Session 2: Insurance

All outgoing exchange students are required to purchase relevant travel/

medical/healthinsurancefortheentireperiodofexchange.Youshouldensure

thatyouarecoveredbycomprehensivehealth,accident,personalpropertyand

travelinsurance,especiallyifyouplantotravelforpersonalleisureduringthe

exchangeperiod.

1. Makesureyouaremedicallyfitandyouhavemetthehealthrequirementset

bythehostcountrybeforeyoudepart.

2. Leaveacopyoftheinsurancepolicyandnumbertoyourfamily.

Session 3: Academic Matters

Beforeyourdeparture,youneedtosettlesomeacademicmatters.

Maintain your student status at UMWhilestudyingabroadasanexchangestudent,youarestillrequiredtomaintainyour

normalstudentstatusatUM.Inordertodothis,youmustfollowtheseimportant

steps:

1. Informandconfirmwiththeprogramcoordinatorand/orexchangecoordinator

at the General Office of your faculty. You may need supporting documents

suchasAcceptanceofOffer/AdmissionLetterissuedbythehostuniversity.Itis

crucialthatyouobtainanofficialletterofapprovalfromtheuniversityyouwillbe

exchangedto.

2. Applyforcredittransfer,ifapplicable,atyourfacultyoffice.Studentsareadvised

to consult the relevant programme coordinator/academic advisor for advice

on academic issues. It is important that you keep your exchange coordinator

updatedofanychangesofthecoursestakenduringexchange,especially,when

youfindthatsomeofyourchosencoursesarenotofferedduringyourexchange,

orwhen youwish to select other courses that you considermore interesting/

useful. Beforemakinganychanges, youmust seekapproval from the relevant

facultyinUM.Otherwise,therewouldbeachancethatyourcoursestakenduring

exchangewillnotbetransferredbacktoUM.

o Getanuniversityemailaccountandinformyourfamilyandfriendsof

yournewemailaddress

o Openabankaccount,fordepositingalargeamountofcash(ifany)and

settlealloutstandingbillsbeforeyouendtheexchange

Session 5: Arrival Arrangement

• Check the date of orientation programmes. If there is no specific

programme for incoming students, try to arrive at least a fewdays in

advanceofthefirstdayofteaching.

• Confirmyourarrivaldetailsand informyourhall/hostel/host familyof

yourarrivaldateandtimewellinadvance.

• Makesureyouhavethenecessaryinformationandlocalcurrencytoget

fromtheairporttothehall/residence.

After arriving at Host University:• Keepyourdoorlockedallthetime.• Neverallowstrangerstoenteryourapartmentorroom.• Reportanysuspiciousbehaviortothehallmanager/hostfamilyimmediately.• Learnthefireexitsinyourdormitoryandknowyourescaperoute.• Makesureallthefireandsmokealarmsareinworkingorder.

Session 7: General Safety Guidelines for Natural Disaster• Staycalm!• Donotuseelevators.• Disconnectallelectricalappliances.• Secureanescapebyopeningawindowordoor.• Discuss emergency evacuation sites and routes with friends, host familymembers,andworkoutmethodsofcontactingeachother.

• Placeawettowelacrossyournoseandmouthtopreventsmokeinhalation.• Ifyouareincountrypronetoearthquakes,ensureyouhavesecuredfurnitureandother easily toppled items so that they donot fall over. If there is anearthquake,getunderastudytableordesktoavoidfallingobjects.Stayawayfrom concreteblock fences or largeobject such as vendingmachines thatcouldfallover.Findsomethingthick/hardtoprotectyourhead.

• Listentotheradiofornewsandinstructions.• If you are in the trainorotherpublic transportations, follow thedirectionsofthepersonnel incharge. Ifyouareonthestreet,findsomethinghardtoprotectyourheadfromfallingobjects.Ifyouareinapublicarea,becarefultoavoidpanic-strickencrowdsrushingtowardexitsorstairways.
