BOOK READING

Book Reading (Evening Group)

A smaller group attended the May meeting, but all

enjoyed this month's book - Our Souls at Night by

Kent Haruf.

A good discussion resulted from the story, which

involved family relationships, infidelity, friendship,

sadness, grief, companionship and ageing. It was

entertaining, easy to read, and played with our

emotions. We all agreed that the ending was very

sad and heartbreaking, but recommend reading it.

Book Reading (Day Group)

The Perfume Collector by Kathleen Tessaro explores the complex and obsessive love between muse and artist and the tremendous power of memory and scent! Majority of our members very much enjoyed reading this book." Beverley Wignall

FINE DINING

“Fine Dining” is a great way to catch up with old and new members of our club. It is fun just to have time to talk and find out more about each other in a pleasant atmosphere, sometimes we find out how close we lived to each other as kids even that we went to the same school. At our next meeting I will hand the leaders of the group an envelope with “Guide Lines” of how to organize your “Fine Dining” outing. All welcome couples, singles and if you would like to join with a special friend just give a call.

FISHING

At 9am on Thursday the 11th of May Seven members of the Fishing Group met at Kilcunda Beach armed with a variety of rods. The day started with a drive through thick fog to get to Kilcunda but the morning sun drove that off and the day was perfect. A light breeze and mild surf with a rising tide set the scene for a great day of fishing.

Despite the promising conditions only three of the target Salmon were caught along with one Toadie and a crab. The group looked the part though and had fun dodging the waves, sometimes, catching weeds and each other's lines and drowning bait.

We fished from 9am until Pub Time at 1pm and adjourned to The Ocean View Hotel for a light lunch. The catch may have been light but we all had a good day fishing!

Neil English & Ray Cooper.

The cabbie’s careless driving was a worry to the expectant mother. “Be careful,’ she said, ‘I’m expecting my fifth child.’ ‘And you’re telling ME to be careful?’ he asked.

Tour of The Convent

Jenny Kereseboom

On Monday 15th May, 14 interested probians visited the Abbotsford Convent. Our guide (named Mary of course) took us on a very informative walking tour around the many beautiful buildings and related to us, the Convent's story. And it is a very diverse one.

The site was the meeting point for the Wurundjiri and Kulin Nation people for thousands of years. In 1838 the land was sub divided then sold in 1850 when four Nuns from the Order of the Good Shepherd arrived in Melbourne to establish a convent where they could care for women and children in need. By 1900, with over 1000 tenants, the convent was the largest charitable institute operating in the southern hemisphere, until in 1975 it was sold to the State with a $5.5 million contribution from the Federal Government. The popular Children’s Farm was then established, and still operates separately. Later in the 1980’s, the rest of the property was taken over by Latrobe University until 1997 when the University campus was closed and the property put up for sale. Developers were desperate for this property, but in 2004 the “Abbotsford Covent Coalition” and the public, finally won the fight to save the convent building. Their focus is now on arts, culture and learning. In 2004, huge restoration works were commenced after years of neglect. Now over ten years on, most of the buildings have been restored. Hundreds of tenants occupy studios and venues which are filled with performances, rehearsals and workshops. The future of the convent is looking bright with restoration projects continuing and attracting further government funding also with a very generous contribution from the philanthropic community. Hopefully this will keep the developers at bay. This very informative visit was topped off with lunch at one of the very inviting cafés in the complex. Jenny Kerseboom

The 1942er's, 75th Birthday Celebration

Our members celebrating their 75th birthday this year joined with their partners for lunch on Sunday 21 May at The Bridge Inn Hotel in Mernda. The group who all went to school in the post war years showed their very sound education talents by bringing along some of their school memorabilia. An early exercise book showed Jennifer Eaton's beautiful writing ability, Elaine's collection of swap cards brought back many memories, Terry's school report from 1951 showed why his career lead him to being a school Principal, his strap was in his collection. Ellen had her skipping rope and slate from grade 1 and others shared their memories of all those years ago. Plans are already in place to celebrate the big 'O' in five years time. Ellen

Beat about the Bush

What to many people is simply good manners is often interpreted by others as evasiveness. Beating about the bush was originally, in the 15

th century, a

way of finding birds at night. Hunters or poachers would tap a stick on the ground or rustle the leaves with it to try and flush out game. This was just a preliminary to the actual capture or killing of a bird, and the phrase came into general use in the sense of a roundabout approach to an awkward problem as opposed to a direct and forthright approach to the real business in hand.

THEATRE.

Always Patsy Cline: Whitehorse Theatre,

Saturday 24th

June at 8.00pm. Tickets $45.00 Celebrate the life and music of one of the greatest female vocalists of all time with one of America’s most loved musicals! Always Patsy Cline is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer; it is a true story based on Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston Texas named Louise Seger. This friendship began in a Texas honky-tonk in 1961 and continued via correspondence until Cline’s tragic death in 1963. This wonderful musical, complete with down home country humour, true emotion and even some audience participation, includes 27 of Patsy’s unforgettable hits such as Crazy, I Fall to Pieces, Sweet Dreams and Walking After Midnight. The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed off “Love ALWAYS Patsy Cline.” Payment has been finalised. Tickets were distributed at the May meeting.

High Society: Lilydale Theatre, Sunday 20th

August at 2.00pm. Tickets $20.00 A musical comedy, lyrics and music by Cole Porter. Tracy Lord's ex-husband, C.K. Dexter Haven, refuses to let her marry the bland George Kittredge as planned and the two reporters who arrive to cover the wedding find much more than they'd anticipated among this niche of high society. Imagine that Philip Barry had written "The Philadelphia Story" his classic 1939 romantic comedy, not as a play but a musical, with Cole Porter as his collaborator, and you have … HIGH SOCIETY! It’s not only the show's title but the show's first song, in which the Lord Family's amazing staff sets the scene (the Lord family lives on a waterfront estate in Oyster Bay now, not Philadelphia). Come join the Lords for a weekend of fun and games! Please put your name down at our June meeting and pay at our July meeting. Tickets will be distributed at the August meeting.

Mirusia from the Heart: Whitehorse Theatre, Saturday 16th

September. Tickets $65.00 Australian soprano Mirusia will present her new concert From the Heart. Let the ‘Angel of Australia’ touch your heart with her songs about the heart – be it those full of love, those still looking for love or hearts broken by love. At a young age Mirusia was discovered by André Rieu and has performed around the world with him for ten years. While touring with André she has had her own successful solo career and has toured internationally with her own chamber orchestra. The most beautiful music from celebrated musicals and classical melodies are the common thread in Mirusia's repertoire. With her rendition of famous songs and her own compositions she captures many hearts. Mirusia will delight her audiences with her charming personality and beautiful soprano voice when she presents songs including Botany Bay, Colours of the Wind, Dvorak’s Song to the Moon and Chopin’s In mir klingt ein Lied. This promises to be a truly magical evening. Please put your name down at our June meeting and pay at our June meeting. Tickets will be distributed at the August and September meetings.

There are no theatre events in July. Further theatre events for 2017 are: Les Miserables: Whitehorse Theatre, Sunday 29

th October at

2.00pm. Tickets $36.00 Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks: Lilydale Theatre, Sunday 19

th November at 2.00pm. Tickets $20.00

EDITOR’S NOTES

Please continue to send items to [email protected], and if possible remember that the font we

use is Arial, size 9. The deadline for the July Newsletter is Friday, 30 June, although anyone wanting to send in material

before that date is welcome to do so. This edition of the newsletter has been printed at the electoral office of Matthew Guy,

Member for Bulleen. When I receive material via email, I will acknowledge receipt as I open it. If an activity is not updated

by the convener, it will disappear. The deadline timeframe is not negotiable. If anyone has general interest material that

can be used to fill in reasonable sized spaces in the newsletter, please forward it to me and I will hold it in an emergency folder.
