Our Expertise in CompositesComposites have been around since the 1930s, and were first developed for use within boat hulls, plane fuselages and wings. Today’s composites are used in a wide range of solutions from bridges to oil rigs and water slides to drum sets, and the design possibilities are vast.

using materials such as concrete can require long possessions and Road Rail Vehicles are required for the transportation of associated materials. Even when concrete is used, there is still no easy solution to fixing the problem of stepping distances between the train and the platform when subsidence means they have become out of gauge.

Dura Composites entered the Rail Industry with an award-winning platform solution in 2014 - the patented GRP Dura Platform. Since then the Dura Composites offering has evolved to include a wide range of industry-approved product solutions for the Rail Industry.

Dura are recognised as innovators and in 2017 we were awarded a prestigious Queen’s Award for Enterprise in recognition of our success in growing, innovating and championing the use of composite materials across the globe.

One of the most popular emerging composites of the past 40 years has been Glass Reinforced Plastic (or GRP), which is a resin-based composite that’s reinforced with a glass fibre. By contrast, fibre-reinforced plastic (FRP) is a plastic-based composite that is reinforced with any type of fibre, not necessarily glass, so the difference between FRP and GRP is essentially the type of fibre used. Dura Composites has a proven track record in supplying innovative GRP solutions for key rail infrastructure projects across the globe and has a range of value added services that help our clients unlock the power of composites for their projects.

It’s been almost 30 years since the first GRP composites were installed as part of Britain’s transport network within bridge structures, but the composite material innovation that the industry has seen since then has been staggering. The market for composites is growing rapidly as Rail asset owners reap the benefits that a low-maintenance, lightweight, non-conductive and robust alternative to traditional materials can have on the modernisation of ageing infrastructures.

With over 4.7 million rail journeys made in the UK every day, the stations where people start and end their journeys are a key focus for improvements to the passenger experience. Changes to rolling stock require longer platforms, and Victorian platform installations require replacement or refurbishment as they reach the end of their service life after more than a century of heavy use. Traditionally, remedial works

From the overall appearance of the entryway to the anti-slip nature of the platform edge, the materials used in and around a station have a direct impact on helping to guide passengers through the station safely and effectively.

There are many risk factors associated with the PTI, including:

PTI Compliance

The passenger-train interface (PTI) has been an area of increasing focus for those operating in the rail sector in the past few years. Over the last five years, PTI accidents on the mainline network have resulted in, on average, 1,354 minor injuries, 51.6 major injuries and 3 fatalities per year and have led to the railway developing a PTI strategy for improving safety risk, operational performance and accessibility.

Dura Composites’ strategy for improving the passenger train interface has been to create market-leading composite solutions for the rail industry which are designed to reduce incidents and accidents through clever features such as anti-slip surfaces and height adjustable capabilities, and which can be installed efficiently and cost effectively across the network.

One such example has been the introduction of Dura Platform to help solve the problem of stepping distance issues between the train and the platform, commonly identified by ‘Mind the Gap’ notices and announcements commonly

heard at rail stations. The UK mainline network has just over 2,500 stations with 6,000 platforms, many of which are Victorian and reaching the end of their lifecycle, but rebuilding thousands of legacy platforms to comply with the standards required new stations is simply not realistic.

Dura Platform allows contractors to replace or overlay onto damaged or subsided platforms a low maintenance, modular, lightweight, height adjustable structure that enhances safety with anti-slip surface options, in-built water management, integral lines, integral lighting, snow melting capability and that has similar or lower overall project costs than concrete. Utilising Dura Platform to reduce the gap to comply with current standards improves the passenger experience both through reducing injuries and reducing the length of time needed to board and alight trains.

Station Platforms

After over a century of heavy use, many of the UK’s concrete train station platforms now require replacement as they reach the end of their service life. Traditionally concrete has been used, but works can require long possessions and are costly.

Dura Platform 40 &100

Dura Platform is a breakthrough composite product which solves all of these challenges and more in record time! Made from Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) which complies with Network Rail specifications, our composite station platform offer significant improvements over traditional alternatives such as concrete. It has been described as “game changing” by industry insiders and has won multiple awards.

Dura Platform is an excellent choice for both new build and refurbishment projects and is fast becoming a viable rival for traditional materials such as concrete, steel and tarmac.

Dura Platform can span up to an industry-leading 3.2m clear span and is capable of being man-handled, eliminating the need for costly RRVs or heavy lifting equipment. Its hidden fixing system minimises trip hazards, and the platform is also crankable to create an instant 1:40 fall to manage drainage.

Our latest innovation for Dura Platform includes the option of a solid surface on the 600mm plank which removes the need for longitudinal cover plates to cover the fixings and provides a uniform, aesthetically pleasing finish.

Snow and ice can cause serious problems for the railways. Drifting snow from platforms and embankments can coat the electrified rail, preventing trains from drawing power and blocking lines and snow and ice on platforms can delay passengers and cause painful trips and falls.

Traditional methods of snow and ice removal by station operators such as manual sweeping and salting or chemical de-icing are labour-intensive,

have limited effectiveness and cause accelerated corrosion and deterioration of the platform and support structures.

Dura Platform can be specified with an integral heating system to keep platforms free of snow and ice in extreme weather conditions.

Dura Composites’ innovative Platform Heating System removes the need for cost-intensive snow and ice clearing, whilst at the same time increasing platform safety for station users.

Dura Platform has been developed with an extremely hard wearing anti-slip finish as standard, in an attractive dark grey colour which suits all station environments. The surface is easy to maintain and over-achieves on Network Rails anti-slip specification in both wet and dry conditions. To discuss alternative surface options please contact your Dura representative.

Dura Composites trash and debris screens can be easily added to help reduce debris build up under the platform structure which could become a fire hazard.

Made from our high strength, but low weight Dura Grating and Dura Profile, they are suitable for both new build and platform refurbishments, and also help assist with rodent control.

Dura Composites’ composite dagger boards are the ideal replacement material for timber in railway station canopy fascias.

Made from durable composite material with a Class B fire rating in accordance with BS EN 13501, Dura Composites Dagger Boards mimic the appearance of traditional wooden valance boards but are simple to install and require virtually no maintenance over their 50 year design life.

Dagger boards have been common at UK stations since the late 1850s, and primarily served the practical function of removing water from the canopy and reducing weather-inflicted damage such as rot, thereby preventing deterioration of the canopy itself. In addition to their practical functions, daggerboards were recognised as having positive decorative and aesthetic qualities and were produced in a range of intricate designs.

However they are traditionally made from timber which requires extensive maintenance due to weathering, which can cause considerable disruption to passengers

and station operators as rotten or warped boards normally need replacing in situ – leading to station platform closures.

Dura Composites can help you Unlock the Power of Composites for your station canopy or fascia project. Dura Dagger Boards come in a range of attractive profiles, all of which are non-conductive and require minimal maintenance over their long lifecycle – eliminating the need for repainting or replacing damaged or rotted sections at height and saving time and money on site.

Dura Composites’ 19mm composite dagger boards mimic the appearance of traditional timber valance boards, but are lighter, simpler to install and require virtually no maintenance over their long design life.

Utilising the same composite material design as our market-leading station platform Dura Dagger Boards, the panels have an attractive woodgrain effect finish which mimics traditional timber detailing but is more robust and requires significantly less maintenance over time.

Our patent pending design achieves a market-leading fire rating of B-s1,d0 in accordance with European Standards EN-13501-1 and provides both decorative and functional benefits. The

shaping of the boards helps to keep passengers dry whilst

maintaining natural light and ventilation within the canopy.

Our footbridge cladding and canopy soffit panels combine strength, durability and minimal maintenance allowing them to be used in a variety of station footbridge or platform applications either externally or internally as attractive panelling, soffits and fascias.

The composite panels are incredibly lightweight and meet the requirements of BS EN 13501, allowing for footbridge parapets to be enclosed with less risk to passengers thanks to the Class B fire rating.

Dura Wall Lining & Soffit Panels are ideally suited to modular footbridge designs with differing span arrangements that can be modified for each unique location.

The material can also be used to replace worn timber soffit details under station canopies to give a modern clean look to the canopy whilst concealing the unsightly structure underneath. The lower weight nature of the composite means that panels can be quickly and easily removed if the substructure requires inspection or remedial works.

The Dura systems made from GRP are lightweight, high strength, anti-slip, non-corrosive and non-conductive and overcome all of the problems normally associated with the use of traditional materials such as wood, steel and concrete.

Where previous composite treads on the market have been limited in span capabilities, Dura Composites has the ability to span up to 2.1m clear open span, achieving the required 5kN/m2 at L/300 deflection and meaning that additional supports can be avoided in most scenarios.

The NEW Dura Slab Structural Stair Tread design can be specified with built-in risers, speeding up the install process whilst increasing safety, particularly in scenarios where bridge treads are located near overhead lines or are replacing open risers.

Also included is a very slight fall to assist in the prevention of water pooling which can lead to problems with ice in the winter months. No heavy lifting equipment is needed as all panels can be easily manhandled even in full stock lengths. *For cut orders, please contact our sales team.

Dura Slab Structural Landings Working in conjunction with the NEW Dura Slab Structural Treads, Dura Composites offer landing panels which can span up to 2m clear span (50mm thick option), achieving 5kN/m2 at L/300 deflection or up to 3.2m (using the 100mm option). Both reduce or eliminate the need for additional supports to break spans down, providing huge advantages over other composite solutions on the market.

Dura Slab Structural Landings are designed as a modular system, allowing the contractor huge flexibility both at the design stage and on site.

The anti-slip surface caters for all types of footwear and so is ideal for passenger environments.

The need for less or no alterations to the sub structure also dramatically reduces the install time, number of possessions and overall disruption to the end user.

Again, no heavy lifting equipment is needed as all panels can be easily manhandled even in full stock lengths.

AFTER

Great Bentley Station

IN BRIEFThe footbridge at the station was badly in need of refurbishment due to dangerous rotting wooden stair treads. Working in partnership with Greater Anglia, the team at Dura Composites developed the award-winning Dura Slab Structural Stair Tread and Landings which are made from high-strength Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP) and incorporate a number of ground-breaking features designed to reduce project costs and installation times.

The refurbishment work at Great Bentley comprised bridge deck and tread replacements over the full span of the bridge, and the treads and landings were easily fixed into position thanks to their single unit construction.

Notable details include a built-in riser for rapid installation and an in-built fall to assist with drainage and reduce pooling on stair surfaces.

Commenting on the installation at Great Bentley, Simone Bailey Asset Management Director at Abellio Greater Anglia said;

“We are delighted with the results at Great Bentley which demonstrates our continued commitment to improving stations. The original footbridge featured 12- inch by 4-inch hardwood timber which was badly degraded.

Anti-slip covers had been applied as a temporary solution to prolong the life of the bridge, but this temporary fix simply accelerated the degradation of the timber beneath.

In working with Dura Composites to develop the 65mm Dura Slab Structural Stair Tread, we were able to employ a lightweight, durable, robust and easy to install anti-slip GRP composite solution which incorporated a built in fall to push water away from the steel structure underneath prolonging the life of the footbridge for passengers for many years to come.”

First opened in 1866, Great Bentley train station is on the Great Eastern Main Line in the East of England. The station has two platforms and is managed by Greater Anglia.

We can supply self-closing gates to complement our handrail systems. Gates are provided with spring assembly and can be hinged to an adjoining handrail stanchion or bolted to a suitable fixing plate.

Weighing up to 80% less than steel and 30% less than aluminium, they offer equivalent performance for considerably less weight.

This results in major savings including lower installation costs due to more economical transportation, handling and on-site positioning.

As well as fully fabricated non-corrosive and non-conductive single unit GRP end of platform steps we can also supply in component or flat pack kit form ready for quick assembly on-site.

Balfour Beatty Rail

One area in which Dura Composites has been instrumental in helping deliver safety improvements is in the design and supply of GRP fencing, end of platform gates and anti-trespass guards to stop members of the public accessing the operational train line from the station.

In 2018, Dura Composites was approached by Balfour Beatty Rail who had been contracted by Network Rail to design and build the end of platform gates at 41 stations across Surrey and the south of England.

Although a basic design had been conceived, no detailed site surveys had been conducted. On viewing the proposed design, the Dura Composites Rail Team saw some major opportunities for design and material improvements that would help drive efficiencies and improve safety for those working on the railway and ultimately the travelling public.

Working with Alexandre Polícia, Senior Engineer at Balfour Beatty, the Dura Composites Structural Engineering and CAD team devised a new modular design utilising our market-leading GRP Dura

Profile and Dura Grating components that not only exceeded the required specified crowd loading requirements, but that also was not dependent on individual site survey reports from each station location which would have slowed down deployment and installation.

All Dura Composites Rail product designs take into account the entire asset lifecycle, from design, construction and installation through to renewal and disposal, thanks to the level of detailed information that Dura Composites is able to provide about its GRP product range.

A new station or a major refurbishment provides an opportunity to incorporate best practice into the station design – and Dura Composites is proud to have played a key role in improving safety measures over the past five years since establishing itself as a key part of the rail supply chain by working directly with clients right across the supply chain.

Commenting on their experience, Alexandre Polícia, Senior Engineer at Balfour Beatty

“Dura Composites’ robust End of Platform Gate and Fencing was devised with speed of production and installation in mind and far exceeded our expectations. Dura Composites were helpful and professional, delivering an enhanced designed that was far more appropriate for the project than the initial design and that was fabricated and delivered on time and to the agreed budget. We won’t hesitate in coming to Dura Composites to deploy this new design for future station projects”.

Notes (applies to both tables)

Notes 1 - RIS 7700 INS requires that material should be non-combustible where practicable and perform no worse than existing material. Building regulation requirement defines combustible and non-combustible material. For platforms it is agreed that Steel,Tarmac and Concrete is non-combustible. It does not add to the fire load.

Notes 2 - The acceptance criteria shall be minimum 20 minutes with BS476 20/21 test conditions (i.e. Test loading, Temperature and Deflections etc).

Notes 3 - Indicative test with actual test loading and deflection criteria as per BS476-20/21 may be acceptable with Network Rail Fire

Engineer’s written approval. This situation might arise when the test takes place in a smaller furnace (& not 4m x 3m as required by BS476 20/21). For example for platform overlays maximum span might be limited to 1500mm.

Notes 4 - T est loading shall be defined by the designer in accordance with respective Network Rail standards. Refer Appendix B of Form A :- Modular Platform System - GRP

Notes 5 - For roof application other than walkway access the Fire Engineer must be consulted for further instructions.

The 4s rubber slider test imitates the heel of a shoe or foot to determine the level of slip resistance. The 4s slider test method is specially designed to replicate everyday

footwear across a surface. The four S’s stands for:

The 4s slider test should not be confused with the pendulum 5s slider or TRL (Transport Road Laboratory) test, which is designed for testing slip resistance on a roading surface.

The results gained from a 5s slider/TRL test are significantly higher than the 4s slider test. The 4s slider test can be relied upon in a court of law where a personal injury claim may have been made. This test measures the floors slip resistance values against the recommended health and safety minimum value of ‘36’ and proves to insurance companies, slip accident claimants (genuine or fraudulent), and personal injury lawyers, that a safe floor environment has been provided.
