Have your say!
Do you have any concerns, comments or suggestions for improving access and inclusion in our
Shire?
The Shire of Kondinin is reviewing its Disability Access and Inclusion Plan and is calling on community members for comments and feedback. Feedback is being sought from community members, in particular people with disability, carers, agencies and service providers. The survey is available in hard copy via the recent Householder survey mail out and is also available on the Shire website by visiting www.kondinin.wa.gov.au. Questionnaires need to be returned to the Shire by Friday 27th July 2018.
UPDATE ON CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS AROUND TOWN Yeerakine Lodge The main building extension to Yeerakine Lodge has now been completed providing four (4) new rooms and an expanded living area for our elderly residents. Andy and Steve from Reality Landscapes are currently up at the Lodge undertaking the paving and landscaping before the extension to Yeerakine Lodge is formally opened which is anticipated to be in August 2018. Andy and Steve have done a few jobs around Kondinin recently Including the landscaping at West Court Retirement Village and creating the Sporting Sculpture Garden adjacent to the Kondinin Bowling Green, both of which look fantastic and the plants growing very well.
Kondinin Community Recreation Centre If you have been down to the Kondinin Sporting Precinct recently you would have noticed that much of the Country Club building has been stripped back ready for the new works to commence. The internal demolition works have now been completed, the service pre-lay has also been completed, and the footings are underway. The roof structure is currently being manufactured off-site before installation.
Both these projects have been made possible through partnerships between Federal and State Government, the Shire of Kondinin and our
wonderful local community groups.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE ON GLASS RECYCLING
The Shire of Kondinin wishes to advise that GLASS is no longer to be placed in recycling bins. From now on glass should be placed in your household general waste bin (green one). Alternatively, glass can be dropped off at the Kondinin and Hyden Waste Transfer Stations in the concrete bunkers provided for this purpose. The Shire is also in the process of locating special glass recycling bins at the Kondinin and Hyden town recycling depots.
Unfortunately glass recycling opportunities are shrinking with supply far in excess of demand. This is more evident in WA where lack of local markets and high transport costs are a contributing factor. As such, most glass is taken out of the recycling stream by the materials recycling facilities and sent to landfill. There is the additional problem where broken glass contaminates the other recyclables such as cardboard which then makes that unable to be recycled. Glass placed in your household general waste bin will be compacted with other waste and will be taken to the Bendering Landfill. The compaction both in the truck and at the landfill site will partially crush the glass which will reduce the additional space it will take up in the landfill.
Glass placed in the special glass bins at the town recycling depots and in the bunkers at the waste transfer station will be stockpiled for the time being and will either be taken to the Bendering Landfill site or alternatively the Shire has access to a glass crusher which can be used to reduce the glass down to a fine grade where it could then be used for fill.
Hopefully in the future the situation will change and there will be a viable market for glass again. State Government initiatives such as the container deposit scheme, due to be rolled out in the next two years, may also help to change the future of glass.
