Psychodynamic theories. Identify your own personality type. Explain what Type A and Type B personalities
are.
Psychodynamic This theory suggests that your
personality is made up of: Conscious and Unconscious parts.
What do you think mean and how can they affect performance?
Three parts to the theory. id ( instinctive drive) Ego Super ego.
Ego = conscious part. – What we can control.
id – instinctive drive
Makes you do certain things without thinking Sprinter on the
starting line – large levels of anxiety - muscles may freeze - false start
Super ego Areas that we can
control. Affects of this can
be seen when a football play refuses to take a penalty because they feel they may let their team down if they miss.
Interactional view/theory Everyone in this room will know someone
that is friendly and in their social life will not hurt a fly, yet, on the sports field seems almost uncontrollably aggressive.
Theory suggest that when factors are strong they are more likely to predict behaviour.
Quiet athletes – may run to towards ecstatic crowds when they do well.
Task Discuss With a partner any people that
you think are like this.
What do they behave like around other people and how do they react when placed in sporting situations.
Types It is also suggested that personality can be
grouped under two headings: Type A and Type B
The main conclusions of this theory is that Type A individuals tend to be more motivated than type B
Type B tend to participate in sport setting even when they are not motivated to take part.
