• It’s cheap• Accessible to anyone who’s online,
especially populations we’re not the best at reaching
• Becoming mainstream• Easy to modify• New tools make it easier to create
than traditional media• Accessible to many
Ways to Participate
• “Listening” AKA “lurking”: watching YouTube videos, looking up reviews
• “Joining”: getting a Facebook account• “Collecting”: Getting news with a
“reader,” getting Twitter “tweets”• “Critiquing”: writing reviews,
participating in “wikis”• “Creating”: Uploading YouTube
videos, making blog posts

First Things First: Things to Think About• Figure out what it is you want• Determine whether you have the time
& personpower to keep the page going• If you don’t have either, don’t create a
page/channel/etc.
Think of it this way: If you build it, will YOU come back? (If YOU don’t come
back, neither will they.)

Easier if you do it this way (keeps professional separate from personal, easier to manage)
