Advanced meter technology will help co-op increase efficiency, productivity

Perspective

O n any given day, more than 500 men and women are powering the co-op.

One of their core missions is to provide reliable electric service. We understand this is of utmost importance to you, our members; therefore, it is most important to us.

In pursuit of this reliability mission, Clay Electric began implementing a system-wide Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) project in 2016. Much of the work to date has been behind the scenes or up high on our poles, but contractors will soon be visible in your neighborhood or close by. That’s because over the next 18 months, existing meters will be replaced with a state-of-the-art, advanced meter that measures the amount of electricity used and at what time of day. AMI meters will send this information to Clay Electric by way of radio frequency waves and enable two-way communications between the cooperative and the member.

It’s important to understand that while this technology is advanced, it is certainly not new. In fact, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, advanced metering across the nation has reached market penetration levels of more than 75 percent. In Florida, half of all meters are AMI meters, and among electric cooperatives, more than 70 percent of all co-ops have deployed some type of AMI system. Advanced meters are quickly becoming the industry standard.

This modernized grid will help us serve you better in several ways.

First, our front-line operations will be more efficient as the reading of meters, residential and commercial alike, will be done remotely. This is more cost-effective

than having personnel drive to all locations monthly. Lowering operational costs keeps our rates as low as possible over the long haul.

Secondly, reliability, or “keeping the lights on,” will be improved. Having a two-way communication with the AMI meters will enhance Clay Electric’s outage management system by helping us be proactive in finding outage locations. In fact, an outage alert will be sent to us anytime your power goes out.

Thirdly, we realize it is not the member’s job to worry about “power quality;” that’s our job. For example, without high-quality power, our members would see problems in operating equipment and appliances. The AMI system will report variances in voltage and other line conditions that will help us maintain a more reliable power distribution system.

Finally, we understand that we all want electric bills that are as low as possible. Who doesn’t want the best value for his or her dollar? This new AMI system will allow us to offer you more timely information about your energy consumption. Since usage data will be recorded every hour versus once a month, members will be better able to make wise decisions about how they use energy in their homes and businesses.

As we continue to install new meters and implement the system, we will share updates with you. If you would like to know more about the technology, please take a look at our website, ClayElectric.com, which has pages dedicated to the AMI project. You will find a Frequently Asked Questions page, a timeline of when and where the meters will be installed, and other helpful information.

Mail slow?If you are tired of waiting for your electric bill to arrive in your mailbox, sign up to receive your statement by email and get it up to three days sooner than by regular mail. Visit ClayElectric.com, log into your account, click on “Billing Email Preferences”

and check the box for “yes.”

New meter installations begin in Orange Park; project expected to finish in 2020 in Lake City

The roll out of Clay Electric’s new advanced meters began earlier this month in the Orange Park District.

The cooperative has employed a licensed contractor, Allegiant Utility Services, to change out existing meters across our service area with advanced meters to improve reliability and to give detailed data about energy use. Installations will continue in the Orange Park District until early September, when meters will begin to be set in the Palatka District. The remaining sequence of districts will be Salt Springs, Keystone Heights, Gainesville and Lake City.

The Allegiant Utility Services contractors will be in uniform and will have photo identification cards. Their ID cards and company vehicles display both the Allegiant and Clay Electric logos and are labeled as Clay Electric contractors.

You will receive prior notification by mail of when to expect the meter replacement. When Allegiant arrives at your home, an installer will knock at the door to let you know they are there to replace your meter. The installers will not need, nor will they request, to enter your home. They will also not request any personal information or payment from you for the meter replacement service, which is free. If you are not home, Allegiant will proceed with placing the new meter.

Installers will approach the existing meter, take pictures

for documentation and change the meter. During this process, your power will be out for just a few minutes. When the installation is complete, the contractor will leave a door hanger at your

location to let you know your meter has been replaced. If the meter could not be replaced, the door hanger will specify why and explain what needs to happen next.

“Utility scams occasionally

circulate in our service area and companies claim to be affiliated with Clay Electric when they are not,” said Chief Public Relations Officer Derick Thomas. “We have made sure that the Allegiant contractors can be easily identified as professionals who represent Clay Electric.”

Commercial and remote meter read meters will not be installed by Allegiant, but by Clay Electric employees. The co-op will notify members of when to expect the meter replacement.

For more information on the advanced meter project, visit www.clayelectric.com/meter_installation. If you have concerns about anyone claiming to represent Clay Electric, please call your district office.

The Allegiant Utility Services contractors will be in uniform and will have photo identification cards.

Contractors will drive white Toyota trucks with an Allegiant logo.
