General information of Scotland
The most important cities of Scotland are Edinburgh and Glasgow. Listen and read.
Edinburgh is a city on the east coast of Scotland. It has also been the capital since 1437.
The town is dominated by the Edinburgh castle. It was built in the seventh century. Since the eleventh century it has been used as the royal residence. Before that, it was a formidable fortress in the sixteenth century.
Edinburgh has many interesting places such as: - the Royal Botanic Garden, - the Cathedral of Saint-Gilles,- the National Gallery,- Charlotte Square, - the Scott Monument and - the Royal Museum of Scotland.
The Palace of Holyroodhouse (Holyrood Palace) is the official residence of the queen when staying in the city. Edinburgh is famous for its festivals, and is home to the largest in the world, which lasts three weeks in August.
Glasgow is the largest city in Scotland and third most populous in the United Kingdom.
The city is situated on the River Clyde in the country's west central lowlands.
A person from Glasgow is known as a Glaswegian.
Glasgow has seen more changes in the past two decades than almost any other British city.
Glasgow was chosen as a European City of Culture in 1990.
The city has many outstanding places to visit:
- The Glasgow Botanic Gardens, - the Kibble Palace that has been
renovated, - the Glasgow Art Gallery,- the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art.
