Barolo and Piemonte

2015

“Readers will find a number of dazzling 2015’s…” Antonio Galloni

Piemonte lovers have been graced with a string of great vintages since the turn of the century. Almost every vintage since 2000 has been good to great. We think 2015 is very good (and 2016 will be the vintage of a generation). Of course, not everyone made great wines in 2015, but the top producers did, and they are all found in this offer. There is so much very good wine coming out of Piemonte that we can pick and choose and only offer bottles that we can recommend wholeheartedly. We now offer wines from 25 different producers; and will continue to expand this selection. The summer of 2015 was mostly very hot, but the water available to the vines was abundant following the winter of 2014/2015, which had been very wet including lots of snow. This caused an even and long ripening season, and the grapes were healthy and in good condition when harvested. This long season that started with an early budbreak produced wines that do not have a hot vintage profile. There are many fresh and sleek wines in this offer. The best wines this vintage again come from Burlotto, Elio Grasso, Bartolo Mascarello, the Conternos and Sandrone but we also highly recommend Cavallotto, Brovia and Palladino. Keen-eyed collectors will notice a few 2016’s already available from Paitin in Barbaresco and Antoniotti in Bramaterra. Hurry.…enough said! New additions this year include Roagna, Fratelli Alessandria, Gaja and Paulo Scavino. This year also brings us some incredible Riserva bottlings like the Monfortino 2013 (the most expensive wine from Italy) and Aldo Conterno’s Gran Bussia 2010, as well as the Riservas 2013 from Cavallotto. Not all the wines in this offer are from famous producers, and some are not expensive at all. They provide the best value fine wines in the world in our opinion, so don’t be afraid to try a few of these producers.

The Market

Piemonte has been gaining in popularity recently, as we have been saying in our introduction for the past few years, and some wines are now very difficult to get. It is starting to resemble the difficulty of getting the wines from top burgundy producers. Invariably, prices for the wines from these top producers have gone up: Rinaldi, Cappellano, Bartolo Mascarello, Giacomo Conterno. Prices have approximately doubled in the past 3-4 years!

Expect further price rises as demands heats up and more merchants start offering these wines to their clients. Demand is also picking up in Asia and this could accelerate price rises. Although we do not cater specifically to investors (regardless of the connotation from our company name), we do see demand from large buyers and collectors, and their interest in Piemonte is growing every year.

Even at these high levels, we still urge wine lovers to buy the wines as they will most likely go up in value. Regardless, they will provide immense drinking pleasure at comparatively affordable prices as opposed to Burgundy and Bordeaux, or even California.

The incredible 2016 vintage will create even more buzz, demand, price hikes and market speculation. Don’t expect to get top 2016’s if you haven’t been involved in Piemonte buying previously…

There are now 74 pages in this offer, making it one of the most comprehensive Piemonte offers in the UK and the world. We hold back wines that have been available since early in the year in order to allow Barolo lovers to have a one stop shop. We stand by every single wine in this offer, but please don’t hesitate to get in touch for recommendations or just to chat about Piemonte!

Cheers!!

Gilles, Tom, James, Forman and Matt “The full capability of the nebbiolo grape’s expressive nature is alive in Barolo 2015 and it is a vintage to really celebrate. In general, the wines are exuberantly fragrant and show fresh clear fruit on the nose with abundant aromatic complexity. Structurally they are rich in ripe, fine and powerful tannins. They are toned, muscular and athletic, coupled with freshness, a keen sense of focus, great length, and an astute balance. These wines also have the great fortune of offering instant appeal as well as more in-depth attraction, which is the hallmark of a truly great vintage. These wines will satisfy both the experienced palate and educated connoisseur. They are also very expressive and show strong typicity by communes and also single vineyards. But if there was one attribute to single out, it is the way in which these wines combine power with elegance. They are thrilling to taste.” JamesSuckling.com

Alto Piemonte

1: Odilio e Mattia Antoniotti

“Antoniotti’s Bramaterra remains a sort of ‘white rhino’ for collectors who’ve grown enamoured of Alto Piemonte Nebbiolos.”

If you share our passion for truly handmade and unbelievably rare Italian reds, this is an exciting treat. Odilio Antoniotti’s fabled and impossibly scarce Bramaterra. This is among the most pure, soulful, and deeply traditional Nebbiolo-based reds exported from Italy. We would happily drink any vintage of it over many far-pricier releases from Barolo and Barbaresco, if only the opportunity presented itself more often. This wine is a no-brainer addition to your cellar. Nebbiolo-based reds of this quality, at this price, don’t come along very often! “Visiting Odilio Antoniotti and his son, Mattia, in the mountainous Piedmontese village of Casa del Bosco is a remarkable experience. Their home/cellar was built in the 1700s and wine has been produced therein ever since. It is like a museum exhibition that demonstrates how pre-industrial wine was made: grapes are harvested by hand in the adjacent vineyard, then channelled through old grated windows into the family’s basement where they ferment in ancient brick-encased cement vats that are built into the walls. There are no filters, no modern machinery, and almost everything is done by hand, using gravity as the primary force that drives wine from point A to B—then to its eventual home in a hand-corked bottle. This simplicity, patience, and attention to detail is obvious in every aspect of the family’s work—and did I mention that each individual wine label is applied by hand with a paintbrush and glue? It’s fascinating, and in tasting overtly “old school” wines like Antoniotti, I often wonder if there is a purity and depth that gets lost when everything is measured, controlled, and touched by machinery instead of human hands.” Ian Cauble, Master Sommelier

Bramaterra 2016 £135 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

2016 was a balanced vintage, with enough rain and plenty of sunshine, especially during the warm and dry Summer months. The warm days continued into September, balanced by cool nights, which allowed the grapes and tannins to reach optimum ripeness. Harvest took place 1st/2nd week of October. The nose is fragrant and lifted, with a lovely kirsch cherry perfume, little red fruits, alpine herbs and a gentle spice. The usual cement fermentation, with 3 weeks maceration, followed by 3 years in Slavonian botte grandi (the minimum for Bramaterra is 18 months in wood). Very elegant and fine, with silky tannins, a core of red berry and dark cherry fruit. Poised and vertical, delicious even now, but with immense ageing potential too. Stunning.

2: Nervi-Conterno

“My goal is to elevate Gattinara to a whole new level.”

Roberto Conterno

The maker of Italy's most collected wine, Monfortino, acquired Gattinara's Nervi in late April 2018. The news hit Piedmont with intensity as the Nebbiolo grape had suddenly been given more latitude. The acquisition of Nervi by Conterno was done for several reasons. Global warming and the erratic and unpredictable weather conditions that come with it are forcing wine producers to look to higher altitude vineyard sites to temper the warmer temperatures and erratic weather that have started to distort the traditional character of Barolo. Nervi is based in Gattinara, with its high-altitude vineyards and cooler climate, closer to the Alps. The second important reason was the existing high quality of Nervi and the even greater potential they have. Roberto started to consult with Nervi a few years ago, increasing quality even further. Now, it’s basically his to do with it what he wants and the sky’s the limit. The Gattinara appellation is home to volcanic soils and is a world apart from the mostly calcareous marl found in Barolo. Gattinara is another small appellation in Alto Piemonte which has traditionally made Nebbiolo based wines. The notoriety of Conterno will surely push this historic region back into the limelight. Roberto’s aim, along with his sons, is to apply the same fastidious attention to detail and quality to the wines of Nervi as he does to those of the Giacomo Conterno estate. The wines are already traditional, pure and age-worthy and they are surely only going to get better from here!

Gattinara 2016 £210 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £420 per c/s In Bond (6 magnums per case) £175 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Tasted from the barrel, the 2016 Gattinara will be bottled in September and will hit the market one month later in October. This is a more important wine compared to the 2015. It shows more depth and substance in the mouth and more length. It's more robust too. The consumer should wait several more months for this one. 91-93 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Gattinara Vigna Valferana 2014 £360 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Of the two vineyard sites vinified separately Nervi-Conterno, the 2014 Gattinara Vigna Valferana is perhaps crisper and sharper. The vines are planted some 350 meters above sea level, and although this is not particularly high, they enjoy open, west-facing exposures. The volcanic soils are cooler as a result, and the wine offers beautifully pronounced aromas of forest berry, underbrush, bramble and wild rose. You also get a clear mineral pause with brimstone and crushed granite that lasts for a few brief moments. The tannins are soft and silky. Of the two single-vineyard wines, Vigna Valferana is the more immediate and accessible.

The 2014 Gattinara Vigna Valferana is a more immediate Nebbiolo, with beautiful aromas that are a bit more broad in scope than other expressions' bouquets. You get some dark spice and a variety of herbal notes. There is a pretty sweetness, too, and a general grandeur to this profile. As beautiful as this 2014 is, Roberto Conterno is even more excited about the 2018 vintage that is coming down the line. 93+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Gattinara Vigna Molsino 2014 £360 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

1,325 cases produced, only made in the best vintages. The Molsino vineyard was planted in 1992 and enjoys a protected position at the heart of a little amphitheatre of hills. It is planted at about 400 meters above sea level, but the daytime heat and sunshine settles softly into this unique vineyard basin. The 2014 Gattinara Vigna Molsino shows power, firmness and finesse. These traits suggest that it needs a little more bottle age to further its evolution. The bouquet shows tight aromas of cassis, spice and campfire ash. Although Roberto Conterno promises that he will not change the Nervi house style, it will be fascinating to taste this wine in a few years, when it is under the full tutelage of the maker of Monfortino. One thing must be said for both Monfortino and Molsino—these wines benefit from first rate quality of fruit. Roberto Conterno tells me he prefers the 2014 Gattinara Vigna Molsino over his other single-vineyard expression from the Vigna Valferana. I tend to agree given this wine's large span of beautiful aromas. This is a deep and expressive Nebbiolo that starts with plump fruit tones and ends with drying mineral nuances. There is a touch of white pepper too. Bring this one out for pheasant or other game bird roast. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barbaresco

3: Gaja

“The young 2016 Barbaresco’s are some of the most compelling young wines I have tasted in twenty years of visiting the region.

Many of the 2016s are still in barrel, but the picture that is starting to emerge from wines I tasted in bottle and cask is of a very high-

quality vintage with the potential to be truly extraordinary.” Antonio Galloni

The 2016 vintage is shaping up to be ‘a once in a lifetime vintage’ in Piemonte – these are truly spectacular wines! The ‘entry level’ Barbaresco scored 96 Points, the joint highest score it has ever achieved – matching the legendary 1989 & 1990 vintages.

Barbaresco 2016 £800 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £825 c/s In Bond (12 halves per case) £850 c/s In Bond (3 magnums per case) £695 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Gaja's 2016 Barbaresco is positively stellar. A wine of poise and grace, the 2016 has so much to offer. Expressive spice and floral notes open up first, but what really stands out is the wine's nuance and delineation. There is a sense of translucency to the 2016 that is impossible to miss. Sweet red cherry, mint, cinnamon and rose petal develop in the glass, adding further shades of nuance. Quite simply, the 2016 is one of the very finest Gaja Barbarescos in recent memory. This is such a gorgeous wine. Don't miss it. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Special Offer – buy a case of each single vineyard Barbaresco for £1,995 per case In Bond (saving £600)

Barbaresco Costa Russi 2016 £2,195 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2016 Barbaresco Costa Russi is ripe, creamy and enveloping, as it so often is, and yet also preserves the super classic sense of structure that runs through all these wines. In 2016, Costa Russi has an extra touch of mid-palate sweetness that gives the wine its sense of immediacy. Succulent red cherry, rosewater, kirsch, mint and dried flowers meld together in the glass. Soft and sensual, with tons of allure, Costa Russi is another winner from Gaja. Time in the glass brings out the wine's density and tannins, both of which it has in spades. 98 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn 2016 £2,195 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Tildìn is a fabulous, incredibly complete wine that soars out of the glass with explosive structure and vertical lift. The tannins are very much present, but also matched beautifully by the wine's aromatic intensity and overall drive. Dark macerated cherry, spice, leather, licorice, plum and mocha add darker shades of nuance. In 2016, Sorì Tildìn is a bit more brooding and bigger than it often is, and yet all the elements are impeccably balanced. It is quite simply a majestic wine of real grandeur and total class, but it is not obvious. Sorì Tildìn will appeal most to readers who understand what the truest essence of Nebbiolo is all about. In a word: magnificent! 100 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo 2016 £2,195 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì San Lorenzo is an eternal wine that will need 10-15 years in bottle to truly come around. Sorì San Lorenzo is often a big, virile wine. There is plenty of heft to the 2016, but at the same time, I also find an element of refinement and nuance that Sorì San Lorenzo has rarely, if ever, shown. Black cherry, cloves, menthol, licorice, gravel and incense are some of the many aromas and flavor that meld together in this dramatic and dramatically beautiful Barbaresco from the Gaja family. The Sorì San Lorenzo just explodes on the finish, with an array of aromas, flavors and textures that will leave readers weak at the knees. The 2016 is an outrageously beautiful, vivid wine of real gravitas and power. 98+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Gaja's 2015 Barolos mark another step in the quiet transformation that has taken place here over the last handful of years. A focus on sustainable farming and achieving greater finesse in the wines are just two of the recent developments that sisters Gaia and Rossana Gaja have spearheaded at their family's estate. Now with son Giovanni Gaja at the winery as well, Angelo and Lucia Gaja have put the young generation firmly in charge, although still under their watchful eye.

Barolo Conteisa 2015 £990 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £350 per magnum In Bond (1 per case) £1,295 per Imperial (5L) In Bond (1 per case)

The 2015 Barolo Conteisa is a heady, exotic wine, and also one of the most complete, alluring Conteisas I have ever tasted. Conteisa is usually a wine of grace and understatement. The 2015, on the other hand, is a bold, sweeping Barolo that saturates the palate with stunning depth and volume. Even with all of its intensity, the 2015 remains vibrant. This is such a complete, harmonious wine. 97 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Sperss 2015 £1,125 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £390 per magnum In Bond (1 per case) £1,425 per Imperial (5L) In Bond (1 per case)

The 2015 Barolo Sperss shows all of the darkness and muscle that are so typical of Serralunga. Black cherry, plum, licorice, incense, gravel, cured meats and scorched earth infuse this potent, backward wine with tremendous character. My impression is that the extraction and oak are all a bit more pushed here relative to the other wines in the range. 98 Points, Antonio Galloni

4: Paitin

A traditional winery since the first Barbaresco wine was bottled in 1893, but now fully biodynamic and making exciting wines. The soil at Serraboella is a calcareous white clay with sandstone. Serraboella is a particularly steep hill facing south-southwest at 280 to 320 meters in elevation. From it, the Pasquero-Elia family produces three Barbaresco – a Serraboella bottling from the larger part of their Serraboella parcel, a Sori Paitin bottling from the most sun-exposed parcel (Sori in Piemontese means the spot of the hill most exposed to sun – where the snow melts first) and an old vine Riserva from the same parcel only in the best vintages. They make a delicious Nebbiolo d’Alba from a vineyard at a house they own just outside of Alba.

Barbaresco Serraboella 2016 £160 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

In the Neive village, Serraboella is the only hill that combines Serravalliano and Tortoniano soils. This is a rare combination of soil enhanced by a South-West exposure, which in this unique plot produces a more open and inviting Barbaresco, with good aging potential. Soft, open-knit and gracious. Succulent red cherry, mint, white pepper and chalk make a positive first impression. Hints of rose petal, mint and cinnamon blend into the creamy finish. The 2016 Barbaresco Serraboella is bright, perfumed and very nicely lifted, with an attractive interplay of floral aromatics and textural depth. Mint, pine, kirsch, dried flowers and sweet tobacco are some of the nuances that emerge. The 2016 is tightly wound and classically austere in style, so it needs time in bottle to unwind, but it has undoubtedly fine potential. 92 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Sori Paitin 2016 £200 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Historically this was the only place with Nebbiolo in the South of Neive. The soil here is way more compact compared to rest of the hill and is located in the highest and sunniest part of the hill. That is summarised by the Sorì name, from the local dialect. In 1893 they named their first Barbaresco from this plot. Dark, mysterious and inviting, all about allure. Dark spices, menthol, sage, rosemary and dried flowers grace the palate in a dark, sumptuous Barbaresco. The 2016 Barbaresco Sorì Paitin is powerful, but also quite reticent today. Dark cherry, menthol, licorice, sage and dried flowers are all found in a searing, intense Sorì Paitin that needs to be at its best. Tannic and austere, the 2016 appears to be going through a closed phase, and yet it has a feeling of verticality and gravitas that is impossible to miss. 93 Points, Antonio Galloni The excellent Paitin property, focussed on its well-exposed Serraboella vineyard, uses traditional vinification methods, with long macerations and ageing in large casks rather than barriques. This bottling, from 40-year-old vines, displays a heady raspberry nose that's quite floral too, with beguiling generosity of fruit. It's lavish and very concentrated in the mouth, with bold tannins that are by no means too extracted or tough. Spicy and assertive, the wine has ample energy, drive and length. 94 Points, Decanter

Barbaresco Sori Paitin Vecchie Vigne 2014 £300 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £115 per magnum In Bond (1 magnum per case)

This is the purest expression of the vineyard, with the oldest wines which date back to the “selection massale” practiced by Secondo in 1953.These plants are able to express the unique terroir that characterize the hill in a deeper and complex way. Being a Riserva it is produced only in exceptional vintages when the family judges it expresses something outstanding. 315 cases made. Paitin's 2014 Barbaresco Vecchie Vigne is rich, racy and plush, all signatures of the late harvest. Here, too, the tannins are fully ripe, which gives the wine much of its sensual, layered personality. The 2014 is young, but it is shaping up to be a jewel of a wine. A final burst of sweet floral, spice and hard candy notes add the final shades of nuance. 92-95 Points, Antonio Galloni

Nebbiolo d’Alba, Ca’Veja 2016 £130 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

A solid and linear red with plum and dark-berry character. Medium body, fresh fruit and a juicy finish. Shows focus and brightness. Drink now. 90 Points, James Suckling

5: Produttori del Barbaresco 2014

We are delighted to offer what must be some of the finest value for money collectable wines in all of Italy. The 2014 Produttori Barbaresco Riservas are superb, but production is down by one third the usual volume, and in the case of the Pajè & Montefico vineyards, by more than half due to spring frost and, later in the season, hail damage. “Piedmont fans will want to be on the lookout for the 2014 Riservas from Produttori del Barbaresco when they are released later this year. I can't think of too many wines that offer this level of quality for what remain incredibly fair prices. Managing Director Aldo Vacca told me the 2014 harvest stretched from October 8 to 24, which is very late by present day standards. The 2014 Riservas are dark, potent and built for aging. The 2014s spent about five weeks on the skins, including ten days of submerged cap maceration. Malolactic fermentations took place in steel and the wines were aged in cask. In many years, this range includes one or two slight underperformers, but in 2014, the wines are superb across the board. Some will drink well earlier than others, of course, but this is one of the most consistently outstanding set of Riservas I can remember tasting here.” Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Riserva Asilli 2014 £300 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is somber and dense in this vintage. Silky Asili tannins bring out the wine's voluptuousness and soft contours. Dark red cherry and plum fruit show some of the typical Asili sensuality, but the 2014 is a powerhouse that is going to need time to come around. In 2014, Asili is unusually – almost uncharacteristically – austere. 1,100 cases produced (12 bottles per case) 95+ Points, Antonio Galloni The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Asili is a beautifully complete expression that shows precise and incisive aromatic intensity, followed by firm structure and impressive length. There is a brief interlude of mineral dustiness on the mid-palate that passes briefly to reveal more ripe cherry fruit on the close. I'm not sure what the total acidity is, but this expression gives the impression of being slightly less fresh than some of the other single-vineyard wines in this series of Riservas. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barbaresco Riserva Pora 2014 £230 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora is a dark, sensual beauty. Deeply spiced and balsamic, with tremendous textural richness, the Pora is utterly beguiling. I can't remember a Pora with this much depth, textural resonance and brooding intensity. The 2014 needs at least a few years to be at its best, but it is superb even in the early going. I won't be surprised if the 2014 turns out to be better than this note suggests. 1,400 cases produced (12 bottles per case) 94 Points, Antonio Galloni

I had tasted this vintage last year as a barrel sample. Now a fully complete wine, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Pora did not disappoint, and even jumped up a few points. The Riserva Pora opens to dark fruit intensity with a slightly more accessible quality. Those lovely floral tones of lavender and violet are ever present. After having spent three years in oak and another year in the bottle, this wine offers a looser mouthfeel in terms of tannic structure, making it a bit more open and immediate in personality. You could uncork this bottle in 2020 if you just can't wait, but ideally, it is meant for the longer haul. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barbaresco Riserva Ovello 2014 £230 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello is bright and piercing, as it so often is, and yet it also has more than enough fruit to fill out its mid-weight, energetic frame. Pine, mint, crushed rocks and sweet red plum build into the huge, piercing finish. The Ovello is another wine in this range that demands patience. Even in the early going it is super impressive. The 2014 s an unusually dense, packed Ovello. It should be terrific in another few years' time. 1,400 cases produced (12 bottles per case) 95 Points, Antonio Galloni Always one of my favorite wines from Produttori del Barbaresco, the 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Ovello lays out a broad and soft mouthfeel, with tannins that have already been polished and integrated thanks to ample time in the bottle already. It's safe to say that this Ovello cru loyally demonstrates the level of richness and textural softness that this site is known for. The bouquet is redolent of bright berry fruit with cherry, blackberry and plum. Also, the 2014 vintage was a warm one at the end of the growing season, and you taste a little bit of that ripeness here too. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà 2014 £300 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà is powerful, dense and explosive, with tremendous intensity of fruit and structure. The Rabajà is dark and potent – as all these wines are – but the tannins and acids give the wine considerable tension and energy. The Rabajà is a powerful, towering wine endowed with massive structure and intensity to burn. Like so many of these wines, the Rabajà is somber and brooding in feel. 1,400 cases produced (12 bottles per case) 96 Points, Antonio Galloni The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Rabajà shows excellent textural richness with dark fruit, followed by notes of tobacco and tilled earth. Black truffle and dried fruit converge on the bouquet to add to the intensity. You really appreciate the freshness and sheer power of this succulent, well-structured and medium to full-bodied Barbaresco. This one's the real deal. 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota 2014 £230 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is another of the overachievers in this range. White pepper, bright red cherry, floral notes and mint cut through the fruit in this beautifully vivid, crystalline Barbaresco. There is a level of energy, drive and overall nuance in the 2014 I don't recall having seen in the past. The 2014 is a terrific Muncagota. 800 cases produced (12 bottles per case) 94 Points, Antonio Galloni

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Muncagota is beautifully polished and bright, with dark berry fruit, ripe cherry, crushed stone and pressed flowers. The wine is compact and firm, and you feel the tannins and power in the mouth. The Muncagota remains slightly more closed in terms of the bouquet, but this will open up with some time. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo 2014 £230 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is the most open-knit and easygoing of these Riservas. Creamy and giving, the Rio Sordo is one of the more available of the Riservas in the early going, an impression that is reinforced by its mid-weight structure. Perfumed floral notes add lift to the dark, red-toned fruit. 800 cases produced (12 bottles per case) 93 Points, Antonio Galloni The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo represents a jump forward in structure compared to the other three vineyards (Pora, Pajè and Ovello) that were tasted before this wine. The Riserva Rio Sordo shows a dark and solid personality, with a tight core of black fruit that will relax and unwind with more bottle aging in the cellar. It is also slightly sharper and more focused in terms of mouthfeel, with the kind of tannic tightness you always get with young Nebbiolo in the cooler vintages such as 2014. Barbaresco lovers should jot this one down. 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano 2014 £230 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Rio Sordo is the most open-knit and easygoing of these Riservas. Creamy and giving, the Rio Sordo is one of the more available of the Riservas in the early going, an impression that is reinforced by its mid-weight structure. Perfumed floral notes add lift to the dark, red-toned fruit. 800 cases produced (12 bottles per case) 93 Points, Antonio Galloni One of the many highlights in this range, the Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano is superb. A big enrobing wine, the Montestefano wraps around the palate with stunning depth. Today, the Montestefano is utterly embryonic, and yet it exudes depth, resonance and pure class. The Montestefano is one of the more complete wines in the range because of the way it deftly balances fruit intensity and structure. 1,200 cases produced (12 bottles per case) 95+ Points, Antonio Galloni This is visibly the darkest in color and concentration of this series of wines from the well-known Produttori del Barbaresco cooperative. The 2014 Barbaresco Riserva Montestefano offers round and supple fruit with dark cherry, blackberry and some easy spice. Once again, the wine is a bit flatter than I had hoped, lacking that extra level of snappy freshness. 93 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

6: Roagna

Luca Roagna describes the vintage style as close to the 2013’s – good structure and tension but with more elegance. For him, 2014 perfectly mirrors their house style.

“This is an extraordinary set of wines from Luca Roagna. The 2014 Barbarescos are superb, while the Barolos are very good, especially considering the vintage was much more challenging in Barolo than it was in Barbaresco. A stunning rendition of the flagship Barbaresco Crichët Pajè rounds out the range. Readers will see new Barbaresco bottlings from Gallina, Faset and Albesani in the range this year. As always, the wines are super-classic in feel. Over the last years, Roagna has quietly shortened the amount of time his wines spend in cask and began introducing cement in the cellar. Today's wines have a sense of fruit purity and inner sweetness that the older wines often did not. I can't recommend these wines highly enough.” Antonio Galloni

White Wines Montemarzino Timorasso 2017 £265 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

This is 100% Timorasso sourced from a one-hectare vineyard in the town of Montemarzino in the Colli Tortonesi area. Luca’s first vintage was 2014. As with Solea, it has two years cask ageing (not new wood). It is whole bunch fermented in wood with natural yeasts. No battonage to maintain freshness.

Solea 2017 £265 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

This is a blend of Chardonnay and Nebbiolo (normally 75/25, the latter vinified with no skin contact). Creamy in texture and multi-layered offering great depth. Fruit for this comes from the Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. It has two years cask ageing.

Red Wines Barbaresco Pajè 2014 £395 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Made using the youngest vines, a youthful 50 years old! Always great perfume, spice, earthy notes and layers of overt fruit and underlying minerality.

Cinnamon, cedar, sweet pipe tobacco and leather are some of the nuances that emerge from the 2014 Barbaresco Pajè. Pliant and open knit, the 2014 is surprisingly open for a young Roagna Barbaresco, which makes it almost shockingly easy to enjoy even now (in relative terms), in what is the very early going by Roagna standards. Even, so there is plenty of Nebbiolo structure and tannin. Sweet rose petal, mint, tobacco, underbrush, game, and sweet red berry fruit add to the wine's stunning allure. 94+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Pira 2014 £395 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

More delicate than Pira VV, this is classic Barolo, warm spice, balsamic and floral notes - mid weight in structure but with a solid framework behind the fruit. One of the best value wines in the range.

The 2014 Barolo Pira is a very pretty wine, but it is also quite open, both in its aromatics, and structural feel, where the wine feels unusually ample. Dark spice, tobacco, worn-in leather and mint are nicely laced together. This is a superb effort for the year, but I would not plan on cellaring it for too long, as it is quite open for a young Barolo, by Roagna standards. Relative to the other wines in this lineup, the Pira comes across as a touch flat and lacking in body. Much of that is attributable to the vintage. 91 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Faset 2014 £395 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Faset is a historic cru, close to Asili and the Rocche di Barbaresco which produces incredibly elegant wines. 2013 was the first vintage of this wine, a small parcel of vines that Luca and Alfredo rent.

The 2014 Barbaresco Faset is laced with sweet red cherry, mint, wildflowers, licorice and orange peel. Soft, and inviting, with lovely inner perfume, the 2014 will drink well with minimal cellaring. This is an especially soft, open-knit style, and yet there is plenty of Nebbiolo persistence and overall grip. The 2014 is a solid debut. It doesn't take much to see where the Faset is likely to go in coming vintages. 92 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo del Comune di Barolo 2014 £395 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

A new wine in 2013, it is an old parcel from the Terlo vineyard in the centre of Barolo that belongs to Luca’s girlfriend’s family. Vines were planted in 1968 and Alfredo started helping them with the vines in 2011. Only a tiny amount produced – a little over 1000 bottles.

The 2014 Barolo del Comune di Barolo is a gorgeous entry-level wine in Luca Roagna's range. Sweet spice, tobacco, dried rose petal, orange peel, menthol and pine give the 2014 a distinctly balsamic profile that is hugely appealing. Medium in body, yet potent and classically austere (as these wines tend to be), the 2014 is supremely delicious. The bouquet alone is incredibly enticing. The Barolo del Comune di Barolo is made entirely from a small parcel in the Terlo cru, but Luca Roagna does not own the site, so he prefers to bottle it under the village designation rather than as a vineyard designate. The 2014 is a real overachiever in its peer group for the year. I loved it. 92 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Pajè VV 2014 £795 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case, OWC)

Vines here were planted in 1937. It is the wine that often has the most to say, but which needs the most time to unfurl and hit its stride (at least 10 years!).

The 2014 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti captures everything that makes Nebbiolo so seductive. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2014 offers up a striking range of spice, floral and dried fruit character with an expression of weightless power and transparency that only Nebbiolo offers. Readers should expect a delicate Barbaresco. Other wines in this range offer power and/or finesse, but the Pajè Vecchie Viti is all about elusive, ethereal beauty. I especially admire how the wine gains structure and depth with time in bottle. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Asili VV 2014 £795 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case, OWC)

The youngest vines here are a mere 45 years old, the oldest closer to one hundred! It is a very elegant expression ofNebbiolo and as a result, needs a bit less ageing in wood (3 ½ - 4 years as opposed to 5 years with Pajè). Always has grace, lift, lacy red fruit and an effortless, silky texture.

The 2014 Barbaresco Asili Vecchie Viti is endowed with striking inner sweetness and the pure raciness that is the single most important Asili signature. Kirsch, hard candy, mint, blood orange, pomegranate and mint. Medium in body and yet wonderfully resonant, the 2014 captures all the best the vintage has to offer. It is a ridiculously beautiful wine. In a word: stunning! 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Montefico VV 2014 £795 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case, OWC)

This vineyard has a cooler climate, the exposition is different (more SE) and this parcel is always the last one to be harvested. Often, this has musky, sandalwood notes and is incredibly complex.

The 2014 Barbaresco Montefico Vecchie Viti is laser-like in its focus. Then again, we are talking about Montefico. Linear and driven in feel, the 2014 is going to appeal most to readers who like super-classic, austere wines. Montefico is nervous on its own, but in this cold vintage it is especially tight. I can't wait to taste it with bottle age. Tobacco, dried cherry, crushed flowers, cedar, orange peel, anise, sage, and mint give the 2014 a decidedly earthy, savory feel to play off the super-persistent, long and utterly brilliant finish. 95 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Pira VV 2014 £795 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case, OWC)

Oldest vines from the Pira vineyard in Castiglione Falletto. Always more muscle than the regular Pira. Needs at least 7+ years before you think about opening it.

The 2014 Barolo Pira Vecchie Viti is quite delicate and understated for this wine, which also means it will drink well with minimal cellaring. Macerated dark cherry, menthol, licorice, pine, spice, sweet tobacco and leather all develop in the glass. Next to the straight Pira, the Vecchie Vigne has an extra kick of mid-palate sweetness and richness that is quite attractive. For a young Roagna Barolo, the 2014 is very enticing and also accessible. 92 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbaresco Crichët Pajé 2011 £1,595 c/s In Bond (3 bottles per case, OWC)

This is from a part of Pajé that has the highest limestone content of all of their vineyards, so needs longer ageing (at least 8 years). Crichët in Piemontese means the top of the small hill. Exotic, the Clos St Denis of Piedmont. The tannins become exceptionally fine with extended ageing and the complexity and level of finesse is mind-blowing.

Just bottled, the 2011 Barbaresco Crichët Pajè is unbelievably refined. Sweet red cherry, rosewater, mint, dried flowers, pine and kirsch give the 2011 an upper register of perfume that is utterly beguiling. Silky and classy to the core, the 2011 is the most sensual Crichët Pajè I can remember tasting. There is plenty of tannin, that is clear, but it is also pretty much buried by the sheer luxuriousness of the fruit. This is such a gorgeous and complete wine. There is just an unreal amount of freshness for this dry, torrid year. Wow!! 98+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo

7: Aldo Conterno

The 2015 vintage began with a winter marked by plenty of snow, providing the soil with an excellent supply of water. Combined with mild spring temperatures from February on, this factor brought forward the vegetative cycle, which meant that bud break and flowering were earlier than in 2014. A series of rainfalls between the end of May and the first ten days of June replenished the water supply for the summer, that was dry and hot with temperatures well above 30°C. Grapes ripened ten days earlier than 2014 and the fruit were the healthiest in recent years, with no particular protective measures needing to be taken as the climate made a decisive contribution to limiting the development of fungal diseases. Nebbiolo ripened perfectly; the end of summer climatic conditions allowed an impressive accumulation of polyphenols. The excellent quality of the tannins emerging on analysis will certainly ensure elegant, long-lasting wines with good structure. In general, considering the great balance shown in the ripening data we can say without any shadow of doubt that all the conditions are in place for a truly great vintage.

Barolo Bussia 2015 £350 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2015 Barolo Bussia is painted in the broadest of brush strokes when compared to the other wines tasted this year, which each hail from their own specific micro cru within the larger Bussia vineyard. This makes sense, because this wine sees fruit sourced from a much wider net. You do get a great sense of the vintage intensity and succulence with pretty layers of sweet fruit, rose, tilled earth and delicate button mushroom. This wine shows its pedigree with confidence. Some 15,000 bottles were made. 93 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate Gorgeous aromas of dark berries, cedar and very ripe fruit that follow through to a full body, deep and dense tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Plush. Drink in 2022 and beyond. 96 Points, James Suckling

Barolo Bussia Cicala 2015

£620 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2015 Barolo Bussia Cicala is like a little steam train that keeps pushing forward. The wine shows the forward momentum and power of the vintage, imparting ripe and rich primary intensity along the way. This steady and elegant expression of Nebbiolo reveals dried blackberry, tar, licorice, smoke and white truffle. The wine's approach is broad and textured as it rolls over the palate. Some 6,000 bottles were produced. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Perfumed and very bright with dried flowers, dark berries and a sandalwood undertone. Full body, integrated tannins and a soft and polished finish. Very pretty and structured. Harmonious. Measured. Drink in 2023 or later. 96 Points, James Suckling

Barolo Bussia Colonnello 2015 £620 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Of these four Barolos from Poderi Aldo Conterno, the 2015 Barolo Bussia Colonnello (with a mere 5,000 bottles made) shows the most focused precision. This wine offers a very fine and detailed bouquet that is distinguished by linear fruit, spice and mineral. Those aromas feel elongated and extended, both in terms of their volume and length. This impression is especially strong in a warm vintage like 2015, which brings intense and richly concentrated fruit to the table. This wine is extremely elegant and generous. 94+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate The luster of new oak shines bright here, as do the very bright and assertively ripe cherries and red plums, as well as orange zest. The tannins are a highlight with a very fluid and fleshy core of red fruit flavor, building to a tight and long finish. This is regal Barolo. Try from 2023. 98 Points, James Suckling

Barolo Bussia Romirasco 2015 £1,050 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2015 Barolo Bussia Romirasco happily shows the exuberant nature of the warm vintage with a joyous and beautifully ripe quality of fruit. This vintage underlines the concept of abundance and texture, although you could correctly conclude that it is less forthcoming in terms of linearity and depth. However, my hunch is that this broader and denser vintage will age just as gracefully over time as the thinner, cooler and more ethereal ones. Dark fruit, smoke, tar and tobacco appear on the finish here. Some 6,000 bottles were produced. 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate This is very bright and floral with white-truffle and dark-berry aromas. Some white pepper. Full-bodied, chewy and rich with beautiful density and brightness. So silky and rich. Long, flavorful finish. Drink in 2022. 97 Points, James Suckling

Barolo Granbussia Riserva 2010

£1,675 c/s In Bond (3 bottles per case) £1,115 per magnum In Bond (1 magnum per case)

Glorious aromas of roses and other flowers with blackberries and ripe plums. Spectacular. Perfection. Full-bodied, firm and chewy with polished and tight tannins. Slightly dusty. Great length and beauty. Very, very persistent on the palate. Needs another two or three years to soften, but already a classic. Less than 3,000 bottles were produced. 97 Points, James Suckling

8. Bartolo Mascarello

“My interest is in understanding the differences between vintages year after year, rather than chasing any single great vintage."

Maria Teresa Mascarello Maria Teresa Mascarello describes 2015 as a year with significant rain during the early part of the growing season, followed by seven weeks of uninterrupted very high temperatures from the last week of June through mid-August. The crop was clean and healthy. As a result, Mascarello gave her 2015 Barolo lots 35-40 days on the skins, with submerged cap maceration following the alcoholic fermentation. But those are really just details. More than anything else, Mascarello turned out a riveting, brilliant Barolo that is very clearly one of the wines of the vintage. Don't miss it!

Barolo 2015 £1,300 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

A positively stunning wine, Maria Teresa Mascarello's 2015 Barolo is very clearly one of the wines of the year. This is the first vintage to incorporate fruit from a parcel in Bussia next to Mascarello's Dolcetto and Freisa that takes the place of San Lorenzo, which was recently replanted. Rich and soaring in the glass, with stunning textural intensity, the 2015 dazzles from the very first taste. Silky tannins give the wine tremendous near-term appeal, but the 2015 also has the depth and pedigree to drink well for many years and decades to come. Orange peel, mint, crushed rose petal and anise add classic shades of Nebbiolo nuance to this striking, deeply expressive Barolo. 97 Points, Antonio Galloni Maria Teresa Mascarello remembers the 2015 summer as being very hot, so hot it was hard to get restful sleep at night without air conditioning, especially from the end of June to the first week of August. Temperatures dropped at the end of the season in time to maintain lively freshness and acidity. That interchange between hot and cool contributed to a very successful vintage and steady fruit ripening. Her 2015 Barolo is a tad more accessible overall, with dark and luscious fruit that emerges beautifully from the bouquet. Only the Rue vineyard, one of the blending components for this wine, saw a decrease in yields because of powdery mildew, which can be a problem at that site instead of downy mildew (which is avoided because this vineyard benefits from more winds and breezes). This is also the first vintage in which the San Lorenzo vineyard is not included in the blend. That site went offline in 2015 because the old vines were removed, the earth was left to rest for two years and the site was replanted in 2017. These young Nebbiolo vines may go to a Langhe Nebbiolo wine in the near term, although a final decision has not been made yet. So, to recap, the vineyards used to make this edition are Canubbi (this estate prefers this traditional spelling rather than "Cannubi"), Rue, Rocche dell'Annunziata and Bussia (Monrobiolo). A tiny part of fruit from a site in the Barolo township called Nelso is also added (otherwise planted to Dolcetto and Freisa). The wine is put together with amazing precision to offer beautiful fullness, freshness and balance from this textbook growing season. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo 2014 £1,200 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £500 per magnum In Bond (1 magnum per case)

Maria Teresa Mascarello's 2014 Barolo has put on a good bit of weight since I first tasted it, yet it remains nervous, tightly wound and compact - which is to say, very much in the style of the year. Time in the glass brings out a host of bright red cherry, pomegranate, mint, leather and orange peel nuances, but only with reluctance. The 2014 is a positively electric Barolo, but it likely won't be ready to charm anytime soon. Readers should plan on cellaring it for at least a handful of years. Sadly, production is down by 40%. 94+ Points, Antonio Galloni Here is another very successful expression from one of the appellation's legendary estates at the heart of Barolo. The 2014 Barolo is light and delicate in appearance with a delightful bouquet of wild rose, forest berry and blue fruit. Violets and lavender give the bouquet a pretty sense of lift and intensity that reminds you of the cool climate and long growing season that characterizes this vintage. This wine also offers evident freshness with bright berry flavors and a subtle feeling of crisp crunchiness. The tannins are superbly integrated within the silky and streamlined body of this elegant Barolo. This wine will surely offer exciting bottle evolution. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barbera d’Alba 2017 £475 c/s In Bond (12 bottles per case)

The 2017 Barbera d'Alba is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty – no great surprise as it’s from Bartolo Mascarello! Plump, racy and exuberant, the 2017 retains tons of finesse and overall freshness. The purity of the fruit that really stands out here. Don't miss it.

9: Brovia

“This is a stellar set of 2015’s from Elena Brovia and Alex Sanchez. These are some of the bigger, richer 2015’s readers will come across, and yet the wines show impeccable balance. The 2015’s spent a total of two years in cask (as opposed to the more typical two and half years) followed by eight months in steel.” Antonio Galloni Alex Sanchez of the Brovia estate in Castiglione Falletto offers another solution. He describes 2015 as a very good year, with elegance based on grapes with richness as well as depth, tannins that are well-integrated, and plenty of freshness. 'In warm years we try to keep the yields higher or, rather, do less green harvesting in order to have less sugar accumulation in the berries, to maintain a good level of acidity and end up with less concentrated wines.' Canopy management was crucial with less leaf plucking than normal in order to protect the grapes from the burning sun. He also pointed out that if you leave more leaves and if you have a denser canopy the vine will focus less on grape ripening. Sanchez considers the quality of the tannins of utmost importance. “One of the problems in warm years is to achieve round and sweet tannins. In cool years there are lots of tannins, but if the weather holds, they have more time to ripen, whereas in a hot year this process may be cut short.”

Barolo 2015 £250 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Always stunning value and the perfect encapsulation of the Brovia house style. The Barolo 'normale' is comprised 60% of a portion of their holdings in Brea and 40% of the younger vines of their three crus in Castiglione Falletto. One feels both the spicy, boisterous generosity of Serralunga d’Alba and the mineral thrust of Castiglione Falletto in this wine, and the 2015 is a particularly layered, dynamic version, offering excellent concentration but relative accessibility at this early stage. Highly recommended.

Barolo Brea Vigna Ca’ Mia 2015 £415 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £150 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Serralunga d’Alba. Lustrous mid ruby. Very compact and closed on the nose. Noble and backward with a peppery touch while with aeration it shows brooding depth. Slumbering complexity with hints of iron. Austere but perfectly balanced palate with great depth of cherry fruit, but very slow to open up and with persistent, underlying grainy stalky tannins and a perfect dose of sappy acidity on a long, savoury cherry finish. This will need time, but its build and structure nears perfection. (WS) 18 Points, JancisRobinson.com Very fresh and vibrant with flowers and oranges buttressing the ripe berry character. Full-bodied, chewy and structured with a rich and powerful finish. Beautiful intensity at the end. Drink in 2022 and onwards. 94 Points, James Suckling The 2015 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia captures all the best the vintage has to offer. Black cherry, plum, espresso, sage, menthol, licorice and leather are all kicked up a few notches in a decidedly dark, strapping Barolo that screams with Serralunga character. Exotic, dark and totally alluring, the 2015 has a very bright future, but readers should be prepared to be patient, as the tannins clearly need time to soften. 94+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2015 £415 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £150 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Castiglione Falletto. Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Compact, lifted, savoury cherry fruit nose with hints of black pepper, iron and laurel. With aeration mineral notes become more and more prominent. Ripe, savoury fruit with plenty of clayey tannins. Long and concentrated, and at the same time a little austere. This will need much more time to really evolve and for the fruit to open up. (WS) 17.5 Points, JancisRobinson.com This has an attractively restrained and focused feel with a super taut and refined edge. Aromas and flavors of fresh strawberries and wild cherries. This has impressive balance and pitch-perfect tannin ripeness. Approachable now, this will be best from 2022. 94 Points, James Suckling Brovia's flagship 2015 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is a decidedly full-bodied wine. The richness of this warm vintage comes through loud and clear in an ample, resonant Barolo endowed with serious textural depth. Lifted floral and spice notes add an attractive upper register as the 2015 starts to open up in the glass. Even so, the Rocche stands out for its volume and sheer size, both of which are unusual for this Castiglione Falletto site, where the wines tend to be more lithe. The Rocche appears to be the Barolo most shaped by the growing season in this range. 94+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Villero 2015 £415 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £150 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Castiglione Falletto. Lustrous mid ruby with orange tinges. Fine, aromatic, yet compact nose with sweet, red fruits. Almost a little floral and perfumed with stony minerally notes. Much more closed on the palate, yet with plenty of concentration and finely balanced with integrated acidity running through. Fine, bitter-sweet chewy tannins that build up on the finish. Closes up and needs much more time than the nose would initially have you believe. Its austerity doesn't embrace right now; but bodes well for the future. (WS) 17.5 Points, JancisRobinson.com Aromas of praline, honey, orange peel and cherries follow through to a full body, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. Beautiful intensity and power. Drink in 2022. 94 Points, James Suckling The 2015 Barolo Villero is a very pretty, mid-weight wine. Silky tannins and beautifully expressive aromatics give the Villero considerable finesse. On the palate, though, the 2015 is far less expressive. That is not entirely surprising, as the Villero often needs a few years to truly blossom. Sweet floral and spice notes start to open with time in the glass, but the Villero is not an especially forthcoming 2015 Barolo. 93+ Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Garblèt Sue' 2015 £375 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £130 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Castiglione Falletto. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. The spiciest nose of the 2015 Brovia Barolos so far. Hints of laurel and a touch of liquorice and Moroccan leather and with aeration raspberry and cherry. Savoury intensity. Really elegant and supple palate with the fresh acidity peaking on the finish and underlying sandy tannins showing their muscle. (WS) 17+ Points, JancisRobinson.com Lots of ripe fruit that shows plum and berry character with dried flowers, such as lavender. Full body. Juicy finish. Drink in 2020 and onwards. 91 Points, James Suckling The 2015 Barolo Garblèt Sue' is dense and powerful in the glass. A rush of black cherry, plum, lavender, iron and sage literally burst from the glass. Ample, full-bodied and intense, the Garblèt Sue' is another stellar wine in this range. The typically incisive Garblèt Sue' tannins are nearly buried by the sheer richness of the fruit. Today, the Garblèt Sue' is distinguished by its wild, feral profile and huge core of fruit. In this vintage, the Garblèt is the overachiever in the range relative to how it shows in most vintages. 94 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Riserva 150 Anniversario Rocche-Villero 2005 £225 per magnum In Bond (1 magnum per case)

The 2005 Barolo Riserva 150 Anniversario Rocche-Villero, bottled only in magnum to celebrate the estate's 150th anniversary, has blossomed into a gorgeous wine. Ample, generous and inviting, the 2005 brings together the aromatics and sensuality of Rocche with the darker fruit and structural weight of Villero, a compelling combination, to say the least. The creamy, beautifully layered finish only adds to the wine's considerable appeal. Readers who own the 2005 are in for a real treat. 95 Points, Antonio Galloni

Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggione 2016 £150 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Made with 100% Nebbiolo from Valmaggiore vineyard. The name of the wine is due to a printing error and since then Brovia has retained the name. Always drinks beautifully in its youth. Aromas of cherry, blackberry, strawberry, earth, tobacco, licorice and spices. On the palate good body, structured, good complexity and acidity. Soft tannins. Long and persistent finish.

Barbera d'Alba Sori del Drago 2017 £195 c/s In Bond (12 bottles per case)

Bright, focused and lively in the glass, with plenty of trademark Barbera acidity. Bright red stone fruits, flowers, mint and sweet spices all jump from the glass. The steel aged Sori del Drago is all about freshness, yet there is plenty of underlying depth and stuffing to ensure a handful of years of very fine drinking. Drago is what all Barbera should taste like and aspire to be!

Dolcetto d’Alba Vignavillej 2017 £160 c/s In Bond (12 bottles per case)

10: G.B. Burlotto Fabio Alessandria describes 2015 as hot, but without extremes and good diurnal shift at the end of the season. Alessandria gave his 2015s about 22 days on the skins. All of the wines were made with fully destemmed fruit except for the flagship Barolo Monvigliero, which, as always, was done with 100% whole clusters and submerged cap maceration following the alcoholic fermentation. On the subject of Monvigliero, while that wine has gotten most of the attention here following the exceptional 2013, the other Barolos in the range are every bit as compelling.

Barolo 2015 £295 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Burlotto's 2015 Barolo is absolutely gorgeous. Pliant and open knit, the straight Barolo captures all of the natural richness of the vintage. Succulent red cherry, plum, lavender, rose petal, spice and new leather all meld together in a supple, inviting Barolo that will be impossible to resist in its youth. This is such a beautiful and alluring wine. The base of the Burlotto Barolo is built on Breri, which is adjacent to Monvigliero, plus the portions of Rocche dell' Olmo and Neirane that don't make it into the Acclivi. This is a positively stellar wine. Don't miss it. 92 Points, Antonio Galloni This estate captures the very essence of Barolo from Verduno, that, to my palate, also shows a hint of wildness or maybe some exotic character. Winemaking at Comm. G.B. Burlotto is traditional, and for this reason, those territory-specific aromas are even more pronounced and easy to recognize. If you had to settle with one Barolo "base" (I know the producers hate this descriptor used for non-vineyard specific Barolo) for the rest of your life, the 2015 Barolo would definitely do the trick. The wine delivers intensity and grace, with pretty background detailing of spice, crushed stone and ash. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Acclivi 2015 £500 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2015 Barolo Acclivi is another stellar wine from Fabio Alessandria and Burlotto and is a blend of fruit from Monvigliero, Rocche dell' Olmo and Neirane, all in Verduno. Bright, perfumed and silky on the palate, the Acclivi is a jewel of a wine. Floral notes appear in the glass, adding lift, perfume and sensuality. All the elements are in the right place. Today, Burlotto's Cannubi and Monvigliero have become hard to find, but savvy readers will want to focus on the Acclivi, a wine that offers superb quality for the money. Another few years in bottle should help some of the fruit soften. 94 Points, Antonio Galloni The 2015 Barolo Acclivi represents a blend of Nebbiolo from various hilltop sites in Verduno that have been selected for the quality of their fruit. The wine takes the concept of a Barolo "base" up one notch, because it represents a special selection of fruit that is not limited to a single parcel. This expression is grounded and even a bit heavier at its core, with more dark fruit and thickness that becomes its defining characteristic. This is especially true in a vintage like 2015 that already starts off with robust and sun-darkened fruit. The wine is not necessarily more accessible—because it is not—but it does offer a thicker caliber of Nebbiolo fruit. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Cannubi 2015 £750 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is another dizzying wine from Burlotto. A rush of dark cherry, plum, hard candy licorice, violet and spice all hit the palate. Powerful and vertical in the glass, the Cannubi simply has it all. I would give the 2015 a good bit of time to shed some of its considerable baby fat. Powerful, dense and packed, the Cannubi is not as showy or seductive as the Monvigliero, but it has so much to offer, especially with a bit of bottle age. What a magnificent wine it is! 97 Points, Antonio Galloni The 2015 Barolo Cannubi is a very delicate and streamlined expression that puts one little foot forward in front of the next with timid steps before it starts to pick up speed and find its stride. That slow start is important to the character and quality of the wine because it means that you will find something a little different each time you put your nose to the glass. I like the wine better each time I go back to the glass. I'm sure I will love it even more five to ten years from now. 96+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Monvigliero 2015 £1,100 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is a wine of pure and total seduction. The warm vintage has filled out the wine's frame beautifully. The interplay of ripe, succulent 2015 fruit and aromatic intensity from the whole clusters yields a positively stunning, breathtaking wine of the very highest level. Once again, Burlotto's Barolo Monvigliero takes a place among the most compelling wines of the vintage. Readers who can find it should not hesitate! 98 Points, Antonio Galloni I mentioned that slightly wild side of Verduno in a previous review for Comm. G.B. Burlotto. For further clarity on this point, put your nose into the beautiful 2015 Barolo Monvigliero. This is a subdued and graceful wine that grows in intensity the longer it stays in the glass. The wine offers blue flower aromas with violets, wild rose, cumin seed, saffron and crushed mineral. This wine plays its best cards when you focus on the smallest details, and then suddenly, those tiny brush strokes explode into a big-picture, panoramic view of one of the most celebrated vineyard sites in Barolo. 97 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate Pelaverga di Verduno 2017 £125 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

This Italian variety is rich in a compound called rotundone, which is a sesquiterpene ketone and part of the monoterpene family. It can be found in Syrah, Vespolino, Grüner Veltliner, Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon. To most of us, it is identified as a huge whiff of freshly milled white pepper. Others link it to the smell of thyme or marjoram. Geekiness aside, this is fascinating to me because I so often find those white pepper aromas related to rotundone within Italy's large patrimony of indigenous grapes. It is such a specific and easily identifiable smell. It is what makes this wine so special. Besides the crushed white pepper, you get forest fruit, pressed violets, wild strawberry and moist earth. This is an easy-drinking wine to consume within the next few years. Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

11: Cappellano “Barolo fans will find much to like and talk about in these wines from Augusto Cappellano. The 2014s have turned out better than I had hoped. From barrel, both Barolos were a bit light, but time seems to have been a friend. I find more richness and completeness in the 2015s. Readers who can find the wines will likely want to cellar both vintages, if for no other reason to see how the wines age. Years ago, Baldo Cappellano asked me not to rate his wines, so all Cappellano wines show up on our database as NR.” Antonio Galloni The famously difficult 2014 vintage provided Augusto with his biggest challenge yet. The severe sorting such a vintage required means that quantities—already minuscule even in a normal year—are down significantly, but those fortunate enough to access Cappellano’s 2014’s will find them to be sublime.

Barolo Piè Rupestris 2014 £185 per bottle In Bond £1,100 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2014 Barolo Barolo Rupestris is a very pretty, fragrant wine. In this vintage, the Rupestris is a bit more ethereal than it usually is, and yet there is a lovely underpinning of structure that gives the wine its shape. Beautifully perfumed and gracious, the 2014 Rupestris opens with enticing scents of sweet tobacco, mint, dried herbs, orange peel, dried cherry, cedar and rose petal. The 2014 should drink well with minimal cellaring, but I expect it will also age gracefully while retaining its somewhat delicate feel. NR, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Piè Franco 2014 £390 per bottle In Bond £1,100 c/s In Bond (3 bottles per case)

The 2014 Barolo Piè Franco is an anomaly. Poor weather hammered yields in this already challenged parcel within Cappellano's Gabutti vineyard. Yields were down a punishing 50%. Because of practical considerations related to small volume of wine, the 2014 spent less time in oak than normal. Over time, the 2014 has gained a measure of inner sweetness and depth it did not show in barrel, which is a very good thing. Kirsch, orange peel, cedar, mint, wild flowers and spice notes give the 2014 a decidedly exotic feel. Readers should expect an especially gracious, airy Barolo Piè Franco in 2014. NR, Antonio Galloni

Barbera d’Alba Gabutti 2014 £475 c/s In Bond (12 bottles per case)

The 2014 Barbera d'Alba is an intriguing wine in that it speaks more to the personality of the estate than to the year, or even to Barbera. The 2014 is a Cappellano wine, and that's pretty much all there is to it. Succulent, pliant and expressive, the 2014 has a lot to say. On the palate, the 2014 expresses the mid-weight style of the year. Dark chocolate, plum and spice meld into the super-expressive finish. The 2014 was aged in a combination of casks and new tonneau, with the added textural depth from the smaller format oak quite evident. NR, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Chinato NV £40 bt In Bond (1 bottle per case)

Dr. Giuseppe Cappellano, a pharmacist by trade, developed this sublime mixture of vintage Barolo with herbs and spices steeped in alcohol back in the late 1800s—literally as a digestive aid and stomach-settling concoction. The top-secret recipe has been passed down from father to son via handwritten letter over the generations. The results of this arcane process are nothing short of sublime - On the palate, the Chinato’s marked sweetness is buffered by its sheer depth and complexity - after all, 50% of the stuff is traditionally vinified and aged single-vintage Barolo from a great vineyard in Serralunga d’Alba. A heady melange of herbs and spices, coupled with the elixir’s rich, chocolatey depths, pull both mouth and mind in infinite directions, but the whole experience is still balanced, composed, and just flat-out absurdly delicious!

Grappa di Barolo NV £100 bt Inc VAT (1 bottle, 50 cl)

The marc used comes from Cappellano’s Nebbiolio grapes. Originally, they intended to use only Nebbiolo Pie’ Franco (ungrafted) grapes, but the quantity was not enough for a single distillation, so they added the Rupestris grapes. Gianni Capovilla, a master distiller, gets the best out of the grapes after fermentation and does everything possible to preserve the purity. He ages the distilled liquid at cold temperature during the winter months so that it acquires elegance; later, he brings it to the right strength with spring water. The result is a grappa available in limited quantities (less than 240 bottles) but characterised by the polish and purity that is Cappellano.

12: Cavallotto

“Cavallotto may very well be the greatest Barolo producer few

people have ever heard of, something that continues to mystify me.” Antonio Galloni

It's nice to see Cavallotto finally getting some serious recognition. This small, family-run property has been making stellar wines for quite some time, but for some reason the outside world has only caught on relatively recently. The Cavallotto Barolos seem to just keep getting better and better with each passing vintage. This venerable, family-run estate in Castiglione Falletto is a great source for reasonably priced Barolos that will age several decades easily. The Cavallotto family claims sole ownership of the beautiful Bricco Boschis cru in the Castiglione Falletto district, where they have been growing Nebbiolo since 1929 and bottling their own wine since 1948. These richly structured wines place emphasis on elegance and longevity, attributable to excellent vineyards in the Bricco Boschis cru and traditional long maturation periods in large Slavonian-oak casks. The land has been organically farmed since the 1970s. Cavallotto divided Bricco Boschis into three parcels: two plots are blended to make the flagship Bricco Boschis Barolo, but the third plot, vigna San Giuseppe, is also designated and bottled as a single cru riserva.

Barolo Bricco Boschis 2015 £265 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £95 per magnum In Bond (1 magnum per case)

I had tasted this wine from barrel last year, and the wine was already shaping up beautifully back then. Staying the course, the 2015 Barolo Bricco Boschis shows extreme elegance and finesse. These are the characteristics of what is surely one of the most beautiful vineyard sites in Barolo. The Bricco Boschis cru affords a panoramic view onto much of the Langhe, with snowcapped Alps in the background. Barolo from Castiglione Falletto tends to show characteristics that are very fine, precise and linear. That's fundamentally what you get here despite the more exuberant and fleshy 2015 vintage. This wine is truly beautiful. Some 27,700 bottles were made. (June 2019) 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate Castiglione Falletto. Total skin maceration of 28 days. Bottled first week of September. Mid ruby with orange tinges. Subdued nose hinting at red rather than dark fruit. A little reluctant on the palate, but with nervy acidity and plenty of substance and sandy tannins. The lasting impression is one of freshness, concentration and excellent balance, but demands time to develop further. (WS) 17.5 Points, JancisRobinson.com

Barolo Riserva Bricco Boschis vigna San Giuseppe 2013

£570 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

£200 per magnum In Bond (1 magnum per case)

£400 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case)

The estate’s selection of the finest vineyard within the Bricco Boschis cru is San Giuseppe, the epitome of Castiglione Falletto: a powerful, majestic wine of absolute authority whose sweetness comes with time. 100% Nebbiolo grown in calcareous clay soils. The grapes are macerated on the skins in steel vats for 26 days; the wine is then aged in Slovenian oak casks of different capacity for 4 years. 1,500 cases produced. This wine has not yet been released to critics for review, but we are pretty sure it will receive some high scores!

The Riserva Vignolo is from a different hill in Castiglione Falleto than the Bricco Boschis site where the Cantina sits. It is a deep and powerful wine, with incredible fruit intensity. Again, this is made in a traditional age-worthy style with a structure that requires some bottle aging for best results. This is another long-lasting Riserva from Cavallotto and one that will reward patience.

Barolo Riserva Vignolo 2013

£450 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2013 Barolo Riserva Vignolo surprises for the sheer darkness and saturation of its color. Upfront and without too much bother, the wine offers immediate richness and concentration with dark berry fruit, plum and dried cherry. There is a lot of intensity here, but the wine is more horizontal and broad in character than it is vertical per se. In other words, it shows a heavy center of gravity, and its very character is focused on richness and power. This wine ages in 20- and 100-hectoliter Slavonian oak botti for up to five years before its commercial release. Production is exactly 6,666 bottles. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

13: Ceretto

In 2012, under the leadership of Alessandro Ceretto, the Ceretto family began the lengthy process of obtaining Organic certification for all of their vineyard holdings. The Ceretto family does not apply herbicides in the vineyards and fertilizes with manure only. Green cover crops are planted between the rows of vines to reinforce soil fertility and structure. And in the single vineyards, natural sprays are applied to vines to boost plant vitality and photosynthetic capacity. All this is aimed at developing a sensitive and healthy vineyard system capable of maintaining its own natural resources over time. In 2014, no single vineyard wines were produced, everything was blended into a generic Barolo – we are delighted to see them back in 2015! “I write this introduction now that a few weeks have passed since I tasted and reviewed these samples from Ceretto. With the benefit of that distance in time, I can say that no set of wines in this entire article on Barolo and Barbaresco has made a stronger impact on me than these. I am awestruck by the extreme quality, grace and elegance presented here. I have no doubt that this is the strongest set of new Ceretto wines I have ever had the privilege to taste. I notice that all the wines are united by an extreme level of silkiness and spot-on tannic management. It is truly something exceptional. Among these new vintages, we also have a new member of the family. Ceretto debuts its 2015 Barolo Bussia from Monforte d'Alba, now adding a wine from a fifth important township in the Barolo appellation. They already produce Barolos from Bricco Rocche in Castiglione Falletto, Cannubi San Lorenzo in Barolo, Brunate in La Morra and Prapò in Serralunga d'Alba. It's hard to choose a favorite, and all these wines—even the Prapò from heavier soils—deliver that extreme silkiness that caught my eye and won my heart.” Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate “This is another terrific series of wines from Ceretto……these mark another step in the direction of finesse that Alessandro Ceretto and his team have been pursuing for the last few years…….. Readers who haven't tasted these wines in a few years absolutely owe it to themselves to do so.” Antonio Galloni

Barolo Bricco Rocche 2015 £745 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Bricco Rocche, located in Castiglione Falletto, the smallest geographic area within the Barolo specification and comprises just over 1 hectare, is one of the most spectacular sites for growing nebbiolo grapes in the Barolo DOCG zone. This perfectly exposed vineyard site is a monopole of the Ceretto family. While "bricco" refers to the "top of the hill" and is usually where the best exposures are found, "rocche" refers to the cliffs surrounding the vineyard.

Instantly attractive and ethereal nose with rich perfume and ripe red cherries and plums, as well as wildflowers and herbs. So beautiful and complex. The palate has such concentration and purity from start to finish. There’s an incredibly deep vein of ripe cherries here, framed in perfectly polished and layered tannins. Great Barolo. Try from 2023. 98 Points, James Suckling Castiglione Falletto. Mid ruby with orange tinges. A little oak-driven at first on the nose, but at the same time very minerally. The focus is dark fruit and with aeration showing great depth. Gorgeous, rich, coating tannins and long and elegant palate that is powerful at the same time. (WS) 18.0 Points, JancisRobinson.com

The 2015 Barolo Bricco Rocche is the most delicate and finessed of the four Ceretto 2015 Barolos. All of the signatures that make this Castiglione Falletto site so compelling come through effortlessly. Bright, medium in body and finely sculpted, the 2015 speaks to precision above all else. Like all of these 2015, the Bricco Rocche is embryonic. I can't wait to taste it in another few years. Today, the 2015 comes across as tightly wound and classically austere, but in the best sense of those terms. In other words, it is a wine for the cellar. 95 Points, Antonio Galloni The 2015 Barolo Bricco Rocche is gorgeous, and the key here is elegance. The winemaking team at Ceretto has finely integrated the tannins so that the wine comes out as super silky and fine. Showing all the delicate balsamic notes and dark fruit typical of the variety, this Barolo with fruit from Castiglione Falletto has just about everything that you expect from this prestigious denomination, surely even deserving a filet mignon to accompany it when you do open the bottle down the road from today. Some 4,000 bottles were made. 98 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Brunate 2015 £470 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Brunate is one of the most representative vineyards of the Commune of La Morra and has always been considered one of points of reference for the entire appellation. The Ceretto family owns, in Brunate, just over five and a half hectares. Very attractive red cherries and berries with plenty of sweetly fragrant spice and warm stones. This offers exceptional power and rich, ripe fruit on the palate. Really balanced and succulent with seamlessly arranged tannins. So good. Drink or hold. 96 Points, James Suckling Lustrous mid ruby. Ripe cherry intermingled with oatmeal notes. Elegant and a little different from many Brunates in that this is more elegant, less spicy and more floral and with less dark fruit. Juicy and elegant palate weight with great impact of crunchy tannins on the finish. The polish of oak shows up on the finish only. (WS) 17+ Points, JancisRobinson.com The 2015 Barolo Brunate is a powerful, muscular wine that is going to need a number of years to come around. Sinewy tannins enshroud a core of deep fruit as this heady, layered Barolo gradually opens in the glass. Orange peel, star anise, mint, pine and dried flowers add striking aromatic complexity, but it is the wine's staying power and overall structure that leave the deepest impression. The 2015 Brunate is shaping up to be stellar. That's pretty much all there is to it. 94 Points, Antonio Galloni The 2015 Barolo Brunate is yet another silky and fine red wine with perhaps a tiny bit more structure and firmness at the back than the other single-vineyard offerings from Ceretto. It is beautifully accessible and oh so fine and elegant. The wine is aged in 300-liter French oak (with 10% new oak) for 12 months, followed by 24 months in Austrian oak casks. I absolutely love this wine. It's a cru that will impress at any wine-tasting party, or I can picture it at dinner with a deliciously rare steak au poivre. Some 13,000 bottles were made. 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Prapò 2015 £480 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £165 per magnum In Bond (1 per case) £335 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case)

This wine takes its name from the prestigious Prapò vineyard which was one of the first properties owned by the Ceretto family in Barolo. This vineyard has one of the best exposures on the eastern slopes of Serralunga d'Alba, a world-renowned commune within Barolo. This Barolo shows very pure and vibrant cherries on the nose with light, perfumed nuances that create an ethereal mood. The palate is delivered as a set of succulent and detailed tannins, soaked in red cherries and leading to a long, juicy and impressively concentrated finish. Best to hold for three to five years. 95 Points, James Suckling Serralunga d’Alba. Lustrous mid ruby. Hints of oats and a little closed on the fruit. With more aeration subtle perfume rises up from the glass. Fantastically firm yet polished, chewy tannins finely balanced by fresh acidity. Stylish and muscular at the same time. (WS) 17.5 Points, JancisRobinson.com The 2015 Barolo Prapò is another stellar wine in this range. Iron, smoke, blood orange and a host of mineral/feral notes give the Prapò striking complexity to play off the wine's intense, muscular tannins. Deceptively medium in body, the Prapò packs a serious punch. More than anything else, the Prapò has that distinctive Serralunga interplay of aromatic intensity, fruit depth and structural underpinning that make the best wines from the village so compelling. 94+ Points, Antonio Galloni This is a new wine from Ceretto and a great success for a debut. The 2015 Barolo Bussia comes from one of the largest crus on the map, bordering on the towns of Monforte d'Alba and Barolo, drawing its Nebbiolo fruit from a 7,000-square-meter plot in Bussia Soprana in Monforte d'Alba. Even for such a warm vintage, this wine is as fine and elegant as the other Barolos from this estate. The bouquet seduces with delicate tones of wild berry, white cherry, licorice and truffle. Production stands at 3,500 bottles and 200 magnums. 95+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo 2009 £695 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

The wine ages for at least 10 years from harvest and is produced exclusively in magnum. Extremely limited production (500 magnums). Of the five sub-zones that can be referred to as Cannubi, this is definitely the smallest, with a total area of a little less than 2.5 hectares. The cru, with East / South-East exposure, caps the highest part of Valletta and is the highest point of the entire hilled area, with an altitude of over 315 meters above sea level. The Ceretto family owns the small summit above the sub-zone, comprising a total area of 2300 meters; the vineyard features a widespread presence of old vines (the central body of the vineyard is over 90 years old) cultivated using old methods, which tends to bring out the particular terroir. The sandy soil matrix (Marne of St. Agatha Fossils) and the particular microclimactic conditions (the altitude and excellent ventilation give valuable temperature ranges) make it an exceptionally complex and elegant wine.

14: Giacomo Conterno

There is a lot to look forward to with this year’s releases from Giacomo Conterno. This is first ever year we have three Barolos from three separate sites. The 2015 Barolo Arione is a brand new addition to the range, as it was acquired only recently. If Francia and Cerretta are elegance personified, then Arione is all about the power. This then brings us to the latest Barolo Riserva Monfortino release, from the magnificent 2013 vintage. Monfortino is only made in exceptional vintages, the last vintage produced was the 2010, a wine scored 100 Points by all the critics. This is Italy’s most expensive wine and collected throughout the world. Don’t overlook the fabulous Barberas, they are truly great wines in their own right, as Roberto said, “they are Conterno first, and Barbera second.”

Barolo Francia 2015 £1,025 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £425 per magnum In Bond (1 per case) £895 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Conterno's 2015 Barolo Francia is exquisitely balanced and harmonious from the very first taste. Soaring aromatics and seemingly endless layers of fruit open up in the glass, but there is something about the wine's completeness that is deeply thrilling. Seamless and expansive on the palate, with tremendous resonance, the 2015 Francia is simply magnificent. 95-98 Points, Antonio Galloni What impresses most here is the supreme elegance of the wine. It speaks in hushed whispers, enunciating promises of depth, complexity and mysterious intrigue. The wine unfolds slowly, revealing new elements with each swirl of the glass. Together, these aromas build in intensity and stature to become a magnificent Barolo with a capital B. The bouquet exudes elegance and complexity that will carry it through the ages. When I tasted this wine from barrel last year, I described it as demure. One year later, the wine is bursting with confidence, character and moxie. 97 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Cerretta 2015 £1,025 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £425 per magnum In Bond (1 per case) £895 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case)

The 2015 Barolo Cerretta is so silky, sensual and finessed that it almost doesn't really feel like a Serralunga Barolo at all. Floral overtones and bright, red cherry and plum fruit add to an impression of total elegance. This is such a pretty wine. Naturally, it is still very early for the 2015, a wine that will spend another 8 months or so in cask prior to bottling. Even so, the future is very bright. 93-96 Points, Antonio Galloni The 2015 Barolo Cerretta is influenced by the warm conditions of the vintage with plenty of ripe and succulent fruit, although this vintage differs from the similarly warm 2017 and 2011 harvests in that the 2015 growing season had more moisture locked within the soil. Consequently, this vintage tends to offer cool-climate tannins and structure, giving the wine the ample backbone it needs to carry all those luscious dark nuances. The wine is ripe, profound and makes your mouth salivate. 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Arione 2015 £1,025 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £425 per magnum In Bond (1 per case) £895 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Here in its first release, the 2015 Barolo Arione is a magnificent addition to the Conterno range. Power and gravitas distinguish the Arione from Conterno's Barolos from Cerretta and Francia. Wild cherry, graphite, smoke and leather are some of the many notes that are laced throughout this super-expressive, dense, structured wine. The 2015 is simply dazzling. I can't wait to taste it from bottle. Moreover, it is great to see that such an important and historic parcel ended up in the hands of a grower who knows how to exalt all of the signatures that make Arione such a compelling vineyard. 94-97 Points, Antonio Galloni Introducing the 2015 Barolo Arione. This is the first vintage produced of the newest wine to join the extended and ever-evolving Conterno portfolio. Only three oak casks were produced: the one I tasted from to write this review, one that was auctioned off to charity and the third botte that ended up becoming part of the iconic Monfortino blend. That fruit from the recently acquired Arione vineyard would be deemed good enough to end up in Monfortino tells a lot about how confident Roberto Conterno is in this product. From a tasting point of view, this wine is characterized by richness and density, with a polished mineral note that never hides from view. The richness of the soils in this vineyard correspond to the density and structure of the wine. Most of the vineyard was planted in the 1960s with some replants throughout the 1980s and 1990s. If Francia is elegance, Arione is power. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Monfortino Riserva 2013 £2,750 c/s In Bond (3 bottles per case) £2,100 per magnum In Bond (1 per case) £4,200 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case)

The 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is a huge, towering wine marked by serious fruit intensity and a backbone of firm, classically austere tannins. Certainly next to the 2014 and 2015, the sheer tannic clout of the 2013 is impossible to miss. Sage mint, tobacco and dried flower notes add striking shades of aromatic nuance, but the 2013 is ultimately distinguished by its huge, potent personality. It is sure to thrill those who own it for many decades to come. In 2013, Roberto Conterno did not bottle his Barolo Francia. Instead, he chose to use all of the fruit for the flagship Barolo Monfortino, which up until the present, he had only done once before, in 2002. 99 Points, Antonio Galloni I have been tasting this wine from barrel for the past two years and now finally, abracadabra, the 2013 Barolo Riserva Monfortino is safely housed in bottle. The wine was bottled in June of last year and will hit the market this upcoming October. The Barolo Francia was not produced in 2013 because Roberto Conterno diverted all fruit from that vineyard to this wine. Monfortino was not produced in 2011 or 2012, meaning that this 2013 edition follows directly after the absolutely stunning 2010 vintage (which earned a perfect 100-point score). The two vintages (2010 and 2013) are very similar, strikingly so, but the 2013 vintage registers at a slightly lower structural threshold. The tannins are slightly looser, or softer in the case of this wine. With up to six years in botte, the 2010 vintage is still crunchy and super sharp, while this wine is slightly more succulent and earthy. 98 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate (June 2019)

Barbera d’Alba Vigna Francia 2017 £500 c/s In Bond (12 bottles per case)

The 2017 Barbera d'Alba Francia is ravishingly beautiful. Silky, sensual and impeccably polished, with tremendous palate presence. A rush of sweet red cherry, raspberry and pomegranate fruit punctuates this vivid, radiant Barbera from Conterno. The richness of the warm, dry year is very much in evidence, and yet the wine is superb. 92-95 Points, Antonio Galloni Compared to the expression from the Cerretta vineyard, the 2017 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Francia is even darker in color with more austerity and muscle power at the back. The alcohol reading of the two wines is the same (15.5%), but this expression offers less obvious fruit and more dark mineral instead. The soils in the Francia vineyard see a mix of limestone sand and clay, and this is true of where both the Barbera and the Nebbiolo vines are located. You sense an increased mineral presence in the Francia with iron, salt and scorched earth. This full-throttle Barbera is penetrating and deep. This is a fine expression of the grape, offering exacting detail and precision. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barbera d’Alba Cerretta 2017 £500 c/s In Bond (12 bottles per case)

The Barbera d'Alba Cerretta, which is usually easier to read than the Francia, is dark and ample in 2017. Some of that is of course attributable to the personality of the year. A host of dark red and blue-toned fruits are backed up by quite a bit of structural heft in a decidedly potent Barbera that is going to need time to be at its very best. 91-94 Points, Antonio Galloni Barbera loves a warm vintage, and that's exactly what it got in 2017. Roberto Conterno tells me his favorite recent vintages are 2015, 2016 and 2017. Because of low yields in this hot and dry year, no large-format bottles of the 2017 Barbera d'Alba Cerretta were produced. The Cerretta vineyard is characterized by a higher percentage of clay soils, and this greatly impacts the density and the power of the wines that come from this site. This wine shows dark fruit intensity with some lingering sweetness (followed by 15.5% alcohol). However, the wine also offers concentrated freshness packed tight within the thick fiber of the fruit, and the results are never heavy. This beautiful wine just oozes Barbera typicity with soft and generous layering. 93+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

15: Diego Morra

“The hottest young winemaker in Verduno, making great wines at low prices.”

The Verduno-based family estate of Diego Morra is not that well known, even though its vineyard holdings are considerable. The jewel in the crown is its Monvigliero - we challenge you to find better value great Barolo! Diego Morra is little by little taking back his vines, having previously sold the fruit to others, and is crafting delicious wines under his own name. He is one of the only producers of Pelaverga, just like his cousins the Alessandria’s of Burlotto, an incredibly rare variety which makes peppered strawberry-tasting wines. This is a very refreshing wine which our clientele has discovered and is now demanding.

Barolo 2015 £140 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2015 Barolo is a stellar entry-level wine. Pliant and supple, Diego Morra's straight Barolo offers a striking combination of mid-palate generosity and classic structure. Although the 2015 has enough depth and pedigree to drink well for many years, it is also relatively approachable for a young wine.

The grapes for the ‘straight’ Barolo come from the communes of La Morra (50%) and Verduno (50%).

Barolo Monvigliero 2015

£185 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £65 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Verduno. Tasted blind. Mid ruby. Sweet strawberry fruit with savoury notes and a little rich on the nose. Supple and elegant, yet concentrated strawberry fruit palate. Expressive and succulent and with a layer of gripping tannins. Amazingly light of touch for the exalted fruit concentration. (WS). May 2019. 17+ Points, JancisRobinson.com

There’s plenty of ripeness in this wine, but the overall impression is one of precision in last-minute restraint: The fruit for this beauty was picked at exactly the right time--and crafted in just the right way--to achieve great sweetness of fruit and breadth of flavor on the palate without the slightest whiff of heat or any sense of excess. The oak is just right too, which is to say that it is supportive without being obtrusive. This producer is new to me at this level of quality, and I’ll have an eye peeled in hopes of more excellence in future releases. 93, Michael Franz, Wine Review Online

Verduno Pelaverga 2017 £60 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Pelaverga is a red grape that is used in some of the smallest DOC’s of Italy. It is limited to only 18 hectares in the municipalities of Verduno, La Morra and Roddi in Langhe. There are only 12 producers in the world making Pelaveraga, so this is a really unique wine. Pelaverga is a completely different type of wine than Langhe’s Nebbiolo. It is light red in colour, medium bodied and with typical notes of strawberry and white pepper. Due to its soft tannins it is a good option for lighter dishes such as vegetarian ones. Again, this is a grape that for a long time was forgotten, but then rediscovered, in this case in the 1970’s.

16: Elio Grasso

“Gianluca Grasso's 2015 Barolos are wonderfully nuanced,

polished wines that capture everything the vintage had to offer. Grasso gave his 2015’s 25-30 days of fermentation, followed by another 10 days or so of submerged cap fermentation.

The malos were done in steel and the wine saw about two and a half years of cask prior to being bottled.”

Antonio Galloni

The single vineyard wines from Elio Grasso have always offered superb quality and outstanding value for money compared to other Estates – this year is no exception. We tasted at Elio Grasso the day after Antonio Galloni, who was really impressed with what he had tasted….

Barolo Gavarini Chiniera 2015 £310 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Extremely perfumed, showing lots of rose, lavender and dark-berry character. Full body with intense density and chewiness that gives the wine great structure. Lots of flavor and focus at the finish. Needs five to six years to finish. Drink in 2024. 98 Points, James Suckling The 2015 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is ample, full-bodied and rich on the palate, and yet retains its explosive floral lift and brightness, two of the signatures that are such calling cards of Barolos from this Monforte site. A rush of sweet red cherry, blood orange, chalk, mint and rose petal build in a super-expressive Barolo that hits so many high notes effortlessly. The Gavarini Chiniera is one of the wines of the vintage. Don't miss it. 97 Points, Antonio Galloni Gianluca Grasso did not make this wine in 2014, but in 2015, he found the vintage he was looking for. The 2015 Barolo Gavarini Chiniera is perfectly wonderful. The wine combines power with elegance, showing long determination as it wraps smoothly over the palate. The mature tannins are well integrated within a profound, ripe and round quality of dark fruit. That juicy and succulent core shows graceful notes of violet, licorice, cola, moist earth and white truffle. Grasso knew that this would be a great vintage and he nailed it. 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Ginestra Casa Mate 2015 £300 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Complex aromas of figs, ripe strawberries and fresh mushrooms. Full body, firm and tight tannins with a solid core of fruit and a long, linear finish. Great length. Drink in 2024. 96 Points, James Suckling Grasso's 2015 Barolo Ginestra Casa Matè is a dense, full-bodied Barolo that is going to need at least a few years to start unwinding. Dark fruit and a host of mentholated, balsamic notes all run through the 2015. Broad shoulders and tons of depth give the wine its distinctive feel. The Ginestra Casa Matè is usually more expressive at this stage than it is today. Time in the glass soften some of the edges, but the 2015 is a wine to cellar and then drink for the next 20-30 years. There is so much to look forward to. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni There is slightly more structure to the 2015 Barolo Ginestra Casa Maté than to the Gavarini Chiniera of the same vintage, and the only differences here are the soils and that this fruit is harvested about ten days later. It's a pretty fascinating demonstration of the power of the single vineyard. The Gavarini Chiniera parcel offers slightly sandier soils, whereas this site is composed of more clay. In rainy years, the Gavarini Chiniera vineyard drains more effectively, whereas the Ginestra's soil retains more moisture in the hot and dry vintages. As a result, in vintages such as this one, Ginestra shows a more compact nature and, in general, provides more impact and more structure. This is a very robust expression, extremely linear and tight. The Ginestra Casa Maté narrowly wins this round. It's another beautiful Barolo. 97 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Special offer: Barolo 2014 at £205 c/s In Bond if taken in conjunction with any of the wines above. Barolo 2014

£215 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

In 2014, Gianluca Grasso opted to bottle one Barolo that is a blend of juice from Gavarini and Chiniera. Grasso's 2014 Barolo is a beautiful wine that captures the personality of the vintage. Lithe, perfumed and aromatic, the 2014 exudes class from start to finish. The flavors are wonderfully bright and vibrant, with plenty of red fruit and expressive floral and overtones. The 2014 is a pretty, feminine wine that may very well surprise down the road. The Gavarini fruit saw 25 days on the skins, while fermentation and maceration for the Ginestra lots was 30-45 days, all with submerged cap. When bottling time came, Grasso preferred the blended Barolo to what would have been vineyard designate Gavarini and Ginestra Barolos. 92 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barbera d’Alba Vigna Martina 2016

£110 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £40 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

The Barbera grape can often act like Nebbiolo showing its best results in the later vintages that end on a cool note. Those conditions are what define the beautiful 2016 Barbera d'Alba Vigna Martina. The wine sees 20 days of maceration with submerged cap, and the bouquet is flowing, polished and impactful as a result. Blackberry, summer cherry and plum rise from the glass. Some 18 months of oak aging adds delicate touches of spice, leather and cedar. 93 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Dolcetto d’Alba, Dei Grassi 2018

£55 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2018 Dolcetto d'Alba dei Grassi is very pretty. Floral and lifted, with mid-weight structure. Lavender, mint and blueberry fruit are nicely layered in this super-expressive and delicious Dolcetto. This isn't a huge wine, but rather is endowed with superb elegance. Hints of tar, smoke and game wrap around the brilliant finish.

The 2018 Langhe Nebbiolo Gavarini offers a very happy drinking experience with pure varietal typicity that underlines wild berry, cola, mint and licorice. Those delicate aromas are followed by freshness and a subtle snap of tannic tightness. The wine offers a perfect pairing approach to a dish with savory flavors and some unctuous olive oil, such as fettuccine with wild porcini mushrooms. 91 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Langhe Chardonnay, Educato 2018

£75 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

In 1985, Elio Grasso planted these Chardonnay vines, and the first vintage came out in 1990.. You can taste the calcareous minerality that this Chardonnay mirrors from the white clay and limestone soils the vines are planted in. Educato is made in stainless steel and does not undergo malolactic fermentation. As a result, you are treated to a zesty, nervous and vibrant expression with salty mineral tones and tangy citrus. Fruit was harvested in the wee hours of the morning before sunrise. I just love this refreshing style of Chardonnay!

17: Fratelli Alessandria

“Fratelli Alessandria is one of Piedmont’s under-the-radar jewels.

The Alessandria’s make compelling, classically built wines from estate vineyards in Verduno and Monforte d’Alba. Best of all, the

wines remain very reasonably priced by today’s standards. Readers who enjoy structured, age-worthy Barolos

won’t want to be without these wines.” Antonio Galloni

A new addition to our offering this year, Fratelli Alessandria is an estate who you will be hearing much more of as they are destined for stardom – at the moment their pricing is very reasonable, though this will certainly change going forward! The village of Verduno, at the northern tip of the Barolo appellation, delivers some of the region’s prettiest, most perfumed expressions of the Nebbiolo grape. Alessandria is one of the town’s standard-bearers. Cousins of the famous G.B.Burlotto, their wines are just as succulent and hard to find. An historic Verduno estate that dates back as far as the 8th century. A true family affair Vittore Alessandria, his mother Flavia, father Gian Battista & uncle Ale have been working hard in recent years to give more precision to their charming wines: more leaves, fewer treatments in the vineyards, along with the investment into a battery of Swiss coopered Slavonian oak botti have all helped to give increased focus to the wines. Made in a traditional and non-interventionist way, the wines are fermented gently and slowly before elevage in large oak cask for three years. These are some of the aromatic, elegant and charming Barolos you’ll find. Vineyards are farmed according to organic practices, but the estate is not certified.

Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno 2015 £270 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Showing an immediately ripe and saturated quality of fruit, the 2015 Barolo San Lorenzo di Verduno is a child of the warm 2015 vintage. The bouquet leaves you no doubt. This wine offers a rich and exuberant approach with dark fruit nuances that cede slowly to spice, tar and black licorice. This Barolo shows depth and dark fruit, both in abundance. The quality of the tannins is still a bit rigid and less integrated at this young stage in the wine's life. You'll need to wait longer to truly enjoy these results. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate Made from the eponymous cru in Monforte, where forty-five-year-old vines are situated 400 meters (1,312 feet) above sea level, and the soil is a mix of limestone with veins of sand. This is a very earthy but savory Barolo with an ageworthy structure.

Barolo Monvigliero 2015 £350 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Monvigliero in the Verduno township is quickly becoming one of the most celebrated and talked about crus in Barolo. The Fratelli Alessandria estate was among the first to understand its potential, and indeed, this wine was first released in 1978. Fast forward to today and you will find that the 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is an absolutely classic interpretation that stays faithful to past incarnations. The wine offers pretty berry aromas intermingled with spice, licorice and crushed stone. A floral aroma of red rose also appears. The tannins are solid and will require extra years of bottle aging. 96+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

18: Palladino

Palladino makes classic Barolo from a few crus in Serralunga,

but in such small quantities that you don’t find it widely offered.

We have been their agent for a few years now and they are starting

to come to the attention of the top critics. These are widely

appreciated and great value!

Azienda Vinicola Palladino sits nestled in the town of Serralunga d’Alba, in the heart of Barolo. The Palladino winery sits in the centre of the village, with a castle perched high above that dates back to the 14th century. Palladino is one of the oldest wineries in Serralunga d’Alba, dating back to 1870. The winery was purchased by the Palladino cousins, Maurilio (winemaker) and Mauro in 1978. Since then they have completely restored and remodelled the winery and added the most advanced cellar equipment while maintaining their ‘classic approach’ to winemaking.

Barolo del Commune di Serralunga d’Alba 2015 £170 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Exuberant, dark and generous, the 2015 Barolo del Comune di Serralunga d'Alba reflects the characteristics of this warm vintage, further reinforced by the territory-specific power you get from this township. This wine is all about muscle and power, but the tannins are softly integrated and there are no hard edges here. Indeed, the wine is relatively accessible and straight-shooting from start to finish. This wine sees fruit sourced from five vineyard sites within Serralunga d'Alba: Parafada, Gabutti, San Bernardo, Serra and Ornato. 92 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Parafada 2015 £210 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case, OWC) £85 per magnum In Bond (1 per case, OWC) £170 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case, OWC)

The 2015 Barolo Parafada is a beautifully supple and velvety expression (from Serralunga d'Alba where Nebbiolo tends to show more concentration and power) that wraps smoothly but thickly over the palate. The wine imparts dark fruit aromas with plum, pressed blackberry, tar, smoke and tobacco. Despite the immediate power of the wine, it ultimately performs with elegance and softness. These Barolos from 2015 tend to be more accessible overall and are suited to medium or long-term drinking. This wine sees a prolonged fermentation period (of up to one month) and undergoes malolactic fermentation in cement before aging in large oak casks for two years (and one year in bottle before its commercial release). Some 2,948 bottles were made. 93 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate Gorgeous aromas of dark berries and sliced tangerines with hints of flowers. Medium to full body, firm and silky tannins and a clean and bright finish. One of the more approachable 2015s. Drink in 2021 and beyond. 92 Points, James Suckling

Barolo Ornato 2015 £210 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case, OWC) £85 per magnum In Bond (1 per case, OWC) £170 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case, OWC)

The 2015 Barolo Ornato takes the intensity level (within the Palladino portfolio) up a full notch. The wine is very expressive and open from the start with dark fruit, ripe blackberry, spice, tar and leather. This wine plays its strongest cards in terms of texture, richness and intensity. Nicely done. Only 2,000 bottles were released. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate Aromas of tar and fruit tea with dark berries and strawberries follow through to a full body, chewy tannins and a long and linear, focused finish. Shows tightness and intensity. Drink in 2023. 94 Points, James Suckling

Barolo San Bernado Riserva 2013 £275 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case, OWC) £100 per magnum In Bond (1 per case, OWC) £200 per double magnum In Bond (1 per case, OWC)

Completing this tour de force collection of wines from Serralunga d'Alba is Palladino's 2013 Barolo Riserva San Bernardo, only produced in the best vintages. This is by far the most intense and complex of the wines presented this year. It shows a tight inner core of fruit that needs more time to unravel and reveal itself. On first nose, you get slightly aged aromas of cherry cola, tar, licorice and smoke. There is dark fruit, with tight black fruit and plum, and a cured element of bacon fat or smoked meat. This is a savory and compelling expression of Barolo. Some 4,133 bottles were made. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate This has dried violets, herbs and leafy nuances with some perfumed and lifted notes, as well as a hint of truffle. This leads to a palate that has bright, chirpy and assertive acidity that carries a long, fine, juicy and fresh finish. 93 Points, James Suckling

19: Pio Cesare In the 1950’s Pio Cesare was one of the first producers to export Barolo to the UK and thereby developing the wine’s reputation overseas. Today, the founder’s great grandson, Pio Boffa, continues the family tradition producing Piemontese wines in a style that manages to balance the best of the old with the best of the new. MINIMAL INTERVENTION WINEMAKING Pio Boffa has been responsible for evolving the family style, carefully modernising the wines without losing the classic family traits or the Piemonte character. Shorter maceration, separate lot fermentation, judicious selection from barrel and large cask ageing all respect the individuality of the region’s wines. These are wines that are determined by the vineyard rather than fashion. Pio Boffa and his nephew Cesare Benvenuto purchased vineyards in the Mosconi cru of Monforte d'Alba a few years back. With the 2015 vintage, we get a first taste of their Barolo Mosconi, the newest addition to this estate's portfolio of wines.

Barolo 2015 £225 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case)

Serralunga d’Alba. 40 days on the skins. ‘This is our most important Barolo. We believe that a blend of different vineyards can make a Barolo that expresses the whole of Barolo rather than a cru.’ The estate only started bottling crus in 1985 with Ornato, which they had bought in 1979. 15% in barrique for six months of which 30% new, 30% second and 30% third passage, the rest is aged in large oak cask. This ageing regime is identical for all their Barolos. The grapes came from Ornato, Briccolina (where they own 3 ha (7 acres)) and Serra (less than 1 ha, around 2.5 acres) as well as contracted fruit of growers with whom they have been working for over 60 (!) years. Bottled at the end of July 2018. Medium-deep ruby with orange tinges. Lifted peppery, cherry nose with quite bit of brooding concentration and minerally notes. Hint of liquorice. Quite sweet and round attack and perfectly integrated acidity on the palate, but the tannins build up notably on the finish. Elegant and with a powerful finish. Has ageing potential. 17 Points, JancisRobinson.com The 2015 Barolo is a beautifully balanced and tight expression of Nebbiolo that hits all the right spots on the palate, from the side of the mouth where you taste the acidity to the back where you get a sense of the wine's structure and integrated tannins. That freshness could pair well with a steak in pepper cream sauce. Long skin maceration times are followed by oak aging, partially in botti with a smaller part in barrique. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate Complex aromas of smoke, ash and dark fruits with a precision and intensity. Layered and gorgeous. Loads of dark fruit and perfume. Full-bodied with round and wonderfully polished tannins. Wonderful length and richness. Goes on for minutes. Try in 2023 but already good now. 96 Points, James Suckling (January 2019)

Barolo Ornato 2015 £375 c/s In Bond (6 bts per case)

£750 c/s In Bond (6 magnums per case)

Serralunga d’Alba. 40 days on the skins. Maturing ruby with watery bricky rim. Fine, sweetly perfumed nose with earthy, minerally notes. Spicy cherry fruit on the palate with polished tannins and ripe acidity. Tannins build up on the finish but are backed-up by elegant fruit. Fantastic chew and length of fruit. 17+ Points, Jancis Robinson.com With powerful fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, the 2015 Barolo Ornato is a plush and dense red wine with a contemporary feel that prizes richness and overall accessibility. There is a level of softness here that permeates the entire wine and adds to the already-intense aromas of red fruit, blackberry, spice, tar, asphalt and candied orange peel. This structured Barolo is best tasted with a platter of Alpine cheeses and jellied honey. 93+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate The aromas are so complex yet subtle with wet earth, mushrooms and dark fruits. Dried flowers as well. Full body, chewy tannins that are ultra-fine and powerful, yet there is a finesse and beauty to them as I said from barrel. Classic, great nebbiolo. Try in 2023. 98 Points, James Suckling (January 2019)

Barolo Mosconi 2015 £270 c/s In Bond (3 bts per case)

Monforte d’Alba. First vintage of this single vineyard; 4500 bottles produced. Maturing mid ruby with bricky tinges. Embracing and rich on the nose with a spicy edge. The tannins keep clinging to the palate while the fruit is still backward. Supple finish with lots of ripe, grainy tannins. 17 Points, JancisRobinson.com Here is a first taste of a new wine from Pio Cesare following the estate's acquisition of vines in the Mosconi cru of Monforte d'Alba a few years back. The 2015 Barolo Mosconi opens to a less complicated bouquet with steady and clean aromas of wild berry, balsam or grilled herb and crushed stone. My sample did take a little extra time to open, but once it did, the wine presented all the detailed and nuanced characteristics of the grape with pinpoint precision. It's great to welcome a new wine to the greater Barolo family. Only 5,000 bottles were made. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate Incredibly perfumed with unique aromas of white truffles, peaches, dark berries and dried flowers. Fresh and bright. Full body, very silky tannins and a long and gorgeous finish. So progressive and seamless. Magnificent. First vintage of this single vineyard wine. Only 5,000. Starting drinking in 2023. 98 Points, James Suckling (January 2019)

20: Giuseppe Rinaldi

Giuseppe Rinaldi sadly passed away after dedicating his whole life to making incredible wines in Barolo. His daughters Marta and Carlotta have been in charge for the last few vintages and we adore the precision of their wines. Unfortunately, so does the rest of the world so these wines have a huge following. Buy as many as you can as market prices are still rising. We have been saying this for a few years and we don’t see it ending just yet.

Barolo Brunate 2015 £250 per bottle In Bond £3,000 c/s In Bond (12 bottles per case)

Rinaldi's Barolo Brunate is refined and light on its feet in 2015, with a bit less structure and overall depth than is the norm. That is not at all surprising, as the 2015 Brunate has always been a relatively light wine by Rinaldi standards. Dark red cherry, plum, licorice, sage and balsamic notes shape this expressive yet understated Barolo from Rinaldi. 93 Points, Antonio Galloni The 2015 Barolo Brunate benefits from a thicker soil profile in this vineyard that consequently bumps the wine's aromatic intensity and staying power up a notch or two. This wine is almost crunchy in texture, with a subtle snap or crackle as it hits the palate. It shows enormous beauty and richness with a dark fruit profile followed by elements of spice, tar, tobacco and moist potting soil. There are floral notes as well with rose and lavender. This wine will reward those with the patience to wait. 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Tre Tine 2015 £225 per bottle In Bond £2,800 c/s In Bond (12 bottles per case)

The 2015 Barolo Tre Tine is a pretty, gracious wine. In 2015, the Tre Tine is bright and lifted, especially in its aromatics. Crushed sweet red berries, mint, dried cherry and rose petal add to the wine's understated feel. Volatile acidity is just at the level where it is perceptible. Time in bottle is often a friend in helping VA meld into the fabric of a wine. It will be interesting to see if that happens here. For now, the 2015 Tre Tine is attractive, but also a bit quirky. 92+ Points, Antonio Galloni This wine celebrated its 100-year anniversary in 2016. Representing its 99th birthday, the 2015 Barolo Tre Tine is a blend of fruit from Ravera (60%), Le Coste (20%) and Cannubi San Lorenzo (20%). These sites encountered some challenges with hail in the 2014 vintage that resulted in a 30% loss of fruit. The Rinaldi family saw hail in the Brunate and Cerequio area in 2016. But the 2015 vintage saw smooth sailing and what winemaker Marta Rinaldi calls "a return to normalcy." She says fermentations proceeded beautifully and without any holdups. This Barolo opens to a medium-dark garnet color with bright fruit tones followed by licorice, tar and delicate balsam herb. The wine offers a degree of softness that comes through in the quality of the tannins and the texture of the mouthfeel. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

21: Luciano Sandrone The Sandrone family's 2015 Barolos are flat-out gorgeous, but that is hardly a surprise given the brilliant track record the Sandrone have built over the last four decades. As always, the Sandrones favor relatively short oak aging of just 18 months for their Le Vigne and Aleste Barolos. Luciano Sandrone remains a benchmark for Piedmont. These wines are simply terrific.

Barolo Aleste 2015 £480 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Sandrone's 2015 Barolo Aleste is a total stunner. Succulent dark cherry, plum, mocha, lavender and spice are all beautifully framed by ripe, silky tannins. Creamy, resonant and super-expressive, the 2015 Aleste hits all the right notes. Next to Le Vigne, Aleste is more typical of what readers might expect from a warm year. It is a gorgeous Barolo from the Sandrone family. 96 Points, Antonio Galloni

Barolo Le Vigne 2015 £415 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £150 per magnum In Bond (1 magnum per case)

The 2015 Barolo Le Vigne is a wine of pure and extreme grace. Silky and nuanced on the palate, with tremendous character, the 2015 is all class. Rose petal, mint and sweet red berry fruit are laced together in this super-expressive Barolo. Medium in body, with radiant fruit and brisk tannins, the 2015 Le Vigne is a terrific example of the vintage at its best. Today, the 2015 is decidedly reticent. I have seen Le Vigne open up with time in bottle. I imagine that will be the case here as well, although the wine is quite closed down at this stage. Vineyard sources are Baudana, Villero, Vignane and Merli. 95+ Points, Antonio Galloni

ALESTE is the natural continuity of Luciano’s first wine, the Barolo Cannubi Boschis. Giving all the experience, know-how, patience and heart of his numerous grape harvests, Luciano pays tribute, with boldness and sensibility, to the next family generation. ALESTE is in fact the combination of the names of his grandchildren ALEssia and STEfano.

Barolo Vite Talin 2013

£500 per bottle In Bond (1 bottle presentation case) Here it is: the newest creation to emerge from the talented hands of Luciano Sandrone and his family. To be released in 2019, the 2013 Barolo Vite Talin is a wine born from a single vine. They noticed one plant that behaved differently than the others. It produced dark and concentrated fruit. Unlike common Nebbiolo, its leaves showed shallow sinuses between the lobes. Its vigor was different, producing fewer very loose clusters with small berry and seed size. The Sandrone family first noticed this vine in 1987 and named it Talin (a dialect version of the Italian name Natale) after the farmer who originally had the vine. For years, they vinified fruit from this vine separately in order to study its progress. They had a hunch that this mysterious vine was indeed genetically Nebbiolo, and they eventually received confirmation of this from the University of Turin. With this, they earn the right to call this wine Barolo. The massal selection is from Le Coste, and Barolo now results in less than one hectare of vines (6,000 square meters) and less than 2,000 bottles produced per year. This first vintage celebrates the 40th anniversary of the estate (1978-2018). The wine opens to an intense, dark color with extra pulp, power and structure in the mouth. The tannins are soft and rich. The wine is fermented in oak with maceration times that range from 20 to 25 days. It is then aged in tonneaux for two years before going into oval-shaped bottles for another two years before its commercial release. In total, it completes six years of aging at the winery. This is a game changer for the Sandrone family and for Barolo. What I find fascinating is that Barolo Talin takes us away from the discussion of vineyards and crus. It reminds us that the Nebbiolo grape is ultimately what is behind every great Barolo that we love. This wine takes us to the heart of Nebbiolo. 100 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate Sandrone's 2013 Barolo Vite Talin is just as fabulous from bottle as it was from cask. Rich, unctuous and deeply layered in the glass, the 2013 possesses tremendous density and voluptuousness. Today, it is a bit closed down following its bottling about six months before this tasting. One of the things I admire most about the 2013 is the juxtaposition of translucence and power, which, at its essence, is what great Barolo is all about. The Vite Talin (previously reviewed here as a Riserva) is new to the range. The Vite Talin emerges from a parcel within the Rivassi cru known as Talin with heavily virused vines that produce a minuscule crop. For many years I have tasted the Talin Barolo from cask as one of the potential candidates for Le Vigne. During all of that time, Sandrone ultimately decided to sell the entirety of the production off in bulk. Until 2013, when the Sandrones decided to bottle the wine on its own, with an old-school label that celebrates the Sandrone family's history prior to the founding of the Luciano Sandrone winery. 98+ Points, Antonio Galloni Nebbiolo d’Alba Valmaggiore 2017

£150 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

With scorching heat and little rain overall, there was reason for worry during the 2017 growing season at large, but in the Roero zone by the banks of the Tanaro river, the hilly Valmaggiore vineyards received more rain than other parts of Piedmont, so these grapes did not suffer as much. Lovely notes of red rose and some herbal tones appear on the nose of the 2017 Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore, coupled with balsam, spice and rosemary. It's voluminous in the mouth, and while the Le Vigne Barolo tends to be the most floral and delicately ethereal of Sandrone's release, this bouquet is distinctive in its own way. It would be a nice pair with a mushroom risotto. 92 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barbera d’Alba 2017 £120 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Tasted from the vat, the 2018 Dolcetto d'Alba has a fresh and classic profile, a lightweight expression reflective of the cooler growing season that followed a torrid 2017. There was even a bit of snow on the ground to contend with during the early buds of spring 2018 and plenty of cool rain that initially caused some worries. But the harvest came on time, more or less, in mid to late September, and the result was definitely a snappier and leaner Dolcetto d'Alba than we are used to. 88 Points, Monica Larner, RobertParker.com

22: Paolo Scavino

The Scavino estate is one of Piedmont’s finest with holdings in Barolo’s greatest Crus: Cannubi, Bric del Fiasc and Monvigliero. Enrico Scavino is one of the pioneers responsible for the great reputation Piedmont has today. Since the 1980s he has been crafting benchmark modern Barolo. Through high fermentation temperatures, short maceration and finishing in a mixture of French oak barriques and the larger traditional ‘Botti’ casks, Enrico makes svelte wines whose polish and sophistication enhance rather than shroud their character and typicity. Recently they have been reducing the oak and using more traditional vinification techniques, and their wines have only gotten better. Critics have started to notice and Scavino 2015s are some of the finest from the region. The unfortunate news from the Paolo Scavino family is they lost access to their vineyard site in Cannubi. For that reason, both the Barolo Cannubi and the Barolo Carobric will soon be discontinued as of the 2018 vintage – making them collector’s items going forward! Some good news though, as we prepare to lose the Cannubi & Carobric, there are two new additions to the range starting with the 2015 vintage, a Ravera & Prapò – which are firing on all cylinders – a fantastic debut!

Barolo Monvigliero 2015 £260 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £100 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

From the Grand Cru of the village of Verduno, known for its soils of limestone mixed with veins of chalk. This and the southeast exposure and altitude of 310 meters create wines of extreme elegance. The sour cherries really lift this off on the nose, catching suggestions of candied citrus, tile, roasted herbs and cedar. Racy and sexy, drawn out into shape by the forthright acidity and steely tannins. Drink in 2023. 96 Points, James Suckling Pale garnet. Vanilla-cream and toasted hazelnut oak, fresh red cherry, spice and some tar tones. High, fine-grained tannins, with smoky, red cherry, flint and spice. Long. Just a touch of alcohol, but this is a fine example of power Barolo. 17.5 Points, JancisRobinson.com The Scavino family has had access to fruit from the Monvigliero cru for almost 20 years. They have farmed a small parcel (under one hectare) since 2000, and the grapes were previously added to their “classico” Barolo blend. In 2006, Monvigliero became its own single-vineyard expression because Enrico Scavino always had a big passion for this site. The 2015 Barolo Monvigliero is a bright and beautiful wine with a strong floral signature of violets and roses that accompanies this wine from start to finish. The wine is very characteristic of Monvigliero in terms of the softness and silky nature of the tannins as well. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Bric del Fiasc 2015 £340 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £125 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

This is the darling of the house of Scavino, and the wine that made them famous when they first vinified it separately in 1978. The vineyard with an average altitude of 260 meters above sea level has the most complex soil of the firms’s crus, with a mix of whitish-grey limestone and yellow sandstone. The oldest vines hail from 1938 and produce very few grapes. The redcurrant-compote character really pops out here, before dried cranberries, licorice and spice box all come to the fore. Tannic and very expansive, sweeping through a whole array of red berries via linear acidity and wrapping itself up in a long finish. Drink in 2023. 96 Points, James Suckling Pale garnet. Integral vanilla-nut oak, then slate and fresh earth, savoury spice and wild-strawberry fruit. Richness of wild strawberry is beautifully balanced by brisk acidity. Firm, fine, resolving tannins are already becoming mouth-coating. In the ‘modern’ idiom, this is a classy wine. Lovely length and refinement. 18.0 Points, JancisRobinson.com From the Scavino family’s home-turf vineyard, the 2015 Barolo Bric dël Fiasc (with fruit from Castiglione Falletto) delivers structure, firmness and power. This is a classic interpretation of a historic cru, and the wine offers linear, crisp lines. Fruit from this site was fermented separately for the first time to make this wine in 1978. The family had long recognized the consistently superior quality of the fruit from this location, and they saw its special potential. Enrico Scavino told me about the rush of adrenaline and pride that washed over him when he first tasted this wine with his peers Gaja and Conterno during those Golden Years of the past and saw the enthusiasm their eyes. This is the go-to Barolo if you want to taste classic Scavino. 95+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Carobric 2015 £260 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £100 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Eighty percent of this Barolo comes from the celebrated Rocche di Castiglione cru in Castiglione Falletto, where vines are situated 350 meters above sea level and have southeast exposures. The soil is predominately Arenaire di Diano d’Alba, or alternating layers of sandstone and sandy, clay marls. The rest of the grapes come from Cannubi and Bric del Fiasc. Dried berries, rose petals, rose stems, tar, cedar and tobacco. Structured and very serious indeed on the palate, where chewy tannins caress, but also strengthen the vibrant but dried red fruit that permeates this red. Drink in 2023. 97 Points, James Suckling The 2018 vintage will be the last edition made of this wine. The Scavino family lost its lease in Cannubi, and the estate wine portfolio is being redrawn as a result. The 2015 Barolo Carobric remains a blend of fruit from Rocche di Castiglione (60%), Cannubi (20%) and Bric dël Fiasc (20%). That blend has been carefully contemplated, and the absence of the Cannubi changes the formula too drastically. Cannubi adds richness and flavor to the blend, while Rocche di Castiglione with its sandy soils adds delicate mineral and light fruit nuances. Bric dël Fiasc offers both power and elegance and is the proverbial glue that keeps harmony between the two sides. This wine was first produced in 1996, and the end of an important chapter in the Scavino family legacy is upon us. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Cannubi 2015 £340 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

From the historic Cannubi vineyard in Barolo than the Scavinos have leased since 1985 and maintain it as if it was their own. Vineyard altitude is 290 meters above sea level, and the soil is Sant’Agata Fossili marls mixed with some calcareous marls as well. The advanced age of the vines planted in 1946, generates intense flavours and complexity. It’s the fruit tea and hibiscus that really lifts this, not to mention the roasted herbs that lurk beneath the surface. But there’s no shortage of dried fruit either, whether it be dried cherries, dried plums or Christmas cake. It’s a real mouth-coater, showing sheer elegance in a bottle, encapsulated in the tannins that weave an ornate tapestry, hung between every corner of the palate. Full-bodied and very, very long. Best ever? Drink in 2025. 98 Points, James Suckling Pale-medium ruby-garnet. Cinnamon-clove oak, some fresh earth and ripe, drying red cherry. Chewy, firm, fairly ripe tannins, with chocolate oak and spice tones. Long finish that brings its components together in harmony. 17.5 Points, JancisRobinson.com

This wine draws its fruit from a half hectare of vines that have often suffered in the hot years, and it will be discontinued as of the 2018 vintage. The Scavino family was not able to renew their lease here. There is a lovely elegance to this 2015 Barolo Cannubi, due largely to the high elevation of this parcel, where there is more dryness in the topsoil and more erosion, resulting in less plant vigor. It is made from smaller grape clusters. There is more concentration to this Barolo as well, and the tannins are never too powerful. But the low yields in the past and the general challenge to growing here make for more difficulty than it is worth, so I suppose this 2015 vintage could be considered something of a collector's item as a result. 95+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Ravera 2015 £260 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £100 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

Located in Monteforte d’Alba, this very steep slope faces south and southeast and has combination soils of calcareous marls and clay layered with veins of sand, the vines here generate concentrated flavours and remarkable depth. The nose is really spot-on here, delivering a wholesome array of fresh hibiscus, redcurrants, fruit tea and rose petals. The palate is very silky and polished, weaving its way neatly through finely arranged layers of bright red fruit. Medium-to full-bodied and wonderfully elegant. Drink in 2022. 96 Points, James Suckling Pale-medium ruby-garnet. Savoury, smoky cherry, underpinned by salty minerality and nutty oak. Expressive of its place more than its winemaking. High, chalky, primary tannins, with depth of smoky, flinty minerality and savoury, dried cherry. Long. 18.0 Points, JancisRobinson.com Here is another rookie in the lineup for Paolo Scavino. The Ravera vineyard was purchased in 2015, at 2.7 hectares and about 360 meters in altitude. It is their highest vineyard and the last to be harvested every year. This east-facing parcel is never too hot, always showing cooler-climate conditions than the others, with fine tannins and a good dose of acidity. The 2015 Barolo Ravera is a very tight and and precise wine, with notes of exotic tea that follow blackberry, dried cherry and licorice. This is a great new addition to the Scavino portfolio at this time of important changes for the winery. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Prapò 2015 £260 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £100 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

This is a classic Barolo with firm but fine tannins and expressive bouquets. Prapò’s southeast exposure helps keep the vines fresh as does the average altitude of 340 meters, where day and night temperature changes create complexity and depth. Glazed cherries, orange peel, citrus, dried cranberries and tulips. A grainy and very refined palate follows, which rolls irresistibly through taut cherries and bright acidity. Chewy and long on the finish. Drink in 2023. 94 Points, James Suckling Pale-medium ruby. Coffee oak with cinnamon, spice and ripe, slightly jammy red cherry. Sweet, red-cherry fruit palate entry, then savoury, smoky overtones kick in, with gravelly minerality and tar tones. Firm to high, fine tannins. Decent length. Plenty of power that is well harnessed. 17.5 Points, JancisRobinson.com This is also a new wine, coming from less than a hectare in the Prapò vineyards, from which only five producers draw their fruit. It's a beautiful plot at about 1,000 feet in altitude and with a full southern exposure, producing some very meaty fruit with a high phenolic presence, as the color is darker and there is more perfume. The 2015 Barolo Prapò is a distinctive vintage of a wine that is one to watch, for sure. The vineyard makes the difference, with brown and orange sandy soils, along with marlstone and veins of soils more typical of the area. The Scavino family bought this plot in 2008 and let the land rest for two years before they replanted. The goal, they said, was to steer away from more productive clones in favor of those that wouldn't take away too much from the quality. They took wood from the mothership vineyards in Bricco Ambrogio for this experiment, grafting them onto the rootstocks they carefully selected. The result is a soft and delicate Barolo with a lot of personality to go along with its firmness and power. This is an easy cru to recognize. Enrico Scavino said they could have waited longer for this experimental harvest, but they felt the time was right, explaining that "this work is all about feelings and instincts." 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Riserva Rocche dell’Annuziata 2013 £695 per c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case) £250 per magnum In Bond (1 per case)

From the famed cru in La Morra, where vines reach 385 meters above sea level and benefit for south and southeast exposures. Vines were planted in 1950 and in 1991and the subsoils contain sandstone and sand interspersed with calcareous marls. Aromas of white truffles and dried red cherries here with an earthy nuance that makes for a complex and compelling nose. The palate has a deep and dense shape and delivers a wide array of rich cherry and plum flavors. Some handy spice here, too. Drink or hold. 95 Points, James Suckling Pale-medium, slightly opaque garnet. Nutty, spicy oak, over ripe red cherry and dried thyme, with early stages of old leather and dried tobacco development. Compact, high, chalky tannins that are not close to ready, but enough density of flavour that should allow these to melt and come into balance. Long. 17.5++ Points, JancisRobinson.com The 2013 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata Riserva was released in January of 2019, and once again it looks to be a top prize. Licorice and flowers dominate the bouquet, and its beautiful red fruit is generous throughout. This wine has always been a beauty and consistently has had a high price tag to reflect that quality, going back to the first vintages of the 1990s. It has regularly sold for about $200 every year for the last decade. These vines are old, some of them very old (reaching the ripe age of 60 years old in 1990s, when many of them were replanted with carefully selected clones), producing an elegance and concentration that brings intensity and a high standard of aromas. This Barolo without a doubt shows its pedigree and a quality of noble perfumes that demonstrate characteristics of the greatest Nebbiolo vintages, all delivered with excellent concentration. The magic lingers on the palate, right up to the finish. 97 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

23: G.D Vajra & Luigi Baudana

"By now I have run out of superlatives for Vajra. Suffice it to say these are some of the finest, artisan wines

being made in Piedmont today. My only regret is not having bought these wines more heavily in the past."

Antonio Galloni, Vinous 2015 is a vintage of rich and vibrant Barolos. Winter was snowy, and mild temperatures since the month of February lead to an early bud break. By flowering, which took place in the middle of May, the season was about 10 days ahead of norm. More rain fell between end of May and early June, and this was a great help for the vines to overcome a very hot month of July. 2015 was a generous vintage with very healthy fruit, and the loss of production is mainly due to sporadic hailstorms, and from the summer heat. Harvest was slightly anticipated and fruit quality was great across the board. Please note the new addition to the family, the 2015 Barolo Coste di Rose, now owned by Vajra, having previously been rented since 2015 and as yet still to be rated by the critics, hence the great price and first ever vintage!

Barolo Bricco delle Viole 2015 £350 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The flagship Barolo Bricco delle Viole is quite understated and gracious in 2015. Medium in body, with the persistent tannins that are so typical of this site, the 2015 is lithe, focused and full of energy. The warm vintage notwithstanding, in 2015, Vajra's Bricco delle Viole is distinctly sinewy and tense. It will offer considerable appeal to readers who find some of the other 2015 Barolos too open and giving in their youthful stage. Kirsch, rose petal, mint and chalky notes build into a finely cut finish. Time in the glass softens some of the youthful, austere contours, but this remains a 2015 Barolo that needs time in bottle to be at its very best. 93+ Points, Antonio Galloni The 2015 Barolo Bricco Delle Viole is a delicate and pure expression of Nebbiolo. The wine shows its naked beauty with pride, provocatively semi-dressed in lacy, floral aromas of wild rose and pressed violets. At this young age, the wine exhibits a gentle mix of fruity and floral characteristics that merge into the bouquet with intrepidness. The fruit from this vineyard within the Barolo township has maintained its freshness and crispness despite the heat of the 2015 growing season. I think it would be a lovely match for a veal piccata and cream sauce, with parsley and capers. 94+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Ravera 2015

£335 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2015 Barolo Ravera captures all the best the vintage has to offer. More importantly, it has that extra level of textural richness and sweetness that the Bricco delle Viole does not have, at least not today. Creamy and beautifully textured in the glass, the 2015 is a total winner. Bright red raspberry and pomegranate fruit notes are lifted, while expressive floral and blood orange overtones add brightness. The 2015 suggests that the Ravera might, in time, become the flagship wine here. Don't miss it! 95 Points, Antonio Galloni

“The Vajra family continues to do remarkable work in revitalizing the Baudana estate. The two vineyard designates are both

distinctive, as they should be. Stylistically, the wines are bigger and more overt than the Barolos the Vajras make at their G.D. Vajra

estate. Then again, here we are in Serralunga.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous

Barolo Baudana, Luigi Baudana 2015 £350 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The 2015 Barolo Baudana is powerful, ample and deep, with tons of brightness to play off the sweet red cherry and pomegranate fruit. Already quite expressive, the 2015 appears to have a very bright future. Even today, its balance is simply impeccable. Within the context of the year, the 2015 Baudana is one of the most polished refined wines readers will taste. 94+ Points, Antonio Galloni The Luigi Baudana 2015 Barolo Baudana, with fruit from Serralunga d'Alba, is a wine with a very promising aging future ahead. Starting with the firmness of its core and its tightly knit fabric, this wine offers all the main criteria for graceful cellaring. You get bright primary fruit, along with crisp acidity and rock-solid structure. You won't miss those characteristic Serralunga d'Alba tannins. Give the wine time to soften, relax and flesh out further. Still nervous in its youth, this pretty wine will award those who wait. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Ceretta, Luigi Baudana 2015 £375 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

If the Baudana is a wine of sensuality, the 2015 Barolo Cerretta is a Barolo of virile, explosive power, which, among other things, shows just how different the wines of Serralunga can be. Black cherry, plum, sage, menthol and licorice hit the palate in a firm, massively tannic Barolo that is going to require considerable patience. The Cerretta is the embodiment of Serralunga richness and structure. What a wine! 95 Points, Antonio Galloni The 2015 Barolo Cerretta offers a slightly richer and textured expression from Serralunga d'Alba fruit. The wine is slightly riper compared to the Barolo Baudana from the same vintage, with dark fruit aromas of wild cherry, rose, cola and tilled earth. The wine is similarly tight and firm at its core; however, this Nebbiolo from the Cerretta vineyard offers more succulent padding and volume. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

24: Vietti

“This is an absolutely phenomenal set of wines from Vietti.” Antonio Galloni, Vinous.com

“..The 2015’s here are brilliant. I won't be surprised if they show even better with a few more years in bottle, as they are among

the most reticent 2015’s I tasted.” Antonio Galloni

“It’s a great year, clearly the best since 2010, perhaps better.”

James Suckling.com

Barolo Castiglione 2015 £175 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Plenty of perfume here with abundant roses and violets, as well as spice-dusted red cherries and hints of orange rind. The palate has depth and density with a sense of power and detail to the tannins. Long, dense and fresh. 94 Points, James Suckling Vietti's 2015 Barolo Castiglione is soft, silky and pliant, all qualities that make it a good choice for drinking now and over the next decade or so. Floral and nicely lifted, the 2015 is very pretty, if not quite the overachiever it can be. I expect the 2015 will be even more expressive once the tannins soften a bit further. In this tasting, the Castiglione stands out for its freshness and energy. Time in the glass brings out an extra layer of textural breadth and resonance that is not immediately apparent. 91 Points, Antonio Galloni The 2015 Barolo Castiglione is a soft and elegant expression with marked freshness and delineated fruit. Indeed, Luca Currado maintains that 2015 was not a hot vintage per se, and any jammy notes that might appear in the vintage may have to do with an overzealous approach to leaf pulling during the summer season. Old habits die hard, he says, and leaving the leaves intact contributes to the color stabilization of the wine and the successful management of its acidity. From an analytical point of view, this wine does flaunt that much-needed inner crispness. It adds focus and sharpness to the layers of dark, succulent fruit that appear on first nose. 94 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

“2007, 2009 and 2011 were all warmer than 2015,” says Luca Currado of Vietti. “2015 was a warm vintage but the wines have good acidity, they are very classic. Perhaps it is possible to compare it with 2001.” “The Vietti Rocche di Castiglione 2015 is one of the stars of the vintage, showing hauntingly complex, powerful and detailed style.” James Suckling

Barolo Rocche di Castiglione 2015 £380 c/s In Bond (3 bottles per case)

A hauntingly complex and finely detailed nose that touches so many different characters. Roses, dried wood, cedar, fine brown spices, light earthy notes, warm stones, mountain herbs and leaves. All here – very complex. The density and weight is exceptional, as is the fine, firm weave of tannins. The length is staggering and the tautness and balance are captivating. One of the stars of the vintage! Try from 2025. 98 Points, James Suckling The 2015 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is incredibly inviting from the very first taste. Silky and aromatic, the Rocche shows plenty of the classiness that is such a signature of this Castiglione Falletto site. As with all of these 2015s, readers will have to be patient. The 2015 gains striking volume and resonance with time in the glass, but a few years in bottle are an absolute must for the wine to show at its very best. 94 Points, Antonio Galloni Along with the Ravera, the 2015 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione has a very fresh feeling (they are both grown with less direct sunlight). Indeed, there are many similarities between these two prestigious Barolos from Vietti, but the differences start with the vinification methods. While the Ravera sees malolactic fermentation in stainless steel, the Rocche di Castiglione completes that phase in botte. To continue the comparison, these two wines are certainly more closed than the other Barolo crus from this producer, the Lazzarito and the Brunate, which blossom and open more quickly. Even though it is a bit shy, the defining characteristics of herbaceous rosemary and balsamic notes show up well in this vintage of the Rocche di Castiglione, a vineyard site that prizes elegance above all else. 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Lazzarito 2015 £355 c/s In Bond (3 bottles per case)

This is a very youthful Barolo that has attractive, fragrant perfume with freshly picked roasting herbs and a strong, central thread of ripe cherries and red plums. The pure and concentrated palate frames intense plum and cherry flavors in long, unwavering tannins that deliver rich, strong and seamless into the finish. Exceptional quality and built for aging. Try from 2025. 96 Points, James Suckling The 2015 Barolo Lazzarito is one of the highlights in this range from Vietti. The power and gravitas of Serralunga come through loud and clear in a deep, beautifully resonant Barolo loaded with character. Iron, smoke, sage, menthol, licorice and rose petal give the Lazzarito its beguiling aromatic complexity. The massive tannins need time to soften, but there is a lot to look forward to once that happens. 94 Points, Antonio Galloni Opening to a beautifully floral bouquet, the 2015 Barolo Lazzarito delivers fragrant tones of violets, wild rose and a touch of orange blossom. As is the norm at Vietti, I tasted this wine and then wrote this review based on impressions gained from two samples—one opened several hours before my tasting and one opened at the moment of my review. Those floral notes came forth with increased intensity and clarity in the bottle that had been opened longer. The bouquet continues to surprise with touches of black fruit and freshly milled white pepper. However, like many wines from Serralunga d’Alba, this expression from Lazzarito reveals a pretty inner paradox. Those ethereal and balsamic aromas cede to a dense and rich mouthfeel, characterized by structure and power. Those two sides of the wine reach beautiful parity and lasting harmony. 96+ Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Ravera 2015 £380 c/s In Bond (3 bottles per case)

The beautifully fragrant roses are impossible to resist. This oozes charm. Also, there are red cherries, cocoa powder and an array of wild herbs in the mix. The palate has toned yet muscular tannins that build nicely to deliver a concentrated core of ripe red cherry flavor that holds long, fresh and youthful. Great Barolo. Try from 2022. 95 Points, James Suckling The 2015 Barolo Ravera is once again the head of the class at Vietti. Bright, sculpted and wonderfully nuanced, the Ravera is very pretty. Floral aromatics and the pointed, brilliant fruit that is such a Ravera signature are very much in evidence. Hints of blood orange, mint, crushed rocks and flowers add shades of complexity as the 2015 gradually opens up in the glass. This is one of the finer wines of the year. Don't miss! 95 Points, Antonio Galloni Starting off a bit shy and closed at first, the 2015 Barolo Ravera showed noticeably better in the sample that had been opened a few hours prior to my arrival at the winery for my annual visit. This makes perfect sense as Vietti’s wines are intentionally slow at first but are built to endure the long haul. From the Novello township, this vineyard site is recognized for its power, structure and the uniquely broad approach it shows to the palate. There is a larger span of black fruit at its core. The positioning of the Ravera cru means it is open to the elements and the cold air from the Alps, and the wines result in freshness and mineral character as well. Luca Currado describes a salty, anchovy-like aroma that does indeed appear. Otherwise, this wine shows tightly polished and glossy tannins. 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Brunate 2015 £380 c/s In Bond (3 bottles per case)

This has a rather reserved nose with dried-herb, rosehip, potpourri and light cedary aromas, ahead of fragrant dried cherries. The palate has quite dense and smoothly rendered, ripe tannins that deliver a long, composed and approachable Barolo. Drink or hold. 95 Points, James Suckling The 2015 Barolo Brunate is powerful and dense in the glass, with plenty of Brunate tannin that enshrouds the palate. Iron, smoke, grilled herb, menthol and spice notes add complexity to the dark, sepia-toned fruit. The 2015 is a baby. It will benefit from several years in bottle and then drink well to age 25-30, perhaps beyond. This is the first vintage made from Vietti's expanded holdings following the acquisition of a parcel that formerly went to Andrea Oberto. 93+ Points, Antonio Galloni The Barolo Brunate was not made in 2014 because of hail damage. Instead, all the fruit was diverted to the Langhe Nebbiolo Perbacco instead. This newest release, the 2015 Barolo Brunate, definitely makes up for the lost ground. This is an explosive and absolutely exuberant expression of Nebbiolo from a vineyard site in La Morra near M. Marengo’s property. Vietti farms two parcels here, a higher side of the vineyard and a lower one (near Damilano and Ceretto). These lower parts of Brunate perform very nicely in the cooler vintages. Instead, this warm vintage expression puts a lot of its fruit depth and personality upfront in a confident and no-fuss manner. You absolutely know what you are getting here, even at the first sniff of the bouquet. The wine proceeds to open and blossom before your nose, offering dark fruit, rose, spice and a very linear mineral tone at the back. That linear flinty note is just terrific. Some 3,600 were produced. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Villero Riserva 2012 £895 c/s In Bond (3 bottles per case)

Vietti’s 2012 Barolo Riserva Villero is absolutely gorgeous. In 2012, the Villero is especially lifted and aromatic, showing a distinctly floral and red-toned expression of fruit rather than the darker, more balsamic inflections that are typical of this Castiglione Falletto cru. Light on its feet, fresh and graceful to its core, the Villero is another terrific wine from Vietti in 2012. Veins of Villero tannin and bright acids give the wine energy, vibrancy and tons of character. More than anything else, though, the 2012 Villero is a very clear continuation of a stylistic evolution that can be traced to the 2010 Barolo Ravera in which the Barolos are now made in a more traditional style than in the past, which includes malolactic fermentation in cask rather than barrique. In 2012, that approach was not in place for all the Barolos, but it is very much evident here. 95+ Points, Antonio Galloni This is the 13th edition that Vietti has come out with, over the span of 38 years, of this stunning Riserva, a wine that ultimately is produced only about once every four years or so. It was not made after the previous harvest, in 2011. The recent editions have been nothing short of spectacular, earning 100-point scores in both 2007 and 2009 and 99 points in its latest appearance, 2010. It's a series that has set the bar extraordinarily high, and this 2012 Barolo Riserva Villero is a little less exciting in comparison. However, the wine holds its own as one of the most beautiful in the entire appellation and one of the best in the somewhat lackluster vintage. Balsamic and truffle notes pepper the palate of this handsome Barolo, but it's just really hard to reproduce that magic, release after release, for a wine regularly expected to sell at several hundred dollars apiece. Some 3,300 bottles of this vintage were made. 97 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

25: Roberto Voerzio Roberto Voerzio is undeniably one of the finest stars of Piedmont and a Barolo producer with a world-wide following, his philosophy is a simple one; from the healthiest vines, in the greatest plots, come the very finest wines. He is one of those rare producers who has near mythical status as a vine grower. His vineyard management is meticulous, tending to treat each vine individually like parents would do with their children. This attention to details sees him amongst the vines throughout the season, green harvesting, pruning, and leaf thinning which, together with his policy of having high planting density, result in an exceptional small production. The yields are the lowest in the region, 500g of fruit per vine for the crus and even 1kg per vine for Dolcetto and Barberas - the yield of most top growers' best crus. In the winery Roberto's vision is to make the purest expression of Nebbiolo as possible. Fermentations are with wild yeasts, extractions are very gentle using the light "pumping over" technique, elevage takes place in both french oak with a maximum of 30% new, both large casks and barriques. The wines are an exquisite mix of intensity and lightness, measured concentration and bright juicy, moreish flavours. Roberto has this to say about the 2015 vintage: “For climatic conditions it was definitely positive, apart from a slight hailstorm in early August, which caused a further decrease in our already low yields, especially in the part of Rocche dell’Annunziata, Torriglione, Brunate, Cerequio (not in La Serra and Fossati) causing a loss of production of about 10-12,000 bottles of Barolo. Summer and autumn have been dry with excellent temperatures. Due to its organoleptic characteristics it is difficult to find a vintage to compare with 2015, as vinosity and richness can be approached in 2009, while for the complexity and intensity of the aromas it is more similar to 2010. The distinctive features of our Barolo, to be considered excellent, are: in taste, great richness and extreme silkiness and roundness. In the aromas, depending on the Cru, floral notes of violet and dried rose are recalled (Rocche dell’Annunziata); there are more fruity notes in the other Crus, with particular hints of wild berries, small fruits and citrus notes, particularly in Fossati and Cerequio. This is a vintage of absolute excellence right away, with great prospects over time for aging.”

Barolo Cerequio 2015 £1,025 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

A stunning, weightless Cerequio. Beguiling and aromatic, so easy on the eye and pliable in texture but persistent too. A length and intensity that belies its elegance. Silky strawberry, red cherry and kirsch fruit. Sensual and caressing but with a brightness that prolongs the haunting finish. Ravishing Barolo. One of the historic single vineyards of La Morra, south-facing and planted at 300 metres above sea level on sandy clay soils. On average 300 cases per year are produced. The 2015 Barolo Cerequio shows impressive and firm construction; however, the wine remains delicate and finessed all the while. This is a real stunner with inner fiber that is as strong, but as softly textured, as the highest quality silk. Aromas of wild cherry, violets, licorice and tar are in a tight, nascent state at this young stage. This implies they will blossom with time, coming into focus with greater intensity and complexity as the wine continues its careful bottle aging. This wine shows an evident mineral signature at the back. 96 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Rocche dell’Annunziata 2015 £1,025 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

Explosive, heady strawberry and kirsch fruit. Luscious and aromatic, heady and full flavoured with a silky delicate texture and lingering fruity finish. For the hedonist. A prime mid vineyard plot turning from east to west. The sandy clay and limestone soils give a very elegant, silky red fruited wine. A great vineyard in the Annunziata sub zone of La Morra. Perhaps the most robust and solid of the three wines by Roberto Voerzio tasted this year, the 2015 Barolo Rocche dell'Annunziata is built like a little tank, or motor, that keeps moving forward no matter what. You taste that spirit and determination thanks to the elegantly aligned fruit and spice flavors that make up the wine's elaborate profile. However, I also taste the 2015 vintage characteristics of rich and concentrated fruit to a greater degree in the Rocche dell'Annunziata. There is a point of softness here that you don't get in Fossati or Cerequio. I tasted the open bottle again 24 hours later and was treated to beautiful notes of mint and balsam herb. 97 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Barolo Fossati 2015 £1,025 c/s In Bond (6 bottles per case)

The first vintage standing on its own two feet. New laws passed in 2010 stopped the mention of anything other than a vineyard or brand name on a Barolo label. This meant Fossati / Case Nere had to stop. Case Nere will become the 10 years-on Riserva, whilst the fruit of the relatively young Fossati vines, since 2010, had been used as part of the regular Nebbiolo. The vines are older now but Voerzio only wants to make the best of the best, so has only made 4800 bottles of this from 20,000 plants in its debut vintage! A fuller, burlier structure that points to Barolo a little more than it does La Morra. Bursts of hedgerow fruit, blueberry and sea salt. Muscly but with good juiciness. Fullsome but tangy and lively. The 2015 Barolo Fossati is slightly more accessible (by the smallest of margins) with well-defined fruit notes of wild berry and redcurrant, followed by rose hip, spice and dusty mineral or crushed slate. This wine is enormously focused and sharp, right down to its deep inner core, with elegant padding and layering at the back. It shows volume and length. The textural fiber of this wine is slightly more relaxed. This is an elegantly constructed and conceived expression of Nebbiolo from one of La Morra's most gifted artisans. 95 Points, Monica Larner, The Wine Advocate

Roberto Voerzio Barolo Parcel Offer 2015

A case of each of the following wines:

Barolo Brunate, La Serra, Cerrequio, Rocche dell’Annunziata & Fossati.

£2,675 In Bond per Parcel (3 bottles per case, 5 cases)

Barolo La Serra 2015

A Barolo of classical, chiselled shape. Towering and statuesque. Clear stony and mineral characteristics, on the more serious side of the spectrum but less austere than it can be. There is a tremendous juiciness here and a cleansing finish. Intense, beautifully proportioned and well-defined. Vibrant cherry and berry fruits mingled with fresh herb and dry stone characteristics. Robust but toned. A stunningly bright, uplifting La Morra Barolo. This is Voerzio’s highest Barolo vineyard, situated in the commune of La Morra, at between 380 to 430 metres above sea level. This is an exotic and opulent La Serra with ripe-fruit, orange-peel and terracotta aromas, as well as dust. Full body, polished yet chewy tannins and an extremely rich and long finish. Astonishing power and richness. Austerity with class. Reminds me of the perfect 1997. Better after 2025. 100 Points, James Suckling

Barolo Brunate 2015

Fleshier, more savoury and powerful than Cerequio yet this still retains a nice shape and quality of fruit. Lifted red berry fruits are joined by grounding elements such as earth, cinnamon and mineral. Open-knit flavours cloak a solid bone structure, yet there are more curves to this than can often be the case when young. Reserved but not austere. A very well-balanced Brunate. One of the great crus of Barolo, situated high up in the La Morra commune just underneath La Serra, with an east / south East exposure. Aged for two years in a mixture of barriques and large cask (30% new oak), only 500 bottles were produced. A marvelous red with superb depth and structure. Strength with finesse. Aromas of graphite, burnt orange, steak tartar, iron and rust that follow through to a full body. Yet, it’s tight and poised with such refinement and beauty. Fabulous. Drink after 2022 and onwards. 99 Points, James Suckling

Due to the tiny production of the Brunate and La Serra,

we cannot offer these wines for sale on their own, only included in the parcel offer.
