Descripción

A través de este curso se presentará una introducción a la epidemiología. Se

cubrirá el estudio sobre la ocurrencia, la distribución y la causa de la

enfermedad de las comunidades, utilizando el método epidemiológico. Se

estudiará la relación que existe entre los factores biológicos-hereditarios, socio-

culturales y ambientales en el mantenimiento de la salud o en el surgimiento de

la enfermedad. Además, se aplicará el método epidemiológico y el método

científico al estudio del proceso salud-enfermedad y sus factores causales,

específicamente en el estudio de enfermedades transmisibles, crónicas,

mentales y en las conductas de riesgo.

Objetivos Generales

Al finalizar el curso el estudiante:

1. Describirá e interpretará las técnicas básicas para la recopilación, manejo y

análisis de datos epidemiológicos.

2. Demostrará entendimiento básico del método epidemiológico y su aplicación

en el campo de la educación en salud.

3. Reconocerá la utilidad del método epidemiológico en el estudio de

enfermedades transmisibles, crónicas y mentales.

4. Reconocerá como las conductas de riesgo pueden ser factores causales en

la formación de la enfermedad.

Mapa Pictórico

El mapa pictórico tiene como propósito el representar visualmente las relaciones

entre la información. Puede además, fortalecer el comparar, contrastar, hacer

secuencias, organizar, clasificar y relacionar entre las partes y el todo.

1. El estudiante realizará lecturas e investigación a través de libros o

el Internet relacionada a los orígenes de la epidemiología y los

propósitos generales de los estudios epidemiológicos.

2. Al finalizar las mismas, identificará los acontecimientos más

importantes en la historia de la epidemiología. También describirá

los propósitos generales de los diferentes estudios

epidemiológicos.

3. Traer la tarea a la clase para ser presentada y discutida. La misma

tendrá un valor de 20% de la nota general del curso.

Informe Grupal I (Oral y Escrito)

El grupo seleccionará una enfermedad en específico y utilizará datos estadísticos

ara determinar factores de riesgo, incidencia y prevalecía de la enfermedad

seleccionada. También incluirá datos de especificidad y sensitividad. Luego de

obtener la información y datos necesarios el grupo creará una presentación oral y

un informe escrito.

1. El trabajo es en equipo (cuatro estudiantes máximos).

2. Es requisito indispensable la utilización de las estrategias sugeridas,

creatividad y medios audiovisuales. Ejemplo: simulaciones, dramas,

debates, competencias académicas, noticieros, grabación de

videos, entrevistas, entre otros.

3. Preparar y entregar un informe escrito (original para el facilitador y

copias para los estudiantes).




4. Tiempo estipulado para la presentación: 20 minutos.

5. Los criterios de la presentación oral serán los siguientes (Anejo B):

a. Dicción

b. Tono de voz

c. Motivación a la audiencia

d. Uso de material audiovisual y equipo tecnológico

e. Dominio del tema (no debe ser leído)

Ensayo Relacionado a los Métodos Utilizados en Estudios Epidemiológicos

Realizar una búsqueda de literatura en el libro de texto, información de referencias,

revista profesional o del Internet que esté relacionado con los métodos utilizados en

estudios epidemiológicos experimentales y de observación.

1. El estudiante escribirá un ensayo de 500 a 700 palabras

analizando los diferentes métodos epidemiológicos. También

aplicará algunos de los métodos a un estudio epidemiológico

existente.

2. El ensayo deberá ser presentado en formato “APA”. Este tendrá un

valor de 20 % de la nota final del curso.

3. El estudiante debe de estar preparado para discutir su ensayo en

clase.




Informe Grupal II (Oral y Escrito)

Por medio de trabajo en equipo, los estudiantes diseñarán un Estudio

Epidemiológico, dirigido a una comunidad utilizando los diferentes tipos de

estudios, criterios, y métodos epidemiológicos discutidos en clase. (Anejo D).

Participación

El estudiante deberá asumir un rol activo en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje,

para: (Anejo E).

1. Contribuir al curso con sus conocimientos y experiencias.

2. Compartir cualquier información, artículo o noticia sobre el área de

epidemiología.

3. Participar en las actividades planificadas en y dentro del salón de clases.

4. Colaborar en cualquier petición requerida por el profesor o por sus

compañeros de estudio en trabajos grupales.

5. Mantener una actitud positiva hacia el curso, profesor y compañeros de

clase.

Reflexiones Diarias

Consisten en una técnica de “Assessment” a través de la cual los estudiantes tienen

la oportunidad de efectuar una reflexión por actividad diaria una vez por semana

sobre su ejecutoria de trabajos, o del facilitador, entre otros. Estas reflexiones lo

llevan a evaluar sus ideas y la de los demás. Ayuda al desarrollo del pensamiento

crítico y la metacognición. Se garantiza al estudiante que solo el facilitador será la

persona que tenga acceso al contenido de las mismas. Es una forma de evaluar si

el estudiante está aprendiendo (Anejo F).




Descripción de las normas del curso

1. La asistencia es obligatoria. El estudiante debe excusarse con el facilitador, si

tiene alguna ausencia y reponer todo trabajo. El facilitador se reserva el derecho

de aceptar la excusa y el trabajo presentado y ajustar la evaluación, según

entienda necesario.

2. Las presentaciones orales y actividades especiales no se pueden reponer, si el

estudiante presenta una excusa válida y constatable (Ej. médica o de un

tribunal), se procederá a citarlo para un examen escrito de la actividad a la cual

no asistió.

3. Este curso es de naturaleza acelerada y requiere que el estudiante se prepare

antes de cada taller, según especifica el módulo. Se requiere un promedio de 10

horas semanales para prepararse para cada taller.

4. El estudiante debe someter trabajos de su autoría, por lo tanto, no deberá

incurrir en plagio. Debe dar crédito a cualquier referencia.

5. Si el facilitador realiza algún cambio, deberá discutir los mismos con el

estudiante en el Taller Uno. Además, entregará los acuerdos por escrito a los

estudiantes y al Programa.

6. El facilitador establecerá el medio y proceso de contacto.

7. El uso de teléfonos celulares está prohibido durante los talleres.

8. No está permitido traer niños o familiares en los salones de clases.

9. El estudiante tendrá la oportunidad de aprender tanto a través del español como

del inglés. Los talleres serán facilitados en ambos idiomas en días alternos.

Esto significa que los talleres serán facilitados en un idioma diferente cada

semana. Un estudiante puede interactuar y hacer preguntas en el idioma de su

preferencia; pero, en general, se le solicitará que utilice un solo idioma en

trabajos específicos. En cada curso se utilizará el español y el inglés de forma

equilibrada.

10. En trabajos grupales, salvo situaciones excepcionales, se considerará que el

mismo se prepara por todos los integrantes del grupo y serán evaluados por

igual.

11. Todo estudiante está sujeto a las normas de comportamiento de la institución y




las que se establezcan en el curso.

12. Los trabajos y asignaciones deberán entregarse en la fecha indicada y en su

totalidad.

Filosofía y Metodología Educativa

Este curso está basado en la teoría educativa del Constructivismo.

Constructivismo es una filosofía de aprendizaje fundamentada en la premisa, de

que, reflexionando a través de nuestras experiencias, podemos construir nuestro

propio conocimiento sobre el mundo en el que vivimos.

Cada uno de nosotros genera nuestras propias “reglas “y “métodos mentales”

que utilizamos para darle sentido a nuestras experiencias. Aprender, por lo tanto,

es simplemente el proceso de ajustar nuestros modelos mentales para poder

acomodar nuevas experiencias. Como facilitadores, nuestro enfoque es el

mantener una conexión entre los hechos y fomentar un nuevo entendimiento en los

estudiantes. También, intentamos adaptar nuestras estrategias de enseñanza a las

respuestas de nuestros estudiantes y motivar a los mismos a analizar, interpretar y

predecir información.

Existen varios principios para el constructivismo, entre los cuales están:

1. El aprendizaje es una búsqueda de significados. Por lo tanto, el

aprendizaje debe comenzar con situaciones en las cuales los estudiantes

estén buscando activamente construir un significado.

2. Significado requiere comprender todas las partes. Y, las partes deben

entenderse en el contexto del todo. Por lo tanto, el proceso de

aprendizaje se enfoca en los conceptos primarios, no en hechos aislados.

3. Para enseñar bien, debemos entender los modelos mentales que los

estudiantes utilizan para percibir el mundo y las presunciones que ellos

hacen para apoyar dichos modelos.

4. El propósito del aprendizaje, es para un individuo, el construir su propio

significado, no sólo memorizar las contestaciones “correctas” y repetir el

significado de otra persona. Como la educación es intrínsicamente

interdisciplinaria, la única forma válida para asegurar el aprendizaje es

hacer del avalúo parte esencial de dicho proceso, asegurando que el

mismo provea a los estudiantes con la información sobre la calidad de su

aprendizaje.

5. La evaluación debe servir como una herramienta de auto-análisis.




6. Proveer herramientas y ambientes que ayuden a los estudiantes a

interpretar las múltiples perspectivas que existen en el mundo.

7. El aprendizaje debe ser controlado internamente y analizado por el

estudiante.

Description

The course will present an introduction to epidemiology. It will analyze the

occurrence, distribution, and the cause of diseases in our communities,

utilizing the epidemiologic method. Emphasis in the relation between the

biological-hereditary, socio-cultural, and environmental factors in the

development of health and diseases are also included. It also includes the

epidemiologic and scientific methods in the study of the health-disease

process. The course will cover the contributing factors in the study of

transmissible, chronic, and mental diseases, as well as the high risk

behaviors.

General Objetives

By the end of the course, the student will:

1. Study the basic techniques to gather, and analyze epidemiologic data.

2. Demonstrate basic understanding of the epidemiologic method and their

application in the health education field.

3. Recognize the importance of the epidemiologic method in the study of

contagious, chronic, and mental diseases.

4. Recognize how the high risk conducts could be important factors in the

development of diseases.

Pictorial Map

The purpose of the pictorial map is to make a visual representation about related

information. In addition, strengthen the compare, contrast, make sequence, organize

and classify skills, and the relation between the parts and the whole.

1. The student should read related literature about the origin of the

epidemiology and the general purpose of the epidemiologic studies.

2. After the reading is finished, the student must identify the most

important events in history of the epidemiology. The student will

describe the general purpose of the different epidemiological

studies.

3. The student should bring this assignment to class, present and

discuss it. This assignment is 20% of the course general grade.

Group Oral and Written Project I

Utilizing the continuum of health-disease, the group will select an specific disease

and will utilize specific data to determine risk factors, incidence and prevalence of

the selected disease. The group will also include specificity and sensibility data.

After obtaining the necessary data, the group will develop an oral presentation and a

written report.

1. Collaborative work in groups of four (four students maximum).

2. It is required to use creativity and audiovisual aids. Example:

simulations, dramatizations, debates, academic competences,

videos recording, interviews, others.

3. Prepare and handle a written report (one original for the facilitator

and a copy for each student).

4. Time for the oral reports: 20 minutes.




5. The evaluation criteria for the oral report will be the following

(Appendix B):

a. Diction

b. Voice tone

c. Audiences Motivation

d. Use of audiovisual materials and technological equipment.

e. Mastery of the topic (no reading).

f. Organization and creativity.

7. This oral and written report is 25% of the final grade of the course.

Essay Related to the Methods Utilized in Epidemiologic Studies

Perform a literature search in the text book, professional journal or the Internet that

will be related to the Methods Utilized in Epidemiologic Studies (experimental and

observational).

1. The student will prepare a 500 to 750-word essay analyzing the

different epidemiologic methods. Also, the student will apply some

of the methods to an existent epidemiologic study.

2. The essay will be submitted in APA format. This essay is 20% of

the final grade of the course.

3. The student should be prepared to discuss his/her essay in class.




Group Project II (Written and Oral)

The group will design an Epidemiologic Study directed to a specific community

utilizing the different types of epidemiologic studies and methods discussed in class.

(Appendix D).

Class Participation

4. Assist in any required petition by the facilitator, students, or team

5. Maintain a positive attitude towards the course, the facilitator, and the

students.

Daily Reflections

The daily reflections consist in an assessment technique where the students have

the opportunity to perform a reflection of the daily activity about their work

performance, the facilitator, and others once a week. These reflections are intended

as a self evaluation of his/her ideas and the ideas of others. These reflections assist

in the development of a critical thinking and metacognition. The reflections are

confidential and the facilitator will be the only person that will have access to the

content. This is a mechanism to evaluate what was learned in class (Appendix F).




Description of course policies

1. Attendance at all class sessions is mandatory. If the Facilitator excuses an

absence, the student must make up for all presentations, papers, or other

assignments due on the date of the absence. The Facilitator will have the final

decision on approval of absences. He/she reserves the right to accept or

reject assignments past due, and to adjust the student’s grade accordingly.

2. Oral presentations and special activities cannot be remade. If the student

provides a valid and verifiable excuse (Ex. medical or from a court), he/she

will be summoned for a written test on the activity in which he/she did not

attend.

3. The course is conducted in an accelerated format and requires that students

prepare in advance for each workshop according to the course module. Each

workshop requires at least ten hours of preparation.

4. It is expected that all written work will be solely that of the student and should

not be plagiarized. That is, the student must be the author of all work

submitted. All quoted or paraphrased material must be properly cited, with

credit given to its author or publisher. It should be noted that plagiarized

writings are easily detectable and students should not risk losing credit for

material that is clearly not their own.

5. If the Facilitator makes changes to the study guide, such changes should be

discussed with the students during the first workshop. Changes agreed upon

should be indicated in writing and given to the students and to the program

administrator.

6. The facilitator will establish the means and way of contact with the students.

7. The use of cellular phones is prohibited during sessions.

8. Children or family members are not allowed to the classrooms.

9. Workshops will be facilitated in English and Spanish in alternate days, in

keeping with the format established in this module. Students may interact

and ask questions in the language of their preference, but generally it is

expected that they use the language of the specific assignment. Each course

will have an equal balance of Spanish and English usage.




10. All students are subject to the policies regarding behavior in the university

community established by the institution and in this course.

11. In group works, except under exceptional circumstances, it will be considered

that all the members of the group perform work and thus they will be

evaluated equally.

12. The written works and assignments will be turned on that assigned date in it’s

totally.

Teaching Philosophy and Methodology

This course is grounded in the learning theory of Constructivism. Constructivism

is a philosophy of learning founded on the premise that, by reflecting on our

experiences, we construct our own understanding of the world in which we live.

Each of us generates our own “rules” and “mental models,” which we use to

make sense of our experiences. Learning, therefore, is simply the process of

adjusting our mental models to accommodate new experiences. As teachers, our

focus is on making connections between facts and fostering new understanding in

students. We will also attempt to tailor our teaching strategies to student responses

and encourage students to analyze, interpret and predict information.

There are several guiding principles of constructivism:

1. Learning is a search for meaning. Therefore, learning must start with the

issues around which students are actively trying to construct meaning.

2. Meaning requires understanding wholes as well as parts. And parts must be

understood in the context of wholes. Therefore, the learning process focuses

on primary concepts, not isolated facts.

3. In order to teach well, we must understand the mental models that students

use to perceive the world and the assumptions they make to support those

models.

4. The purpose of learning is for an individual to construct his or her own

meaning, not just memorize the "right" answers and regurgitate someone

else's meaning. Since education is inherently interdisciplinary, the only

valuable way to measure learning is to make the assessment part of the

learning process, ensuring it provides students with information on the quality

of their learning.

5. Evaluation should serve as a self-analysis tool.

6. Provide tools and environments that help learners interpret the multiple

perspectives of the world.

7. Learning should be internally controlled and mediated by the learner.

Objetivos Específicos

Al finalizar el Taller, el estudiante:

1. Describirá los orígenes de la epidemiología.

2. Describirá loa propósitos generales de los estudios epidemiológicos.

3. Interpretará la distribución de la enfermedad en una población de acuerdo a

tiempo, lugar y persona.

4. Definirá tasa de ataque y su uso para identificar un vehiculo de transmisión

en una epidemia.

5. Definirá incidencia y prevalencia y establecer la relación entre ellas.

6. Discutirá riesgo absoluto, riesgo relativo y atributable e interpretar cuando se

emplean esos términos.

Tareas a realizar antes del Taller Uno

1. Buscar información a través del Internet y/o PROQUEST, la historia de la

epidemiología.

2. Buscar información en el Internet y/o PROQUEST sobre los propósitos

generales de los estudios epidemiológicos.




3. Leer y repasar los capítulos 1 – 2 de el texto “Epidemiology for Public

Health Practice”. Realizar apuntes de conceptos a ser estudiados, para

discutir en clase.

4. Analizar la información adquirida y organizarla de acuerdo al bosquejo

temático, para ser discutida en clase.

5. Preparar la asignación relacionada al mapa pictórico. Este mapa tiene como

propósito el representar visualmente las relaciones entre la información.

Puede además, fortalecer el comparar, contrastar, hacer secuencias,

organizar, clasificar y relacionar entre las partes y el todo (Favor ver

instrucciones específicas para realizar esta asignación en la sección de

evaluación en el prontuario).

Actividades

1. El facilitador se presenta y expone los objetivos, metodología de facilitación,

expectativas y criterios de avalúo del curso PUHE 203. Durante este

proceso, se corroborará que todo estudiante presente, esté debidamente

matriculado en el curso. De igual forma, se verificará que el estudiante tenga

el módulo y libro de texto para que pueda desarrollar los talleres

correspondientes al curso. Se indicarán canales de comunicación alternos

por los cuales se podrá contactar al facilitador durante la semana para apoyo

del estudiante. El facilitador establecerá horarios y días de oficina.

2. Presentación del facilitador y los estudiantes. Se procederá con la selección

del representante estudiantil. Los estudiantes se mantendrán informados

sobre los anuncios vigentes que circulen de las oficinas del Sistema

Universitario Ana G. Méndez, Metro Orlando University Center tales como;

nuevos cursos, fechas de receso académico, fechas de reuniones del

representante estudiantil, entre otros.

3. El facilitador mantendrá informado a los estudiantes sobre su horario de

oficina, para clarificar dudas respecto al material de la clase.

4. Introducción al curso y discusión sobre la historia de la epidemiología a

través de diversas referencias.




7. Discusión de grupo sobre los propósitos generales de los estudios

epidemiológicos. Los estudiantes se dividirán en grupos no mayores de

cuatro personas y cada grupo discutirá la los propósitos generales de los

estudios epidemiológicos. Luego de completada la discusión, un

representante de cada grupo presentará a los demás integrantes de la clase

el análisis de su grupo.

8. Mediante una plática socializada, tipo tertulia, los estudiantes junto al

facilitador conversarán sobre la incidencia y prevalencia y establecer la

relación entre ellas.

9. Se realizará un ejercicio en la clase, donde cada estudiante aportará un

evento significativo en la historia de la epidemiología. El estudiante explicará

el evento y lo colocará en orden cronológico.

10. Se realizará la presentación individual del mapa pictórico.

11. Luego de finalizada la clase, ofrecer una explicación del uso del diario

reflexivo (Anejo F) y tiempo para anotar lo correspondiente al primer taller.

12. Actividad de cierre. El facilitador explicará con detalle, las actividades a

realizar en el segundo Taller, clarificará dudas planteadas y realizará un

ejercicio de relajación con los estudiantes.




Workshop Two

Specific Objectives

At the end of this workshop, the student:

1. Will distinguish the factors related to the disease occurrence.

2. Will define the terms agent, quests, and environment.

3. Will classify the infections according to the mode of transmission.

4. Will define incubation period and the importance of this period in the

transmission of the disease.

5. Will describe the disease spectrum.

Assignments before Workshop II

1. Read Chapters 12 -13 of the book, “Epidemiology for Public Health Practice”.

2. Read Chapters 5 -7 of the book, “Essentials of Epidemiology in Public

Health”.

3. Prepare an outline of the most relevant aspects of the readings to be

discussed in class.

4. Select an article from a professional journal or from the Internet related to the




one or few of the objectives of the Workshop Two. Summarize and analyze

the article. The article will be presented individually in class.

Activities

1. Summary the previous class. It can be done by the facilitator or by a volunteer

student from the class. The work topic should be introduced.

2. Describe the objectives for the workshop and the assignments that will be

completed during the class.

3. Discussion about the factors related to the disease occurrence.

4. The class will be divided in groups of no more that four students. The

epidemiology in public health. The presentation must include examples or

experiences in the community.

5. The students will discuss the incubation period and the importance of this

period in the transmission of the disease.

6. The class will be divided in two groups where one group will classify the

infections according to the mode of transmission and the other group will

discuss the terms agent, quests, and environment. One representative from

each group will present their findings to the entire class.

7. Discussion and analysis of the disease spectrum.

8. Each student will present their article to the entire class.

9. Explanation of the activities to perform in Workshop Three.

1. Additional time will be provided for questions about the topics discussed in

class, and to write the reflexive diary.

2. Leer y repasar los capítulos 1 – 4 de el texto “Essentials of Epidemiology in

Public Health” Realizar apuntes de conceptos a ser estudiados, para discutir

en clase.

3. Preparar la asignación relacionada al Informe Grupal I (Oral y Escrito). El

grupo seleccionará una enfermedad en específico y utilizará datos

estadísticos ara determinar factores de riesgo, incidencia y prevalecía de la

enfermedad seleccionada. También incluirá datos de especificidad y

sensitividad. (Favor ver instrucciones específicas para este informe oral

y escrito en la sección de evaluación del prontuario). Este informe grupal

será entregado y presentado en el Taller Tres.

4. Búsqueda por el Internet y libros /material de referencia información sobre la

asociación estadística entre las características de una población y la

ocurrencia de una enfermedad.

5. Selección de un artículo de revista profesional o del Internet que esté

relacionado con uno o varios de los objetivos del Taller Tres. El artículo será

resumido y presentado individualmente en clase

Actividades

1. Se llevará a cabo un torbellino de ideas con el propósito de repasar los

conceptos desarrollados en el Taller Dos. Se utilizará la técnica de mapa de

conceptos para realizar la actividad.

2. Introducción de las fuentes, medidas, ocurrencia y distribución de morbilidad

y discusión de los objetivos del Taller.

3. Los estudiantes presentarán de forma individualizada el resumen y opinión

personal sobre el artículo seleccionado relacionado a los objetivos del Taller.

4. Los diferentes grupos de estudiantes realizarán las presentaciones de los

datos estadísticos para determinar factores de riesgo, incidencia y

prevalecía de la enfermedad seleccionada.

5. Trabajo en subgrupos: Discutir los distintos estudios epidemiológicos que

pueden realizarse y su utilidad en la investigación de enfermedades. El

análisis servirá de base para identificar las diferentes estrategias de




utilizadas en los diferentes estudios. El grupo seleccionará un líder que

presentará las ideas relevantes discutidas.

6. El facilitador dictará una conferencia sobre la asociación estadística entre

las características de una población y la ocurrencia de una enfermedad.

Avalúo o Assessment

1. Se dará tiempo para escribir el diario reflexivo y explicación o clarificación

de dudas sobre asignaciones futuras.

2. Se realizará una actividad de cierre de motivación, la cual estará a cargo

del facilitador.

Assignments before Workshop Four

1. A brief discussion will take place to review the concepts learned in Workshop

Three.

2. A group of students will make a presentation on the assigned material related

to the most relevant aspects of the readings to be discussed in class. The

presentation should be creative.

3. The class will be divided in subgroups of no more than four students. The

students will share, discuss, and present methods utilized in experimental

and observational epidemiological studies. The groups will present the activity

to the rest of the class.

5. Discussion and analysis of retrospective study (case-control) and prospective

Nota: Este taller será bilingüe. La mitad (50%) de las actividades serán en

ingles y la otra mitad de las actividades (50%) será facilitada en español.
