Employment. Although the number of managers remains below the 2011

level, it increased by 8% y-o-y in 2016 (3,200 positions added, mainly in the

private sector).

Workforce in Prague: Employ-

ment by General Occupation,

2011-2016

Almost 16,000 white collar jobs and

nearly 5,000 blue collar jobs were add-

ed in Prague in 2016. The shift from

blue collar to white collar jobs has con-

tinued, as cumulative change in the

2011-2016 period is plus 28,700 white

collar and 2,400 blue collar jobs.

Although the number of managers re-

mains below the 2011 level, it increased

by 8% y-o-y in 2016 (3,200 positions

added, mainly in the private sector).

The numbers of professionals, techni-

cians and clerical workers exceed their

2011 values, most notably in the case of

professionals (an increase by 11%, or

17,300 positions, since 2011, mainly in

the private sector). Private sector tech-

nicians added the highest number of

positions (7,000) y-o-y in 2016. Techni-

cians (33%), professionals (30%) and

managers (8%) total 71% of all employ-

ment in the region, which is slightly up

from 2011.

In the 2011-2016 period, more jobs

were added in the private sector

(27,600) than in the public sector

(3,500). The number of managers and

plant, machine operators, assemblers

have decreased by 5% and 2%, respec-

tively, since 2011. Craftsmen recorded

the greatest y-o-y increase in relative

number (9%) in 2016. The ratio of pri-

vate sector employees to public sector

employees rose from 4.29:1 to 4.41:1

between 2011 to 2016.

General Occupation, 2011-2016

In Prague in 2011-2016, all occupa-

tional categories in the public sector

experienced double digit median

wage growth ranging from over 12%

to over 23%. In the private sector,

managers recorded the lowest medi-

an wage growth (–4.6% ), while plant,

machine operators, assemblers saw

their median wages rise by 15.4% in

the period. Also, in 2016, private sec-

tor managers saw their wages grow

by –3.1% y-o-y , which is the only

negative growth among all occupa-

tional categories in both sectors. Me-

dian wage of private sector plant, ma-

chine operators, assemblers recorded

the highest y-o-y growth (8.9%)

among all occupational categories in

both sectors.

In 2016, approximately 34% of the total compensation in the private sector and 41% of compensations in the public

sector were paid to professionals. Also, 29% of compensation in the private sector and 40% in the public sector

were paid to someone working in a technical occupation. On the one hand, professionals in both sectors and public

sector technicians increased their slice of the wage pie during the 2011-2016 period. On the other hand, managers

dropped from 16% to 13% of private sector compensations in the 2011-2016 period.

ers, Median Wage, 2011-2016

In the 2011-2016 period, the number

of managers dropped (by 5%). Their

median pay fell (-4.6%) in the private

sector and rose (23.4%) in the public

sector. The public sector increase is

the largest wage increase among all

occupational categories in both sec-

tors in the 2011-2016 period). In

2016, 3,100 private sector managerial

jobs were added. Private sector man-

ager median pay fell by 3.1% y-o-y,

while public sector managers saw

their median wage rise by 5.1% y-o-y.

2016

The number of professionals in-

creased by 11% in 2011-2016 (by 3%

y-o-y in 2016). Their median wage

rose by 7.9% in the private sector and

by 18.4% in the public sector in the

2011-2016 period (2.1% and 5.8% y-o

-y, respectively, in 2016). Profession-

als in the private sector are catching

up with managers in terms of median

wage, while those in the public sector

have fallen further behind. The gap

between professional and technician

pay is significantly larger in the pri-

vate sector than in the public sector.

The pay gap between private and

public sector professionals has nar-

2016

The number of technicians grew by

8% (13,700 jobs) in 2011-2016.

Public sector technicians overtook

private sector technicians in median

wage during the period 2011-2016.

Technicians had the second lowest

median wage increase (5.6%) among

the private sector occupations in the

period, and the third largest median

wage growth (18.7%) among the pub-

lic sector occupations. In 2016, public

sector technicians had the third larg-

est median wage increase (6.7% y-o-

y) after private sector plant, machine

operators, assemblers (8.9%) and

public sector clerical workers (7.3 %).

Median Wage, 2011-2016

In 2011-2016, the number of clerical

employees grew by 4%. Their median

wage increased by 19.3% in the public

sector (the second largest growth

among public sector occupational cate-

gories) and 8.1% in the private sector

(the third largest growth among private

sector occupational categories).

In 2016, public sector clerical workers

along with public sector technicians

earned a greater median wage than

their private sector counterparts.

The pay gap between public and private

sector clerical employees has widened

Median Wage, 2011-2016

In 2016, craftsmen recorded the great-

est y-o-y increase in number (9%), fol-

lowed by managers (8%).

In 2011-2016, private sector craftsmen

had the second largest median wage

growth (9.2%) among six private sector

occupational categories, after plant,

machine operators, assemblers (15.4%).

Public sector craftsmen had the second

lowest (but still 14.2%) median wage

growth among the public sector occu-

pations. The pay gap between private

and public sector craftsmen narrowed

slightly.

In 2016, public sector craftsmen

earned the lowest median wage

among all occupational categories in

both sectors, despite the positive y-o-y

median wage increase (3.5%).

In Prague, the number of plant, ma-

chine operators, assemblers has been

growing, but remains below the 2011

level.

In the period 2011-2016, plant, ma-

chine operators, assemblers saw the

largest median wage growth among

the six occupational categories in the

private sector (15.4%).

In 2016, private sector plant, machine

operators, assemblers earned the low-

est median wage among six private

sector occupational categories, but rec-

orded the largest median y-o-y wage

growth (8.9%) among all occupational

categories in both sectors.
