, data (answering yes/no questions), counting forwards and backwards, subitising to 5, comparing quantities (more, less, same) and connecting number names, numerals and quantities.
Shape: identify 2D shapes and sort based on common characteristics. Number: connect number names, numerals and quantities up to 10 and order small collections.
Science Students will explore the function and suitability of different materials and understand that materials are selected for a specific purpose based on their properties.
Students will build a house suitable for the Three Little Pigs. Students will describe the properties of materials, ask and respond to questions about materials and share their observations.
HASS Students will explore events celebrated by families, including their own. They will remember and retell family events they have celebrated and sequence personal events.
Students are assessed through a collection of work.
The Arts During term 2 students will participate in drama. Students will present re-enactments of known stories in small groups and learn about appropriate voice levels, gestures and eye contact.
Students will re-enact the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’ in small groups.
Technology Linking with our English and Science Units, students will select appropriate
materials to build a windproof house suitable for the Three Little Pigs.
Students will be assessed on their choice and knowledge of materials and their explanation of their chosen materials properties.
