Symposium on electrical, mechatronics and Applied Science 2018 (SEMA’18) is a one-day research event hosted by the Center for Robotics and Industrial Automation (CeRIA) with the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), UTeM. SEMA aims to offer a unique platform for academicians, researchers, technologists, engineers and post-graduate students to present their research findings, establish a mutual knowledge transfer and networking. Through this platform, solutions to the problems and needs of the local industry can be shared, thus bridging the gap between university and industry in Malaysia.

On behalf of the organizing committee, I would like to send my warmest welcome to all participants to the Symposium on electrical, mechatronics and Applied Science 2018 (SEMA’18) held at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) - Melaka, Malaysia. This is the first SEMA which is organized by the Center for Robotics and Industrial Automation (CeRIA) and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE), UTeM.

SEMA’18 offers academicians, post-graduate students, as well as researchers and engineers from industry, especially in the field of engineering and technology, a platform to present their research findings, establish a mutual knowledge transfer and networking and sharing to the community. Through this event, ideas and solutions to the problems and needs of the local industry can be shared and thus, bridging the gap between university and industry in Malaysia. This is in line with the increasing demand for innovative research ideas for solving real engineering problems which advocate the provision of rigorous study among distinct communities.

SEMA’18 brings together researchers from university and industries, thus pave the way for many more productive and interesting events in the future. Last but not least, I wish to formally thanks to the organizing committee for ensuring the success of SEMA’18. BIG SHIFT IN POWER AND ENERGY SYSTEMSby

Prof. Ir. Dr. Mohd Zainal Abidin Ab KadirAs the world needs more power to extend electricity access to over one billion people and to support stable growth and rising living standards for billions more, a new development of energy supplies, while building and upgrading grid infrastructure, is required. On the other hand, an increasing reliance on electricity presents significant challenges for utilities, state-level decision makers and other stakeholders, who must improve reliability and resilience while cost-effectively managing the fundamental changes, in order to meet the convergence of digital and physical innovations, together with advances in energy technologies, which has begun to impact the industry. These trends pose a new set of complex challenges to the industry: balancing the fuel mix, reducing carbon emission levels, ensuring the reliability of power delivery and

quality, improving asset level visibility, identifying new revenue sources, integrating new technologies, neutralizing cyber security threats and coping with an ageing workforce. This presentation will briefly distil the fundamental aspects of power system transformation, taking into account the current challenges and benefits to various parties, global outlook on energy investment and current progress on energy development. Some key changes in the future power grids will also be highlighted, as well as the way forward in moving towards a resilient, flexible, connected and smart future power systems.
