MEMBERSHIP RENEWAL UPDATE

June is normally when we remind our members of the upcoming renewal of our membership. This year, the PROBUS CLUB of Oshawa

Management Team has passed the following motion to waive the membership fee for all members for the year 2021-2022:

"One time cancelling of our Membership Renewal Fee for the year September 2021 to August 2022, as a result of COVID 19 health and safety regulations that meant we have had to cancel all in person General Meetings, Social Events and Special Interest Group gatherings since April 2020. Any New Members that join during this time period would be required to pay only the one time $20.00 administrative fee."

Our Club needs to keep accurate records of our membership for our own use as well as for PROBUS Canada. There have been a few members who have advised they are not renewing as they have moved from the area. If you do not wish your membership to be renewed at no cost for the upcoming year, please email Connie Nelson at [email protected] or call her at (905) 576-9022. GETTING TO KNOW OUR NEWER MEMBERS When life was normal, and we had in person meetings, new PROBUS Club of Oshawa members would be introduced at meetings and we would have an annual New Members Event to get to know each other. Since that is not currently possible, we will be asking new members who have joined since our last New Members Event held in May 2019, to provide a bit of a Biography and Picture for the next few issues of the Newsletter. Please read about the following new members who are contributing to this feature. Please welcome them to our Club!

Fred and Marg Ford Marg and I moved into Oshawa about 10 years ago from Blackstock. Marg is a retired kindergarten teacher and keeps me on the straight and narrow. I was in sales in the pharmaceutical industry. We enjoy movies, dining out, playing cards & other social activities. I

was a Scout leader for many years and continue to volunteer where I can help. Marg dotes on the grandchildren. We both love to attend their events and especially their hockey games. But not this year. We have been married for 53 years; have four grandchildren and our two sons and daughters in law live close by. We are pleased to be members of PROBUS.

Member Care

With a Club such as ours, we need your help to let us know if one of our members is experiencing a serious illness or is hospitalized. Our Club would like to let our ill members and their families know that they are in our thoughts as they deal with their illness with respect to the family’s wishes for privacy. In the same way, we need you to let us know if you become aware that a member, their spouse or close family member has passed on. Often the family does not think to contact our Club, or know who to contact under these difficult circumstances. We would like to respect the wishes of family and give our members the opportunity to express their condolences to the bereaved. Please let us know so we can respond appropriately. Email [email protected] or [email protected].

LOOK WHO IS 90!

Happy 90th

, Marion from your many PROBUS friends!

One of our original PROBUS members, Marion Stevenson, has turned 90 this month. Congratulations Marion! Some of her Oshawa PROBUS friends celebrated her birthday with a wave during a drive by. I first met Marion in the 1980’s working for the Government as temps. We then became bridge partners in early 2000 (As many of you know, Marion plays a pretty mean game of bridge!). As you will also undoubtedly know, Marion is an accomplished artist and spends a lot of her time with paint brush in hand; this is when she is happiest. She has a lovely property in Muskoka where she gets a lot of inspiration for her paintings. Marion has also been a member of the club’s Art Group, one of its first SIGs, and throughout she has been a wonderful coach and inspiration while we experimented with different techniques and media. Marion was born in Oshawa and has 2 sons, 7 grandchildren and, so far, 8 great grandchildren. Marion was active in the Oshawa Skating Club throughout her childhood and into her teens. It was at the age of 17, though, when she started painting in oils. And later on, having always been intrigued by watercolours, she began exploring the medium in 1982 and spent years creating many beautiful watercolour paintings. In addition to watercolours, Marion introduced acrylics on canvas to her repertoire several years ago. She loves the vibrant colours and mood she can create using this medium. She has also done felting and beading as other creative expressions. Marion’s paintings reflect her love of flowers, heritage buildings and the Ontario landscape. An award-winning artist, Marion’s paintings have been shown in galleries in Ontario and in many private, public and corporate collections. Marion still enjoys sitting at her easel, and creating beautiful art. Over the past few years, she began to paint an acrylic for each member of her family (sons, grandchildren and great grandchildren). She is currently finishing a Muskoka sunset painting for her grand-daughter which will mean each family member has a painting done just for them by “Mom/Gramma/GG”. As Marion begins a new decade, I wish her well and look forward to many more years of friendship and association.
