Minutes for Mountain Laurel Quilt Guild March 20, 2018

Diane Turner, presiding in President in MaryAnn Prue’s absence, opened the meeting at 12:33 pm. Many lovely quilts were shown including the beaded pins made at Silke Cliatt’s February workshop. There were a few donation quilts and one Quilt of Valor. Jane Threlkeld and Hilary Johnson displayed the art quilts Bee Artful had made to raffle off at the Fiber Fest May 4 & 5 at the Sautee Nacoochee Center to benefit art programs there. Minutes and Treasurer’s Reports were approved as printed. Membership: Gini Cawood reported 43 members present and 2 new members, Cathy Bavington and Barbara Westbrook. Gini asked if anyone else needed to renew their membership as today was the last day before the roster is printed. It was so good to see Frances Washburn who is progressing very well. Achievement: Janice Santoro had more quilts than written on her sheet. Please let her know if you forgot to write yours down. Basting: Marge Striggow asked if anyone had a quilt they need basted next month. Please let her know by March 25 if you decide you need one basting. Door Prizes: Jean Gustafson organized the door prizes. These were won by Gini Cawood, Jean Gustafson, Janice Santoro and Barbara Westbrook (2). Opportunity Quilts: Jane Threlkeld thanked everyone who had been an ambassador and/or worked at the booth at Expo. $684.95 was raised. Last year $2557.85 was raised and we are about half way there so far. The Airing of the Quilts in Franklin, NC is May 12. Please let Jane know if you are willing to sell tickets that day along with 2-3 friends and she’ll get us a booth. She will be out of town that weekend. Sharon Ruth will be displaying her quilts at the Helen Library during April. Go see this wonderful collection. Library hours are Monday through Friday, 9-6 only. Reminder that the Fiber Fest at SNCA is May 4 & 5. Our own Bev Mannes, Gini Cawood and Silke Cliatt are teaching classes May 4. Volunteers are needed. Jane passed around a sign-up sheet. Quilts of Valor: Karen Trombley reminded everyone that annual dues are now due. Do make a quilt to the specific guidelines she will give you. Come to the sew-in the 4th Wednesday of each month at Bethel Baptist Church 10-2. Bring your sewing machines. Irons, cutting equipment, etc. will be supplied. Four quilts were given out in February at a very emotional presentation which are so appreciated by the veterans. Programs: Claire Hiscox announced next month’s program will be Connie Cobb from City Square Quilts in Hoschton, GA teaching us about heat set crayons. Workshops: Janice Chiaffredo reminded everyone of the Cyber Sew Day Friday March 23. We will be sewing at home and sending 3 emails or phone calls to Janice with our intended projects, lunch plans and achievements for the day. April 27 Hilary Johnson will be showing us how to make a bow-tie block without Y-seams and the piece-a-que circle block with various small projects you can work on. Lucia Scroggs will be teaching a hexie clock project May 25 with no machines necessary. Bee Business: Bee Artful meets at Clarkesville Methodist, 2nd Tuesday of the month, 9:30 am to about 2pm. April will be a UFO day. Bring articles for Fiber Fest to work on, lots of show and tell including pieces made at last month’s painting on fabric demos. Bring lunch and $3. Bee Creative will meet at Mary Ann Prue’s home, 1st Wednesday of the month, 9:30 am. Bee Sharps meet 1st Thursday of the month, Bethel Baptist Church, 10-2, bring $1 & lunch. The Executive Board, with the invaluable help of Lucia Scroggs, met and made revisions to the By-Laws and the Policies and Procedures. They were printed in last month’s newsletter and with one revision, article 8 should read article 7. Motion made by Jan Pitman to accept; Bev Mannes seconded the motion. The motion passed by the membership present. Today’s Program: Unfortunately, Frances Arnold was unable to present the program today due to issues following knee surgery. Bev Mannes stepped in and did a wonderful presentation of the 105 12” refrigerator quilts she had made every week through 2016 and 2017. Bev started these when her refrigerator was replaced and she wanted to fill a blank space seen from her living room. Her rules were 12” squares, make one a week use what she had on hand including samples she had made of different techniques . She pointed out her favorite blocks and the beautiful blocks were displayed at the Sewing Expo in March. The blocks are now on display at the Sautee Nacoochee Gallery through the Fiber Festival in May. Diane Turner spoke eloquently of Judy Bratt who passed away recently; a lovely, talented lady who will be greatly missed. Meeting adjourned at 2:05 pm. Respectively submitted, Hilary Johnson, Secretary

Friday, May 4 & Saturday, May 5, 2018

All day event with food, music and Llamas. There will be workshops to attend. We also need helpers and Vendors. Applications on website: www.snca.org

My name is Cathy Bavington and I just joined the Mountain Laurel Quilters Guild. I look forward to meeting and getting to know eve-

ryone! I was speaking with Sissy last Tuesday, and she mentioned that I should let you know that I have a long arm quilting business,

The Patchwork Rooster. She thought you might mention it in your newsletter to let guild members know. My website is

ThePatchworkRooster.com, and I work from home in Cleveland. I also quilt charity quilts if anyone in the guild would like me to do so. They just need to supply the top, batting and backing.
