Principal’s Message
Barbara Miller
As we slide into February, we are reminded that it is a Manitoba winter and our students need to be dressed appropriately to enjoy the great outdoors when the
temperature is warmer than -27⁰ C (with the wind chill).
We have a busy month ahead with I Love to Read activities, the Winter Classic, our middle years We Can Make a Difference presentation, Hundred Day, Valentine’s Day, the Early Bird Basketball Jamboree, and our band concerts. Please check your child’s agenda/backpack for the Winter Classic off-site package that was sent home on Wednesday. We are in the process of organizing swimming lessons for our grade 3/4 classes and more information will be sent home as our plans are finalized. For more information on these events, please look further into the newsletter.
This past month, our middle years students spent a day focusing on career choices in technology and trades with a presentation on the employment outlook for Manitoba in these areas. The students were taught how to create a resume and were introduced to a computer program called Career Cruising to help them select possible career field based on an interest survey within the program.
Registration packages for next year will be sent home in the coming weeks. Please complete the registration package and return it to the school as soon as possible. Having this information helps us plan and staff appro-priately to meet the needs of our students. If you com-pleted a Special Request for enrollment because you moved out of the catchment area, you need to register at your catchment area school and fill out a School of Choice form if you wish to remain at King George. Decisions regarding School of Choice are made in June. If you require further information, please contact us and we would be happy to assist you!
Happy Valentine’s Day!

King George Library News
We celebrated the New Year in the library with lots of new books. Thanks to the hard work of our library parent volunteers in December, we have a large collection of new books ready for students to read. All classes were invited to preview our latest additions. Students were engaged using Book Talks, which are brief introductions to a book with the intent to grab the audience's interest and make them want to read the book. Students are now able sign out and enjoy these new books and they are very excited to check them out!
February is I Love to
Read Month I Love to Read is an annual month-long celebration to encourage reading, writing and sharing in the joy of literacy. Classrooms, schools, and libraries across Manitoba will be planning activities to celebrate and promote a life-long appreciation of literacy, reading, and books. We invite you to join in our celebrations this month. Monday, February 6 Reading Camp Out

Wednesday, February 8 Read My Shirt Day Please wear a shirt that has words on it and is appropri-ate for school!
Thursday, February 9 Design a book cover or
book mark day. Design a new cover or a bookmark for a favourite book
from home or school. Friday, February 10 Pyjama Day
Wear your pyjamas to school and curl up with a good book. Bring your slippers, blankets, pillows, and stuffies!
Also be on the lookout for special guest readers visiting our classrooms this month.
Happy Reading!
With the new year comes a new crop of geniuses!
In January, three more classes at King George began implementing Genius Hour once per six day cycle. I am lucky to be able to work collaboratively with Mrs. Kelly, Mr. Ketcheson and Ms. Meadows to introduce this personalized learning opportunity within these class-rooms. The focus is on exploring the 21st century skills within a self-directed learning context. I am excited to see all the creative ideas that are generated in 2017! Feel free to ask your child about this exciting learning opportunity, and have them explain what Genius Hour is all about.

2017 Skilled Trades and Technology Showcase
Eight Grade 8 students and three advisors attended Crocus Plains High School on January 19th for the Skilled Trades and Technology Showcase. The students spent the day doing hands-on activities in different trade and technology areas. The sessions the students attended were welding, automotive technology, electronics, design drafting, carpentry, collision repair, and advertising art. This provided the students the op-portunity to learn about their options for secondary schooling and career planning. There was also a presentation from “Safe Workers of Tomorrow” included in the day.
Ms. Clarke and Mrs. DesRoches’ Class During the month of January, we have been really busy with math, reading and writing. The students are practicing their reading daily in our classroom. They are practicing their reading using a soft whisper voice so they can hear how they sound. This builds fluent, independent readers. The children have also been enjoying buddy reading, which is when they practice listening and reading out loud with a partner. The home reading program has been going strong all year. Thumbs up to the parents for their support!! We have been spending a lot of time learning new words to write in our journals. We have been busy building new words that we can write fast and accurate into our daily writing. Also, we have been practicing taking words that are known and building new words. Students have done a great job adding new words to their writing vocabulary!!
In math, we have been learning addition and practicing our mental math strategies through hands on math
stations. We have been using number lines, hundreds charts and rekenreks to learn these skills. Great work!
This month the Kindergarten classes have been learning about Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We were able to make Mama Bear’s secret recipe for porridge. The students helped read the recipe, and followed the directions to make the porridge. Each student contributed to making our porridge by measuring out an ingredient needed to add to the slow cooker. We concluded with a taste test and graph. Most of the students liked the taste of porridge! With all the discussion about bears, it lead us to inquire about real bears. We have been exploring:
Exploring Bear habitats
Hibernation and learning about their diet
Different types of bears: Black Bears, Grizzly Bears, Polar Bears, and Panda Bears. Students have created their own bear dens, and have had the opportunity to learn all about the different types of bear paws imprints through sensory play with play-doh. We are going to wrap up our learning by collaboratively sharing interesting facts we have learned about bears with the other class and making yummy Polar Bear treats. During explorations, the Kindergarten classes were able to get out and enjoy the warmer weather while mixing primary water paint colours to make other colours!

Fun in the Sun! KG students love to snowshoe! With mid-January temperatures soaring, KG students took advantage of the gorgeous weather this week and went outdoors for some snowshoeing fun! Middle years students learned a variety of information and games that incorporated aboriginal perspectives and Canadian history into their physical education lessons. Pictured here are some of our students playing territory and invasion games: “Inukshuk Tag” and “Capture the Flag” all while wearing snowshoes. Ms. Holt Physical Education

BSSAP & FINDING MY WAY PROGRAM 2017 This new year students in the finding my way program have completed the novel “Fatty Legs” a novel based on a young Inuit girl who attends residential school. Students answered questions and also talked about how the residential schools impacted families. For the next couple of weeks we will be learning about the medicine wheel and will cover each quadrant of the wheel. Students will engage, discuss and draw out their own medicine wheels. After that is complete “Culture Week” will be held at King George School. BSSAP & Finding My Way will be preparing & organizing a display area for students to learn about aboriginal culture, traditions and foods. Cultural Week will be held on March 20th to the 24th, 2017. There will also be a cultural evening held on March 23rd, 2017 from 6:30pm - 8:00pm.
