WHAT IS QFD?

A method for developing a design quality,

aimed at satisfying the consumer,

translating the consumer's demand into designtargets

and major quality assurance points to be used

throughout the production phase

OR

translate often subjective quality criteria into objective

ones that can be quantified and measured and which can

then be used to design and manufacture the product2

Goals of QFD

provides the opportunity to make sure you have a

good product before you try to design and

implement it

Prioritize spoken and unspoken customer wants

and needs.

Translate these needs into technical characteristics

and specifications.Build and deliver a quality product or service by

focusing everybody toward customer satisfaction.

History of QFD

Quality Function Deployment was developed by

Yoji Akao in Japan in 1966.

By 1972 the power of the approach had been welldemonstrated at the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries

Kobe Shipyard (Sullivan, 1986)

first book published in 1978 in Japanese

(Mizuno and Akao,).

Translated into English 1994.

Our Topic of Research

Our aim of research is to develop a QFD

and House of Quality Matrix, as a part of QFD, which helps in understanding and

evaluating “The Quality Teaching” at

COMSATS Abbottabad Campus.

Formulating Questionnaires:

developed various variables and dimensions both

from teachers and students’ aspect.

formulated the two questionnaires,

one for the Students (containing 29 questions)

second for teachers (containing 19 questions).

 Sampling Technique and Data Gathering:

Population ......COMSATS Abbottabad,

Convenient Sampling Method,

data obtained via questionnaires

sample of 50 students and 29 Teachers.

All the questionnaires were valid.

a.Customer Requirement

"Voice of Customer” (VOC)

 “whats”

Expressed in customer’s own language,

Gathered through Student’s questionnaires,

REQUIREMETN FROM STUDENTS:

11

•Easy learning process

•Practical skills and knowledge generation

•Well defined goals and objectives of study

•Thought-provoking atmosphere•Key concept clearing

•Well structured course material

•Friendly and open teaching

•Teacher’s responsiveness and helpfulness

•Scheduled course pace

b.Customer Importance Rating:

On a scale from 1 - 10, customers rated the

importance of each requirement.

This number will be used later in therelationship matrix.

e. Relationship matrix:

marking the relationships between variables of both

teachers’ and students’ requirements.

The relations are shown in HoQ by following symbol

stating different type of relations as under:

the importance rating (1-10) by the technical

experts (i.e. Teachers) to the variables or

attributes of product they defined before.

ConclusionQFD is tool which can help organizations like

COMSATS to develop a systematic and effective

approach to “Quality Teaching”.

The process involved in QFD integrates bothcustomers(“STUDENTS”)and Experts

(“Teachers”) that will lead to a better solution and

system of teaching at COMSATS.

If tools QFD are properly used it can help

COMSATS to evaluate their performance against

their competitors betterly and in subjective way.27
