PygmalionThe cypriot version of the story
Pygmalion is an ancent and legendary figure of Cyprus and Greece. He is mostly known from Ovid’s poem Metamorphoses, in which Pygmalion was a sculptor who fell in love with a statue he had carved. The name of the statue was Galateia(sleeping beauty). His statue was so fair and realistic that he instantly fell in love with it
Aphrodite's festival day came, and Pygmalion made offerings at the altar of Aphrodite. He wished to find a woman like his statue. When he returned home,he kissed the statue and noticed that her lips were warm and her body was no longer out of stone.Aphrodite had granded his wish.Legend has it that they got married and spent their whole lifes in love with each other. Some say they had a boy named Paphos(now the name of the city in modern day Cyprus) and a girl named Metharme.
