    Term 3 Week 9 18 September 2014

    PrEP Market Day

  • Compassion – We put others first

“Don’t do anything from selfish ambition or from a cheap desire to boast, but be humble towards one another, always considering others better than yourselves. And look out for one another’s interests, not just for your own. The attitude you should have is the one that Christ Jesus had.” Philippians 2:3-4 (GNB)

    18 September Issue: 26/14

    Principal ’ s Ponderings…

Kia ora Parents. One of the main reasons a pupil can achieve well is a strong and healthy partnership between home and school. This provides maximum opportunity for the child to develop their God-given gifts and abilities. In order for the partnership to begin well at the start of 2015, we are entertaining the idea of running Learning Conferences instead of the usual Meet-the-Teacher evening. The aim of the Learning Conferences would be to encourage a positive and confident start for all concerned. This should help to dispel any unnecessary worries or anxiety around beginning a new year with a different teacher (and with a new class for those entering year 5, 7 and 9). It would also provide the opportunity for the parent(s), pupil, and the teacher to learn more about each other before the teaching of the curriculum commenced. Some of the things that would be discussed are:

Parent/pupil perspective of the child’s strengths and areas of improvement

Any current challenges that were being faced by the pupil

What a “normal” day at home would look like for the child

Setting goals for the term/year Classroom programme, expectations/culture, and

    routines Explaining effective communication strategies

between parent/teacher Shared standards for homework/project completion

You may be wondering how the Learning Conferences would be organised. Please read below for more details:

The Learning Conferences would most likely be run on Thursday 29 January and Friday 30 January.

These dates would be counted as school days and so all children will be expected to attend these conferences. Any child not attending will be marked absent for both days.

Normal classes would begin on Monday 2 February at 8.50am (Year 0-8) and 8.40am (Year 9-10).

Parents need to book a 20 minute slot with their child’s teacher through an online booking system. Once their conference is finished, the child will be able to leave and return home.

A suggested time frame as to when we would run the 20 minute conferences would be: Thursday 12pm – 8pm and Friday 12pm – 6pm.

I would welcome your feedback on this topic. There are at least two schools in our immediate area that have run these conferences over the last two years and the feedback from parents, pupils, and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive. Please think about this carefully and if you have any questions or comments, email me on [email protected] Many blessings to all, Steve Frost (Principal)

    Tips for Learning

Year 7-10: Writing [by Alisha Woods] Updating the Tool Kit: When students write, they use the tools which are already in their tool belt. In other words, they draw upon their knowledge of vocabulary and language structures which have been acquired during their previous years of learning. At Years 7-10, the writing tools they have been using in the past are no longer sufficient. They need an upgrade! Just as more complicated jobs on a building site require more sophisticated tools, so the writing tasks in the senior school require more sophisticated vocabulary and language structures. Yes, but how? - Ensure your young person has access to a thesaurus so

they can experiment with new words. Try using www.thesaurus.com.

    - Encourage wide reading of range of texts. Students working at this level are required to write in a range of genre and need to have the language tools to do this. Reading novels, news articles, non-fiction texts and poetry will support the development of the range of writing skills they need.

    - There is actually one book which is powerfully enriching in both content and language, and that is the Bible! Encourage your young person to read different books of the Bible. Be available to discuss some of the complex ideas and insightful life-changing truths presented in God’s Word. They will not only be enriched in their language experience, but will also discover the One who is ever-present to help them on their journey.
