The President’s Report

David Tait This year has been quite busy for the PWI. Our Technical presentations remain well supported by members and non members, but as a committee we are always looking for presenters from the rail industry. Since our last newsletter we have had presentations from Greg Hallam on ‘QR recovery after a disaster’ and Cyril Chang on ‘Northern Missing Link on Track’. The most recent presentation was on the ‘Kings Bridge Recovery’ and was delivered by Andy Philips. A brief synopsis from some of the above presentations has been included in the newsletter, giving members an idea of what discussed. The Rail Infrastructure Conference was held on the 12 and 13 July in Townsville, where the PWI were involved in this Queensland Rail personnel only event, however 30 No companies participated in this

conference by way of a display at the Conference centre. There is mention that the RIC will be held in SEQ next year, all is still to be confirmed. The Partners Night at the Thai Orchard was held on the evening of the 20 July and the Stanthorpe Rail Study Tour was held on the 20 and 21 August. Yet again, these are great occasions for the PWI members to come together in a non work environment and enjoy each other’s company. The Rockhampton PWI Golf Day was another huge success with large field participation. A big thanks to Troy DeCourcy, Jason Livingston, Michael Dawson and Danny Dawson for organising a great day out. The Brisbane PWI Golf Day was held at Oxley Golf Club on Sunday 23rd October 2011 under blue skies and a dry course. This was the 22nd year for the Golf Day and was another great day. This year the Siemens Team won the Net Score and Gross Score Trophies presented by Mike Garret. Thanks to Robin Stevens for organising a great day out. The committee look forward to meeting with our sponsor representatives at PWI events throughout the year; Gold Membership – AECOM, Austrak, John Holland Group, Laing O’Rourke, Pandrol and Leightons; Corporate Membership – Alcoa Fastening Systems, Delkor, GHD, Thermit, Queensland Rail and Vossloh Cogifer. This sponsorship is to support the PWI for a range of events throughout the year. If any member would like to discuss this matter please seek me out or a committee member at a PWI event with your comments. Finally I would like to thank David Spediacci for producing another informative newsletter. I look forward to seeing you at the next PWI event, bring a friend along. David Tait President PWI (QLD)

Kings Bridge - The Toowoomba Range

Technical Presentation by Andy Phillips (Queensland Rail)

The presentation covered the design and construction of a replacement concrete bridge at Kings Bridge following the washout of the timber bridge at that bottom of the Toowoomba Range during the extreme rainfall event of mid-January 2011. It high-lighted the involvement of QR Civil & Structures through all phases of the work, in replacing the bridge on its original alignment in what was a remarkably short time-frame. The design methodology of using temporary Corrugated Metal Pipes (CMPs) allowed for quick re-instatement of the rail formation for early train operations, with bridge substructure on bored piles constructed in conjunction with the CMPs. Trains were back in operation by end of Feb' 11 - with bridge girders installed some 6wks later during a weekend track closure to finish-off the replacement ballasted deck bridge. Additionally the presentation gave a photographic record of the construction phases of the work, and some of the design decision issues were given context and background. Also there was a video of the Lockyer Ck in full flood at the site of the Lockyer Ck Bridge followed by a brief outline of the repair issues for the bridge, which was damaged in the same flood event.

Editor’s Corner Walking through the shops and seeing all that tinsel you can tell it is that time of year, when school is coming to an end and you start seeing old bearded men in red suits. It’s hard to believe that the year is almost over. With time going by so quickly it will not be long before Ian Marks is planning the 2012 Railway Study Tour. I must thank Ian for organising another enjoyable tour in August. If you want to have a weekend away with like minded railway people, come along next year. The last newsletter’s “Can you name this location” was won by Mike Martin closely followed by Terry Olsson and David Pope. Mike correctly named the picture on the right, as "Border Loop" [that is, the spiral on the Qld/NSW standard gauge line (opened in 1930). This week’s “Can you name this location” photograph is a more recent photo and has been kindly supply by Tina McKewin. If you could help me out by supplying photos of unique railway related locations in Queensland to be part of a “Name that location” quiz that would be great. If you have any photos that you would like to submit, then please email them along with a description to [email protected] Regards…
