Useful ideas for old tyres
Tyres should not be disposed of at the Batchelor tip but can be taken to the Shoal Bay
Waste Transfer Station in Darwin. Did you know that approximately 50 million tyres are discarded in Australia every year but they can be recycled.
Search the internet for some useful and creative ways to use your old tyres. There are some great ideas, such as a place to store your tools. Drill a few holes in a tyre, add some wire hooks and you have a place to hang the tools that you regularly use. Tyres can be used to create garden beds and retaining walls.
Here are examples of some other useful ideas found on the internet:
Interesting idea for recycling
ABC News 20 May 18 In the small town of Kamikatsu in Japan food scraps are mostly composted and more than 80% per cent of other waste is recycled. The remaining 20% that cannot be recycled is incinerated, generating power and heating local facilities like pools. The locals have to sort their waste into 45 different categories and the town is working towards zero waste going to landfill by 2020. Currently just 1% of Japan's council waste goes into land-fill, compared to 49% in Australia, according to OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development.

BATCHELOR MUSEUM UPDATE - June 2018
Batchelor Museum is open everyday from 10am—4pm
Located on the Corner of Tarkarri Road & Kirra crescent, Batchelor
Contact: Jan Hills 08 8976 7006
————————————————————————————————--
There has been a steady start to the Tourist season with travellers coming by the Museum , and in many cases, staying for refreshments afterwards. Denise is kept busy on the five days she is opening the cafe. Whilst Denise will be accompanying James to Adelaide next week Carol will continue the excellent service at the café.
The garden club held their meeting at Barking Owls cafe earlier in the month and enjoyed the pleasant surroundings, Members gifted some plants to Denise and she has subsequently added to those plants which enhance the entrance and café area. It was a happy occasion and the club intends to meet at Barking Owls regularly.
Some readers may be unaware that the café is called “Barking Owls” and the name is in recognition of the lovely sound the owls produce. There have been two sets of baby owls born in trees around the Museum and we have a postcard available which depicts two chicks- so illustrative of the owls presence around the town. On nights when I have stayed in Batchelor it has been a joy to hear the owls in the early hours of morning and I enjoy sending those cards to tell people interstate about them.
Also happening in the coming week is the arrival of our caretaker couple, John and Michelle, on Wednesday. They will set up their caravan in the usual site and supervise the Museum for five days. Sue and Sean will continue to open the Museum on Wednesday and Thursday. ,
The tour group, Ethical Adventures, continues to come to the Museum several times a week now the tourist season is in action. Rob cooks lunch for his guests whilst they look through the Museum and then they eat in the café area which is set up especially to accom-modate the numbers for the particular day. Denise has cooperated with Rob as this has evolved so that the regular tour group can depend on quality of experience for their overseas and interstate participants. It also provides an opportunity for the visitors to purchase souvenirs, books and ice creams etc so works well for both parties. Rob is especially pleased to use the café space now as some of his tour groups have difficulty with eating outside, the heat, insects etc.
Denise has welcomed a new volunteer at the Museum and Julie spent time on Saturday with Denise to experience what is entailed with setting out the signs and welcoming visitors to the Museum etc. Julie works during the week but has made time to volunteer, and Denise was happy to have an enthusiastic and cheerful helper Thankyou Julie!
President, Jan Hills
DONATIONS to BATCHELOR
MUSEUM
Whilst the Batchelor Museum is primarily an interpretive one, we have been given some wonderful display items. When you visit you will see the name on the ob-ject and the person who has donated it- some of the notices are yet to be done.
Items must be given permanently to the Museum and there is a form which we will have available- the format given to us from the Military Museum in Darwin, please be aware this is a common policy of museums.
Be proud of the Museum – it will showcase the unique town of Batchelor and will be a valuable resource to bring visitors from all over.

HOW ARE YOU AT SHARING?
The Bushfires NT Facebook page continues to grow, with our following more than doubling over the last 9 months. Since March, Bushfires NT has published well over 300 social media posts (Facebook and Twitter). This is on average more than 1 per day.
There is still a lot to be done in this space to increase public awareness of Bushfires NT. In fact, there is
something very simple that you can do to help. If you haven’t already, get on to www.facebook.com/
BushfiresNT and like or share some of posts. By sharing our information/stories on your newsfeed, it cre-
ates more exposure for Bushfires NT. This provides us with a greater opportunity to access more of the
community, and keep people up-to-date with important bushfire safety information.
