Collect Homework– Cell Metaphor Assignment
Notes: Plants & Protists– Specialized Plant Organelles– Protists: Jack of All Trades
Plant Specific Organelles
Plants cells have all of the organelles that Animal cells do.
They also have a few organelles that animals do not have.– Cell Wall– Chloroplasts– Central Water Vacuole
Cell Wall The cell wall surrounds the
membrane of plant cells. It is made of a tough,
fibrous material called cellulose.
It provides support and protection for the cell.
Chloroplasts Chloroplasts are the organelles where
photosynthesis occurs. Photosynthesis is when light energy is
captured and used to combine water and carbon dioxide into glucose (sugar).
Central Water Vacuole The central water vacuole is a large
vacuole in plants that stores water. It also keeps turgor pressure, which is
the pressure exerted on the cell wall that helps a plant remain upright.
BrainPOP: Cell Types
Protists Protists are very diverse lifeforms.
They are eukaryotic organisms that may
be unicellular or multicellular and may be consumers or producers.
There are 3 categories of protists– Animal-Like– Plant-Like– Fungus-Like
Protozoans (Animal-Like)
Unicellular, so similar to bacteria Eukaryotic, so similar to plants & animals Protozoans move by use of flagella, cilia,
or pseudopods.
Pseudopod Movement
Pseudopods are also called ‘false feet’
Cell membrane pushes in one direction & the cytoplasm flows into the bulge. The protozoan moves by dragging the rest of the cell behind it.
Pseudopods can also be used to surround and trap food
Pseudopod Feeding

Algae (Plant-Like) Some algae are multicellular, so they are
similar to plants (kelp/seaweed) Euglena are unicellular algae that perform
photosynthesis, but will act like consumers when there is no sunlight
Euglenoid Video
Slime Molds (Fungus-Like) These “blobs” are decomposers who
move to feed on dead material Like plants these have cell walls, but
the wall is not made of cellulose

Summary Plants Cells Contain:
– Chloroplasts– Cell Wall– Central Water Vacuole
Protists– Animal-Like (Protozoans)– Plant-Like (Algae)– Fungus-Like (Slime Molds)
