Class PB Newsletter Term 2 2018 Welcome back to Term 2! I trust that you had a relaxing holiday and are ready for an action-packed term. Learning is well underway in the prep rooms and PB has settled back into their school routine flawlessly! So proud of them! Below is a brief overview of what students will be learning this term. We are expecting to see some great work from students! I encourage you to keep this newsletter handy and refer to it throughout the term to be aware of any upcoming events. Focus stories include Goldilocks and the Three Bears, The Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Three Little Pigs. Students also begin our oral literacy program with Show and Tell commencing in Week 2. In addition, we continue focusing on speech sounds, name writing, rhyming words, memory, blending and segmenting words, exposure to familiar words through reading and writing, decodable reading, handwriting through Casey the Caterpillar Program, involvement with quality literature and songs, and learning concepts of print when reading. Students will write a written retell on the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’ and then present this orally to the class. Maths Topics covered this term include: shape (2D and 3D), sorting, patterning, measurement (length/ width/ mass/ thick/ thin), sequencing events and ordering daily events, data (answering yes/no questions), counting forwards and backwards, subitising to 5, comparing quantities (more, less, same) and connecting number names, numerals and quantities. Shape: identify 2D shapes and sort based on common characteristics. Number: connect number names, numerals and quantities up to 10 and order small collections. Science Students will explore the function and suitability of different materials and understand that materials are selected for a specific purpose based on their properties. Students will build a house suitable for the Three Little Pigs. Students will describe the properties of materials, ask and respond to questions about materials and share their observations. HASS Students will explore events celebrated by families, including their own. They will remember and retell family events they have celebrated and sequence personal events. Students are assessed through a collection of work. The Arts During term 2 students will participate in drama. Students will present re- enactments of known stories in small groups and learn about appropriate voice levels, gestures and eye contact. Students will re-enact the story ‘The Three Little Pigs’ in small groups. Technology Linking with our English and Science Units, students will select appropriate materials to build a windproof house suitable for the Three Little Pigs. Students will be assessed on their choice and knowledge of materials and their explanation of their chosen materials properties. Specialist Lessons School begins at 8.45am. Please ensure students arrive prior to the 8.45am bell so they can have an organised start to the day. QAR Readers: Resume Week 1, Term 2. Your child will take home a folder that contains a picture book (each Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). Inside the picture book is a selection of comprehension questions. It is expected you read the story each night with your child. The folder and book are to be returned the following day, even if you did not complete the story. Please set your child up for success by completing this with them. Further instructions are located inside the folder. Library Borrowing is Tuesday. A library bag is required to borrow books. Parade: Mondays at 2.30pm in Girrawheen Place. Everyone is welcome. Music: Wednesdays at 2:30pm 3:00pm. PE: Thursdays 2:00pm 3:00pm.
