Program 22 May (Wednesday) – Practical Volcanology Short Course 1 9.00 – 11.00 - Basic concepts and terminology of pyroclastic rocks Ion this block we will introduce the basic concepts and terminology of voclanic rocks from chorent magmatic rocks to pyroclastic varieties. The lecture will focus on the magma genesis, transportation, crystalisation, vesiculation, fragmentation, pyroclast transportation, pyroclast deposition and pyroclast remobilisation processes. The section also will outline the basic micro, meso and macro scale features we can look for to trace and identify various processes of the above listed spectrum. The block will show micro and meso scale rock textures to support the ideas and highlight the importance of the scale of observations. The block also will demonstrate basic outcrop scale observation features that are important to be recorded for the purpose of volcanological reconstruction. The block will also contrast various pyroclastic rock terminologies with highlightibng their advantages and pitfalls thorugh real samples and examples from very diverse geological settings. 11.00 – 13.00 - Actual geological view to interpret pyroclastic rocks This block will introduce the concept to link modern volcanic eruptive pőroducts to voclanic rocks. This will be presented through various actual geological aspects of volcanism and their preservation potential in teh geological rock record. The course will overview the main volcanic landforms, the main primary volcanic processes associated with volcanism and intriduce the most common volcanic eruptive products. The volcanic edifice versus ring plain concept in stratovolcanic systems as well as the extra and intraccaldera settings in caldera volcanism will be thoroughly discussed. The block will

Program 22 May (Wednesday) – Practical Volcanology Short Course 1

9.00 – 11.00 - Basic concepts and terminology of pyroclastic rocks

Ion this block we will introduce the basic concepts and terminology of voclanic rocks from chorent magmatic rocks to pyroclastic varieties.

11.00 – 13.00 - Actual geological view to interpret pyroclastic rocks

This block will introduce the concept to link modern volcanic eruptive pőroducts to voclanic rocks. The block will

also provide soem insight of the importance of the scale of observation as well as the scope of research particularly in ancient settings and their volcanological interpretations.

13.00 – 14.00 - Lunch

14.00 – 17.00 - From pyroclastic rocks to volcanic facies analysis

In this section we will offer an overview of volcanic facies analysis. The block will outline the basic concepts of facies analysis in volcanic realms and will link this aspects to other, normal sedimentary facies analysis. The session will build well on the concepts introduced in the previous block and will be a good prelude for the subsequent lectures. The block also will offer several hand on experiences how to record volcanic successions in various scale and what information should be collected as a minimum requirement to be able to constran lateral and verticalé facies relationships of voclajhnic successions.

23 May (Thursday) – Practical Volcanology Short Course 2

9.00 – 11.00 - Mapping volcanic terrains: basic concepts and aspects

This session will provide a modern overview of the main issues of geological mappings of volcanic terrains. The block will intrioduce the basic and minimum requirement needed for geoölogicla mappings of voclanic terrains, and also will provide some overview on the difficulty to apply a uniform method to modern and ancient voclanic successions. The block will show good examples to demonstrate the difficulty and highlight the importance of volcanic geology to generate valid and useful geological maps.

11.00 – 13.00 - Monogenetic volcanism

This block will sum up our current understanding of small volume volcanism in petrographycal (petrological) and volcanic edifice architecture perspective. The session will go throught the main volcanic landforms associated with short lived and small volume volcanism commonly referred as monogenetic volcanism. The session also shows the pitfalls of this definition but also offer a guide how to apply it for various terrains. The block will overview several iconic mopnogenetic voclanic fields globally and putting them in plate tectonic context.

13.00 – 14.00 - Lunch

14.00 – 16.00 - Polygenetic volcanism

This session will introduce the large volcanoes produced by polygenetic voclanism. The block will distinguish between cone versus caldera volcanoes and demonstrate the similarities as well as the distinct differences between them. The block also will concentrate on various processes that are typical for these type of volcanism and will provide practical knowledge how to deal with various volcanic process generated eruptive products from fall out tephras to ignimbrites.

16.00 – 18.00 - Volcanic hazard from geological perspective

This session will provide a brief introduction to the voclanic hazard aspects of various volcanic systems. The deterministic vs probabilistic approaches will be evaluated and a brief guideline will be provided to hioghklight each method’s pros and cons. The session will also approach volcanic hazards from the monogenetic versus polygenetic voclanism perspective.
