[A]s often as you eat this bread and drink the cup,

you proclaim the death of the Lord until he comes. — 1 Corinthians 11:26

DO THIS IN REMEMBRANCE OF ME We are familiar with the instructions that Jesus gives his disciples at the Last Supper. But what exactly is it that we are to do in remembrance of Jesus? One answer focuses on the “institution narrative” found in the Eucharistic

Prayers: we are to consecrate the bread and wine, changing them, by the power of the Holy Spirit, into the Body and Blood of Christ. This is true; but let’s think about what it takes to actually do this, as the Church has done for almost two thousand years: We are to remember Jesus—to remember

Jesus, the Word of God in human form. To do this, we need that other word of God, given in a different form: the words of the scriptures.

We need to assemble to do this. The Last Supper is a communal meal with Jesus. In his letter to the Corinthians, Paul describes actions done within a group, actions that began with that communal meal with Jesus. We gather as today’s disciples and continue that group activity in our assemblies.

We need to find a way to assemble with some degree of order. We need leaders. We need preachers to preach the Word, we need presiders to repeat the actions of Jesus, persons who are “ordered”—ordained—for preaching and for the consecration of the bread and wine.

9:00 . . - 4:00 . . The day offers some time to look at where we are in our marriages and revisit some of our basic communication skills and memories of our life together as a married couple. It also helps us focus on the importance & dignity of our Sacrament of Marriage in God’s plan for us. The program was developed by a couple in the Archdiocese of NY & touches on some of the concepts covered in greater scope & depth on the Worldwide Marriage Encounter Weekend. The day begins at 9:00am with coffee & bagels, followed by a series of talks and exercises through-out the day, a break for lunch and 5:00pm Mass for those who wish to attend. For more information or to register, please call Chuck & Mary Jane Young at 718-646-4435 or E-mail them at [email protected]. The cost is $25 per couple (includes materials, food & parish offering).
