PRESENTATION OF THE STUDSVIK GROUP

Studsvik offers a broad and competitive portfolio of services for nuclear facilities in operation or being decommissioned. Our offer refl ects customers’ needs and includes waste treatment, decommissioning, engineering and services, and operating effi ciency. The company has developed 11 key offerings in these areas.

Processing of radioactive wasteStudsvik offers treatment of low and inter-mediate level waste at its own facilities in Studsvik outside Nyköping in Sweden, and in Erwin and Memphis, Tennessee in the US. Another facility is being built in Workington, UK, where Studsvik is licensed to process low level waste. The facilities in Sweden process dry and metallic waste, mainly from nuclear facilities in Europe, by incineration and melting. The Erwin facility treats wet waste using the unique Studsvik-developed pyrolysis process.

In Memphis, low level waste is reduced in volume using other methods. The purpose of waste treatment is mainly to achieve volume reduction and stabilization of waste before fi nal disposal.

On-site waste servicesWaste treatment is also carried out at custo-mers’ own sites; for example characterization, sorting and packaging of waste, stabilization and solidifi cation of wet waste, compacting of dry waste and measurement of radioactivity in waste before treatment and recycling.

Engineering and consultancy servicesEngineers and consultants with experience of the nuclear industry are currently in short supply and will be for some time to come. Studsvik offers expert support in waste management and decommissioning, as well as all related areas such as health physics and environmental issues. We also offer engine-ering and advisory services covering design, nuclear safety, fuels, core and materials.

Health physics servicesPersonnel at nuclear facilities are at risk of ex-posure to ionizing radiation. Work in classifi ed environments always requires measurement and analysis of radiation levels, with minimi-zation of doses. Studsvik offers health physics services, including supervision and planning, and manufactures and services personal dosi-meters that register radiation doses.

Transport and logisticsThe movement of radioactive material is subject to strict national and international re-gulatory frameworks. Studsvik transports waste and other material to and from customer facili-ties; in the US mainly using its own trucks.

Decommissioning servicesThe decommissioning process is long and com-plicated. Studsvik’s services cover everything from feasibility studies, planning and project management to practical dismantling and subsequent waste management.

Our offer

The Group’s 11 offerings are based on customer needs and every offering covers a number of products and services.

Operational and outage supportService and maintenance requirements in a nuclear power plant are substantial. All systems and components in classified environments need frequent maintenance and cleaning to guarantee safe operation throughout the lifetime of the facility.Studsvik can offer mechanical servicing, decontamination (removal of radioactivity) and general property maintenance at nuclear facilities.

Fuel and materials performanceBoth fuel rods and other material associated with a reactor are subject to severe strain during operation. To ensure that fuel and fuel cladding retain the properties required for secure and stable operation for as long as possible these properties are tested in Studsvik’s laboratories. Tests of materials to check durability in various operational situa-tions and conditions over the full lifecycle are also conducted in Studsvik’s own laborato-ries. Studsvik also offers tests in a reactor en-vironment in collaboration with the Institute for Energy Technology IFE in Norway.

Materials integrity and water chemistryCrack growth measurements and other corrosion studies are conducted on non-irradiated and irradiated material in order to

reduce fuel and material related operational disruptions, secure the service life of mate-rials and counteract and reduce radioactive dose loads in nuclear power plants.

Nuclear fuel analysis softwareFuel is a substantial cost item for nuclear power plants. Consequently, there are con-siderable gains to be made from optimizing fuel consumption. Studsvik’s software for optimizing reactor operation is a world leader. The software includes applications for in-core fuel management, core monito-ring, transient analysis, simulators and ana-lysing spent nuclear fuel. They are used for both the licensing and design of light water reactors and real time calculations for reactor operation.

Design and buildWhen customers need customized facilities or equipment Studsvik can take overall responsibility for designing and supplying a solution. We also upgrade and modernize existing facilities. Our areas of expertise include waste facilities, special equipment for dismantling, and ventilation systems. We also manufacture customer-specified equipment for new nuclear power plants, for example.

PRESENTATION OF THE STUDSVIK GROUP

Our operationsInterest in expanding nuclear power is increasing in many parts of the world. New reactor types are being developed and older facilities phased out.

Power-generating reactors are being modernized, older reactors decommissioned and new reactors built and planned. At the same time waste from civil and military research programs must be taken care of. In many countries there is a shortage of space for storage and final disposal of low and intermediate level waste and storage costs are high. This creates a market for qualified services where Studsvik is at the forefront of development.

There is a demand in the nuclear power industry for responsible methods of dealing

with waste and residual products. This creates a demand for Studsvik’s processing methods for radioactive waste for final disposal or free release and recycling.

Power producers are increasingly developing their processes, streamline operations and optimize power extrac-tion from fuel. Studsvik’s software for fuel optimization and core monitoring, and services such as laboratory testing of fuel and materials, are world leaders. The need for consulting and service is increasing, and Studsvik is a strong player there too.

PRESENTATION OF THE STUDSVIK GROUP

The moderization programs in Swedish nuclear power plants continue to gene-rate business for Studsvik. The German and UK markets are also expected to have large amounts of waste to be processed.

Studsvik’s facilities in Sweden treat low and intermediate level waste from Europe. The aim is to compress and stabilize the waste and recycle metals that, after free release, can be used again as raw materials for industry.

Metallic waste is decontaminated, segmen-ted and melted. In that way the radioactivity is separated and the amount of residual waste minimized.

Dry organic waste such as protective clothing, plastic and paper are reduced in volume by incineration.

Studsvik’s operation has recently been extended and large components, such as steam generators and reactor vessel heads, can now be processed there. Using Studsvik’s treatment methods, up to 95% of the material in these components can be reused in the industry.

The UK waste treatment market is growing. In order to best meet demand, Studsvik is building a treatment facility in the UK which will complement the facilities in Sweden.

PRESENTATION OF THE STUDSVIK GROUP

Since the new Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) was formed in the United Kingdom, extensive cleanup operations have been started in the country’s nuclear facilities. This provides new opportunities for Studsvik, which has established a strong base in this market in a short timespan.

In 2005 Studsvik established operations in the United Kingdom and quickly became one of the leading actors in decommissio-ning and waste management. Most of the operations are conducted at the customers’ facilities, but some waste from the UK is processed in Sweden.

Demand for Studsvik’s services comes not only from the NDA, but also from the pri-vate nuclear power industry in the UK and from the defence industry.

Through a combination of acquisition and organic growth, Studsvik has expanded its consultant role and is currently able to offer specialist services in several areas. Studsvik is also a partner in the UK Nuclear Waste Management consortium, which has signed a multi-year contract to operate the United Kingdom’s low-level nuclear waste deposi-tory.

Studsvik is building a facility for treating metallic waste in Workington, near Sellafi eld. It will become operational in early 2009.

Germany is the base for Studsvik’s European operations. Here the focus is partly on decommissioning facilities, and partly on technical and maintenance services for nuclear power plants in operation.

Operations also include contracts in neighboring countries, such as Switzerland, Belgium, France and the Netherlands. Studsvik’s customers include all the nuclear power plants in Germany, as well as research facilities, universities and fuel factories.

Waste from the German market is treated in Sweden and residual products containing all the radioactivity from the original material is subsequently returned to the customer.

Studsvik has an engineering workshop in Germany. Several methods and systems have been developed there, including methods for cutting pipes from the inside in radioactive environments. This makes it easier to work when pipes are close together or when a middle pipe needs to be cut without damaging the surrounding material. The workshop in Germany also developed Studsvik’s system for deconta-minating building surfaces.

Through acquisition and organic growth, Studsvik has successively built up an exten-sive consulting business in fi elds such as health physics and safety analysis.

Operations in the USA are dominated by three of Studsvik’s key offerings: processing of radioactive waste, on-site waste services and transport and logistics services associated with waste management.

Customers in the USA are mainly from the commercial nuclear power industry and also include research institutions and nuclear power producers in Canada.

Studsvik has its own facilities in Memphis and Erwin in the State of Tennessee. Wet low level and intermediate level waste is treated in Erwin using the Studsvik-patented THORSM pyrolysis technology. THORSM ensu-res that organic material can be destroyed

Studsvik is one of the world’s foremost independent suppliers of fuel optimiza-tion software, materials technology and analysis. These services are gathered in the Global Services segment.

Global Services offers services in operating effi ciency. Testing and analysis of nuclear fuel and material, corrosion and water chemistry studies and fuel optimization software are a few examples.

About half of the world’s nuclear power

at relatively low temperatures without releasing harmful substances.

Other organic waste, low-level metal scrap and dry waste is treated in Memphis. Apart from this, there are trucks that take care of the logistics for both facilities. Studsvik’s specialist skills in transportation of hazardous material are also offered as an independent service to the nuclear power industry.

Studsvik has taken a market initiative and offers, in cooperation with Waste Control Specialists (WCS) in Texas, a competitive storage alternative based on treatment of waste in the Studsvik Erwin facility and storage at the WCS facility in Texas.

plants use Studvik’s fuel optimization software and core monitoring. In practice Studsvik is the only independent player in the market. Other software is supplied by the fuel manufacturers themselves.

Studsvik is one of the world’s foremost independent suppliers of tests, exami-nations and analyses of nuclear fuel and material. The examinations are conducted at Studsvik’s laboratories in Sweden in cooperation with the Institute for Energy Technology in Norway.
