Your Spellbook

The spells that you add to your spellbook as you gainlevels reflect the experience you will undoubtedly gainin the medical field. You might find other spells duringyour adventures. You could discover a spell scrawledon a scroll in the annals of a sanatorium, for example,or in an ancient tome from a long-dead scholar.

Copying a Spell into the Book . When you find aphysician spell of 1st level or higher, you can add it to

your spellbook if it is of a level for which you have spellslots and if you can spare the time to decipher andcopy it.

Copying a spell into your spellbook involvesreproducing the basic form of the spell, then allowingthe general form of the spell to enter your mind. Youmust practice the spell until you are able to call uponthe physick within you using that spell. Then, you mustcopy the spell down into your spellbook using yourown personal notation.

For each level of the spell, the process takes 3 hoursand costs 20 gp. The cost represents materialcomponents you expend as you experiment with thespell to master it, as well as the materials needed torecord the spell into your spellbook.

Replacing the B ook. You can copy a spell from yourown spellbook into another book—for example, if youwant to make a backup copy of your spellbook. This isjust like copying a new spell into your spellbook, butfaster and easier, since you understand your ownnotation and already know how to cast the spell. Youneed spend only 1 hour and 5 gp for each level of thecopied spell.

If you lose your spellbook, you can use the sameprocedure to transcribe the spells that you haveprepared into a new spellbook. Filling out theremainder of your spellbook requires you to find newspells to do so, as normal. For this reason, manyphysicians keep backup spellbooks in a safe place.
